    5.2.4. User and ystem Connections

NetworkManager connections are aways either user connections or  system connections. De!ending onthe system-s!ecific !oicy that the administrator has configured$ users may need root !ri"ieges to create

and modify system connections. NetworkManager8s defaut !oicy ena#es users to create and modifyuser connections$ #ut reuires them to ha"e root !ri"ieges to add$ modify or deete system connections.7ser connections are so-caed #ecause they are s!ecific to the user who creates them. In contrast tosystem connections$ whose configurations are stored under the +etc+sysconfig+network-

scrits+  directory *mainy in ifcfg-   interface configuration fies+$ user

connection settings are stored in the %Conf configuration data#ase and the %N&M' keyring$ and are ony

a"aia#e during ogin sessions for the user who created them. Thus$ ogging out of the deskto! sessioncauses user-s!ecific connections to #ecome una"aia#e.

    ip+ #n$rease se$urit& *& making ,'N $onne$tions user-spe$ifi$

0ecause NetworkManager uses the %Conf and %N&M' keyring a!!ications to store user connection

settings$ and #ecause these settings are s!ecific to your deskto! session$ it is highy recommended toconfigure your !ersona ,N connections as user connections. If you do so$ other non-root users on thesystem cannot "iew or access these connections in any way.

System connections$ on the other hand$ #ecome a"aia#e at #oot time and can #e used #y other users onthe system without first ogging in to a deskto! session.

NetworkManager can uicky and con"enienty con"ert user to system connections and "ice "ersa.Con"erting a user connection to a system connection causes NetworkManager to create the ree"antinterface configuration fies under the +etc+sysconfig+network-scrits+  directory$ and to

deete the %Conf settings from the user8s session. Con"ersey$ con"erting a system to a user-s!ecificconnection causes NetworkManager  to remo"e the system-wide configuration fies and create the

    corres!onding %Conf>%N&M' keyring settings.

The A)ai!a*!e to a!! users check#o; contros whether connections are user-s!ecific or system-wide

    'ro$edure 5.". Changing a Conne$tion to *e ser-%pe$ifi$ instead of %&stem-(ide/ or ,i$e-,ersa

    Depending on the s&stem0s po!i$&/ root pri)i!eges ma& *e reuired

(s discussed$ you may need root !ri"ieges on the system in order to change whether a connection isuser-s!ecific or system-wide.

    1. ight-cick on the NetworkManager a!!et icon in the Notification (rea and cick Edit

Conne$tions. The Network Conne$tions window a!!ears.2. Seect the ta# for the ty!e of network connection you want to configure.3. Seect the s!ecific connection that you want to configure and cick Edit.. Check the A)ai!a*!e to a!! users check#o; to ask NetworkManager to make the connection a

system-wide connection. De!ending on system !oicy$ you may then #e !rom!ted for the root

!assword #y the 'o!i$&2it a!!ication. If so$ enter the root !assword to finai=e the change.

Con"ersey$ uncheck the A)ai!a*!e to a!! users check#o; to make the connection user-s!ecific.
