2. IntroductionEducators are accepting and using technologyinto their classrooms. But what many of usdont realize how we get this technology andhow it works. Also, many teachers are notusing the network and hardware to their fulladvantage in the classroom. This lesson will benefit any K-12 teacherand/or administrator. It will discussvocabulary and how a network works, aswell as discuss how the network works. 3. Objectives Learners will gain an understanding of howcomputer Networks work by looking at thevocabulary. Learners will understand what hardwaresare available to them. Learners will demonstrate what they learnedabout networks by developing their owndefinition and picture of the new vocabulary. Learners will demonstrate understanding ofhardware by creating a visual representationof the school districts network. 4. StandardsISTE Nets for Teachers1. Facilitate and Inspire StudentLearning and CreativityTeachers use their knowledge of subjectmatter, teaching and learning, andtechnology to facilitate experiencesthat advance studentlearning, creativity, and innovation inboth face-to-face and virtualenvironments.2. Design and Develop Digital AgeLearning Experiences andAssessmentsTeachers design, develop, and evaluateauthentic learning experiences andassessment incorporatingcontemporary tools and resources tomaximize content learning in contextand to develop theknowledge, skills, and attitudesidentified in the NETSS.ISTE Nets for Students1. Creativity and InnovationStudents demonstrate creativethinking, construct knowledge, anddevelop innovation.2. Communication andCollaborationStudents use digital media andenvironments to communicate andwork collaboratively, includingat a distance, to support individuallearning and contribute to thelearning of others.6. Technology Operations andConceptsStudents demonstrate a soundunderstandingof technologyconcepts, systems, and operations.(International Society for Technology in Education) 5. Relative AdvantageChallenge Technology Relative Advantage Expected OutcomeEducators lackunderstandingof how NetworksworkLANWANInternetIntranetWith a better understandingof how the network works, teachers and administratorscan more efficiently integratetechnology into thecurriculumTeachers andAdministrators will usethe network toolsavailable in their dailylessons. They will alsoallow students the use ofnetwork toolsEducators arehaving difficultyintegrating themultiplehardwares intodaily lessonsComputersPrinterScannerEducators will be able to usemany more resources whenthey have a fullunderstanding of thehardware available to them.Teachers will be able toenrich their lessons bythe use of availablehardware.Educators arehaving difficultyintegratingnetwork andhardware intoassignments forstudentsComputersPrinterScannerLANWANInternetIntranetWhen teachers model thenetworks and hardware, themore students will learn howto use them. Also creatingassignments that allowstudents to use the networkand hardwares.Students will gain theknowledge of thenetworks and hardwaresare. Also they will learnhow to use them invarious ways. 6. Lesson DetailsTimeline: about 2-2.5 hoursMaterials: slideshow, computers hooked up to thenetwork, printer, scannerGrouping Strategies: Educators will work in pairson the Vocabulary review. They will then work withother same content teachers to create a network diagrameither by hand or using the computer. It should be avisual representation of the network. 7. Learning Activities1. The instructor will welcome everyone.2. The instructor will discuss the Network vocabulary inthe next slide and show the picture in the following slidefor the visual learners.3. The instructor will discuss the Hardware vocabulary.4. The instructor will then have the learners divide intopairs to work on developing their own definitions andmake/find pictures to match the definition.5. The instructor will then have the learners create asystem diagram which visually shows a network. 8. Adaptations Copies of the slide show will be available forthose students who need a copy. Learners will receive an electronic and/orpaper copy of the Vocabulary. Learners cancomplete the assignment by hand orelectronically. Computers will be available to help createthe diagrams 9. VocabularyLAN: (Local Area Network) "a network in which all clients share a commoninfrastructure (wires) and are usually in the same building, or group ofbuildings." (Consortium, 2005)WAN: (Wide Area Network) "a networks that spans over a larger area."(Consortium, 2005)Internet: "a network made up of several interconnected networks" (Consortium,2005)Intranet: "large groups of networks that are connected with an organization."(Consortium, 2005)Router: "a device that connects a network to another network(s)." (Consortium,2005)Computer:"an electronic device that is designed to accept data, performprescribed mathematical and logical operations at high speed, and display theresults of these operations." (dictionary.com)Printer: "an output device that produces a paper copy of alphabetical or graphicdata." (dictionary.com)Scanner: makes a digital copy of a picture or document 10. Computer NetworksWhen a school district sets out to create a network, they will startwith a LAN at the individual schools that will be connected tothe WAN for the district. Each LAN will have a hub that willconnect to the routers. When the computers and printers arehooked up to the LAN, teachers are capable to accessresources used district-wide using the Intranet. Oncecomputers are hooked up to the network, a printer that isconnected to the network can be installed, as well as any otherhardware the district allows. So, to recap:Locally, each school is connected to the LAN which is thenconnected to the WAN. Once all connections are complete, the computers can connect to the network and access inschool information via the Intranet or they can access theInternet. 11.
