the it network has become a vital part of healthcare. the network is tasked with managing many disparate applications that are all converging on iP. in addition, government initiatives and industry standards are working towards a common goal to make all healthcare records digital.

With the advent of constantly changing technology that is driving everything iP, the network infrastructure becomes the essential vehicle to transport all data, video, and voice functions within the confines of one building out to a multitude of facilities worldwide. from universal electronic medical records to real-time telemedicine, the network must deliver this information faster and more reliably than ever.

to address the unique requirements of the healthcare environment, an industry standard was recently ratified to address the special cabling design and installation needs. aNSi/tia-1179 Healthcare facility telecommunications Cabling Systems standard recommends cabling types, densities, topologies, distances, pathways, and terminations to support clinical systems and nonclinical systems such as rfiD, building automation, nurse call, physio monitoring, security, pharmaceutical inventory, and other applications that will become attached to the iP-based infrastructure.

Berk-tek, a Nexans Company, and legrand|ortronics build on their leadership in premises networks with NetClear® cabling solutions to specifically address the needs of healthcare facilities. these copper and fiber structured cabling systems are uniquely capable of providing the reliable, high bandwidth, high density deployment options so critical in today’s healthcare environments.

Bandwidth and Cable Densities Drive Healthcare Networks

Healthcare networks require higher bandwidth and higher cabling densities to support evolving needs for data creation, storage, and access. This thirst for bandwidth and the need for generous deployment of network outlets are driven, to a large degree, by the following trends in healthcare.

Medical equipment, from MRIs to patient monitoring systems, is now being connected to the healthcare network. To support this proliferation of connected systems, the network infrastructure must provide increased port availability and improved bandwidth.

The upcoming standardization of electronic medical records will increase the compatibility of the various file types and facilitate access to patient information across multiple medical disciplines and geographies. Fast, efficient viewing, movement, and storage of this information will require increased network bandwidth and access speeds.

Long-distance telemedical collaboration, with real-time high-resolution video, requires higher bandwidth and low network latency.

IP everywhere means that nearly all communication needs can be handled by a single IP network – all of which rerquire higher bandwidth to manage the traffic and high cabling densities to accommodate increasing connectivity needs.

Healthcare facilities are generating and sharing more data than ever. from transmitting Mri images to high-definition video consultations, healthcare networks must work at higher speeds to deliver critical services. this is especially important in areas dealing directly with patient care, from diagnostics to surgery. these areas are the ones where sufficient bandwidth must be available for today’s and tomorrow’s needs.

Best practices in the aNSi/tia-1179 standard recommend that healthcare networks support a minimum of 10 Gb/s access speeds in most areas, with 40G or 100G in the healthcare network data center core to ensure critical data availability. a prudent eye toward the future means installing the best cabling system available. the NetClear® GtX Category 6a and NetClear MM10 cabling systems provide the reliable 10G and 40/100G transmission capabilities needed in these environments.

recommended NetClear Solutions for advanced Networks

There is a NetClear system to meet any bandwidth requirement including 10 Gb/s throughout the main network and 40/100 Gb/s in critical areas such as the data center. Using Berk-Tek high-performance cable and Legrand|Ortonics advanced connectivity, NetClear solutions make it easy to satisfy the needs of this challenging environment.

• The NetClear GTX solution uses LANmark™-10G2 UTP cable and Clarity® 10G patch panels, patch cords, and jacks to offer a Cat 6A system with exceptional 10G performance. It is the most advanced Cat 6A solution available.

• The NetClear GTS solution gives you 10G speeds in a shielded cable for improved noise immunity. LANmark-6 FTP foil-shielded cables and shielded Clarity 6 FTP panels and jacks combine Cat 6 performance and excellent shielding effectiveness to provide 10G performance while protecting medical data from EMI.

• The NetClear GT3 solution, using LANmark-2000 UTP cable and Clarity 6 connectivity products, is a premium Cat 6 solution offering a guaranteed performance margin over standard Cat 6 specifications of 8 dB for crosstalk and 6 dB for return loss.

• The NetClear MM10 solution uses laser-optimized GIGAlite™-10 (OM3) fibers and GIGAlite-10XB (OM4+) fiber to provide 10/40/100G support, extended reaches, reduced cable diameters, and noise-free performance. Cables are available in a wide range of duplex and multifiber configurations to support any need, and can be ordered as preterminated cable assemblies or with field-installable connectors.

• The NetClear SM solution gives you single-mode fiber for longer distance building and campus connectivity.

table 1: typical storage requirements for radiological studies

Today’s hospitals, clinics, and labs are collaborating and sharing patient information to enable government agencies, healthcare professionals, and administrators to track regional and national trends, build diagnostic

databases, and share best practices. Aggregating and accessing this data requires high bandwidth, high speed network connections. For example, the typical file size and storage requirements for certain radiological studies are listed in Table 1.

to meet patient care requirements, you cannot have too many communication outlets. aNSi/tia-1179 recognizes that a unique need of medical facilities is the need for different levels of outlet densities in different areas.

operating rooms, intensive care rooms, and similar areas can require upwards of 50 workstation outlets to satisfy evolving connectivity needs. other areas, such as offices, waiting rooms, and so forth, require only a few outlets. the tia-1179 standard defines 11 main categories of work areas and 75 subcategories and the recommended cabling densities required in each.

the high outlet and cable densities bring challenges to cable routing and management. With high outlet densities it also becomes important to clearly identify outlets by function through color coding, labeling, or other means.

Meeting the Challenges of High Cabling Densities

NetClear systems help you manage high-density needs from the equipment room to the work area outlet. From high-capacity Mighty Mo® racks and cabinets to reduced-diameter Berk-Tek cable, you will find more ways to save space, achieve better cable management, and route cables through crowded spaces.

In the work area, color-coded outlets enhance quick identification of ports by function making it easier for medical staff to make the right connections.

High-density patch panels simplify the deployment of high volumes of cables in the communications room. Cable management products ensure that cables are routed, supported, and connected efficiently to make administration of the cabling system easier, including ongoing moves, adds, and changes.

Multiuser telecommunication outlet assemblies (MUTOAs) are particularly useful for increasing outlet densities in upgrades and retrofits. Providing flexible layouts for spaces that are frequently rearranged, MUTOAs are easily located in open areas when “behind-the-wall” upgrades are impractical. MTUOAs are available with up to 24 outlets.
