FVG Select, the new event by Victam International BV,

took place from June 13-14, 2017 at KoelnMesse

exhibition center East. The focus of FVG Select was

networking, business match-making and gathering new

industry knowledge. This makes FVG Select very

different from the large exhibitions VICTAM International

and VICTAM Asia and a valuable addition to the Victam

Portfolio.

The core of FVG Select was an extensive conference

and business matchmaking program attended by 40%of all attendees. The conferences were organized in

collaboration with our partners AEBIOM, Aquafeed.com,

IFF & Wageningen University, Perendale Publishers Ltd.

and WATT Global Media. The Industry Expo only allowed

for a limited number of companies (55) to present

themselves (versus the 250-350 exhibitors attending

VICTAM Asia or VICTAM International).

Two new features were introduced during FVG Select:

the business matchmaking program and the VICTAM

News Room. The business matchmaking program added

around 15% extra meetings to everyone’s schedule. It

was a combination of an online tool and personal support

by the Victam matchmaking consultants.

The platform was visited 3.208 times, collecting 5.276profile views. It allowed exhibitors and visitors to plan

their appointments prior to the event in a very efficient

way which resulted in over 80% of all the meetings

being rated as highly satisfied.

The other new feature was the VICTAM News Room.

Speakers, visitors and exhibitors were interviewed about

their expertise. The news crew also made running reports

about the events through Victam’s social media channels

resulting in >1.500 views. To catch an impression of the

event and watch all the interviews you can go to our

Victam International channel on YouTube.

The profile of the 55 exhibitors in the industry expo was

very diverse. They represented 17 different countries,

70% are based in Europe and 30% in the rest of the

world. 57% of the exhibitors stated that they would

participate in the next edition of FVG Select. You can

view the exhibitor list on page 8.

The event was attended by 926 unique attendees from

56 different countries, paying 1.227 visits over 2 days.

This was far above the expected 750 attendees and

1.000 visits (their geographical breakdown is shown on

the map below). 78% of the visitors were decision

makers or influencers in the purchasing process. 21,9%of the visitors came from (among others) the animal feed

industry, 18,9% from the pet food industry and 10,5%from the aqua feed industry. The main reason for visiting

this event was networking, visiting specific companies,

staying in touch with suppliers and meeting new

suppliers. 68% of the visitors stated that they would

attend the next edition of FVG Select.

Petfood Forum Asia 2018:Innovation for dynamic pet food marketsPet food industry expertswill address the latestresearch and key topics forthese fast-growing pet foodmarkets.

Most pet food markets in Asia are growingby double digits annually, thanks to overalleconomic and income growth and theincreasing numbers of pet owners feedingcommercial, packaged pet food.Professionals in these markets can learninformation and tips for taking advantageof this growth during Petfood Forum Asia2018, scheduled for 28 March.Co-located again with VICTAM Asia 2018

at the Bangkok International Trade andExhibition Centre, Petfood Forum Asia willfeature industry experts addressing how tobuild an online community to better marketand sell pet food via ecommerce, plusproviding information on novel andfunctional pet food ingredients, pet foodprocessing innovations and savings, andother key topics.

Fast-growing pet food marketsOverall, the Asia-Pacific region is growingabout 6 percent a year in pet care sales (allpet products), according to EuromonitorInternational. Japan is by far the largestmarket in the region, accounting for morethan half of Asia’s US$9.8 million dollars inpet care sales.Yet Japan is experiencing no growth,

while other Asia-Pacific markets are risingby double digits, particularly in pet foodsales. China, for example, has reachedabout US$1.5 billion, according to GfK,and is experiencing at least 14 percentgrowth annually. Online pet food sales inChina are especially robust, growing over40 percent a year.Though other markets in Asia are small

(less than US$1 billion annually in pet caresales), they are seeing annual growthranging from 10 percent in the Philippinesto more than 26 percent in India. Alsoregistering double-digit sales increases areThailand (13.7 percent) and Indonesia (14percent), with Hong Kong, South Korea,

Taiwan and Malaysia following and enjoyingstill healthy growth rates of 8.8, 7.6, 7.6and 6.2 percent, respectively. If you isolate pet food sales, the growth is

often even more robust. For example,Euromonitor projects that economy-priceddry pet food in Korea will grow at 15percent or more annually through 2022.And as in China, ecommerce is a strongretail channel in Korea, accounting for 30percent of pet food sales, second only togrocery stores at 35 percent.

Aqauafeed Horizons Asia 2018:Opportunities and challengesabound in aquafeed sector

Aquaculture continues to establish itself asby far the fastest growing feed sector. Aswith all feed industries, it is the cornerstoneof livestock production – in this case, aquatic livestock. While the aquafeedindustry’s expertise helps drive aquaculturegrowth, the growth of aquaculture is in turndriving the development of aquafeeds. Thelure of this fast expanding market and theopportunity to sell feed at many timeshigher prices than feed for pigs, chicken orruminants draws many to consider thesector, however, the complexities shouldnot be underestimated.Aquaculture is comprised of established

species, such as carps, salmon, shrimpand tilapia, catfish, seabass and bream, where the nutrient requirements andfeeding habits are relatively wellunderstood. Then there is a following waveof emerging species, such as cobia, tunaand grouper, where the development ofoptimal feeds is still ongoing – and literallyhundreds more species that we are onlyjust beginning to understand. A case inpoint is cleaner fish feed: Lumpfish(Cyclopterus lumpus) and ballan wrasse(Labrus bergylta Ascanius, 1767) are thenew biological weapons against sea licethat are the plague of salmon cages. Evenwith the more establish species, definingthe nutrient requirements of early lifestageand broodstock animals is a challenge.

Trends and influencesAquafeed, in common with the rest of thefeed industry, is subject to the requirementto produce sustainable and environmentallysound feeds. Carbon footprint, waterusage, emissions and all the otherconsiderations all too familiar sounding toanyone involved with feed are important, along with factors unique to aquaculture, such as non-water polluting pellets. Butwhat we see driving development most isthe replacement of fishmeal and oil withalternatives. Of course, for most species, fish is the ideal and most natural food, soreplacement raises many challenges for

these sensitive animals in terms ofdigestibility and nutrition, as well as fleshquality. While some companies aspire toreplace fishmeal completely, or to utilizefish by-catch and by-products instead ofcaught fish, others have focused onimproving the Fish In Fish Out (FIFO) ratio. The trend is seen in companies of all sizes

but the research capabilities of the biggestcompanies allow for some of the mostinteresting developments. BioMar Group, for example now boasts a FIFO ratio ofbelow 1, in alignment with UN SustainableDevelopment Goals. BioMar has over

several years aimed to take the lead inresearching alternative materials for fish oiland fishmeal including plant proteins andmarine ingredients like micro algae. Newalternative raw materials as well as highprices of fish oil and fishmeal in 2016 madeit possible to formulate price competitive, high performance feed with a low FIFOratioThe company has also partnered withAker BioMarine in the sustainable harvest-ing of krill from the lower trophic levels. The move away from fishmeal is not

confined to Europe and Scandinavia:Thailand’s agrifood giant CharoenPokphand Foods PLC (CPF) announced itis moving forward in collaboration withvarious organizations to reduce the fishmealratio in aquaculture feed production to nomore than 5%. The company has shiftedproduction from black tiger shrimp(P.Monodon) to White Leg shrimp(P.Vannamei), which has a lower protein

Above: The cleaner fish (Ballan Wrasseand Lumpfish/Lumpsuckers) are beingproduced in some 30 facilities in Norwayand beyond and are working eating lice inthe salmon cages very effectively. In 2016Norway alone needed approximately50,000,000 cleaner fish.

requirement, allowing the fishmealportion in shrimp feed production to fall from35% in the past 20 years to 7% at present.CPF generally sources its fishmeal for thecompany’s shrimp farms from by-productsof processing plants like surimi, cannedtuna and fish ball plants; and by-catch,which is subjected to the sustainability andtraceability rules under the InternationalFishmeal and Fish Oil Organization’sResponsible Supply Chain of Custody (IFFORS COC) which are certified by the IFFO.Researchers at Nutreco’s aquafeed

division, Skretting Aquaculture ResearchCentre, have been actively investigatingalternative raw materials for many years.N3, a salmonid diet that utilizes a newmarine algae oil, was recently launched andwill be available globally in 2019. Jointlyproduced by DSM and Evonik, the naturalalgae oil incorporated in N3 contains highlevels of EPA and DHA.

New targeted feedsThere has been a slew of new feedproducts during the summer. Skretting’sN3 launch comes hot on the heels of itsPrime and Express, a duo of salmon feedsdesigned for faster and more efficientdigestive break down and processing. Thetwo distinct products are tailored to thephysiological requirements of the fish atdifferent life stages. Prime prepares the fish, building a solid foundation to support fast,high-quality growth. Express builds on theframework created by Prime, maximizingthe speed of growth by enabling the fish tofully utilize the potential in the feed. Thismeans that the feed can go through thedigestive process much faster. Good growth in the first phase in

seawater should support the recruitment ofnew muscle fibres and a healthy bonedeposition. In the later seawater phase thatleads to harvest, growth occurs primarily byenlargement of the existing muscle fibresand by deposition of fat. Growth at this final

stage is only as good as the foundationlaid down in the first phase. Grower feedstypically contain high levels of fat. Salmonwill digest and absorb this fat and depositit in the fillet. However, processing a high-fat feed can be challenging to the fish’sdigestive system. Express is designed toenable salmon to take up the fat from thefeed more proficiently. Validation trialsconducted with Express showed that itsignificantly reduced the accumulation offat in the intestinal cells, suggesting a farmore effective absorption of fat.

Specialized RAS feedEWOS has produced a feed specifically forthe increasing number of land-basedrecirculating aquaculture systems. The newholistic salmon feed has been developedspecifically to deliver optimum RASoperational results through targeted feeddesign and optimal fish performance.Rearing salmonids in RAS facilities is a

high technology business. EWOS identifiedthe needs for a specialized feed to meetthe challenges of suspended solidsremoval and disposal, fecal stability, andtotal ammonia nitrogen (TAN) build up inthe water. The EWOS CLEAR product isbased on a model that combines RASengineering, nutrient mass balance andbioenergetics and thus takes a holisticapproach. The focus on designing the feedwas threefold: macronutrient balance(digestible protein and digestible energy);digestibility of the raw materials andphysical quality of the feed. Initialdevelopment started with trials measuringa wide range of relevant parametersincluding feed digestibility, fecal stability

and fish health (histological appearance ofgastro intestinal tracts). Field trials weresubsequently held at one of the largestcommercial RAS facilities in Norway toconfirm freshwater feed that meets theneeds of the fish and also the requirementsof the RAS operations. EWOS claims thefeed allows for more fish to be producedwithin the same facilities, thus makingbetter use of the RAS.

Feed for healthAller Aqua Norway has carried outpromising trials with rainbow trout usingtheir new Aller Active feed, which hasadded organic minerals to strengthenoverall fish health. The trial, focused on thefeed’s impact on skin and mucus layer, aswell as the overall health and quality of thefish. The fish and a control group were fedAller Active and another Aller Aqua feed, respectively. The trials showed that the fishresistance to disease and lice, as well asmucus layer, increased significantly whenfed the new feed. It aids in better utilizationof nutrients, proteins, minerals, and oilsand the fish mucus layer is thickened. At Aquafeed Horizons Asia 2018, to be

held once again in association with VictamInternational, the utilization of fishmealreplacements and their impacts onprocessing and feed formulation along withother advances will be an important focus. The 11th in Aquafeed.com’s internationaltechnical conference series will take placeMarch 27, 2018, the first day of VICTAMAsia 2018, at the BITEC Bangkok. More information can be found at

http:/feedconferences.com andregistration will be available in January.

The nutrient requirement of many catfishbroodstock, such as these freshwaterbutter fish, Ompok pabda, popular inSouth Asia, are still poorly understood.

Marine Harvest ASA is one of the largest seafood companies in the world, and the world’slargest producer of Atlantic salmon with a harvest of 381,000 tonnes of fish in 2016. It isnow building its own feedmills. The Marine Harvest feed plant on the Bjugn peninsula inNorway is producing salmon feed with 10% of fish meal inclusion.

Practical information Bangkok is the political, economic, cultural, culinary, and spiritual capital of Thailand, andfeatures both old-world charm and modern convenience.

Visitors who travel to Bangkok can beoverwhelmed by the sheer size of the cityand the vast number of attractions Bangkokhas to offer. Indeed there is a wide variety ofBangkok sightseeing opportunitiesspanning more than two centuries of rapiddevelopment following the city’s founding in1782 by King Rama I, the first king of thepresent Chakri dynasty. Since that auspicious date, Bangkok has

swelled to a cosmopolitan, 21st century cityof more than ten million inhabitants. Whilstthe immensity of the city and its bustlingstreets can be intimidating at first, thosewho spend some time in Bangkok arequickly enamoured by the myriad ofattractions it contains, from exotic temples, which underscore Thailand’s strongBuddhist history, to modern shopping malls. Try to visit Thailand’s Grand Palace,

arguably the premier Bangkok sightseeing

attraction. Situated in the heart ofBangkok’s Rattanakosin Island, thegleaming spires of the Grand Palace areconveniently located nearby Bangkok’smost spectacular temples, including theTemple of the Emerald Buddha (Wat PhraKaeo), the Temple of Dawn (Wat Arun), andWat Pho. These iconic destinations are topattractions to all visitors who travel toBangkok looking to appreciate Thailand’sunique cultural traditions. When you travel around Bangkok, a cruise

on the Chao Phraya, a visit to a floatingmarket, or an exploration of the cities ‘backalley’ canals (khlongs) are themselvesunique attractions. Other historical andcultural Bangkok sightseeing ‘must sees’include the National Museum, VimanmekMansion, and Suan Pakkad Palace, all ofwhich either house fine art or are nationaltreasures in their own right.

Key tips• Beware of scams involving tuk tuks, gemshops, and tailors, particularly aroundpopular tourist attractions. Remember, there is no such thing as a free ride. It’sbetter to flag down taxis that are alreadydriving (the red light means empty); thesewill generally use the meter while parkedtaxis typically ask for higher fixed fares orwill take you for the proverbial ‘ride’.• Be aware of the possibility of credit cardfraud. Don’t lose sight of your card duringtransactions. • Be on your guard against pickpocketsand bag snatchers. Foreign visitors havehad items snatched by thieves onmotorbikes when walking along busystreets or travelling in open transport liketuk tuks.• If you travel by bus, make sure cash andvaluables you have are kept securely. Antibiotic-free animal feed Fifty-seven percent of respondents report more than half of their company’s production is antibiotic free. By Jackie Roembke, editor of Feed Management and Feed International.

The 2017 WATT Nutrition & FeedSurvey reveals growing trend forantibiotic-free animal feed production. Find out how the animal feed industry

is using additives to replace antibioticgrowth promoters.

Driven by globalization, regulation, socialresponsibility and consumer demand, whatwas once perhaps characterized as aregional issue – the move to reduce anti-biotics from livestock production – continuesto gain traction around the world. The shifthas left many animal feed producers andformulators looking for feed additive solutionsas the key to developing effective antibioticreplacement and elimination strategies, report respondents to WATT GlobalMedia’s 2017 Nutrition & Feed survey. The annual survey was conducted in early

2017 and includes the feedback of 364participants from around the world:• Latin America, 32 percent• United States/Canada, 18 percent• Asia/Pacific, 17 percent• Europe, 15 percent• Africa, 14 percent• Middle East, 4 percentMore than half of participants were

nutritionists, consultants and veterinarians, with the remaining portion of respondeescomprised of operators, marketers andadministrators.

Animal feed profitability outlook, challengesFor seven years, survey respondents havebeen asked to gauge the market and offertheir feelings about prospective profitabilityfor the year ahead. In 2017, 38 percent ofparticipants cite negative or deterioratingprofits. In contrast, 40 percent of 2016respondents reported improving profitability;this year, the number hovered around 31 percent.Taking a closer to look to identify what

may have spurred this trend, 80 percent ofrespondents strongly feel the cost of grainand/or exchange rate fluctuations was thetop challenge facing their business.Sixty-seven percent fear the effect of

mycotoxins and other anti-nutritionalfactors on their 2017 profitability. Fifty-eightpercent identified tight or deterioratingmargins as their next major concern.High energy costs related to feed transport

and feed mill operations (57 percent) andthe cost of feed additives (56 percent) werealso noted as major concerns.

Most survey respondents cited increasingrestrictions on antibiotic use as being thegreatest challenge to their feedingprograms. WATT Global Media

Antibiotic-free production surgesA sizable group of respondents feel theelimination of antibiotics due to regulationor consumer pressure (84 percent) willpose varying degrees of difficulty in 2017.Thirty-five percent of respondents areconcerned about how – and if – they will beable to over-come the production lossesafter removing antibiotic growth promoters(AGPs).

Regarding rising costs, 42 percent ofrespondents feel antibiotic-free productionwill be the single greatest challenge to theirfeeding program. Slow-growing broilers(27 percent) and cage-free egg production(22 percent) also will cause problems, notesurvey participants.

In 2017, 43 percent of survey respondentsreport 99 to 50 percent of their productionas antibiotic free; in contrast, only 26percent of 2016 respondents cited such.Perhaps related to this surge, only 11percent of 2017 respondents report thatnone of their production was antibiotic free;in 2016, 20 percent did. WATT Global Media

In the 2017 survey, respondents were less optimistic about their company’s profitabilitycompared with their 2016 outlook. However, an increasing amount feel like it’s businessas usual. WATT Global Media

free feed production is somewherebetween 99 and 50 percent. Comparedwith 2016, only 23 percent reportedproduction in this range. Also of interest, in 2016, 20 percent of

respondees said none of their productionwas antibiotic free; in 2017, this numberdropped to 11 percent.

Given the consumer and regulatory climate,70 percent of respondents report theircompany is actively exploring, testing orusing antibiotic replacement feed additives.WATT Global Media

When asked what best reflects theircompany’s nutritional and marketing stancerelated to antibiotic use, 59 percent ofparticipants cite “prudent or judicious use,”37 percent say “antibiotic free” and 16percent tout “no antibiotics ever.”Seventy percent of respondents report

that their company is actively exploring, testing or using feed additives as antibioticreplacements or alternatives. But the moveposes some unique challenges.Forty-four percent of respondents report

that, even if they find suitable feedformulation solutions, the adoption ofproper on-farm management techniques tosupport animal health will be difficult toimplement. They also are concerned aboutthe additional feed additives costs (41percent) and feel they need access to moreresearch and education (37 percent).

Efficacy of feed additives for AGPreplacementOnce the line of questioning became morespecific, 20 percent of participants optedout because they did not have in-depthknowledge of their company’s feedformulations. The remaining 80 percentdelved into the feed additives they have

Survey participants cite the stress of high feed additive costs as being the greatestchallenge to their feed formulation program. However, beyond the feed, respondents fearimplementation of a holistic on-farm management program will pose the greatestchallenge. WATT Global Media

Organic acids, enzymes and probiotics ranked as the most popular feed additives used forAGP replacement. WATT Global Media

Most respondents report having experienced the best results from probiotics (50 percent)and organic acids (49 percent). Availability and experience may sway these numbers. That’s not to say respondentsknew about or had used the otheradditives types. For example, respondentscited they knew the least about theefficacy of phytogenic feed additives(20 percent) and prebiotics (17 percent).

Additive combinations offersolutionsForty-four percent of survey participantsreport using feed additive combinations toachieve the desired results in their AGPreplacement strategy.According to 30 percent of respondents,

the combination of organic acids andphytogenic feed additives produced thebest synergistic effects. Next, 26 percentreport finding positive effects combiningmedium-chain fatty acids and organic acids.

The use of anticoccidial drugs will largely remain the same (60 percent) while the use ofsub-therapeutic antibiotics decreased or were eliminated completely. Across the board, feed additives used to promote animal health will increase in 2017. WATT Global Media

Victam Foundation announces new board members

Recently I received the sad news, that at the age of 83, Hansvan Vliet had passed away. In the late sixties Hans joined, onbehalf of CPM, the Victam Technical Advisory Board (TAC). Hisgreat knowledge of feed technology was invaluable as was theuseful advice regarding the future and profile of Victamexhibitions. Hans enthusiastically supported the variousconferences that Victam arranged/organized and was alwayson hand to give sound advice regarding the conferenceprogrammes, their subjects and speakers; many of the lattercoming from the extensive network of industry executives thatHans compiled over the years from within the feed industry andthe animal feed institutes worldwide. In 1998 Hans joined the Board of Victam International and only

a year later he became President of the Board and in fact wasthe first President not to come from the feed industry, but froma supplier. Hans was one of the best presidents Victam everhad, he was an excellent chairman at the board meetings, wasdiplomatic, sincere, loyal and a great representative of Victam

at many international events. He was a learned person withgreat interest in culture, thearts and politics. I will alwaysremember him as a friend towhom you could turn to forhelp and advice, as well asbeing a gentleman. He retiredon 1st of July 2002. Untilrecently Hans attended our annual board meetings and he alsovisited our shows in Cologne.

Hans leaves behind his wife Joan, two children and fourgrandchildren. Victam International and the Victam Foundationhave lost a great and inspiring friend.

SRUC (Scotland’s Rural College) is awidely respected higher education institutededicated to producing specialist research, delivering high quality education andproviding comprehensive consultancyservices in the rural sector within the UKand beyond. SRUC’s Monogastric Science Research

Centre (led by Prof. Jos Houdijk) is a focusfor the College’s work on pigs and poultry,in particular bringing together vital researchon nutrition. The most appropriate way of assessing

the nutritional value of feedstuffs, orinterventions affecting the nutritional value,is by feeding either known quantities offeed or digestibility-marker enriched feedto birds or growing pigs.

The gold standard equipment used forsuch assessment of nutritional value is theraised-floor cage, where samples can becollected in the absence of interferencefrom bedding intake.Traditional raised-floor cages no longer

meet UK Home Office requirements. Therefore, SRUC set out to refurbish thisfacility accordingly, which resulted in amobile, modular system that is EU directivecompliant for birds. As a result of particle size reduction ofdietary ingredients in the animal feedindustry, it has been established thatanalysing the size of particles is notsufficient to explain differences in thedigestibility or growth performance ofanimals. A better understanding thebreaking behaviour of various feedingredient and the ability to describe thisbehaviour via mathematical models is,therefore, of paramount importance toimprove animal performance. Such modelrelating animal in vivo parameters tobreaking behaviour of feed ingredients canthen be used in the optimization of themilling process. This research into breaking behaviour of

ingredients and the equivalent particle sizeis very innovative and of great value for theinternational animal feed industry. Moreover, the suppliers of feed mills and devices forparticle size reduction of feed materials willbenefit from the results of these studies. Byunderstanding the relationship between theequivalent particle size with ileal digestibility

data in pigs and poultry fordry matter, crude protein, crude fat and carbohydrates, the formulation of completediets can be more precise inthe future. Finally, the suppliers of

equipment for the grindingof feed ingredients andpelleting of diets will be ableto fine tune their processesto the desired feed qualityphysical requirements. Inaddition to the process ofpelleting, this also appliesfor the extrusion processesin fish and pet feedmanufacturing. In a forthcoming PhD

project, a literature reviewwill be written and published to obtain aclear picture of the relationships betweennutrient digestibility and particle size in dietingredients for pigs and/or poultry. A number of technological experiments

will be conducted to establish the effect ofgrinding conditions on the particle sizedistribution and equivalent particle sizes ofthe resulting ground materials. A preciseanalysis of the breaking behaviour will be

executed and data analysis will analyze thesize and further derivative physicalquantities. A new mathematical model willbe established that better describesbreaking behaviour as related tophysiological effects in vivo. Finally, a better predictability of nutrient

digestibility from the physical data ofground ingredients will be examined in pigsand/or poultry.

The health and longevity of pet dogs andcats is maintained by the quality of thefoods their owners provide. The foodsneed to contain all the necessary nutrients, have an excellent palatability as well asbeing safe and easy to use. Currently, petfoods are evaluated with the assistance of‘kennel’ dogs and cats. The latter is ofincreasing ethical concern in our societyand one can question in how far they

represent our active, modern day dogsand cats who live with their owners. This 4-year research project aims to

develop ‘in-house’ tests in which ownersand their pets evaluate pet foods togetherwith researchers. The new test protocolswill be evaluated for scientific rigour andmade available world-wide to enabledevelopment of quality pet food productsin collaboration with willing owners andtheir pets. Companies interested in supporting the

development of these science-based andethically acceptable protocols arewelcome to contact the researcher teamof Wageningen University and UtrechtUniversity.
