The Last Invasion of Ireland
August 1798
Commemorated in Lahardane, Sunday 18th August 2013
Pikes were made locally in Murphy’s Forge, Derryhillagh for the 1798
Campaign. They were the major weapon used by local people who joined
General Humbert and his men in Killala in August 1798 .
We know that some of these brave people in that campaign were the Barretts
of Lahardane; Jordans of Derryhillagh; from Glenavenue John & Pat
Joyce; Gaughan & James McNamara Caffoley; Páidin a Choga from
Rathkell; Larry Gillespie from Addergoole.
