Recently I had the pleasure of meeting with a dynamic group of young professionals who have founded The Young Friends of The Community Coalition (YFCC). As I sat listening to teachers, lawyers, musicians, business owners, environmental advocates, caterers and the list could go on, I kept thinking how lucky our community is to have this “next generation” of young leaders who want to get their hands dirty and give back in a meaningful way. Even better, they have chosen The Community Coalition because they think our model is a smart business model. They are the future of The Community Coalition and what a bright future it is!

The Community Coalition continues to fascinate people. Is it because our model is unique? Is it the breadth and depth of services our Member Organizations provide? Is it because we have one of the most fun and notorious fundraisers in Chester County? Is it the collaborative aspect? Is it because we quietly go about our business and since our inception have distributed over $6.2 million dollars to our Member Organizations, and transformed over 100,000 lives in Chester County? I think the answer is yes to all of these questions. What we do is diverse; we don’t fit into a cookie cutter mold and for me that is the beauty and the challenge of The Community Coalition. I say challenge because it’s a complex model to explain. Despite that, people are drawn to, and believe in, what we do.

My first year as President of the Board has not been without its hurdles, but the rewards have been far greater. We are so pleased to have Kathleen Sanger join the CC family as Executive Director. She has been very busy in her first few months and seems to handle whatever comes her way with grace, diligence and humor. The Community Coalition has an extraordinary Board and I am grateful every day for their ability to listen and REALLY hear, for their “roll up the sleeves, let’s get it done” mentality and for their vision. Our Member Organizations are a group of hardworking people – their energy and insight keep us focused on what is most important and that is continuing to discover the most impactful ways to reach those in need in Chester County.

Finally, we could not do what we do without your friendship and support. You are the reason we are able to share resources and transform lives. We are grateful for all you do for The Community Coalition and we thank you.

Wine expert Charles Antin guided blind tastings of battling vineyards. Guests sampled and voted on incredible offerings in red, white and dessert wines —a classic battle between Old World and New World wines!

The event took place beneath Edward Melcarth’s painting The Last Supper, which was apropos as 2014 marked The Cc’s final event at The Forbes Galleries (a wonderful new venue will host this event in 2015). And if the wine tasting was not enough, guests bid on one-of-a-kind auction items such as six bottles of the best wines in the world including the best of Bordeaux, Rhone, and the USA. Every bottle was rated a perfect 100 points by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate.

This marks the 22nd successful event by this extraordinary committee.

The 2014 Scavenger Hunt

BIG SHOES TO FILL! In June 2014, Moira Mumma retired as President of The Community Coalition board. Moira was one of the founders of the CC and served as Board President for 23 years. Eliza Zimmerman, a board member since 2005 was appointed President.

At the 2014 fall Scavenger Hunt, Eliza made the following remarks: (Holding up a pair of size 16 shoes!) “In June I stepped into some rather large shoes! Happily I am not walking in these shoes alone as I am surrounded by a dedicated hardworking board and loyal, generous constituents who realize the impact of the work we do at The Community Coalition. Moira is a role model for me and for many who are involved in the non-profit sector. She works tirelessly for the Coalition and other organizations giving of her time, talent and resources so that others’ lives are improved.”

Moira has stayed actively involved in The Community Coalition as she chairs both the New York wine dinner and an event in Palm Beach. She also continues her work at Citizen Advocacy of Chester County one of the Coalition’s member organizations.

“I am grateful beyond words for Moira and Ken’s wise counsel, willingness to step up when needed and most importantly their friendship. “said Zimmerman. “After 23 years of service it would have been understandable if they had chosen to take a giant step away, but that is not their style and for that I am thankful.”

It was another amazing night of good friends, good fun, good food, and a little healthy competition! Buses of Cheetahs, Impalas, Spider monkeys, Leopards, Lions, and more scoured Chester County to solve wacky clues and photograph stunts such as capturing the entire team in a mid-air jump (as demonstrated on the cover!) All of this hard work was clearly not to win the most unattractive trophy ever, but to support and celebrate The Community Coalition.

ASSOCIATION FOR THE COLONIAL THEATRE ACT enhances the collective well-being of the region by restoring the landmark Colonial Theatre and promoting cultural, economic and civic life.

CITIZEN ADVOCACY OF CHESTER COUNTY, INC. Citizen Advocacy initiates voluntary one-to-one relationships between a person with a disability who is isolated and at risk, and someone else from their community who has corresponding qualities and resources. Advocates are asked to build a personal relationship with their partner, and also to take action on their partner’s behalf.

OPEN HEARTH INC. Open Hearth provides innovative programs to help people end the cycle of homelessness and achieve financial self-sufficiency. Through its own direct provision of services, as well as an established network of other nonprofits, Open Hearth supports and empowers people as they acquire affordable housing, a means of transportation and financial viability.

ORION COMMUNITIES, INC. Orion provides interim case management, outreach, and supportive services to residents of the Greater Phoenixville Area. Orion connects residents to services that engender hope, dignity, and reliance for those experiencing poverty, disability, or illness.

PHOENIXVILLE AREA POSITIVE ALTERNATIVES (PAPA) PAPA offers the only formal, structured academic and athletic programs for at-risk youth aged 7-17 in the Phoenixville area.
