Current Technical Concerns

December 2006

MODEL: D22

SUBJECT: Customer may complain of lack of power in 3rd and 4th gear with no DTC present

INFORMATION: This bulletin is for information and is intended to save dealers both time and money. This issue was first highlighted when a dealer contacted Nissan Ireland to requested assistance. They had been presented with a 2003 D22, which the customer claimed had a lack of power while driving. On initial inspection the dealer confirmed the customers concern and noted that the vehicle had no DTC’s present. DEALER DIAGNOISIS

• Fuel Filter • Fuel Pump • 4 Injectors

RESULT: Dealer replaced all components without resolving the concern = Incorrect diagnosis CORRECT DIAGNOSIS: PNP switch Having instructed the dealer to drive the vehicle with the consult connected and to view data monitor readings the fault became very apparent. While driving the vehicle in 1st, 2nd or 5th gears the Park neutral switch operated as normal, however while in 3rd and 4th gear the PNP switch did not operate, this resulted in the ECM restricting injection as it thought that the vehicle was in neutral. The PNP switch was replaced in this vehicle and the concern was resolved.

This concern highlights the importance of listening to the customers exact concern and also the importance of using the Data Monitor function on Consult.

Model: D40 Navara

Subject:

Improper operation of 4WD System, and correction of Component Location on ESM Pg TF21 (AT) and TF22 (MT)

The 4WD system may not operate correctly, and/or DTC P1814 “4WD DETECT SW” is recorded by Consult.

Investigation Results:

4Lo Posi switch internal contacts have been damaged due to overcurrent. This causes the contacts to remain on wether 4Lo/4H is selected or not. The resulting conflict in information sent to the Transfer Control Unit, which in turn prevents 4WD system operation (Wait Dection System is Active).

Interim Field Fix Action

Replace 4Lo Pos Switch P/N 32006-8S01A, investiagtion in to overcurrent problem is ongoing further details will be released when complete .

DO NOT REPLACE ANY OTHER SWITCH ON THE TRANSFER BOX.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE COMPONENT LOCATION ILLUSTRATION ON THE ESM IS INCORRECT, REFER TO THE CORRECTION BELOW TO CORRECTLY IDENTIFY THE SWITCH TO BE REPLACED FOR THIS CONCERN.

Interim Field Fix

Replace this Switch, this is the switch at the front of the transfer box, with a two pin connector containing one yellow wire and one black wire.

2. YD 25 Engine DMF update for D40 Navara and R51 Pathfinder.

Following on from our DMF check procedure in April 2006 edition, please find inserted the check procedure for YD 25 engine, the check procedure is the same, however the tolerance for YD 25 engine is more than the YD 22 engine. YD 22 DMF 22.6mm YD 25 DMF 32.0mm Please make all Technicians aware of this difference between these engines. Mick O Connor.

REFERENCE: EU-MREP-2006-01545 MODEL: D40/R51 SUBJECT: Difficult to hear outgoing phone call above 50mph

Details of Concern When the vehicle is travelling in excess of 50 mph the caller/receiver cannot hear the driver's voice clearly. There is an echo effect and background noise drowns out the driver's voice. Investigation Results & root causes When the vehicle is travelling in excess of 50 mph the caller/receiver cannot hear the driver's voice clearly. Root cause: Due to error of parameter for noise canceller inside the Navi (DVD) unit.

Conclusions C/M: Modified the parameter to fit actual usage. The hardware and software in the Navi control unit have been changed. Production C/M has been taken and the exchange scheme is also sending out reworked units with the latest level hardware/software. C/M Service Parts in NMPC-A and NMPC-B are not yet available. This MREP will be closed as final when service parts are also C/M level. Countermeasure details: Modified the parameter to fit actual usage. Corrective actions: Please change the incident unit to Remanufactured unit via the exchange scheme. Date: 30-Nov-2006 VIN: VSKJVWR51U0166139 Date: 30-Nov-2006 VIN: VSKCVND40U0165602

EU-MREP-2006-00345

REFERENCE: EU-MREP-2006-00345 MODEL: K12 C+C SUBJECT: Vehicle will not turn off / Dash lights remaining on / Other

electrical concerns!

Details of Concern: Various concerns may present on vehicle, for example 1) Doors not unlocking 2) Ignition lights remaining on 3) Vehicle will not turn off even with the key removed from the ignition etc. etc.

Investigation Results & root causes

Investigation highlighted that when an alarm is not fitted, the alarm harness block connector B70 lies on the trunk floor as there was no requirement or process for the harness to be fastened back and secured. On the incident vehicle water was evident on the trunk floor. The harness subsequently made contact with this water resulting in short circuits and corrosion.

Repair: Dealer tied up block connector B70 and cleaned all terminals. OK result.

MODEL: N16

SUBJECT: Customer may complain of front brakes binding or brake pad wear

INFORMATION: We have been contacted by a number of customers and dealers on this particular issue. It appears that vehicles are being presented to dealers with the right hand front wheel binding. RESULT : Dealers in many cases have been misdiagnoising this concern and have been replacing the brake calliper. This has resulted in unnecessary warranty costs and unnecessary cost to customers whose vehicles are outside manufactures warranty. CORRECT DIAGNOSIS : It appears that the brake pads are corroding and are therefore becoming stuck in the brake carrier. This is resulting in the pads not fully realising and wearing out prematurely, and in extreme cases has caused the pads to bind. ACTION : It is absolutely imperative that all dealers inspect brake pads during routine service and apply grease were necessary. This will prevent all future concerns and obviously increase customer satisfaction.

MODEL: P12 SUBJECT: RADIO VOLUME CHANGES WHEN STEERING WHEEL TURNING

Details of Concern Field Fix for vehicles with Nissan engine and RAS and Cruise control seems to be

wrong. Some wire colours and terminal locations do not conform the rework instructions.

Investigation Results & root causes The harness supplier had changed some wire colours and terminal locations

during the production of the part. This change causes the confusion in case of the harness rework.

Conclusions Changing the N-form switch panel with a new one instead of reworking the

harness solves the concern as the internal logic and sensitivity of the part have been changed. Please ask dealers to stop reworking harnesses and replace the N-form switch panel instead. C/M parts can be ordered normally via EURO-FAST and are available at NMPC.

Field Fix Procedure

ALMERA (N16), ALMERA TINO (V10), X-TRAIL (T30), PRIMERA (P12), PATHFINDER (R51), NAVARA (D40) WITH YD DIESEL ENGINE AND DENSO HP3 FIP

Subject: Exchange of Suction Control Valve (SCV) on HP3 Diesel Injection Pump Apply this Field Fix Procedure in case you can confirm a customers complaint about hesitation and/or lack of performance while accelerating and you are sure the root cause is a faulty SCV. To confirm this, proceed as follows:

1. With engine warm and Consult connected do a test drive. 2. During driving watch these items on Consult:

a) PUMP CURRENT (mA) b) ACT CR PRESS (MPa)

3. During acceleration, item a) should decrease, while item b) should increase. 4. If the customer’s complaint occurs (engine hesitation when accelerating) and at the same

time you notice that both items decrease, it’s very likely that the SCV is not working properly.

5. To double-check, disconnect the SCV from the wiring harness and do another test drive. If this time the vehicle accelerates normally you can be sure that the SCV is faulty and proceed to replace it as described below.

NOTE: The following procedure describes the SCV replacement on different models with different mounting locations of the FIP, therefore it’s mentioned for each step for which model it is applicable. Step 1 (T30 only)

• Remove wiper arms (1) and plastic cover (2).

Figure 1

Field Fix Procedure

Step 2 (T30 only) • Remove wiper motor and linkage.

Figure 2

Step 3 (T30 only) • Remove front metal cover to gain

better access to the Diesel pump. • Air-blow and remove dust from the

engine, especially from the surrounding area of the FIP and the FIP itself.

Figure 3

Step 4 (all models) • Disconnect wiring harness from SCV

(1) • Take note of the connector’s

orientation. The new valve will have to be fitted in the same way as the old one.

• Clean the pump with brake cleaner around SCV contact surface, remove two bolts on both sides of the SCV and take off the valve.

NOTE: The large O-ring stays inside. Do not pull the valve with twisting or try prying it out with any tool. Carefully pull the valve straight up.

Figure 4

1

Field Fix Procedure

Step 5 (all models) • Remove the O-ring (1).

NOTE: Do not use any tool to remove the O-ring. NOTE: Do not allow any foreign substances to enter the FIP.

Figure 5

Step 6 (all models) • Figure 6 shows the new SCV kit:

• (1) SCV with small O-ring (1a) fitted • (2) New bolts (2x) • (3) O-ring, large

Figure 6

Step 7 (all models) • Ensure that the groove of the pump

side housing is contamination free, then place the large new O-ring (1) into the groove.

NOTE: First apply clean engine oil to the O-ring, then fit it to the groove. Otherwise the O-ring may fall off.

Figure 7

Field Fix Procedure

Step 8 (all models) • Apply clean engine oil around the

small O-ring (1) on the new SCV for sealing.

NOTE: Make sure the SCV is clean and no debris sticks to the O-ring. Any contamination or damage to the O-ring will cause the FIP not to work properly.

Figure 8

Step 9 (all models) • Insert the new SCV by hand until you

feel a click. Make sure the connector faces into the same direction as before the removal.

NOTE: Do not try to twist the SCV in, just push it in straight.

Figure 9

Step 10 (all models) • Tighten the two bolts by hand with an

even torque as a temporary action. • Use a torque wrench to tighten the

two bolts completely with the correct torque of 6.9 - 10.8 Nm.

Figure 10

Field Fix Procedure

Step 11 (all models) • Connect the SCV to the wiring harness. • Clean the SCV fitting area with a degreasing spray. • Before starting the engine connect Consult and carry out “Fuel Pump Learning Value

Clearing”. • Start the engine and ensure that there is no fuel leak around the SCV.

Step 12 (T30 only) Reassemble all parts which have been removed in steps 1 – 3:

• front metal cover, • wiper motor and linkage, • wiper arms and plastic cover.

Step 13 (all models)

• Delete stored DTC’s and carry out “Fuel Pump Learn Clear”. • Carry out another test drive with Consult connected to confirm the customer’s complaint

is solved.

MODEL: Y61 & R20 SUBJECT: ZD30 Engine OPS2 failure after production C/M INFORMATION: The customer noticed that the oil warning lamp did not turn off after engine start. Vehicle produced after production counter-measure and was therefore not affected by Campaign. The dealer confirmed that the vehicles oil pressure was good. Countermeasure details: On customer complaint base only a CM resistor and a new OPS2 switch should be fitted to the incident vehicles. Resistor Part Number 24336-VC30B The CM resistor can be used on vehicles produced post 29-July-2004 only! VIN must be above: JN1KESY61U0140115 JN1TESY61U0140659 R20 Because of the fact that no incidents on R20 were reported and the fact that the vehicle will be out of production very soon, no CM was introduced in production line or field fix parts will be established. If such an incident can be confirmed in future, the OPS2 kit should be replaced only. The resistor is not for use on R20 See attachment for resistor mounting position.
