OnApril25,2015,Nepalsufferedadevastating7.8magnitudeearthquake.Over8,000peoplelosttheirlives;thousandsmorewereinjured,andhundredsofthousandsweredisplacedaftertheir homes were destroyed. Nepal’s already fragile infrastructure, including its tinyinternational airport, was damaged by the earthquake, making it harder for groups likeMedSharetodeliveraid.MedShare had partnered with organizations based there in the past, but each containershippedwasahugeendeavor.Inthebestoftimes,Nepalisachallengingcountrytonavigate.Asalandlocked,mountainouscountry,Nepalmanageseverythingfromsummermonsoonstoseverepoverty.Adisasterofthismagnitudeonlyservedtoexacerbateallofthesechallenges.

After the initial earthquake,MedShareactivated its emergency responseprotocol todeliveraid to the people of Nepal. MedShare reached out to its donors, medical manufacturingpartnersforessentialmedicalsuppliesandissuedanurgentappealto its19,000volunteersforassistance.Wequicklyorganizedtwoairshipmentstogetmedicalsuppliesonthegroundandputtouse.Thesetwoshipmentscontained1,200boxesofsupplies,includingbandages,gloves,masks,orthopedicproductsandanautoclaveforsterilization.

ThemajorityofhumanitarianorganizationsparticipatingintheNepalresponsefacedsevereissues in bringing relief items into the country. Even organizations with longstandinggovernmentrelationshipsandlettersofauthorizationfromtherelevantministriessawtheircargo blocked at the border or stuck in customs. For goods that were not pre-approved,duties,VAT,andotherfeeswerequotedasbeingfrom20%to30%oftheshipment’svalue.The cost to humanitarian organizations regarding canceled charter flights, demurrage anddetentionratesattheborder,andotherexpenseswassubstantial.MedShare collaboratedwithmanypartners in the region toovercome these challengesandsuccessfullydeliveredeightshipmentsofcriticalmedicalsuppliesoverthepastyear. Theseshipments included six airlifts and two forty-foot ocean containers to targeted healthcarefacilities and NGOs. They have collectively contained over 56,000 pounds of vital medicalsupplies and equipment conservatively valued at $612,850. In addition to the invaluable supportfromHCA,MedShare receivedproductdonations fromcompanies likeTronexInternational.Intotal,Tronexdonated60palletsofassortedmedicalsupplies,which equaled 27,186 pounds ofproduct. This donation comprisednearly 77% of all product donationsMedShare received specifically forNepal disaster relief. Tronex glovesand masks have been protectinghealthcare workers, serving patients,and improving the delivery ofhealthcare in Nepal since the onset of this crisis. These products continue to make adifferenceinlivesofNepalesepeopleastheyrebuildtheirhealthcareinfrastructure.

MedSharerecentlyreceivedaletterfromtheExecutiveDirectorofTheOdaFoundation.TheOda Foundation works with underserved communities to provide high-quality, low-costhealthcareandeducationinruralNepal.Thestoryofhowoursuppliesgottothemisonethattouches us all and is a constant reminder of the power of the human spirit to overcomeobstacles.

Although MedShare had been havingmore success with air shipments, theOda Foundation believed an oceancontainer of supplies and equipmentwouldmostbenefittheirmedicalclinic,and provide support to the broaderregion. For that to happen, a 40-footoceancontainertraveledfromthePortof Savannah, Georgia to the Port ofKolkata,India.Onceitclearedcustomsin India (no small feat in itself), thecontainerbegana20-hourjourneybyatractor-trailer along almost the entiresouthern border of Nepal to reach abordercrossingcalledNepalgunj.

civilunrestalongthemainbordercrossingfromIndiatoNepal.OnceattheNepalgunjbordercrossing, thecontainerwasmovedacross theborder toacitycalledSurkhet, the lastmajorcity before the roads become extremely challenging. From there, the container had to beunloaded and reloaded onto smaller trucks to traverse the mountainous roadways. ThesmallertrucksthendroveonanarrowroadtothetownofKalikot,whereteamsofvolunteershiked the rest of the way, carrying 1,000 boxes of supplies andmedical equipment to theprojectsite.

WehaveenclosedthethankyouletterwereceivedfromJohnChristopher,ExecutiveDirectorof the Oda Foundation. The supplies and equipment they received helped nearly 17,000patientsandwillcontinuetohelpmoreinneed.

Notlongaftertheearthquakestruck,andMedSharesentitsfirstairshipment,wereceivedanemail from Dr. Saju Pradhan, Medical Director at Nepal Orthopedic Hospital. Dr. Pradhanremindedusthatquickactionisnotaluxurywhenitcomestosavinglives.Dr.Pradhanwrote“The supplies from MedShare are a Godsend. We were so low on our reserves, andMedShare’ssuppliesarethelargestdonationwe’vereceivedthusfar.Wehavestartedtousethemimmediately!”MedShare extends its deepest gratitude to all who supported this work.
