  • 2 2003 ELECTRICAL STANDARDS & PRODUCT GUIDE NEMA

    S E C T I O N H E A D

This year's issue of NEMA's Electrical Standards &Product Guide is being sent to 50,000 engineers, archi-tects, specifiers, and buyers of electrical products.

The standards in this edition represent countless hoursof work by engineers from NEMA member companies, who collaborate to provide the industry with guidelinesfor building safe, compatible, and efficient electricalequipment. The approximately 350 standards NEMApublishes cover a broad range of products, from staplesof the industry like enclosures and fittings to highlyadvanced technology such as industrial controls and diagnostic imaging equip-ment.

This year's guide includes a revision of the ANSI Z535 standards, a series ofsafety standards setting forth requirements for safety colors, safety signs andsymbols, and safety tags and barricade tapes for temporary hazards. This set isused the world over for providing safety messages and warnings to the public.

We are also offering a revised DICOM standard this year. The Digital Imagingand Communications in Medicine set is a 14-part series that establishes communi-cations standards for digital medical information. DICOM is used, or will soonbe, by virtually all medical professionals within the healthcare industry who useimages to diagnose medical conditions. They include specialists in cardiology, dentistry, endoscopy, mammography, opthamology, orthopedics, pathology, pedi-atrics, radiation therapy, radiology, surgery, and even veterinary medicine.

Another standard that enjoys widespread use and has just been re-published isMW 1000 for magnet wire. It provides the definitions, type designations, dimen-sions, and other assorted attributes of wires used in the winding of coils for elec-trical equipment.

As this edition went to press, the 2003 revision of the NEMA Fire AlarmTraining Manual was nearly published and so we chose to include it. The manualis used to train electrician apprentices across the nation and ultimately helps bol-ster electrical safety in the U.S.

The products listed in this edition of the Electrical Standards & ProductGuide are the result of state of the art design, engineering, and productionprocesses of electroindustry manufacturers whose reach stretches across theglobe. NEMA member companies make the finest electrical products on theplanet. They quite literally make the world go round and we are proud to carrythem in our guide.

Both the products and standards listed here can also be found on our website,www.nema.org. We encourage you to visit the site and link to our member com-panies to find out how to purchase their products, or to visit InformationalHandling Services (IHS) at www.global.ihs.com to purchase NEMA standards.(See IHS advertisement on page 25).

We believe the Electrical Standards & Product Guide represents the best ourindustry has to offer. We hope you find it a useful reference tool throughout theyear.

This index is a quick reference guide to all of the standards available from NEMA, both NEMA and ANSI standards. Itnotes the latest version available, the price, and the page number on which you will find the title and a short description ofthe document, as well as companion standards and notices of approval or adoption by other organizations.

At least every five years, each NEMA standard is reviewed for timeliness, technical accuracy, and relevance. The datesof the reviews are published as part of the alpha-numeric standard identifier. Revisions published for NEMA standards aremade available for holders of the base standard at a nominal price. The revision is automatically included in the base stan-dard for future users and the price of the standard (base and revisions) is adjusted. When a NEMA standard is purchasedthrough IHS/Global Engineering Documents, the customer will be sent notification of the standards revision.

ANSI C18 SeriesRepresents the most up-to-daterequirements for battery performanceand dimensions. Each standard hasbeen divided into two parts. The firstpart covers general items and batteryspecifications. All matters related tosafety are now consolidated in Part2. This complete set of ANSI C18standards now stands as the unri-valed model for the global batterystandards community.

ANSI C18.1M, Part 1-2001For Portable Primary Cells and Batteries with AqueousElectrolyteGeneral andSpecificationsApplies to portable primary cells andbatteries with aqueous electrolyte anda zinc anode (non-lithium). This edi-tion includes four electrochemical sys-tems: carbon zinc (LeClanche and zincchloride types), alkaline manganesedioxide; silver oxide; and zinc air.Approved as an American NationalStandard.Price: $73.00

ANSI C18.1M, Part 2-1999For Portable Primary Cells andBatteries with AqueousElectrolyteSafety StandardDefines performance requirements forprimary batteries with aqueous elec-trolyte to ensure their safe operationunder normal use and reasonablyforeseeable misuse.

The following pages contain the titles and ordering information for standards and other publications developed by NEMAand ANSI (the American National Standards Institute) for electrical products and components. Publications are organizedby product categories and are available for purchase through Global Engineering Documents at (800) 854-7179; outside theU.S. at (303) 397-7956; or via fax at (303) 397-2740. The information is also available on their website,www.global.ihs.com. Be sure to note that, in some cases, a publication must be obtained directly from NEMA.

Companion Standards are other NEMA, ANSI, or IEC standards that might be of interest to the user. Standardsapproved by ANSI or adopted by the U.S. Department of Defense are so indicated. Contact information for sources for pub-lications from other organizations are provided on page 134. Manufacturers of products related to the standard are listedunder the same product category in the product and manufacturer listing, beginning on page 81.

In addition to the associations industry standards, users may also be interested in NEMA's other publications (guides, handbooks, reports, newsletters, and brochures) covering items of interest to electrical manufacturers, which can be foundwithin their subject categories. Member and quantity discounts do not apply for these publications except as noted.

Expansion Joints for PVC RigidNonmetallic ConduitPolymer Raceway Products (PVC)Technical Committee publicationnotes that fluctuations in temperaturehave a greater effect upon polyvinylchloride (PVC) than more traditionalmaterials such as aluminum andsteel. Thermal expansion and contrac-tion have significant effects on longstraight runs of conduit; therefore, expansion joints are used to accom-modate changes in length. This pre-vents potentially harmful thermalstresses in the conduit itself or in anysupporting structures.Downloadable from www.nema.org.

Solvent-Cementing Joints for PVC Rigid NonmetallicConduit, Duct, and FittingsFour-page application guide preparedby the Polymer Raceway Productstechnical committee discusses aspectsof solvent-cementing of joints for PVCrigid nonmetallic conduit, duct, and fit-tings.
