- 1. Networking: Computer Connections By Jarom Evans
2. What is a computer network?
- A computer network is a network made up of two or more computers that are connected through cable or wireless devices. There are several examples of computer network.
3. Local Area Networks
- Also known as LAN is a computer network that covers a small area like a home, office or small groups in a building.
- It can be connected to several computers and other computer devices like a printer.
- It can link together using network cables or wireless routers.
4. Wide Area Networks
- Similar to LAN, WAN can cover wider areas like a metropolitan area, regional or a global scale. It can span between buildings, cities and countries.
- Examples of WAN is telephones and the internet.
- It can link together through telephone lines.
5. Wireless Networks
- Wireless networks are any type of network that is wireless.
- An examples of wireless networks are mobile phones and Wi-Fi.
- It uses electromagnetic waves like radio waves to send data and to link together.
6. Peer to Peer, Client/Server Networks
- Peer to Peer (P2P) term used a lot in file sharing systems like Napster or BitTorrent.
- Client/Server Network is one computer (the client) makes a request or joins to another computer which is the server.
- Examples of this is file sharing (downloads) and gaming LAN or online.
7. Protocols used on the Internet
- Protocols are rules which is used by computers to communicate (transmit data) with another within a network.
- HTML Hypertext Markup Language is used for making web pages.
- HTTP Hypertext Transfer Protocol used to transfer requests and information between servers and browsers.
- TCP/IP Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol is a set of rules used to get data from one network device to another.
- FTP File Transfer Protocol is a network protocol used to exchange and manipulate over an IP computer network.
8.
- Equipment used for a computer network.
- Modem MOdulate and DEModulate used to connect computers to telephone lines.
- Router used to route information which is directed to various paths.
- Hub/Switch Both devices connect network segments.
- NIC Network Interface Card allows computers to be able to connect to a network.
Networking Hardware 9. Data Transmission Rates
- Bps Bits per second is the rate which data is transferred.
- kbps Kilo bits per second or 1 000 Bits per second is a rate which data is transferred.
