Learning in Reception Our topic in Reception this term is ‘growing’ and therefore we have been looking at the process of a plant’s growth from seedling to flower. Reception have been able to display their knowledge on this topic by naming the different parts of a plant, and also talking about what a plant needs in order to grow. Our main book for this term is Jack and the Beanstalk, which the year group have enjoyed reading, as they have been able to re-tell the story to their peers and also take part in role play, becoming the characters themselves. Reception took the opportunity to bring in their favourite books and to talk about them to the rest of the class, showing they truly embraced the ethos of the day.

Learning in Year 2 Year 2 have become reporters this week and have been learning the features of newspaper articles. They started off the week by discussing the events leading up to the crime in the story and worked out questions they wanted to ask Comp, the naughty dinosaur who stole an egg. other to find out more information. The children learnt how to use speech marks when they recorded the quotes ready to use in their newspaper reports. At the end of the week, Year 2 wrote some excellent newspaper articles. It is clear Year 2 have lots of budding journalists!

On Thursday 3rd March, Nelson celebrated World Book Day. The children dressed up as different book characters and were very excited to discuss their favourite books! Year 2 learnt how to summarise the book and wrote some interesting book reviews, sharing their opinions and explaining why they would recommend the book to others.

Learning in Year 4 Last week, Year 4 had a wonderful time at the Rose

Theatre watching Hetty Feather! The play tied in

perfectly with our current Power of Reading text

‘Leon and place between’, where Leon enters a

magical world of magicians, jugglers and trapeze

artists. This week, children have been creating a

new character for Leon to meet in the place

between. As well as thinking about the structure of

narrative, children have been focusing on the

differences between implicit and explicit writing to

encourage the reader to think in more depth about

how a character is feeling. Here are some fantastic

examples of this week’s writing:

‘Leon fell down, down, down, until he felt ice

Attendance & Success High attendance: more successful children. We set high standards for attendance and punctuali-

ty. Our target for attendance is 97%+. Good attendance is strongly linked to pupil achievement.

What time should my child be in class by each day? The bell is rung at 8.45 in the morning to allow children to start coming in to school as part of our ‘soft start’ in to school in the morning. Children in Year 3, 4 5 and 6 need to be in class for registration by 8.55am. Arriving after 8.55am means a child is late. For children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 registra-tion closes at 9.00am. Arriving after 9.00am means a child is late.

* This is defined as the total number of minutes lateness of children within the class Whole School Attendance for this week is 93.8% Whole School Attendance to date is 95.8%

pricking his cheeks. His eyes began to close. Every noise had disappeared except the thumping of his heart. When Leon awoke, his teeth chattered and he still felt half asleep. The one thing Leon was afraid of was the lion cub that was looming over him then scrambled away into a pitch black corner of what seemed to be a cave. The only warmth and light in the cave was a small fire. Then, the lion cub lay down next to the fire. His sapphire eyes twinkled in the light. Suddenly, a blinding yellow light appeared, and within the blink of an eye, it was gone. In its place, stood a boy about Leon’s age, with very light brown hair and blue eyes- just like the lion’s. Instantly, Leon recognised the pair. “Luke” whispered Leon, as he turned a little. “Leon! Where are we?” Leon felt a lot better now. “We are in the place between…” – Evie 4F

‘Leon fell down, down, down until he heard a snap!

His face went all red, and he had goose bumps all

over his arms and a shiver down his spine for a

finishing touch. He landed in a ring, with a man with

a face like a bull and a crocodile. The man asked

Leon for help. Leon shuddered, flinched, then tried

to climb out, but felt the crocodile bite him.

“Owww” He screamed. – Louis 4F

Learning in Year 6 In Year 6, we have now come to the end of our Power of Reading text “Skellig” by David Almond and have thoroughly enjoyed it. We have explored the themes in the book through our guided reading sessions. Birds and flight, and particularly owls, are one of the many themes we identified, and to acknowledge this, we have mixed art and literature to create our own owls in clay. The have yet to be varnished, but we would like to share with you the work we have done on them so far.

Our Values Respect In March we are focusing on understanding the importance of Respect.

Respect is knowing I am unique and valuable.

Respect is liking who I am. Respect is listening to others. Read more about values-based education,

Winning Ship Reward Children in HMS Victory had their crew ship reward this week. The children chose a film and popcorn. A well earned reward for consistently showing our Nelson Values.

World Book Day What a wonderful day we had on Thursday when children dressed up as different book characters. Thank you to all the children and families who helped with making and organising costumes to mark World Book Day. Visit our gallery on the website where shortly our collection of photographs of the event will be showcased.

Annual Parent Survey Each year we conduct an annual survey to find out parents’ and carers’ views. Views of parents combined with our own evaluation enables school leaders and the Governing Body to identify strengths and areas for improvement. Gathering views at this time of year supports our budget planning and shapes school improvement priorities for the next financial and school year. This year we are trialling a new electronic survey to obtain views. Today you will receive a separate email with a link to this year’s survey. All parents are encouraged to talk to their children and share their views through the on-line survey. We are still happy to receive completed paper survey, so should you wish to give your views in this way please pick up a paper survey from the main office. The survey will close on Thursday 24th March.

Sports Relief 2016 This year we are really excited to be raising money for Sport Relief 2016! As one of the UK’s biggest fundraising events, Sport Relief brings the entire nation together to get active, raise cash and change lives.

Children at Nelson will get involved and help raise money by taking part in a ‘moveathalon’, an event which will take place across the week for different year groups during the week Monday 14th March-

18th March.

Children are encouraged to bring in a donation for participating in the different activities to get them moving for a great cause. Activities will include speed skipping, catching and throwing and hula hooping to get all children involved!

We really appreciate your support and hope that the children will have fun helping our school raise lots of money for Sport Relief! More details to follow nest week.
