Welcome

Dear participants,

It is a sweet pleasure to welcome you in Bled, Slovenia, at the 22nd International Conference Nuclear Energy for New Europe. The NENE 2013 conference is organised by the Nuclear Society of Slovenia in association with the Jožef Stefan Institute, Reactor Engineering Division.

It is also our pleasure to announce that His Excellency Borut Pahor, the President of the Republic of Slovenia, is the honourable sponsor of the NENE 2013 conference.

The conference is an annual gathering of professionals from nuclear research and educational institutions, nuclear vendors, utilities and regulatory bodies, with tradition of more than two decades. It attracts participants from all around Europe and worldwide. The topics discussed are general and include reactor physics, thermal hydraulics, probabilistic safety assessment, severe accidents, nuclear fusion, nuclear power plant operation, nuclear materials, waste management and new reactor designs.

This year, the leading theme of the conference is New Generation(s) for Better Future. The resources needed for a sustainable and safe utilization of nuclear energy will be highlighted at the round table discussion. Eight invited lecturers covering prominent and timely topics on safety research, safety assessment capabilities, support to plant operation and human and scientific resources, will also discuss the challenges and opportunities of nuclear energy today and in the future. In addition, 35 oral presentations in eleven plenary sessions, covering variety of topics, will be complemented by 136 posters presented during the coffee breaks. The traditional contest of young authors will be a great opportunity for the new generation of experts to promote their ideas and work. We are very pleased that 17 young authors are participating in the contest. Also the best posters will be awarded.

Finally, we hope that you will find the meeting successful and the discussions fruitful.

Round table discussion: New generation(s) for better future?

The round table discussion will be held in the Hotel Golf, Jupiter Hall. It is scheduled for Monday, September 9, from 16:00 to 17:30. The discussion will be open for the public.

Topic

Nuclear energy is expected to remain an essential source of competitive and environmentally friendly primary energy for the decades or even centuries to come.

Sustainable and safe utilization of nuclear energy will require new generations of experts and new generations of reactors. Together, the new generations of experts and new generations of reactors are seen as essential prerequisites for the expansion of nuclear generation capacities worldwide.

The main question tackled at the round table will be how to secure the new generations of experts, reactors and power.
