Each Connection to a server needs a

license

One person may need many licenses

Network printers also

need a license

Server Connection License (SCON)All NetWare versions before 6.0 (5.1, 5.0, 4.1, etc.)

Per Server Concurrent Connection:the problem...

*Difficult for customer to plan & deploy

*Customers had to pay for multiple connections for the same person

*No easy way to count / audit licenses

* Required a different model for licensing agreements to ease complexity (Site / Node)

Comparison of License Consumption by Version

NetWare 5.x1 + 1 + 1 = 3 Licenses

NetWare 61 + 0 + 0 = 1 License

User Licensing Example

Five licenses are required for the five user objects that accesses the software service by the five different employees

Definition of Per User licensing

1 user = 1 user directory object

"User" means a user object in a single directory tree that has access or use rights to the software (or any portion)

User objects representing a person in a single directory tree, or linked across multiple directory trees (DirXML) count as only one User.

Each person who accesses or uses the Software must have at least one User Object uniquely assigned to that person

Upgrading NetWare

• SCON Licenses upgrade to User on a 1:1 basis– Example: a 50-connection license upgrades to a 50-user of NetWare 6– SCON customers may upgrade to a lower stratification if desired

– Example: A customer who has a 50-connection but only needs a 25-user can upgrade to the lower strat

– Customer forfeit additional licenses

• Upgrade Protection on 5.1 gave automatic upgrades to NetWare 6

– Upgraded at a 1:1 ratio in October 2001– CLA/MLA with SCON NetWare and Upgrade Protection or Maintenance

were automatically licensed for NW 6 and the User license model

• CLA Site and MLA Node upgrade to version 6, but stayed at Site / Node

– Site and Node part numbers still available ONLY for those customers who already had this option before NetWare 6 released (October 2001)

CLA Site / MLA Node license

• Discontinued October 2001 for new customers• CLA Site: Each computer needs a license, printers do not• MLA Node: All devices (including printers) need a license

Site / Node Conversions

• Existing Site / Node customers can convert to User licenses by submitting self audit and signing conversion worksheet / addendum

– Audit and worksheet submitted to Novell for approval prior to conversion

• Site / Node converts at 1:1 ratio

• Customer must be current on Site or Node first– If customer is short on Site or Node licenses needed to be compliant,

they must first by these licenses before converting– Worksheets found at http://www.novell.com/licensing

License Grants

• CLA and MLA customers who find they require more licenses when converting to User may obtain a license grant from Novell

– Example: A customer who has 1000 licenses, but would need 1400 User licenses (probably due to shift work) will be granted the 400 licenses at no charge from Novell

– Available to SCON, Site, and Node licenses

• When paying next Maintenance or Upgrade Protection fees, customer covers all new licenses

• Conversion is one-time grant– Customer must complete a self audit and sign conversion worksheet– Must be done prior to paying Upgrade Protection / Maintenance
