NEMBC NATIONAL YOUTH MEDIA CONFERENCE 2019The NEMBC Annual Conference is a unique conference representing thousands of ethnic community broadcasters. The event brings together government representatives, community leaders, academics, multicultural organisations, radio station managers and broadcasters from across Australia. This is an opportunity for ethnic community broadcasters to network, discuss and debate key issues that relate to community broadcasting, the media and multicultural policies.The Youth Media Conference, held as part of this conference, is the only event of its kind in Australia bringing together young community radio broadcasters, media producers, community leaders and organisations from a diverse range of multicultural backgrounds. These young people are Australia’s leading network of up and coming media makers and are the faces that can, with much inspiration, shape Australia’s media landscape over the next twenty years.

We acknowledge the Jagera and Turrbal peoples of Meeanjin (Brisbane) as the traditional owners of the land on which this conference is held, and pay our respects to their Elders both past and present.

KEYNOTE PRESENTION

Steve Ahern OAMAustralian media executive, strategist, trainer and international consultant in modern broadcast media.

He has become known for his understanding of new trends and technologies in online and broadcast media, for his work restructuring media companies for the challenges of the modern media environment, and for his advocacy of media freedom.In 2009 he was awarded an Order of Australia medal for his contributions to the radio industry and education in Australia.Ahern has been active in training radio and television industry organisations for the transition to digital radio, digital television, and new OTT services. He lectures about the future of media in Australia and internationally.As the CEO of AMT Pty Ltd and IMBA, he is sought after as a media futurist, advising broadcasters how to adapt to the new smartphone, smart speaker and social media environment. He also advises on how to restructure media companies in the new media era. Recent speeches and presentations include how media can be useful in fighting fake news, radio in media-dark countries journalism in dangerous environments and Media Reform in Australia.

Lizzie Orley Communications Officer – Brisbane Indigenous Media Association

Lizzie Orley is a Kamilaroi woman with ties to Kefalonia, Greece and is currently a radio announcer based in Brisbane, QLD.Her love for yarning started quite early. As a young child she’d often wander off in restaurants to strike up a conversation and give away her phone number and address to anyone she could. During her primary school years you’d find her tape recording pretend radio shows with friends, impersonating celebrities and recording the “greatest hits” from their “So Fresh” CD’s. Now at 28 years, Lizzie has worked within the radio broadcasting industry and Indigenous media for over a decade, allowing her to pursue her passions for storytelling, yarning, learning from people and the world, raising awareness on First Nations issues and supporting community. Lizzie currently hosts the Murri Hour and Deadly Choices Radio on 98.9FM (Indigenous community radio)and hopes to continue supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and informing the wider community on First Nations issues through the power of story telling.

Emily Wurramara A huge supporter of community radio, Emily Wurramara is an ARIA nominated, multi-award winning artist and Wannandilyakwa woman from Groote Eylandt in the Northern Territory. With national airplay and tons of international and national touring and Festivals under her belt, Emily happily credits community radio for the part it has played in helping her share her culture and music across the country.

Khwezi Nkwanyana Radio 4EB Youth Board Representative

Khwezi is a news, policy and multicultural enthusiast who loves to share the stories of Australians who are typically underrepresented in mainstream media. As a South African raised in both the UK and Australia, Khwezi has always been proud to showcase her Zulu heritage with others and she is always eager to learn more about the diverse cultural landscape here in Australia.

Khwezi joined Radio 4EB in 2018 and ever since she has found a place to call her home. Currently, she is the Youth Board Representative at Radio 4EB and hopes to better engage current youth broadcaster with ethnic youths across South-East Queensland.

Molly GeorgeYouth Representative CBAA

Molly George is the Media Learning Manager at SYN Media in Melbourne. Molly became involved in community radio producing content for All The Best and volunteering at SYN. While volunteering at SYN, Molly produced the program ‘Babetown’ and trained school students and community groups as a Workshop Facilitator.

She has experienced the impact that broadcasting platforms and leadership can have for young people in community broadcasting, and is passionate about amplifying the voices of all young people in the sector.

Molly strives to provide young people opportunities to advocate for themselves, and believes that community radio is a crucial tool to changing attitudes between generations.

Waqas DurraniFECCA Treasurer Chair, Masters of Professional Accounting Specialisation student University of Tasmania

FECCA’s previous Youth Representative, Masters of Professional Accounting Specialisation student University of Tasmania

Waqas Durrani is a dedicated and committed volunteer who has spent countless hours since his arrival in Australia to organize various events promoting human rights and multicultural events. His passion is youth education, employment and empowerment. He has contributed to an astonishing array of activities not only in his academic life and career, but also in the wider community of Australia by his advocacy for human rights and people coming from CALD and NESB background.

David Wang David is an accounting graduate with a passion for community radio. David became involved with 1 CMS as a panel operator and volunteer broadcaster for both the Mandarin and Multicultural youth programs. He uses radio as a platform to support other young people in the community and his groups programs actively organises events to increase community engagement. They have held events such as concerts showcasing cultural performances and talent, information seminars as well as sports days and cooking competitions. He currently works with his station to provide training to other volunteer broadcasters through workshops.

Bunfu Yu Hobart 7THE Broadcaster

Bunfu Yu has been a community radio broadcaster for almost a decade, co-presenting a Chinese program on Hobart FM. Aside from radio, she is also a lion dance performer as part of the Buddhist organisation that she was raised in, and has performed across the country and internationally. Although born overseas, Bunfu was raised in Tasmania from a young age, and through her involvement in radio as well as cultural performances, has helped to ensure that she keeps her heritage close to her heart. Outside of her community roles, she is a land use planner working on renewable energy projects across the country.

Heli Newton Pathways Manager at the Community Media Training Organisation.

For over 5 years, Heli has volunteered at FBi Radio in broadcasting music specialist programs and was involved in their audio production team. Aside from his contributions to community radio, Heli performs and writes music.

Evrim Sen SYN Training and Development Manager

Started working in community media in 2016 as part of a culturally and linguistically diverse program on SYN. Since that time, Evrim has worked as SYN’s Training and Development Manager, running their social enterprise SYN Media Learning (providing training and broadcasting opportunities to 3,500 school aged students every year), as well as numerous creative, technical and training projects including writing radio dramas, working on SYN’s infrastructure upgrades and delivering training during the Artlands Festival in partnership with Regional Arts Victoria in Bendigo. She recently joined the CBF Development & Operations Grants Advisory Committee and hopes to continue the growth and innovation of community broadcasting, supporting new ideas and thoughtful strategy.

The 2019 Gala Dinner and Awards will be an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of Radio 4EB – Brisbane’s largest ethnic radio station. Radio 4EB started broadcasting on 1st December 1979 and on November 30, 2019, Radio 4EB will celebrate its 40th year of being on-air at one of Queensland’s most iconic venues, the Brisbane City Hall on Saturday 30 November from 6:30pm. This will include a 3-course dinner, and various performances at Brisbane City Hall, 64 Adelaide Street, Brisbane City.

eChamps is a project aimed at fostering the skills of ethnic community broadcasters and building on their capacity to inform their stations of the opportunities provided through digital engagement.

As part of the project multicultural community broadcasters from around Australia receive free training to develop their online media skills and extend their broadcasting capacity at this year’s NEMBC youth and main Conference.

Training involves how to use social media and other online media tools to communicate to audiences, as well as audio and video recording skills.

eChamps learn the ins and outs of social media, how to set up and use blogs to share information, as well as using audio and visual material effectively. They will blog, document and record everything that happens over the day.

The eChamps team have been at the NEMBC conference for the last five years, and even in that time technology and the way we use it has changed at a fast pace.

Keep an eye out for them documenting the conference, they may even ask you some questions or your photo!
