-Be more interested by others than yourself, be careful about people that ask more than they give (this is not networking!) -Listen, be open, know what is going on around you -Have always something of interest to share with your contacts -Behave with respect and integrity (make sure you are allowed to share the information, don’t gossip!) -Make yourself available to talk with new contacts, to share information, ideas -Quickly update your network about any change in your career or contact details

10

It is easy to develop and

cultivate contacts!

11

Page 12: Networking_C.Billy_300413

-Put in bold the people that you know very well. Why are you connected (review the interations you have with them)? -Underline in one color the contacts who could provide at least 3 new contacts or belong to an association or group. They are network nodes. -Reorganize your address book according to these new categories and update all contact details, so you can easily follow the development of your network.

12

-Take your address book and review your contacts -Reorganize it as an Excel table for easy triage (see example below)

Contact Location Interactions

Name/Surname Country, city, company Information, expertise, best practices, ideas, influence,...

Page 13: Networking_C.Billy_300413

-Review your long term goals and current network -Define your target (people who could support your goals, are doing similar activity as the one you want, or people with who you share common interest) -Prepare your questions -Get introduced/reach to the person through e-mail, mentioning your goal and thanking the person for his/her time -Get to know the person, stick to the schedule, gather enough information to be able to help the person in the future -Send a thank you note and follow-up on any action agreed -Keep your contact regularly updated on progresses toward your goal

«People are always blaming their circumstances for what they are. I don’t believe in circumstances. The people who get on in the world

are those who look for the circumstances they want and, if they can’t find them, make them. »
