Quality Products from BASF—The Benchmark in Polystyrene For Over 50 years

4 Neopor > Quality Products rom BASF

Styropor®—Behind this name lies a success storythat is everyone’s goal. BASF discovered a clas-sic over 50 years ago in expandable polystyrene(EPS). Under the tradename Styropor, EPS isnow the solution or eicient insulation and saepackaging worldwide.

With Neopor®, BASF has taken the classicStyropor a step urther. This new materialor modern insulating materials is oamed just

like Styropor and processed to boards andmolded parts.

The vital dierence can be seen with the nakedeye in the silver-gray color. In Neopor, graphiteis added to the material, absorbing and relectingheat radiation and improving the insulating per-ormance o EPS by up to 20 percent.

Products made rom BASF’s Neopor are an eco-nomic investment in the uture and add to thevalue o a property.

Many old buildings have a heating energyrequirement o over 200 kWh/(m2 ∙ a). A single-amily house with a heated living area o 150 m2 would use approximately 3,000 liters o heatingoil or 3,000 m3 o gas per heating period. Theseconsumption igures are considerably reducedwhen using Neopor insulating materials.

Studies show an energy savings potential o over

50% when using thermal insulation. Full amor-tization o the insulating material costs otenoccurs in one heating period. Energy is savedand the environment protected.

Thermal insulation in comparisonGreater advantage to lower costs

The eco-eiciency analysis looks at productsand processes rom both an economic and anecological point o view. The result o an evalu-ation o this nature, in the example o the ther-mal insulation composite system (TICS) with a

U-value o 0.29 W/(m

· K), is shown in the dia-gram. The major advantage o Neopor® insulatingboards lies in the reduced use o raw materialso up to 50%, generating savings in terms ocosts and resources, which in turn relieves pres-sure on the environment. Compared to alterna-tive products, Neopor insulating materials oereconomic advantages with lower environmentalimpact, and thereore oer eco-eicient insulat-ing solutions or up-to-date thermal insulation.

Interior insulation You get the best results with Neopor®

Ceiling insulation (basement)Eiciently insulating with Neopor

In unheated basement areas, the insulation is ittedunder the ceiling o the basement. This step shouldnot be omitted because o the comparatively lowcosts, even i the potential savings are less than withcomparable measures in the acade and roo areas. The result:Cool basements, warm living areas: Basement ceil-ings can be optimally insulated with Neopor insulat-ing boards; the height o the room is only minimallyreduced, and as a result, the heating energy con-

sumption can be reduced —thanks to the improvedinsulating eect compared with conventional EPS.

Internal insulation is particularly suitable or improv-ing the thermal insulation o external walls o existing

residential buildings, i insulation rom outside is notpossible or is not desirable. Internal insulation involveslow manuacturing costs and can be carried out insections. Where heating times are short or heating israpid, internal insulation with Neopor® is, in act, pre-erable to external insulation. Because o the outstand-ing thermal insulation properties o Neopor insulatingboards, better insulation perormance is achieved withsmaller thicknesses than with conventional EPS. As aresult, less valuable internal space is lost.

Composite boards with the insulating material

Neopor® as a substrate or painting and wall-papering work Composite boards with insulating material madeo Neopor and gypsum plasterboard, which can beinstalled to room height, are ideal or this purpose. They are suitable as a substrate or painting and wall-papering work and or wall tiles once the gaps havebeen proessionally illed.

Neopor—Use in apartment buildingsIn apartment buildings where noise levels need to bereduced, Neopor insulating boards that have addition-

ally been elasticized also provide a perceptible contri-bution to sound insulation.

Please note:Some external wall constructions require anadditional vapor barrier or vapor brake. A struc-tural examination is always advisable. Floorstructures or internal wall ixings should be insu-lated to reduce the ormation o thermal bridges.

Slit thermal insulation boards made o Neopor areideal or inter-rater insulation. A special longitudinalslit makes the insulation board lexible and elastic,

enabling it to be itted snugly between the raters. Thecombination o inter- and over-rater insulation withNeopor insulating boards provides a high level o ther-mal insulation with a low construction height.

Inter-rater insulationPrecision-itting

Over-rater insulationNo gaps in the insulating layer

Rater insulation is a structurally optimum constructionbecause the insulating layer is laid over the roo con-struction with virtually no breaks. Visible raters canbe integrated into the internal architecture o areas asa creative eature. To best meet the thermal insula-tion requirements, the Neopor® insulating material isused eiciently or over-rater insulation in the orm oboards or roo elements and as thermorooing.

Proessionally converted areas under pitchedroos oer valuable living space. However, spe-cial construction solutions are needed to guar-antee healthy, comortable living under the roo

which makes the appropriate level o insulationlayer particularly crucial. In summer, living areasunder the roo should not become unbearablyhot due to solar radiation, and in winter, thethermal insulation must restrict the loss o costlyheating energy.

Flat roos are subject to high thermal loads and result-ing stresses, aecting the roo sealing and buildingconstruction. Neopor® insulating materials protect the

construction rom the eects o variations in tempera-ture and guarantee sae thermal insulation. Economic constructionsNeopor insulating materials are used in warm rooconstructions. They are suitable or virtually all poten-tial sealing materials and or protective and use sur-aces. Flat roos with sealed, environmentally riendlyand economic constructions can be built usingNeopor insulating materials.

Neopor® in renovating lat roos

An additional thermal insulation layer with Neoporinsulating boards is laid i the lat roo is to be mod-ernized and brought up to the current thermal insula-tion standards. As is the case in new buildings, anequalizing protective layer against water vapor, a rooseal, and a surace protective layer should be added.Furthermore, the roo has to be secured to prevent itrom being lited o by the wind. For old roo areaswith a slope o less than two percent, constructing thethermal insulation with Neopor insulating boards assloping elements isrecommended.

Irrespective o the statutory regulations, it is advisableor all owners o old buildings to check the thermalinsulation o the roo void, as this can save consider-able cost. In many buildings, the ceiling o the toploor is poorly insulated or may not even have anyinsulation at all. The roo void can be optimally insu-lated by using Neopor insulating boards.

Lot insulationRoo voids with no energy loss

Neopor insulating boards, like EPS, are only suit-able or bonding with hot bitumen or a nakedlame i a separating layer is in place. I Neoporinsulating boards are combined with plastic ilmssuch as PVC and EVA, the manuacturer’s guide-lines must be ollowed.

Please note:Should the roo void be able to withstand oot

traic, the insulating boards must be coveredon top. In some wooden beam ceilings, a vaporbarrier or vapor brake may need to be installedunder the insulation. Each construction shouldbe assessed individually.

Zero -heating cost house inLudwigshaen, GermanyEnergy consumption reduced to technical-economicoptimum

In view o rising energy prices, a zero -heating cost house can rep-

resent the optimum investment. LUWOGE, BASF’s housing com-pany, has developed a concept that reduces energy consumption toan economic optimum by energy modernization measures. A ther-mal insulation composite system with Neopor® insulating boardsis used so that the building incurs the minimum heating costs. Theenergy or power, hot water, and heating the house is produced byusing regenerative energy sources. The cost savings are used orreinancing. Thereore, the costs or heating and producing hot waterare quite separate rom the operating costs.

BASF’s know-how o building energy-eiciently with innovativematerials is proving its worth in France. Ater a complete renova-tion, the “Bâtiment Génération E ”, a villa in Fontenay-sous-Bois,uses less than 50 kW/h instead o 400 kW/h per square meter. This

reduction in energy consumption was mainly due to Neopor insu-lating materials, which were used to insulate walls, roo, loors, andceilings. Styrodur® C was utilized or the perimeter insulation.
