The nz leaders need to step up and make the right choises because THEY ARENT taking on the the our wonderfull landscap

So in 2022 how would you like to see NZ treasure our natural environment? #environmentalprotection

And yes they argue over nothing why can’t they all agree

can you give me one idea from science how we can help this happen?

Perhaps make all governmental decisions involve more of the public using technology?

There are lots of us as leaders in our country who are trying to make change but get little attention!

Why do we think this is? What needs to change, and how can this be accomplished?

change the structure of how we do things from the Western individual hierarchical way of thinking to a connected, community way of thinking.

Change is hard. Particularly large scale social change. There must be other ways to accomplish this.

But change is imperative so ways of bringing about change must be aspired to. Storytelling is a powerful tool for change.

Perhaps we need more storytelling that is compelling and visionary?

Scientists and science communicators are starting to recognize the value of stories - was discussed at last conference I went to

The stories we tell about the future engage our communities, and their actions lead to disruptive change in political system.

definitely! I use storytelling in my work &&; it definitely works. Story connects people on an emotional level - emotion brings about change.

Stories captivate people. Dry, technical scientific speak doesnt. We need to translate science so people understand and appreciate it

Yes! I’m an artist studying science - a new language &&; am having to create my own language to help me understand the science!

So, the question evolves to how can we get more relevant compelling stories into the media and our social consciousness?

How can we develop better storytelling skills in scientists, or those who communicate science - and provide channels to deliver the message?

Scientists can be criticised by other scientists for talking to the public about things that they are not experts on. How do we change this?

Everybody has a story - and we need to encourage the sharing of these. All stories are relevant. They are what connects us.

There needs to be broad recognition of the importance of communicating compelling science stories well. This allows them to be understood.

Why should we change this? An educated public can judge the arguments.

Perhaps we develop the communication skills of all scientists? Or do we make the publicising of science an alternate career pathway? #comms

In many ways, storytelling is a lost art. How can we change this, and embed more stories into our lives?

by allowing the stories to be told! Providing a platform for them and giving value to them as an important part of change.

I think the latter. Scientists focus on good quality science. Communicators tell compelling stories.

Do we need to teach storytelling skills as well?

There has been a strong focus on communication or lack of at this forum.

YES! I think that’s a good point too David. The assumption is that people know how to tell their stories but not always the case.

Does this create the momentum for investment in creative communications skills in the sciences?

Fear of criticism by their peers discourages many scientists from speaking out. If this happens there may be no argument to judge.

And again, movements have started to address this already, prior to the firm. How can we ensure that these succeed? What do we need? #comms

Scientists will always disagree, regardless of backlash. It’s a common personality trait for scientists! #comms

As the skill is developed, and the pool of communicators grows, science stories become commonplace in the media.

I like this idea! It should be a compulsory part of any science degree and pathway of study.

Yeah, but if you are a scientist talking about something that you are not the expert on, the *actual* expert can become quite annoyed!

much science is v narrow - maybe there is a role for more ’generalists’ in science to put smaller pieces into context?

Why would you want to speak about something that you’re not an expert on - I didn’t think scientists would do that?

What role would you see these ’generalists’ playing? Would they visit schools? Businesses? Government? #comms

They could act as intermediaries between the public and the specialists? Provide the media with quality science stories, educate the public

So if movement has started already, what are some of the things that have been happening?

Agree. Funding models mitigate against this as a generalist needs to move between projects easily.

As well, develop the ’second tier’ scientists - those interested and capable but like regular hours and salary.

So is this the role the Science Media Center currently fulfills? Do we need more of this? Or better funding of what we already have?

There is often only an hour or so to respond - often the right scientist is not available to talk or the media can’t find the right person. Well, this could allow the science media centre to have full time sic comm experts around the country. Wouldn’t that be great?

What marks these scientists as ’second tier’? As ’second class scientists’ what’s the appeal to pursue this career p

What alternative career paths would you like to see in 2022 to keep talented and motivated people in NZ?

Research assistant in new companies with spectrum of possible roles from research to business analysis

Story telling can also become old wives tales, nursery rhymes, or myths. All of which might contain some grains of fact shrouded in nonsense

Yes, they definitely have a role in pulling together multidisciplinary teams

So who pays their wages? Are they a civil servant? Are they industry funded? Do they lie off the DPB? #futurejobs

It’s not the storytelling I’m talking about - I mean the stories that we have to share today of our own lives. Stories connect.

I certainly agree with that

depends where they are - eg CRI employees, industry, or private consultants... not many jobs in this space now

I think science language will enter the mainstream and the "communicator" role diminishes. Stretch

But if science research continues to specialize and advance, the general Illicit may still not understand m
