1 IntroductionThis lab will guide you through some of the typical SnapProtect v11 operations (also known as CommVaultIntelliSnap for NetApp v11), and will cover one use case: Live Browse and Granular Recovery on VMware andclustered Data ONTAP®. SnapProtect manages NetApp snapshot copies on primary storage, establishes D2Dreplication, and also supports movement of data to tape. Another key feature of the product is its ability to indexand catalog backups. This allows the backup administrator to quickly search for files that need to be restored, using wildcards or other methods. Indexing is often a time consuming process. SnapProtect has a new featuresthat allows a user to perform granular recovery of files/folders without having the need to index the backups. Thisfeature is called Live Browse.

In this lab you will see some of the common management tasks around these data protection operations. Whilethis lab is limited to VMware data, the concepts are foundational and comparable for other data types: ready thedata for backup, take a NetApp snapshot, and perform a restore. SnapProtect is an application that uses a singlepane of glass to allow users to comprehensively protect their enterprise data residing on both NetApp clusteredData ONTAP and 7-mode storage systems.

Notice: NetApp’s Integrated Data Protection provides a rich set of tools and technologies for managingand protecting your data. But protecting the data is not enough. You also need to be able to restore thedata at varying degrees of granularity - from a single file to an entire datacenter. You need some prettysophisticated tools to keep track of the data you have protected. SnapProtect is a tool that can be used tomanage NetApp Integrated Data Protection, and it provides the flexibility you need to manage the costs ofdata protection.

For product demonstration purposes this lab has prestaged components and does not focus on the installationand configuration of the product. The CommCell Server and Linux Media Agent have been installed andconfigured. Feel free to explore the product outside the lab activities. This lab does not include all the possibleapplication agents available in SnapProtect, but the same concepts of backup and restore apply to all applicationsrunning on a NetApp ONTAP storage system.

1 Lab ObjectivesThis lab demonstrates how to create a Storage Policy, perform a Backup, and perform a Restore with GranularRecovery option. Key concepts and navigation of the SnapProtect UI are demonstrated as you work through thelab activities.

1 PrerequisitesThis lab assumes that you have an understanding of NetApp ONTAP data protection principles, and a basicunderstanding of a VMware vSphere environment.

3 Lab ActivitiesThis lab contains the following activities and tasks:

• Tour Configuration on page 5• Perform a Linux Backup on page 21• Perform a Linux Restore on page 46• Perform a Windows Backup on page 57• Perform a Windows Restore on page 65• SnapProtect Archive Backup Walkthrough on page 77• View a Report on page 93

3.1 Tour ConfigurationIn order to become familiar with the SnapProtect console, take a few minutes to navigate (expanding/collapsing) afew commonly accessed areas in the left pane of the console, known as the CommCell Browser.

In this activity you navigate the UI, and perform the simple task of modifying a property necessary for nestedVMware client to back up. In addition you will explore the configuration of the vault options in the storage policy.

communication with vCenter. During the VMware backups, SnapProtect tells vCenter to take VMware levelsnapshots of the VMs. Once the VMs are quiesced and the VMware snapshot occurs, SnapProtect will initiate aNetApp (hardware) Snapshot copy, and then a cleanup/remove of the VMware snap.

A storage policy is used to define the protection model that is used to protect the data. A subclient defines thedata to be protected. Each subclient is associated to a storage policy.

In this section, you define a storage policy, then perform a backup of a Linux VM assigned to your new storagepolicy.
