Natural and cityscapes have their own unique form of inspiring awe in artists,

yet both environments need to be experienced thoroughly as to avoid the idealization of the environment you don't know. Throughout my life, rationalizing urban and rural symbols was my first major thematic dichotomy. I used it to illustrate what I thought were my moral and ethical views on canvas . The city as a dystopia muse and nature as a defenseless victim were fatalistic themes I carried for a decade.I have returned after 30 years and been living 3 in my remote hometown capital in central Brazil. cuiabá is surrounded by soy plantations, and I now see that, had I lived here all my life, the rural environment could just as easily have been used as a dystopia muse in my art. Moreover, I had just become a proficient enough kayaker, which allowed me to experience the most sublime river-

waterfall-landscapes and through this activity saw incredible optimism in my future and art. I allowed myself to flow with a highly idealized collection of waterfall paintings, where man and nature coexisted in balance. This whole endeavor was exhibited and named after heraclitus' phrase "one never steps twice in the same river". The collection was met with great success and "seen" by thousands of people.looking back however, I feel that I merely learned the limits of symbolic rationalization, be it inspired by the city or nature. People in general "see" or "understand" the symbols, identify the colors and delineate the forms, leaving little room for imagination. seeing the symbols of pain and happiness in an image is not the same as feeling it yourself. so how to cause one to feel, even if the image doesn't correspond logically to your expectations? Thus, inspired as an astronomer would be, believing to have found the

Page 29: NEu Tymes Vol.50

orbit of a new planet, I search for the combination of a painting that makes one "feel the theme", so as to permeate the individuals conscience. I believe it is the observer that needs to somehow derive the forms from the painting, activating their own personal mementos. In my view the artist is only reminding one to always see forms in the clouds and giving the tools to develop an imagination that is different to every individual. similarly as in physics, one can only know the speed of the electron at the cost of its position around a nucleus, and vice versa. To rationalize feelings through symbolic references is to forget that "feeling something" precedes the quantitative or qualitative aspect. one understands at the cost of feeling, and vice versa.

TRAPPED IN SUBURBIA - EXPERIENCE DESIGNour designs are at first an art of dealing with people; it focusses on human interaction and engaging your audience. We don't expect them to sit back and relax, we want to take them on a graphic journey and surprise them. Maybe sometimes we make them feel uncomfortable, maybe we make them smile. But always we try to open up the senses and set them out to seek and explore. Your audience is not just a target group, they are part of the design elements and we strive to immerse them in narrative design. We see ourselves as storytellers, critical design thinkers and strategists who are aiming to create valuable and tangible experiences for people. There is a chinese saying; Tell me and I'll forget; show me and I may remember, involve me and I'll understand. our designs are focussed on the experience of the audience and there for we choose the medium that has the most impact. This forces us to be interdisciplinary and challenges our talents and knowledge in an exciting manner. We aim to stay openminded, seek out for experiments and play. Not only do we seek interaction with our clients and audience we also seek interaction with other creatives and organize inspirational creative festivals, lectures and exhibitions. We also run the graphic art gallery ship of fools, where we show the works of other creatives.

európa students editionsArt Direction, Editorial Design, Typography

PROJECT DESCRIPTIONI was commisioned by Hungarian publishing house Európa Könyvkiadó to re-design their Students Editions series. The series features classics of Hungarian and world literature aimed at a young readership typically on a tight budget. The concept behind the layout is that the books are "packaged in themselves" in that the main text appears on the cover as a sort of background pattern. TYPEFACESGalliard, Arquitecta

AtelanBranding, Graphic Design, Packaging

Atelán showcases local and international luxury fashion designers in Latin America, and are in constant search of emerging talent with a unique style and vision. Naming, Identity, Packaging and Communications by Firmalt

AtelanAtelán showcases local and international luxury fashion designers in Latin America, and are in constant search of emerging talent with a unique style and vision. They provide a progressive environment for them to promote their work and collaborate with their network of models, stylists, makeup and hair artists, photographers and other industry professionals. Atelán also organizes frequent events to build brand awareness for the designers and create a unique and exclusive shopping experience for fashion-forward consumers. our challenge was to create a brand that could encompass two markets: the designers and the consumers. for designers, the brand represents an exclusive community of remarkable talent. for the consumers, it is a premium brand of luxury fashion. The identity draws inspiration from two things: the process of fashion design, and the resulting attire. The shape of the mark depicts the dress form where designers construct their garments (also known as a mannequin), and the rhombus pattern is a contemporary take on thread interlacing. We selected a color distinct palette of grays and blues in combination with light patterns to accompany the logo. The result is a strong yet feminine emblem that is accompanied by to convey authenticity and exclusivity to their respective markets.
