Joining Junior Band in 2020Neutral Bay Public School has an excellent band program. There is a Junior, Senior and Concert Band. An experienced professional bandmaster, Mr. Ray Hampton, conducts the Junior Band twice a week. There are no auditions for Junior Band. All children interested in being part of the band are very welcome. Most members of the band cannot read music and have never played their instrument before. However, with consistent effort, the children involved in the program progress quickly.

Our Junior Band is open to students in Year 3 and older. Each year in Term 4, students from Year 2 (and older students) who are interested in joining the band program, are invited to join Junior Band for the following year. This involves:

• During Term 4 Week 4, all of Year 2 and other interested students will attend a short ‘Ear Test’ where students will complete a short test of their understanding of rhythm, pitch and melody.

• Monday 11 November - an information morning for parents in the hall, from 8.30am. This is your opportunity to come along to learn about the band program and ask questions of our bandmaster.

• Monday 18 November - those children who are interested in joining Junior Band 2020 will attend an Instrument Selection Tryout (IST) in the hall, conducted by professional tutors under the direction of our bandmaster. This will be organised class-by-class starting at 9:15 am.

Please contact Mr Tan for more information.

World VisionThank you so much for your support of Yogesh and his community in Nepal over the last 8 years. Yogesh and his family have moved away from his village in Nepal, and no longer requires support from the World Vision program. We’re so pleased to have watched and shared Yogesh’s progress and take great pleasure in introducing you to our new World Vision sponsor child, Prity Nampala. Prity is a 5 year old girl who lives in Uganda.

All about me• My birthday is 14 February 2014.• My chore at home is helping in the kitchen.• My favourite game is ball games.• My grade level: Prity doesn't currently attend

school.• I have 2 new sisters.

Prity lives in a remote rural area in central Uganda, about 160km from the capital city. The area has a warm climate with two dry seasons. About 23 000 people live here. Healthcare services are poor and a lack of clean water and sanitation makes waterborne diseases common. Many children are malnourished. School drop outs are high and low education levels make it hard for people to improve their incomes.

The current focus areas in this community include:• Improved access to education• Access to safe, clean drinking water and improved

sanitation • Increased access to health education and care

Miss R. Macri - 1M Class Teacher

Kindergarten News Stage 1 News (Years 1 & 2)

Miss S. Butcher - KB Class Teacher

This term, Kindergarten have been looking at Fairy Tales within our English unit. We have been comparing good and bad characters and brainstorming adjectives to describe these characters. KB have read Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, The Three Little Pigs and lots more exciting fairy tales! We have been working very hard in our writing lessons and have already begun writing our own fairy tale.

We have incorporated the fairy tale theme into our visual arts lessons and have started to draw our own magical castles. We sketched an outline using a pencil before going over it in black pen. We will be using water colours to paint our castles this week.

Last week was an extremely busy week in 1M. In Mathematics we started collecting and organising data regarding ‘The Most Common Season of Birthdays in 1M’ into tables and picture graphs. We then analysed our data and concluded that the most common season was Autumn. We also completed a Kahoot as a class to identify how we have grown as learners this year and goals we still have as learners as we move into Year 2.

1M have been practicing role play scenarios to express a point of view in English. We read ‘The Tale of Two Beasts’ by Fiona Roberton and created various freeze frames that reflect how the Two Beasts feel during each part of the story. We learnt about Pronouns and Noun Groups and have been creating our own sentences and journal entries with various examples. We are also looking forward to performing our assembly item based on our class novel ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ on Friday.

On Thursday, we were lucky enough to see ‘Healthy Harold’ again in the Life Education Van. We learnt about safe living involving emergencies and how to handle real-life scenarios. We were very excited to have our class pet, Gerald meet Harold.

Miss K. Murray - 6M Class Teacher

Stage 3 News (Years 5 & 6)

Mr M. Fitzsimons - 4A Class Teacher

Stage 2 News (Years 3 & 4)Persuasive writing, do we need it in today’s society? This term, 4A has been learning the skills of writing persuasive texts in order to convey their points of view on a range of topics. We have been focusing on brainstorming facts on questions and statements, including; 'All plastic bags should be banned.' We have then enjoyed using out ideas to formulate persuasive sizzling starts. Using anecdotes to ‘hook’ our readers in, as well as features such as; rhetorical questions, dialogue, sounds, and emotions, 4A has been successful in writing introductions that are persuasive and clearly state a strong point of view on a given topic. Below are two examples of sizzling starts that have successfully attempted to persuade and state their viewpoints on different topics.

Topic: All plastic bags should be banned.Plastic bags in 2019? No way! I already thought they were banned now that there were cheaper, safer options. “Errr”, that's the sound the environment makes when you buy one of of those disgusting plastic bags. So how many plastic bags do we waste you ask? 429,000 are dumped into landfills per year, thats alot! When we, the next generation think plastic bags should be banned, it’s hard not to agree with the truth. The truth being, let’s ban them!

Topic: Computer games are better than board games. The gleeful clicking of the mouse fills the air as I am zooming through space at a million miles per hour. Video games are so much better than board games, don’t you think? I could be in a million places, on a plane thousands of miles in the sky, in a submarine underwater, or even fighting a bunch of zombies as they try to take over the city. It’s much better than moving a plastic piece over a ratty old board and rolling a die. In video games you could be battling a kid in Boston, but board games are not nearly that worldwide. Play a board game? I don’t get it. Computer games are obviously the best!

We are excited to continue exploring persuasive writing and hope we can share our work with you throughout the term.

6M have been learning about Tutankhamen this term. We have been exploring the tomb’s curse, whether Tutankhamen was murdered, his controversial monotheistic reign & much, much more!

On Friday of Week 3, students in 6M were able to explore the world of Ancient Egypt because of our VR STEM kit. NBPS has hired this kit from the department and it provided an amazing, engaging experience for the students of 6M.

They walked through the Nile, saw the Pyramids, explored a tomb, stood in a palace and marveled at a temple covered in hieroglyphs! What an experience!
