Preface

This guide describes using the NetBackup Administration Console to manage Media

Manager software and its components on a Windows server. See the NetBackup releasenotes for information about the supported Windows server platforms for NetBackup.

Media Mana ger is th e comp onent of VERITAS NetBackup TM that is used to configure and

manage m edia, drives, and robots that are used to store and retrieve your backup data.

This guide assumes you are familiar with the operating system of the server on which

NetBackup and Media Manager is installed and Windows systems in general.

Microsoft Window s, Window s

Terms used to describe a specific product or operating system developed by

Microsoft, Inc. Some examp les you m ay encoun ter in N etBackup docu men tation are,

Wind ows servers, Wind ows 2000, Window s Server 2003, Wind ows clients, Wind owsplatforms, or Windows GUI.

When Windows or Windows servers is used in the documentation, it refers to all of

the currently supported Windows operating systems. When a specific Windows

prod uct is identified in the d ocumen tation, only that p articular prod uct is valid in that

instance.

specifying a path , use backslashes on M icrosoft Window s and slashes on UN IX.Significant differences between th e platforms are noted in the text.

Tips, notes, and cautions are used to emphasize information. The following samples

describe when each is used.

Tip Used for nice-to-know information, like a sh ortcut.

Note Used for important information that you should know, but that shouldnt cause anydam age to your d ata or your system if you choose to ignore it.

Caution Used for information that will prevent a problem. Ignore a caution at your ownrisk.

Command Usage

The following conventions are frequently used in the synopsis of command usage.

GUI Font Used to d epict grap hical user interface (GUI) objects, such as fields,

listboxes, menu commands, and so on. For example: Enter your

password in the Password field.

Italics Used for placeholder text, book titles, new terms, or emphasis. Replace

placeholder text with your specific text. For examp le: Replace filename

with the name of your file. Do not use file names that contain spaces.

This font is also used to highlight NetBackup server-specific or operating

system-specific differences. For example: This st ep is only applicable for

N etBackup Enterprise Server.

Code Used to show w hat command s you need to type, to identify pathn ames

where files are located, and to distinguish system or application text thatis displayed to you or that is p art of a code example.

Vertical bar or pipe (| )

Separates optional arguments from which the user can choose. For example, when a

comm and has the following format:

command arg1|arg2

In this example, the user can use either the arg1 or arg2 variable.

Navigating Multiple Menu Levels

When navigating multiple menu levels, a greater-than sign (>) is used to indicate a

continued action.

The following example shows how the > is used to condense a series of menu selections

into one step:

Select Start > Programs > VERITAS N etBackup > NetBackup Administration

Console.

The corresponding actions could be described in more steps as follows:

1. ClickStart in the task ba r.

2. Move your cursor to Programs.
