WHAT IS A NET ZERO PLAN?

Also called a Climate Action Plan, a Net Zero Plan describes a pathway to reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions to achieve net zero energy or emissions by some future date.

It typically includes: • An energy use or emissions inventory • A “business as usual” forecast that predicts energy use or emissions into the future if no climate

actions are pursued• Descriptions and analysis of measures that can lead to net zero energy or emissions by some

future date• Interim target dates for meeting milestones that will lead to net zero goal• A roadmap for implementing short, medium, and long term measures• Mechanisms for tracking progress

SEDAC is partnering with the Illinois Green Economy Network (IGEN) to provide planning, education and support to community colleges to develop Net Zero Plans. Show your commitment to mitigating climate change by collaborating with SEDAC and IGEN colleges to create a pathway to net zero!

WHO WE ARESEDAC, the Smart Energy Design Assistance Center, assists buildings and communities in achieving energy efficiency, saving money, and becoming more sustainable. Our mission is to reduce the energy footprint of the state of Illinois. SEDAC is an applied research program and a public/private collaboration based at the University of Urbana-Champaign. SEDAC services include:

Quick Advice I Energy Assessments I New Construction Design Assistance I Long-term Energy Planning Research | Energy Code Training | Solar Feasibility | Workforce Development

A collaborative processThe IGEN Net Zero Collaborative is customized to your college’s unique strengths, abilities, and limitations. SEDAC works together with your team to determine goals, data collection methods, sectors to focus on, the type of Net Zero Plan to pursue, reasonable target dates, and measures to pursue.

We build off what your college has already accomplished and help you identify ways to involve students, faculty, administrators and building maintenance staff in the planning process.

1. Discuss the scope of the project with SEDAC and form a Net Zero team

2. Collect data for emissions inventory

3. Set goals and timeline for action

4. Help identify climate actions to pursue

5. Review Net Zero Plan and provide feedback

6. Implement solutions and track progress
