Identification of High Potential and Gifted StudentsThe High Potential and Gifted Committee collects parent nominations in the annual process of identifying gifted students, including students who are new to the school. This is aligned with the new High Potential and Gifted Education Policy (2019) which recommends that school and community-wide identification processes be used to support the talent development of high potential and gifted students.

In this policy, the term high potential and gifted students replace the previous term of gifted and talented students. A high potential or gifted student may display:

• greater analytical depth• the ability to process information, thought

and learning more quickly, and require fewer repetitions for mastery

• greater capability in a range of skills such as fluid reasoning, creative thinking, memory and abstract reasoning

• the ability to make connections between subjects with relative ease

If you believe that your child should be considered for identification, please complete the Nomination Form below and forward it to the office.

The information booklet below describes the characteristics of high potential and gifted students and how their needs are met at Neutral Bay Public School.

Feedback on Audition and Selection ProcessesLink to audition and selection procedures

A document has been placed on the school website under 'Learning at our school'. This document puts into words our audition and selection procedures at the school. Please send an email addressed to me at [email protected] if you wish to comment or provide feedback.

High School Transition SurveyStarting high school is an important time for many students. This usually involves an adjustment to a new, generally larger school, where students go from being the oldest in the school to the youngest. Students have multiple classes with different teachers and classmates, as well as an increase in workload, responsibilities and travel to and from school. Another challenge facing students moving to high school is making friends and ‘fitting in’ at their new school.

Many students rise to these challenges and are excited about the upcoming changes and opportunities. Some students, however, feel anxious in the face of such changes and require support. To help us plan for a successful transition to high school, we are asking all parents of Year 6 students to complete a brief survey. This information will be used to help local schools, students and their families prepare for the transition to high school.

Please click on the link to begin the survey: https://forms.gle/UcGvf86eSLwzvkQJ8

Year 6 students will be completing at similar survey at school.

If you have any questions about this survey or about high school transition programs, please contact Ms Genevieve Carnegie or your child's class teacher.

Year 3 and 4 ConcertDuring Term 3, all students in Years 3 and 4 will be working on a concert to be performed on Tuesday 22 October, Wednesday 23 October and Thursday 24 October. The title of this year’s concert is ‘A Night at the Museum’.

Peer SupportIn Term 3, students from Years 1-6 will engage in a 9 week Peer Support program. The unit this year is 'Keeping Friends'. It explores the concept of relationships and is based on the concept that friendship skills can be learned in a mutually supportive environment. This unit develops the skills and attitudes necessary to maintain friendships and relationships, and interact with others positively. It focuses on the following key elements:

• identifying qualities of friends• broadening a friendship base• recognising the importance of friendship• becoming more welcoming of others• engaging in positive play

Our Year 6 students have been trained and are well equipped to lead their Peer Support groups next term.

Mrs J. Hudson - KH Class Teacher

This term, KH have been working so well with each other in maths groups. Not only are they learning mathematical skills, but they’re learning to be good sports and work productively with their peers. They are doing a great job!

This term, Year 2 have been learning about the Writing Process as we composed our own narratives. We learnt that the first step successful authors take in composing a story is to prewrite (organising our ideas on paper!) followed then by a rough draft, revising and editing (using C.O.P.S.!). We are currently up to the final stage of the writing process which is ... publishing! The children have been experimenting with a range of different iPad applications that support the publishing of their work, including the apps Book Creator, Toontastic and Explain Everything. We can’t wait to share our digital stories with our peers later this week during a special Year 2 storytime session!

Mr K. Sheather - 6K Class TeacherMs C. Dauth - 3G Class Teacher

Stage 2 News (Years 3 & 4) Stage 3 News (Year 5 & 6)This term, Year 3 has been working on composing information reports, a text type that teaches the children how to present factual information to inform the reader about a specific topic. Generally, an information report is written to provide facts about a living or non-living object.

3G has enjoyed partaking in a variety of activities to develop their independent construction of an information report. This has involved building their field of knowledge through reading reports, stories, poems, videos and their own general knowledge and reflecting this knowledge in a concept map. As a class, we then examined the purpose and structure of information reports and deconstructed a variety of reports highlighting text structure and language features. We then moved onto researching an animal and jointly constructing an information report as a class and then in small groups. Finally, the children independently constructed a couple of their own reports before being given the opportunity to construct a report of their own choice. Here they are hard at work researching their chosen topic, planning, constructing, editing and presenting their reports to the class!

This term in 6K, we have been focusing on components of drama as part of our Creative Arts unit. Students performed activities throughout Term 2 on a fortnightly basis, which developed their vocal skills, body movements and hand gestures. For their assessment, students were placed in groups of four and were tasked with working collaboratively to modify a current fairytale script by interpreting from the perspective of a different character. Students worked for four weeks in modifying the script, allocating roles, building props, acquiring costumes and rehearsing their lines. A few of the adapted fairy tales that were chosen were Snow White, Three Little Pigs, Little Red Riding Hood and Billy Goats Gruff. On Friday of Week 9, the students hosted a performance morning with our buddy class 1G coming to observe as the audience. They really enjoyed the morning and gave ‘warm’ and ‘cool’ feedback to their buddies on what they liked from each performance and aspects they could work to improve for next time. It was an exciting morning and the students loved expressing their creative talents to produce interesting adaptations.
