summer sunshineNew research* has revealed that this year’s summer heatwave caused almost three quarters of Britons’ productivity levels to decrease. Furthermore, as many as one in seven employees admitted to faking illnesses or lying about personal circumstances in order to spend more time out of work and in the sunshine, costing UK companies as much as £272,466,600.

That said, we do spend a large part of each year hoping for good weather, so now that has been fulfilled and summer holidays taken, let’s hope we are rejuvenated ready to make the most of all business opportunities before the Christmas break.

tJ sets sites on commercial recycling expansion

TJ’s newly-leased site at Blashford Quarry near Ringwood

A waste management specialist in the south has rolled out a new commercial recycling facility near Ringwood.

The first site for the TJ Group, which runs a branded fleet of nearly 100 vehicles, is at the Blashford sand and gravel quarry. With a new staff of three, the facility focuses on the recycling of soils and hardcore, such as concrete, bricks and asphalt, with new plant machinery for separation processing.

John Gosling is the Managing Director of TJ, which has 3,000 clients across from Bournemouth in the west to Brighton in the east and up to near Rugby in the East Midlands.

He said, ‘Our newly-leased recycling facility at Blashford Quarry means we can spread our geographical wings further into Dorset in the west and Wiltshire in the north, opening up new commercial opportunities as we continue to expand.’

John added, ‘There is increasing demand for recycled aggregate from companies looking to reduce their carbon footprints, and that of their own clients, with Blashford Quarry ideally placed to service local demand.’

over the top for charityOn the 9th September nine local businessmen will go ‘Over the Top’ and embark on the journey of a lifetime, starting in Bordeaux and cycling deep into the south of France to Perpignan, all to raise money for the Boo Charity.

The group will be travelling 425 miles over four days, covering up to 137 miles a day. As part of their journey they will be tackling the dreaded Col du Tourmalet, the highest road in the central Pyrenees at almost 7,000 feet. They will also be going through Pau and Carcassonne, locations which, along with the Col du Tourmalet, you may recognise from this year’s Tour De France.

The Boo Charity is a charity established in the memory of founder Russell Hicks’ wife, Sarah, affectionately nicknamed ‘Boo’. Sarah sadly lost her battle to cancer at the age of 36. During her last years she sought alternative treatment in Kenya where she was touched by the compassion and love shown to her. Boo’s lasting wish was to help African Children who are disadvantaged through economic poverty.

Business volunteers sought to inspire next generationHelp inspire the next generation of enterprising young people. That’s the message from Young Enterprise (YE) which is looking for 150 business volunteers to take part in its new programme of activities, starting this autumn in Dorset.

Anyone - from Managing Director/Chief Executive to apprentice - is invited to volunteer. They’ll have the opportunity to pass on their business skills and experience to school pupils taking part in YE’s employability and company programmes.

Hannah Cook, Area Manager, said, ‘Our volunteers get huge satisfaction from helping young people improve their employability skills, from brushing up their CV skills to handling a job interview.

‘All we ask is volunteers bring enthusiasm and a little time. It’s unpaid but very worthwhile and rewarding.’

Chartered accountants and business advisers Princecroft Willis (PcW) have been involved with Young Enterprise for more than five years.

Neptune provides safe port in storm Poole-based Neptune Maritime Security has successfully delivered comprehensive crisis management training to bolster defences at major ports in Asia, the Middle East and Africa (AMEA) amid increasing instability in the region.

An expert team from the company’s Dubai head office and operational support centre recently performed exacting risk assessments before carrying out specialist

training for security officers and senior personnel. The comprehensive risk management solutions featured such

scenarios as terror attacks and suicide bombers, kidnap, threats to cruise ship passengers, civil unrest and uprisings as well routine health and safety checks. They were the latest in a series of emergency response services delivered by Neptune in the AMEA region as the expanding company continues to drive up standards in the maritime security sector and diversify its operational range.

Business Development Manager Jeremy Johnson said, ‘Major port operators are becoming increasingly aware of potential risks at their facilities worldwide.

‘Companies must not only meet International Ship and Port Security (ISPS) Code standards and meet routine health and safety requirements but also ensure their emergency response plans are updated.

‘We have a successful track record of providing specialist security and risk management solutions in ports and shore-side industrial and petro-chemical facilities around the globe, as well as our background as a trusted and professional PMSC in vessel protection.

‘Using our experience in creating emergency response plans, a thorough understanding of the ISPS Code and health and safety planning, we have been able to provide clients with the necessary skills to enhance their businesses in hazardous countries while ensuring the safety of staff and operations and reducing potential liabilities.’

He added, ‘Our latest specialist solution was for a port operating in a potentially hazardous area against a background of increasing regional instability.

‘We delivered a bespoke risk assessment and training programme to give the client greater capabilities and the confidence to focus on operations rather than worry about potential dangers.

‘Mitigation is always the safest plan of action whether it is for shipping, ports, shoreside and offshore facilities, or cruise terminals.’

Neptune, with offices in the UK, Dubai, Tokyo and Singapore, initially carried out a bespoke risk assessment at the port, which has not been named for security reasons. It covered such factors as staff, office facilities within the port and terminal and the company’s vessels.

The recent crisis management training by Neptune comes hot on the heels of the company becoming one of a small number of accredited PMSCs to achieve associate membership of BIMCO, one of the world’s largest shipping associations, after achieving the ISO (PAS) 28007 accreditation.

Neptune also provides specialist services for the cruise industry, superyachts, ports and the offshore energy sector.

poole tax adviser urges local landlords to put their house in orderLandlords who rent out residential property in Bournemouth and Poole are being warned to put their house in order as they are targeted by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) in a bid to recover the £500m it believes is being underpaid each year in the sector.

Liz Tapley who runs TaxAssist Accountants in Poole said, ‘HMRC has begun writing to letting agents, demanding details of rents collected on behalf of landlords for the tax year ended 5th April 2013.

‘Some Bournemouth and Poole landlords may not even realise that they are landlords, or that tax may be due, but that won’t stop them facing hefty fines or even criminal prosecution. If they come forward now under the Let Property Campaign, they will get the best possible terms to settle any tax and interest owed. If they don’t, HMRC will come down hard. It is vital local landlords grasp this lifeline to get their own house in order.’

The campaign applies to all residential property landlords, including those with just a single rental, student or holiday letting.

According to the Council of Mortgage Lenders there are now 1.57 million buy-to-let mortgages in the UK, an increase of 120,000 in the past year. HMRC estimates that landlords in residential property could be underpaying up to £500m in UK tax every year.

One fifth of UK hospitality employees admit to regularly stealing money from workplaceNew research has revealed that almost one fifth of UK workers who are employed in the hospitality industry confessed to researchers that they steal money they have received as tips from customers in the work place at least once a month, rather than share the profits equally with co-workers. Furthermore, one in twelve respondents confessed that they had been guilty of taking money from the till in the past, or short changing customers in order to keep the difference.

Whilst tipping may not be so central to our leisure culture in the UK as it is North America and Europe, it has become an increasingly more common practice throughout the hospitality industry over the past decade or so. Taking this into consideration, the leading provider of tamper evident solutions decided to conduct a study with a view to discovering the attitude of hospitality workers when it comes to tipping, as well as the amount of money stolen from the average hospitality business in the UK by staff each year.

The research, conducted by www.versapak.co.uk polled a total of 2,107 hospitality industry workers in the UK. Each respondent currently a held job position whereby they are regularly tipped in cash by customers.

Prudent cupid: being sensible with money the way to a woman’s heartForget a six pack, a bulging pay packet or an Oxbridge degree – British women believe being responsible with money makes a partner more attractive.

According to research from Experian, the global information services company, three quarters of British women (75%) say financial responsibility is an attractive quality in a partner – on a par with their intelligence (74%) and more important than appearance (65%), education (47%) and background (26%). Only a good sense of humour (87%) is rated as more attractive.

But the research should not be interpreted as suggesting women are only interested in the size of a partner’s pay packet. On the contrary, women ranked wealth (21%), salary (34%) and occupation (32%) far lower in importance than sharing the same life goals (59%) or family plans (64%) when choosing a partner.

Childcare Vouchers are a long-established employee benefit available to help make childcare more affordable for working parents. Used by more than 500,000 parents in the UK, Childcare Vouchers are a key tool to help parents back into work after having children as they provide savings of up to £933 per parent, each year.

Next autumn, the government is launching a new Tax-free Childcare scheme which will see them subsidising 20% of a child’s childcare fees on costs of up to £10,000, providing savings of up to £2,000 per child, each year. Unlike Childcare Vouchers, Tax-free Childcare will only be available to households where both parents work or for single working parents, which means, there will be many families who either won’t be eligible to use the scheme or those who would be financially better off using Childcare Vouchers.

Childcare Vouchers will remain in existence for as long as they are required, although only for those already using them. There is urgency for employers to set up a Childcare Vouchers scheme now to enable their employees to have the choice to use whichever scheme provides them with maximum savings when the new scheme is implemented next year. Setting up a scheme now will give your employees the opportunity to save over £933 between now and next autumn.

Why set up a Childcare Voucher scheme?Setting up and administering a Childcare Voucher scheme is quick and easy. Not only will your employees save money on their childcare costs, their motivation, production and retention will increase. Offering a Childcare Voucher scheme can save your organisation up to £402 per employee on the scheme each year as you are not required to pay Employers National Insurance contributions.

Childcare vouchers: the clock is tickingproperty buyers play it safe with no-nups Savvy property owners who club together to buy a home are turning to no-nups to safeguard their investment. Sarah Brooks, Residential Conveyancing Partner at Hampshire-based law firm Warner Goodman LLP, explains how cohabitation agreements, or no-nups as they are becoming increasingly known, can help fix the outcome if things go wrong between a cohabiting couple or two or more friends clubbing together.

This is particularly important when contributions to buying a property are unequal. Nowadays, many young people are buying with the help of parents, and there is often a difference in the amount invested by each person, so it’s important to agree what share each owner has, at the outset.

But many joint buyers who are not married or in a civil partnership still don’t realise that they have little or no protection if things go wrong, believing that they will have similar rights to divorcing couples when it comes to sharing assets or maintenance.

Although property can be held in specified shares, so each gets back their relative contribution if there’s a sale, it doesn’t protect against the other financial contributions that may have been made, and that’s where the no-nup comes in.

This sort of agreement can set out the way property is owned and the contributions being made, including how finances will be managed in the relationship, down to who pays what and on what date. It can also cover responsibilities for day to day running and managing of the property, right through to what will happen in the event of a split. As well being a legally binding official agreement that takes away uncertainty, it can help relieve tension about financial matters from the outset, as drawing up the agreement means everything has to be agreed from the start.

Sarah explains, ‘Anyone buying property together should be protecting themselves by getting under the surface to agree the basis on which it is being undertaken. Division of assets and property on splitting can still be affected by other circumstances, for example if children have been born between a couple, but it’s a good strong basis to work from.

‘Obviously it’s best to do it before you commit big sums of money to a purchase, but it can be drawn up at any time to record what was intended – although it’s too late when you’re at the point of splitting and the relationship has broken down.

‘The agreement can drill down to the detail of who takes out the bins, or simply be a declaration of trust, which would set out who owns what share and the agreement on responsibilities towards the mortgage and other property outgoings – and any parent giving or lending money to help their children onto the property ladder should insist on this as a bare minimum.’

Why business owners should consider moving to VoIP technologyOne of the fundamental truths about technology is it is constantly evolving. Some of the biggest changes can be seen in the shift from traditional analogue telephony to VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol).

Poole-based telecommunications firm VoIP Unlimited advises that any business currently looking to save costs, upgrade infrastructure or become more agile should consider implementing a VoIP strategy. The uptake of VoIP has rocketed in recent years owing to the savings businesses can make on consolidating their infrastructure and, more importantly, on their call costs. On average, a business can save between 25 to 30% on its call spend simply by moving numbers onto a VoIP platform.

Mark Pillow, Managing Director of VoIP Unlimited, says, ‘One of the key considerations when looking to move to VoIP is the quality of the internet connection. The nature of VoIP is such that all calls run over the company’s internet connection. Therefore serious consideration needs to be given as to how much bandwidth a business will need for both data and telephony. At VoIP Unlimited we are able to provide Ethernet connectivity, at extremely competitive rates, designed for businesses moving to VoIP.

‘Additional benefits of VoIP are: Consolidation of connectivity/ISDN from multiple providers to a single supplier/line

All VoIP to VoIP calls within our network are free of charge A feature rich service which is easily configured to your businesses requirements.’

Tech boss pledges £1m to keep businesses safe online

Lawrence Jones

The CEO of cloud and hosting firm UKFast has pledged £1m to keeping businesses safe online, as the threat from hackers and data thieves continues to grow.

With high profile attacks and data leaks becoming increasingly common, the £30m turnover business is launching its latest endeavour to build a safer environment for online businesses.

Lawrence Jones, who heads up the technology company, said, ‘The 12 months since the launch of the BASEfund (Building A Safer Environment online fund) in 2013 have highlighted the need to invest further.

‘There are hundreds of thousands of websites that continue to host without even a basic firewall. Often household names and websites you may use on a regular basis simply fail to invest in the security element of their hosting, leaving your data at risk. It’s a little like driving without insurance. Only there is no legislation to insist on forcing businesses to protect their customers.

‘BASEfund helps subsidise the growing costs of protecting

your websites and encourages business leaders to start focussing on this very critical topic.’

UKFast’s BASEfund makes top quality security solutions available to businesses that can’t cope with rapidly rising prices from IT companies hoping to cash-in on the growing fear of online attack. The fund offers grants of up to £5,000 for businesses to add security features to their networks and help them to grow to the next level.

Alongside these grants, the BASEfund now offers free vulnerability scanning as well as subsidised penetration testing, which highlights where hackers or cybercriminals could gain access to data or cause harm to a business’s networks.

Jones added, ‘The Heartbleed and Cryptolocker bugs pushed cybersecurity to the forefront of everyone’s minds and unfortunately led to some providers hoping to cash in on the fear. We’re doing the opposite; we’re offering subsidies to help businesses access the highest levels of security testing and protection.

‘In doing so, hopefully we can help to build a safer environment for businesses online.’

The BASEfund is the latest step in UKFast’s drive to make the web a safer place; in 2012 the hosting firm launched its cybersecurity division Secarma, who last year revealed the vast amount of data still stored on second-hand devices and warned of the speed in which hackers can crack passwords.

Amicus ITS invests in IT infrastructure upgradeManaged Service Provider, Amicus ITS, is embarking on a major project to virtualise its own physical IT infrastructure.

The AITS Cirrus Project, which represents a six figure investment, will incorporate the latest cloud technologies enabling the ambitious IT firm to better protect its data and counter the ever present threat of commercial downtime and security breaches, whilst enjoying the full benefit of increased agility and collaboration – wherever the workforce is based and whatever the size of the organisation.

Selecting the right IT Managed Services Partner

There has been a noticeable increase in the number of businesses choosing to use Managed Services for their IT, whether for the short or long term. Every business has a different requirement - whether providing temporary cover; enhancing and working alongside an in house team to provide a comprehensive service desk to clear a back-log. Some business also choose Managed Services to provide the full service, delivering every aspect of their IT.

Whatever the requirement, there are several areas that businesses should consider, including flexibility, expertise and value for money. Anthony Green, Sales and Marketing Director for IT specialist, Blue Chip, highlights what companies should look for and avoid when it comes to selecting a managed services provider for their IT:

1. How flexible is the provider? Will they tailor their service to your requirements, or offer a ‘service package’ that may cover some of your needs but not others whilst including areas that are irrelevant?

2. Do they offer good value: do they insist on a fixed fee arrangement or offer ‘pay-as-you-go’ so you only ever use and pay for what you need?

3. Are they scalable when it comes to Helpdesk Services - will they allow your business to purchase services on your terms by regular payments or through an advanced commitment, enabling you to budget in a way that suits you?

4. Do they include 24/7 cover as standard, or is that an expensive add-on? In addition, is your IT provider giving you genuine 24/7 cover in a live manned operations centre or is this cover provided by a person on a mobile phone?

5. Does their 24/7 cover include alerts which can be dealt with by the provider around the clock, or allocated so that issues arising during working hours are dealt with by your in-house team and out-of-hours problems are resolved by the provider, providing a 24x7 service whilst maximising the return from your in-house team?

6. How qualified are they when delivering the Helpdesk service to enhance and complement existing IT teams – do they offer vendor-level expertise in the areas specific to your needs? Can they resolve issues efficiently so that productivity and performance are unaffected and as little service time as possible is spent resolving an issue?

‘Working with our customers for the last two decades has led us to develop a Managed Services portfolio that challenges the traditional approach of other service providers, who typically command payment per discipline. Our tailored pay-per-usage approach, in conjunction with 24/7 support and monitoring as standard for all customers from our fully manned Operation Centre, has resulted in continuous growth and customer retention.’

Enhanced Celebrates 20 Years of Growth

premium cost-effective service from an enviable portfolio of skill and experience.

A young Simon White was taken on as technical manager, and Mark Pollock as support manager. Now 20 years later and after a management buyout in 2007, Simon is

Managing Director supported by Mark and fellow directors in one of the most successful and fastest growing IT companies in the South of England.

Enhanced is recognised for their expertise in working with companies who believe that IT is at the core of their business growth. They make it their business to make the IT technology and

Rebranded as Enhanced in 2008, the company has grown from strength to strength. With a workforce of over 30, they moved premises in 2011 from very meagre offices in Ferndown to state of the art 5,000 sq. ft. self-contained premises in Poole.

“We continue to invest in our products, service and people,” said Simon. “As National award winners for our customer service and support we are determined to continue our promise of 20 years ago, to be exceptional in everything we do. To achieve this we have to ensure we continue to offer the best possible professional services from a team dedicated to its people and their combined success.”

One in ten businesses in the south west back zero-hours contractsA survey has revealed that 14% of south west firms are in favour of zero-hours contracts despite the widespread controversy surrounding them.

Of this figure, over two fifths believe that these contracts would allow them to respond quickly to fluctuating demand for their services, while 43% believe that it would grant their employees greater flexibility in the workplace.

The figures are taken from the Close Brothers Business Barometer, a quarterly poll of SME owners and senior management that gauges sentiment on a number of issues that affect their business.

Rob added, ‘The pride that our staff take in their roles is enviable, we know we have the best team of recruiters locally and we wanted to say thank you to them for making the business what it is today. 10 years is quite an achievement and we wanted to let them know how much we appreciate their hard work.’

With offices at the Square in Bournemouth, Bond Williams has continued to grow in recent years, despite a difficult financial business landscape. The team is now 14 people and the company plans further expansion as it continues into its second decade.

t has always been part of Enhanced’s mission to help worthy causes, not just by donating cheques but becoming actively involved.

Actively being the key word! The team at Enhanced has climbed mountains, swam seas, cycled thousands of miles, organised balls and even visited third world countries all in the

name of charity. They have supported Julia’s House, Macmillan Nurses, The Sparkle Appeal and many more worthy causes.

However to celebrate their 20 years they wanted to make a real difference to one particular charity, the Boo Charity.

The Boo Charity is a charity founded by Russell Hicks, a close friend of Simon White, in memory of his late wife Sarah - affectionately known as ‘Boo’. Sadly, Sarah lost her battle to cancer at the age of 36. During her last years she sought alternative treatment in Kenya where she was touched by the compassion and love shown to her. Boo’s lasting wish was to help African Children who are disadvantaged through economic poverty.

Enhanced set themselves a challenge, to find 20 companies who would help them raise £20,000 in their 20th year, by raising £1,000

Enhanced help charities growNot only do Enhanced work with charities to help them grow, but they work tirelessly at fundraising to raise money to support their chosen charities.

each. Every single penny raised would then go directly to the Boo Charity and be used to continue to support Boo’s wishes.

Simon visited Kenya in April 2014 in order to get a better understanding of the poor conditions and to witness them for himself. “Seeing the work being done to help people in absolute appalling conditions was inspirational,” said Simon.

Enhanced are planning to use the money raised in the 20/20 initiative to help build new classrooms, fund teachers and help develop courses, including a basic computing course which Enhanced will be heavily involved with.

On target to raise the £20,000 and well beyond, Enhanced will continue to be active in helping the lives of those less fortunate.

ever tried walking a mile in someone else’s shoes?Lewis-Manning Hospice is inviting people to join them on Sunday 21st September for a walk a mile event through Bournemouth Gardens. Sounds easy?

Well, actually, there is a slight twist! The Poole hospice, which offers free palliative care and support to over 650 local people a year living with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses, is asking participants to think of others and put themselves in someone else’s shoes by wearing something on their feet that they wouldn’t normally wear. The event, sponsored by Yellow Buses, will begin at 2pm, leaving from the war memorial in Bournemouth Gardens and going to the pier and back.

The charity has suggested people wear anything from cloggs, stilettos (for the men!) and skis to skates, football boots, clown shoes or any other crazy footwear and is urging people to post their shoe photos on its dedicated Facebook page facebook.com/LMH.WalkAMile using the hashtag #WalkAMileShoes.

Dorset firm beats big names to be ‘agency of the year’ and ‘best place to work’

Last call for Startups Awards 2014Sponsored by Simply Business and organised by Startups.co.uk, the number one website for start-ups and small businesses, the awards are open for entry until 12th September.

Local business wins at national awards

Health-on-Line collecting the award

The winners of the Your Money Awards 2014 were revealed at a ceremony at the Merchant Taylors’ Hall in the City of London recently, with Bournemouth-based company Health-on-Line being the proud winners of ‘Best Online Healthcare Provider’. This new category for the Your Money Awards was based not only on the services provided to consumers over the internet, but on the subsequent contact with staff after that point, and demonstrates the level of customer care that is provided by Health-on-Line.

As well as market leading service, winners are also judged to have offered the most competitively-priced products over the previous 12 months. The awards, which are of national recognition, take into account all areas of finance from health insurance to mortgages, and saw companies such as Tesco, John Lewis and Nationwide also receive awards.

A Bournemouth digital marketing company has beaten off top competition to be named both ‘agency of the year’ and the ‘best place to work’ in international awards judged by journalists and industry insiders.

Adido - which works with household names, such as Orange and M&S, as well as regional success stories, like BHLive and Olives et al - won gold awards in both categories in the Best in Biz 2014 International Awards. And came out in front of much larger organisations, including delivery giants, DHL.

Gold and Silver for FurleighDorset-based vineyard and winery Furleigh Estate has scooped gold and silver medals at the inaugural Champagne & Sparkling Wine World Championships. Furleigh Estate’s Classic Cuvée 2009 was awarded a gold medal at the awards, while the Blanc de Blancs 2009 won a silver.

Many businesses rely on online tools to run successfully by carrying out processes, automating communications, sharing content, recording data and generally helping the business to run smoothly.

Here’s our top 7 tools (some might say our trade secrets) which we think are worth their weight in gold.

A CRM with a differencePipeDrive is a great tool for storing all your contacts (suppliers, clients, prospects, competitors). Customise it to work for you and calculate deal values to push your sales through the pipeline in a clear user interface.

Getting socialSocial media is free so why wouldn’t you use it? It helps you to share your news and is great for your SEO. We highly recommend Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Google+ and Pinterest.

Pre-schedule social postsUse Hootsuite to pre-populate your social networks to schedule your news for specific dates and times. It also helps you to analyse your traffic and manage several accounts on one dashboard.

Screen sharingNeed to share screens with people in another office or even another country? The screen sharing tool join.me allows you to share screens and audio in a fast and secure environment.

Video sharingIf you’re regularly sharing videos then Vimeo is the tool for you. It doesn’t pollute your content with adverts and has a lot less clutter than other tools. You can even password protect each individual video so you can share them with just the people you choose.

Quick web mock upsUsing Balsamiq you can quickly drag and drop elements of a website to create quick mock ups and layouts before getting your designers involved.

Google AnalyticsEveryone has a website and most of you will have GA. Why not analyse where your web traffic is coming from, what keywords they’re searching for and really get to know your customers.

We are not associated with the tools mentioned above. We’re simply happy customers giving credit where credit is due and sharing the good news with other businesses.

Product innovation is crucial to societal and economic development within the UK. Paul Tranter, Managing Director of Pera Technology, discusses the technologies that are already close to hitting the market and the innovations that he believes are on the horizon.

¶ rapid drink coolers It makes sense that this type of technology, which rapidly cools individual drink cans, will be incredibly popular for social occasions as well as in retail applications; especially as soon as people start realising the true power costs of constant refrigeration. Pera Technology helped to develop a product innovation called V-Tex, through a consortium called ‘RapidCool’ that will do just this.

· the internet of things Due to the rise in smart phone and tablet computer use, there is an almost universal expectation of internet connectivity in any location. As this continues, innovative solutions to help devices talk together, and for free, will be required. I therefore expect proposals for products which use free to connect WiFi tags and radio frequency communications technology to start coming across my desk in the next few years.

¸ the rise of ‘biological machines’ Synthetic biology is an extremely diverse but exciting field and can be defined as the design and construction of new biological parts, devices, and systems. It incorporates the re-design of existing, natural biological systems for useful purposes. The most recent example from Pera Technology is the cleaning of waste water using microbial fuel cells. You can see more at www.youtube.com/watch?v=H1OYY4u0PqA

¹ High power storage centres As fully electrical vehicles become a common sight, high density storage centres will also become a necessity. These facilities will need to charge slowly from sustainable energy sources but also be able to discharge energy quickly. So there will be a need for large scale electrical energy stores, almost like huge batteries.

º alternative energy generators Recent research from the University of Liverpool suggests that solar panels will come down in price and yet I believe the cost of installation may still remain prohibitive. In my mind, the solution is hybridisation

iNNovatioNs to sHape tHe NeXt teN Years10

and combining the installation cost so a house for example benefits from solar, with a bit of wind power, backed by a ground source heat pump. This would not only yield greater results but make energy generation less susceptible to changing weather conditions.

» the power of microwaves The catering industry harnessed the potential of microwaves for heating many years ago but it remains relatively ignored elsewhere. I expect to see rapid heat sources being used more widely for applications such as processing new material types and sterilising environments in the healthcare sector. I see microwaves replacing conventional gas and electrical heat sources in many industrial processes. This video illustrates an example: www.youtube.com/watch?v=KD9XF-qSik8

¼ materials get smart I’m confident that we will start seeing the next generation of ‘smart materials’ within the next ten years; so materials that are able to change colour or even self-regulate temperature. From this we may see the development of products such as self-heating mats so that heating can be safely focussed on a single room, piece of process plant, or pipework section.

½ the next generation of paints and coatings It’s easy to forget that everything around us has a finish or coating of some sort. There has been a large step-change from solvent based paints to water-based options in recent years. As eco-credentials become more important to companies and consumers alike, I expect to see new water-based solutions that provide a wider range of benefits to the modern consumer.

¾ the rise of the drop box As internet shopping continues to dominate the high-street, there is a growing call for convenient and secure delivery locations. We are already starting to see lockers at petrol stations and collection points at convenience stores but I’m expecting to see dedicated bins on the front of houses and the development of solutions featuring radio frequency ID tags.

¿ products designed just for you The customisation of products is becoming much more common from the colour of the roof on a new car to a bespoke coloured fridge or trainers stamped with initials. I’m going to watch with interest to see how manufacturers and distributors deal with the challenge of these last minute custom changes and how it begins to seep into other markets such as customised medical kits.

Trant Engineering wins two industry awards for flood defence workThey worked through atrocious weather conditions to deliver an innovative flood protection scheme for a vital facility which supplies electricity to one million homes and businesses.

Now the £8m project for National Grid by Southampton-based Trant Engineering at Walham 400kV substation, on the River Severn flood plain in Gloucestershire, has been recognised with two industry awards.

The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) voted the scheme major award winner and member’s award winner in its annual awards for civil engineering excellence in the south west.

In the 18-month scheme, completed last December, Trant installed a range of defences to provide permanent protection against a 1-in-1,000-year flood event.

Chamber helps businesses go global Encouraging new figures reveal that firms in Dorset exported nearly £132m worth of goods with support from the county’s voice of business.

Companies drew on expertise at the Dorset Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) as the business support organisation processed some 12,022 export documents in 2013-14, up by an impressive quarter from the year before.

Now the chamber is expanding its services and support after relaunching its Export Documentation department as International Trade Services.

The chamber is one of just two issuing bodies authorised to certify export documentation in the south west but also has a renewed focus on training, advice, networking and overseas links.

Further chamber support includes its Dorset International Business Network export club which next meets on 9th September at the Carlton Menzies hotel in Bournemouth when representatives of the British-Polish Chamber of Commerce will be on hand.

Hamworthy Heating shows businesses how to meet energy goals at Green pea event Hamworthy Heating has demonstrated to local businesses how to cut fuel bills at Poole Council’s Green PEA event by demonstrating advanced cast iron boiler technology in an interactive ‘road-show’ van.

Following a tour of the UK from Gretna Green to Land’s End, the van was in attendance for local businesses at Poole Council’s ‘Green Positive Environmental Action Scheme’ or ‘Green PEA’ event held at the Bournemouth and Poole College.

Fully kitted with two demonstration boilers, videos and statistics and manned by commercial heating experts, the ‘road show’ van provides a one stop shop of information, allowing businesses a thorough investigation into how they can reduce their energy bills.

Hamworthy Heating’s Stuart Turner explains ways of energy and cost saving to Mark Bumford of Poole Town FC.

MANUFACTURING ORDERS AND EMPLOYMENT GROWTH EDGE UP FURTHER The recovery in British manufacturing continued apace in the last quarter, with faster growth in domestic orders and output, according to the latest CBI quarterly Industrial Trends Survey.

The survey of 481 firms reported robust growth in orders in the three months to July. Total order book growth edged up on last quarter’s nineteen-year high, whilst domestic orders rose at their fastest pace since 1988, although export orders were flat. Numbers employed in the manufacturing sector also continued to rise strongly.

Firms are upbeat about the next quarter, with expectations for total

new orders growth at their strongest since 1977, and export orders set to rebound.

Looking to the year ahead, manufacturers’ plans for investment in product and process innovation are at their strongest since 1989, with robust plans for spending on plant & machinery, and buildings. The number of firms investing to expand capacity reached a record high (since 1979). However, the proportion of firms concerned that political and economic conditions abroad may limit export orders rose sharply to a five-quarter high.

Control phreaks… all part of the serviceMike Lombard of UKh2o, a Kinetico water softener specialist, has been in the plumbing industry for over 20 years and started fitting water softeners when his wife opened Ripples bathroom showroom in Westbourne.

He explained, ‘Some misconceptions still exist about water softeners but technology has advanced significantly in recent years. The life span of our products is 25 years with an average pay back time of three to four years.’ He continued, ‘With soft water, up to 75% less detergent, washing powder, soap and shampoo is used, and the latest government figures estimate a saving of up to 25% on energy bills due to washing machines, boilers and hot-water cylinders remaining more efficient.’

Following are some key facts relating to water softeners and the water supplied locally:

Dorset is officially designated as being a hard water area. Hard water has higher levels of magnesium and calcium dissolved in it, and it is these elements that are the cause of hard water.

Calcium and magnesium dissolved in water are responsible for limescale deposits.

Limescale builds up in pipes at the rate of approximately 1.5mm/annum.

Consensus Employment Law, established by Lesley Walford in September 2012, is celebrating its second successful year in business this month.

Consensus is different in that Lesley has 15 years experience as a Managing Director and thereby an employer, as well as 8 years with a local high profile law firm, as a solicitor. This experience has given Lesley an insight into the complexities of the workplace that most other solicitors just do not have.

In the two years since Consensus was formed, there have been many significant changes in employment law.

Some of the more important changes that Lesley has advised on are flexible working, the tribunal system, whistleblowing and the introduction of the pension auto-enrollment scheme. Additionally there has been the

Phones 4 Business Ltd, the locally based supplier and maintainer of business telephone systems, is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year.

Call Reporting which monitors all calls, and in the process registers any strange calling patterns to premium rate numbers (particularly out of hours), or high levels of spend to known problem destinations, such as Cuba, Zimbabwe and Latvia. If any of these patterns are detected, as a first step, an immediate block can be put on outbound calls from the lines being used to make the calls.

Phones 4 Business has a 24/7 hotline, and depending on the service package purchased, on site attendance of an engineer is guaranteed within a four to twelve working hours time frame.

All systems come with installation, programming and user-training, with the first year’s maintenance package being absolutely free. Options available for the installed system range from computer telephone integration, dialling from Outlook for example, and uninterrupted power supply, to call recording and call management.

A recent survey carried out on behalf of Phones 4 Business showed that 85% of the clients surveyed would recommend the company to friends and business contacts, and that 92% were either satisfied or very satisfied with the service offered.

Christine Paul, Company Secretary of PFM Assoc Ltd, stated, ‘The service we have received in the past, and can also guarantee for the future, has been excellent. Phones 4 Business has always been approachable, and if there is a problem with any of our services they will keep chasing until normal service is resumed.’ She continued, ‘I have been approached by many companies offering reduced rates, but I always find that good quality of service is better than a cheaper option. Their staff are always friendly and willing to help, or to suggest alternatives. I recommend them as a service provider.’

Established in 1999 by Malcolm Martineau, the company has grown to become one of the south’s leading suppliers of phone systems. The continued growth has largely been made possible by offering first class products, excellent customer service, both lease or purchase options of its telephone systems, and of course by keeping pace with advances in technology. Particular emphasis is placed on both the integrity and usability of the systems installed.

Telecoms phreaking (hacking) now costs UK businesses an estimated £1bn per year*, and is becoming the largest source of fraud across the UK. Malcolm commented, ‘It’s a fact that phone systems are just as vulnerable to being hacked as PCs, and whilst most companies go to great lengths to protect their LANS and PCs from these attacks with firewalls etc, they leave their phone systems completely unprotected.’

To minimise the risk of phreaking, Phones 4 Business offers a service called Exceptional

invest to save For every millimetre of limescale build up you can expect approximately a 10% increase in the amount of energy used, from a 10.6% energy increase for one millimetre to a 29.4% energy increase for 3 millimetres. This level of limescale will therefore be responsible for, more or less, a 30% loss of heating efficiency.

Kinetico water softeners remove magnesium and calcium, the elements that make water hard.

Water softeners increase the efficiency and longevity of boilers.

Clothes and towels washed in soft water feel nicer, and last longer. Shower cubicles, tiles, sinks and baths do not become stained with the calcium dissolved in water.

Kinetico softeners use an ion exchange system, and are non electric, which makes them cheaper to run, requiring only the addition of salt.

Kinetico has over 40 years experience and was the pioneer of the non electric valve, it is still a world leading company today.

Commercial system users state that they save up to 50% on their machine maintenance costs, as well as the down time saved as a consequence.

Domestic system users can save up to £400 per annum on toiletries and cleaning products, based on a family of four.

All water softener applications are different, which is why Mike and his team at UKh2o will assess every potential installation individually. This way you get a tailor-made solution designed for your business, or residential, needs.

extra £900,000 will build on success of local sustainable transport schemesSeven communities in England are set to benefit from £900,000 additional government funding to extend their sustainable transport schemes, Baroness Kramer has announced.

The funding has been allocated to existing local projects supported by the Department for Transport’s Local Sustainable Transport Fund.

Those benefitting from funding include: Bournemouth Borough Council: £50,000 for design of a high quality cycle route serving schools and employment centres

Dorset County Council: £64,000 towards plans for 20mph zones in Weymouth and Dorchester town centres

This announcement builds on £440m sustainable transport funding announced on 11th July, part of £2bn the government is investing on a wide range of measures to drive forward sustainable transport, including encouraging the uptake of electric cars and other ultra-low emission vehicles and schemes to promote greener public transport, cycling and walking.

New team at snows seat poole aims for 15% growth

L-r: Sam Patterson and Paul Miller

The Poole-based SEAT retailer has appointed an experienced new management team.

General Sales Manager Sam Patterson wants to see three-year-old Snows SEAT Poole in Blandford Road, Hamworthy, grow by 15% this year as the dealership looks to capitalise on the growing popularity of the Barcelona-based brand.

Sam said, ‘We are really looking to put the dealership on the map and grow sales for SEAT. It is the only SEAT dealership in Dorset.’

Father-of-three Sam, 45, from Poole, has built a successful track record over 20 years working as a Sales Manager, Franchise Manager and General Manager for another leading car manufacturer. Prior to joining Snows SEAT in Poole he was a Franchise Manager with Peugeot running five sites.

He has assembled a new team, several of whom

Drivers ‘don’t want mandatory telematics’ The majority of UK vehicle owners are not in favour of EU plans to make the installation of in-vehicle telematics for all new cars mandatory from October 2015, new research has revealed.

According to a new poll carried out by Motorpoint, 71.5% of UK drivers believe this move should not go ahead, as there are growing concerns the technology could be used as some form of Big Brother surveillance technology.

Onboard telematics devices automatically record a range of information that can be sent to insurers regarding the behaviour, speeds and usage of vehicles by owners.

It is therefore something of a contentious issue for drivers that their whereabouts will be constantly monitored, while the way they use their vehicle could also have a significant bearing on the amount they pay for insurance in the future.

The poll took into account the views of more than 2,000 UK motorists and highlighted the need for drivers’ opinions to be taken into account when the EU pushes forward with plans to make in-vehicle telematics mandatory for all new models next year.

Families need versatile vehicles.

To that end the Volkswagen Tiguan is an ideal solution. This sports utility vehicle shares similar looks to the larger Tourag.

The test model is the 2-litre diesel 4 Motion Match finished in metallic dark blue. As with all VWs it feels solid and dependable from the clunking of the doors to the high quality interior. A growing family such as ours does come with a good deal of paraphernalia even if just venturing out on a day trip. Our tandem pushchair always has to accompany us if we are going to have a relaxing and enjoyable time. And it fits snugly in the boot although the rear parcel shelf has to be removed to make this possible.

The rear seats can be moved forward which gives about six inches more space in the boot, if required.

In terms of roominess it scores well. But it definitely would benefit from a panoramic glass roof as indeed do other vehicles in this sector; I’m thinking of offerings from Peugeot and Nissan. Without it, it is a bit dark inside especially on a dull day.

However, when the temperatures warm up – as is the case with Britain’s temperamental unpredictable weather - the air conditioning capably brings the temperature down from uncomfortably hot to pleasantly cool in around five minutes after setting off.

To drive this 4WD crossover is enjoyable with plenty of power in second and third gear, although if it is changed into third gear when the revs are too low, performance is weak. It’s a vehicle that when driven properly is a delight. That diesel unit, which is a bit rattly, is pleasingly economical and the six speed gearbox is generally smooth, although on a few occasions a little notchy. Where you might expect to find the handbrake there is simply a switch because this model has a modern electronic handbrake. There is also another switch called Auto Hold. It’s fast from 0 to 60 mph so it does make up for any delay. The engine stop/start can be relied upon to kick in whenever the Tiguan comes to a halt.

On top of the already impressively long standard equipment list, which includes automatic lights and wipers, as well as ‘Park Assist’, Volkswagen’s excellent self-parking system that squeezes the Tiguan into spaces just 1.1m longer than itself, a number of extra features have been ushered in.

The camera that appears in the centre of the dash when reversing is useful, making it an easy car to manoeuvre into awkward spots.

My wife feels that the seating position should be higher up because she feels low down. In terms of road presence it fairs well compared to other high end offerings from BMW and Audi and is certainly an alternative to Land Rover’s Freelander.

Law firm Harold G Walker creates opportunity for Dorset women

Harold G Walker recently joined forces with Successful Women Ltd, a training company owned by ex-Chief Superintendent of Dorset Police, Gill Donnell MBE, to deliver the award-winning Springboard Women’s Development Programme.

Gill Donnell MBE worked in Dorset Police

for 30 years and reached the rank of Chief Superintendent . Since leaving the force in 2011 she has put her skills to good use, creating a training business which helps and encourages women to the next stages of development in their lives.

The Dorset-based law firm, Harold G Walker, is the first firm in Dorset to join forces with Gill and sponsored eight women, with a variety of skills and backgrounds, to take part in the four part development programme and because of the results, the law firm has pledged to give further commitment and support to the programme.

Successful candidates had to either work in the voluntary, charity or community sector, be a full-time carer, or they were looking to return to work after time spent at home (perhaps as stay at home mum) or were about to retire or were retired and wanted to return to the workplace.

mad about the buoyPartners at Ellis Jones Solicitors were all at sea when they inspected their very own buoy in Poole Harbour.

Dick Linford, Commodore of Parkstone Yacht Club, kindly hosted six partners from the law firm on his yacht as a ‘thank you’ for sponsoring the race mark for more than eight years.

The buoy is just off the North Channel in the south east end of the harbour.

It is well known to the hundreds of sailors from Parkstone Yacht Club who regularly race in the harbour every year.

Nigel Smith, Ellis Jones’ Managing Partner, said: “We always say it’s good to get your bearings by using our services but for sailors in Poole Harbour that really is the case.

‘The race buoy is a great way of getting our name across to hundreds of people in the most unlikely, but picturesque, of settings. It was good to see the Ellis Jones’ name standing out loud and proud.’

Ellis Jones partners, including Nigel Smith, Managing Partner (second right), inspect the Ellis Jones’ buoy in Poole Harbour.

Lawyers back new tougher penalties for mobile phone use at the wheelLawyers at Moore Blatch welcome the announcement that the penalty for drivers who use a mobile phone at the wheel could be doubled to six points.

Moore Blatch Personal Injury Partner, Ciaran McCabe comments, ‘As a firm we see every day the devastation caused by road accidents and the effect this has on people’s lives. It really only takes one moment of distraction for accidents to occur and leave people dealing with life-altering injuries.

‘We hope the new tougher penalties will serve to deter motorists from using a mobile phone when at the wheel and make them realise the seriousness of what they are doing.’

Under the new rules, as well as facing hefty points drivers could also be banned if two mobile offences occur over three years.

For newly qualified drivers, they will face a ban after committing one offence as the threshold for penalty points is six. There are also plans to increase fines from £100 to £150.

rejuvenated new car market continues to grow as smmt revises forecast

172,907 new cars registered in July, a rise of 6.6% and the 29th consecutive month of growth.

Economic confidence and attractive finance have driven the market up 10.1% year-to-date to 1,460,172 units.

Faster-than-expected first half-year growth prompts upward revision of 2014 market forecast to 2.45 million registrations, up 8.1% on 2013.

Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said, ‘July saw the new car market extend its record period of growth to a 29th month, as confident consumers took advantage of an array of new products and attractive finance deals on the latest fuel-efficient new cars.

‘The continued positivity has led to an uplift in the SMMT full year forecast to 2.45 million passenger car registrations, a rise of 8.1%. However, the more moderate growth of the last three months shows that overall demand is beginning to stabilise.’

WESTOVER GROUP SUPPORTED WILTON SUPERCARS FOR SIXTH CONSECUTIVE YEARWestover Group revved its engines at Wilton House Supercars again this year - for the sixth consecutive time. The group took more than 75 of its newest models, displaying cars from its 14 manufacturer brands - including the very latest offerings from premium car companies GT-R, Jaguar, Land Rover and Lotus.

‘We took a larger and more exciting cast of cars to Wilton House Supercars than ever before,’ says Paul Dillon, Westover Group Joint Managing Director. ‘It’s quite an operation getting 75 plus cars out of the showrooms and into place at Wilton but the result is a great display of cars and a good day out for local car enthusiasts and families alike.

‘In addition to our very own supercars – like the Lotus Elise, Lotus Evora and Jaguar’s F-Type Cabriolet – we’ve introduced a flurry

of new vehicle launches in recent weeks and we had all the latest models with us. It was a great chance for people to see them all in one place for the first time. Supercars is one of just two events we attend where all our cars are out together (the other being our own motor show in Bournemouth), so it was a rare opportunity to get a complete overview of today’s car choices.’

Westover showcased super-minis, family cars, SUVs, 4x4s, prestige and performance vehicles, as well as the very latest in electric and hybrid vehicle technology.

Riverside Restaurant receives Gold in the Taste of the West Awards 2014

Precious silver celebration The New Forest Tourism Association has celebrated its silver anniversary after 25 years of promoting businesses in a unique partnership with New Forest District Council.

The Riverside Restaurant at West Bay is Dorset’s long-established and famed seafood restaurant has been owned by the Watson family for 52 years and this year Arthur and Jan Watson celebrate 50 years in charge. On the menu you can expect to see the freshest and best fish and shellfish from local waters, prepared for you at time of order by Head Chef, Tony Shaw and his team. The menu changes daily according to what is available from the market and local landings that day. As well as fish there are always daily vegetarian and meat dishes. The dessert menu is vast and mouth-watering and there is an extensive wine list too.

Whether it is a celebration, a romantic meal for two or simply a meal out with family or friends, it is the aim of the General Manager, Neil Chilcott and his team, to give every guest an enjoyable dining experience in an atmosphere that always puts the customer first.

A milestone has been reached as Screen Bites food and film festival celebrates its 10th birthday this year. In celebration, Screen Bites 10th anniversary will be marked on 2nd October, in jubilant fashion with an appropriately food-focussed gala night to be held in the suitably celebratory setting of St Giles House at Wimborne St Giles by kind permission of Lord Nicholas Ashley-Cooper, the 12th Earl of Shaftesbury.

In addition, the party atmosphere will be made complete with exquisite food created especially for the Gala

by Lisa Osman of Provisio at All Hallows and award-winning wines from Langham Wines.

The Gala Night will celebrate an amazing success story; Screen Bites was created to support and promote the outstanding food and drink available in Dorset and using a healthy dose of inspiration, creativity, and huge support over 10 years from main sponsors Olives Et Al of Sturminster Newton, each Screen Bites event combines superb films, each with a food element, with tastings and more from local food producers.

GENUINE DEMOCRACY OR ‘DLEP’?Uniting the Conurbation welcomes the government’s recently announced £66.3m investment in our local economy which Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership (DLEP) says could result in the creation of 25,000 jobs, the building of more than 3,000 homes and the generation of up to £500m in public and private investment.

It is nevertheless odd to see that such a large injection of public funding was not secured directly by our elected local government authorities but by a ‘partnership’ which is dominated by a small group of unelected business people. It is also very strange that, although the original invitation to our conurbation to bid for a City Deal stipulated that it must ‘contain proposals for stronger governance’ across our ‘economic area’, the DLEP Strategic Economic Plan (the basis of the bid) says nothing of substance about this.

We must have on-going and meaningful dialogue between our representatives in local government and the business community which drives economic growth. Queen Victoria’s day was the heyday of municipal enterprise, whose initiative and breadth of vision created an infrastructure which allowed industry to prosper. Unfortunately the view from Whitehall seems to be that such dialogue was not taking place and indeed, today’s fractured structure of local government in the south east Dorset conurbation is clearly not up to such a mighty task. Does that make it right to hand the purse-strings of public funding to an unelected body such as DLEP?

This is a time of very expensive and disjointed local government. The challenge for Whitehall is to grasp the nettle and give our conurbation a single unitary authority which will provide stronger governance for our economic area and meaningful dialogue with the business community. That is the democratic way forward and the need is truly urgent.

Tourism is the keyWhen Dr Augustus B. Granville put Poole Bay firmly on the map in his 1841 book, ‘The Spas of England’, our Jurassic Coast had its tourism industry created for it, albeit for those with consumption and weak respiratory systems benefiting from our benign microclimate here.

Those crafty Victorians were soon selling bottled Bournemouth AIR (with delightful glass pine cone stoppers).

Our touristic conurbation, including Christchurch and Mudeford Spit and Brownsea Island and the Purbecks, offers so much and the sea can be taken so much advantage of that Bournemouth has created its new ‘Coastal Park’ further uniting the aqua sports offer of our nine miles of sand.

Bournemouth was the first town to achieve two concurrent ‘Business Improvement District’ schemes voted for and run by local business, and the Costal BID in particular ties in local hospitality and runs national advertising in metropolitan train stations, radio stations and beyond.

‘Festivals’ are a huge draw and the list continues to expand seeing the Bournemouth Marathon Festival and the WHEELS Festival newly added.

Just think Bournemouth Air Festival and you get the picture!Complacency does not come into it though as the government has

awarded funding for the creation of the National Coastal Tourism Academy which has completed its first year honing focus and skills for the tourism industry in the BH postcode.

Training seminars and reward schemes for staff are core, and recognition is generously awarded for those staff members who go ‘above and beyond’. We are quick to complain, but we should be equally quick to praise.

With airport chaos , we’ve got to nail the flag of ‘staycation’ to the Dorset tourism mast and it’s working. That’s why international hotel chains are building several new properties here already!

Capture the moment in Bournemouth

Kevin Cowlard and Des Simmonds

Bournemouth’s Coastal Business Improvement District (BID) has announced the appointment of Bournemouth-based tandi creative media as its new marketing partner for its 2014 autumn marketing campaign.

Des Simmons, Chairman of the Bournemouth Coastal BID said, ‘We had a very specific brief which was to continue use of the successful “Colour Your Life”marketing theme which is designed to enable businesses to run their own individual campaigns while using a common approach and design.’

Kevin Cowlard, Director of tandi creative media enthused, ‘We have created two campaigns; ‘All in Bournemouth’ which will target couples in the 35–55 plus age group and families with children not yet at school who are aware of Bournemouth but have never visited the town. Our

campaign will be very visual and from mid-September we will be launching a poster campaign on the London Underground at some 60 different locations. Our second campaign is “Capture the moment”.’

At a recent information event, hoteliers were excited to learn of the newly launched ‘Capture the moment’ #BournemouthSelfie competition in which they are encouraged to get their guests to take selfies of themselves at various locations around Bournemouth during the summer/autumn months and upload these to Facebook to ‘capture the moment’ from their holidays. There will be a £300 value prize given each month to the best judged selfie photo. The prize will include an accommodation voucher as well as an attraction/restaurant voucher.

Elisabeth Maxwell is a Senior Partner and Outsourcing Partner for international accountants and business advisory firm Mazars. She is also Regional Manager for the new Mazars South Business Unit which encompasses the Poole, Southampton, Brighton, Bristol and Sutton offices. Elisabeth is French and has worked for Mazars in the UK for over 22 years after originally starting as an accountant with Mazars in Paris. Elisabeth is married with two teenage children.

Q What has been your greatest business achievement to date?Helping over 100 companies to set up business in the UK. It gives me a real sense of satisfaction to work with businesses as diverse as retail, construction and IT and to help them start up successfully in this country. Being French and fluent in English can help to bridge cultural differences and smooth the way when understanding gets lost in translation. I’m also really excited that outsourcing, which also falls under my remit, is a growing area of the business despite the economic climate.

Q What advice would you give to a business considering outsourcing? For outsourcing to be effective, the relationship has to be a partnership. Outsourcing has to be done by a firm you can trust and rely on and by someone you can work with to get the right product to suit your business. At Mazars, our outsourcing is a very fluid proposition and we will adapt to the individual needs of every client. We can do everything from complex management accounts to basic bookkeeping and payroll. Our experience and resources allow us to tailor a solution for every client. It’s much more than just a supplier/client relationship.

Q How do you see your role as Regional Manager for the Mazars South Business Unit?My aim is to bring together and share best practice across all our offices in the south to the greater benefit of all our clients. The offices may be spread out across the south but in terms of sharing ideas, resources, expertise and centres of excellence for local business, we work as one.

Q How would you describe your management style?I like to get the best out of people. I truly believe that if you enjoy doing something, you will do it well. I’m not afraid to delegate and yet I am a hands-on manager too. I operate an open door policy for my team as we’re all here to help each other.

Q Who do you most admire in business and why? I’ve a great deal of admiration for any entrepreneurs, whether they’ve started a big business or a small concern. To put your own money into a venture and take risks is a scary thing to do and I have huge respect for anybody who is brave enough to go it alone. When I see something like a small bakery that started out with a couple of people and now employs over 1000, I know that these are the people we need to nurture. We’re fortunate in the UK that the environment for setting up a business here is strong and there’s a lot less red tape compared to other countries.

Q What is your favourite book and why?I don’t have a favourite book. I like to read anything from French literature to English novels. I do have some favourite movies though – ‘Goodbye Lenin’, ‘As Good as it Gets’ and ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ – a Christmas must!
