Kindergarten News

Kindergarten children and teachers would like to take this opportunity to say a very big Thank You to all the volunteers who gave up their time to come in and help with Reading Groups throughout the year. You have helped so much and we really appreciate you giving up your time. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!

Mrs Kelly Lockhart KL Class Teacher

Stage 1 News (Years 1 & 2)

In Year 2 we have been very busy learning about the ‘All Mixed Up’ science topic. So far we have had a great time learning about colour wheels, magic potions, creative cooking and interesting ink. In chemistry a ‘mixture’ refers to a material that is made of two or more substances (or materials) mixed together without being combined chemically. To explore this concept we mixed vegetable dye powder to water to create the three primary colours. After drawing our self-portraits, we then added these colours to create our own crazy hair! The more the colours mixed, the crazier the hair! We hope you enjoy our crazy hair portraits!

Stage 2 News (Years 3 & 4)

Over the last few weeks, Year 4 students have participated in a range of class debates. This follows on from our unit of work on persuasive writing. Topics have included:

• Animals should be kept in zoos • Mobile phones should be allowed in schools • All children should have a bed time • Television is a bad influence on children • Toy guns should be banned from all shops • Should the Australian government give $1000 to all children on their 10th birthday? Students have adopted different roles, including speaker, team advisor, chairperson and timekeeper. Teams have had to present convincing arguments for or against certain topics. The winning team from each class will participate in a grade final at the end of the term. Good luck!

Miss R Ong - 4O Class Teacher

Stage 3 News (Years 5 & 6)

Literacy Circles

This term, 5M have enjoyed exploring their novel study during Literature Circles. This is a similar concept to a book club where participants have in-depth discussions relating to their novel study. Each week, students are given a specific role to complete in their group, such as; Language Tracker, Connector and Travel Agent. As you can see from the photos, students meet in their group to share what they learnt from completing their particular role, and ask questions of each other to check everybody understands the events in the novel. Each student gets a turn of being the Discussion Director. This role requires a lot of organisation and leadership to direct the group through their discussion and ensure everyone has an equal turn to share ideas and ask questions.

Stars of the Week

Congratulations to Hugo Toft 4V who represented Australia and NSW on 21-22 November at the International Friendship Cup for the U/9 Fencing Team. The Australian Team won Gold against China, Malaysia, Japan, Singapore and New Zealand. Well done Hugo!

Congratulations to Madison Au and Cassandra Spillane, both from 5K, who successfully auditioned and gained placements on the Oboe and Saxophone, respectively, in the NSW Public Schools Symphonic Wind Orchestra (SWO). The SWO is one of the student (combined public primary and secondary schools) instrumental ensembles run by the Arts Unit. Maddie and Cassie are two of only ten primary school children who have been offered positions in the SWO in 2016. Maddie and Cassie are currently members of the Arts Alive Combined Primary Schools Band (entry via auditions). Well done!

Congratulations to Solomona Heka 5R who went to a Tae-kwon-do tournament. The tournament was at Burwood PCYC. Solomona came in first place in his age division. Great news!

Only three weeks left of the school year, and all bands are polishing their pieces for the final performances of 2016. We’re looking forward to a spectacular end to a highly successful year.

End of Year Band Concert

A few reminders before the big concert this Sunday at our new, spacious, air-conditioned venue with plenty of comfortable seating. Entry is by ticket to cover the cost of hiring the Auditorium at North Sydney Leagues Club (all children under 18 free, adults $10). To buy tickets please go to the following link. http://www.trybooking.com/JPWS

We need help on Sunday to transport all of the percussion equipment from the school to Cammeray and back (at around 12.30pm and 5.30pm). Finally, please make sure that all instruments and music come home this week as we will not be able to retrieve any from classrooms.

Let us know your likes, dislikes and ideas for the big event, via email to Belle Jackson at [email protected]. The date for the carnival 2016 will be released this term, so you can save the date early!

Hello from the Uniform Shop team The Uniform Shop is open every Tuesday (8.30-9.30am). Flexischools orders are being sent out daily - occasionally delays may occur. If you still haven't received your order within 2 days of the expected delivery date, please email me and I will chase it up. There may have been delays earlier this week due to the Year 6 delivery squad being away at camp :-) Price change: Please note, from 1st December 2015, the price for the Summer Dress and the Winter Tunic will be increasing to $60 each. This is due to an increase in manufacturing costs. Kindergarten 2016 parents Welcome to our school! As well as being able to purchase uniforms from the Uniform Shop on Tuesday mornings (8.30am-9.30am), we also offer an online shop via the Flexischools website (www.flexischools.com.au). Registering for a new account is easy, just follow the directions on the website. To add your new Kindergarten 2016 child, click Add Student. For their class, please scroll right to the end of the list of classes and choose ADMIN. Once your child's class is known next year, it can be amended easily. For now, any orders that come through with ADMIN as the class will be set aside and sent to the school office for collection. I will email you when they are ready for collection. The school office is open 8.45am-3.15pm Monday to Friday. Closure Dates The Uniform Shop will open for the last time this year on Tuesday 8th December - it will be closed on Tuesday 15th December. The last day for Flexischools deliveries will be Wednesday 9th December. That means your order must be placed by 3.50pm on Tuesday 8th December in order to be received before the school holidays. Any orders placed after this time will be available for collection on our special opening day in January - I haven't finalised the date with school yet but it is likely to be Wednesday 27th January 2016. The shop will be open for instore purchases that day as well as collection of Flexischools orders. More information will be shared soon. Returns policy: Flexischools purchases: please email me to let me know and then leave the item in the box underneath the mail boxes at the office with your details (including Flexischools order number) and I will process the exchange/refund ASAP. If an exchange is required, the new item will be sent out to your child's classroom. If a refund is required, the funds will be refunded back to your Flexischools account as soon as possible. In store purchases: For exchanges, please email me to let me know and then leave the item in the box underneath the mail boxes at the office with your details and I will process the exchange as soon as possible and have the new item

sent out to your child's classroom. For refunds, please come to the Uniform Shop on a Tuesday morning with your original form of payment (and receipt, if available). All returned items must be in saleable condition with tags still attached. Please note that I am not at the Uniform Shop all of the time and that it may take a few days for me to action exchanges/refunds. Notifying me by email is a good way to give me a heads up! Faulty items: If you have a faulty item, please either leave in the box at the office (with a note with your child's name, class, details of the fault, and, if possible, details of the original purchase) or bring into the shop during normal opening hours. Second Hand Items: Donations of good quality, clean items of clothing are always welcome. Please leave donations in the box underneath the mail boxes at the school office or bring to the Uniform Shop during opening hours. If you want to buy a second hand item and can't make it along to the shop on a Tuesday morning, please email [email protected] . Also, if you have previously put in a request for a second hand item but you no longer need it, please email so you can be taken off the list.
