Web site for collecting, sharing, mapping, and reporting green practices or low impact developments in neighborhoods across the Great Lakes

Unique concept of clustering online social networking, collaborative effort, and individual competitive rivalry, to increase adoption of green practices

Project Goals1. Increase effectiveness of existing environmental groups and orgs.2. Motivate individuals to adopt environmentally beneficial behaviors3. Manage stormwater runoff through the adoption of green practices4. Improve the health of the Great Lakes by reducing sediment and

nutrients entering rivers and streams

Green Practices

Page 5: Networked Neighborhoods For Eco-Conservation Online (NECO)

Effects of Sediment and Nutrients from unmanaged stormwater runoff

Excess nutrients cause overgrowth of algae

Army Corps of Engineers dredges:-4 million cubic yards of sediment-400,000 truck loads-$20 million annually

Uses of NECO

Empowers local grass roots organizations to inventory, share, and summarize the benefits of their efforts visually and numerically2

345

Produces a scalable framework to build new or expanded applicationsFirst time opportunity to start at time zero, and provide a way to measure change

- Number of practices- Total water managed- Nutrient reductions- Sediment reductions

Provides a platform for individuals and companies to showcase green practices

1 Utilizes practical low impact practices that homeowners, businesses, and communities can use to address stormwater runoff
