Volunteer Needed We are looking for a parishioner (who lives in close proximity to the parish) who would be willing to help with securing the new Ministry Center (former OLP School) after nightly activities. If you are interested in helping or would like more information, please call Margaret at 683-6522, ext. 104.

Vocation View We have the courage to embrace the Cross when we grow in our belief in the divine Son. We express our

belief in the Son when we are obedient to what God wants of us, even when it is inconvenient, challenging, or uncertain; when we put aside our own concerns and

    satisfactions in order to reach out to someone in need;

when we remain faithful to what our state of life call us to do. Is God calling you to be a priest, deacon, brother, or sister? Call Father Walter Szczesny at 847-5535.

New Ministry Center Our New Ministry Center has been re-located to the former OLP Elementary School building. Many rooms are currently being renovated including our new Marian Community Room. To assist with your room locations, there is a floor plan on each floor level. Watch your mail for our September flyer with information on events and activities including the upcoming open house.

A Message from Sister Joyce I would like to take this opportunity to share some wonderful news for our parish! Mary Katherine (Mary Kate) Thielman, one of our parishioners who was helping with Youth Group, entered into formation with the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia in Nashville, TN, on the Solemnity of the Assumption, August 15th! She will be starting a time that she describes as being, “particularly devoted to prayer, study, community life and listening ever more attentively to the voice of the Lord in my life”. As part of the process of discernment, the sisters in formation do not have a phone, email, Facebook, etc. In Mary Katherine’s own words, “As a sister, I will be a student and eventually a teacher, but before all else, I am called to bring the needs of the Church before her Bridegroom in prayer”. Let us lift up Mary Katherine in our daily prayers and thank God for the blessings of this religious vocation from Our Lady of Pompeii Parish. If you and/or any parish organization would like to send a card of congratulations or prayer support, or ask her to pray for a certain need, you may address the envelope to:

Sr. Mary Katherine Thielman Sacred Heart Novitiate

801 Dominican Drive Nashville, TN 37228

I can’t promise that you will get an answer back, as the first year of formation may not allow her to respond to many. But rest assured that she will receive your cards and wishes and prayer intentions and will keep them all in her prayers. It would be wonderful to remember Mary Katherine with a card on occasions such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, or any time that the Spirit moves you to do so! If I hear any more from Mary Katherine, I will share it with you through the bulletin! God bless!

    Young Adult & Family

Ministry; Adult Education This year’s Adult Education program will focus on learning and then using the concepts in the book Rebuilt, written by Fr. Michael White and Thomas Corcoran. Using these ideas and approaches, we will develop and implement new ways to better serve our Young Adults (20’s-30;s) and Families.

After years of learning how to be better followers of Christ, this year we focus on practicing all that we have learned to become Disciples in Action and help strengthen, develop and expand the foundation of the future of our parish through service and support to this very important segment of our parish.

It’s going to be an exciting year! We will learn, grow, share, invite and support each other as we help the parish continue its ministry of service to those who are and who want to be members of the Pompeii Family. As we serve others, we will also grow in our own understanding and appreciation for our Catholic Faith.

We will be meeting each Thursday night, beginning on September 18th, in the Ministry Center, 129 Laverack, at 7:00 PM. Please purchase a copy of the book and begin reading.

Please remember in your daily prayers those who have died, especially Carmella Fernandes, and Susan Marino. Also, please remember those who are ill, especially Eugene Nowak, Arlene Ipolito, Susan Ekstrum, Martha Celeste, Gladys Hens, Mary Gabrielli, Marty Ostrowski, Angeline DiLuzio, Michael Fridmann, Betty Earsing, Steve Allen, Judy Brown, Julia Zynda, Daniel Krzanak, Dave Keller, Chet Binda, Linda D’Auria, Carley Stefaniak, Nicole Miller, Evangaline Lanthier, Marlene Smith, Baby Cameron, Grandpa Steve, Dennis Casillo, Gilda Baccari, Jadwiga Przybyszewski, Ron Brady, Mary & Dennis Lojek, Thomas Golpl, Grace & Jacob Easton, Ken Majka, Thomas Ackley, Jr., Emily (Goldyn) Harzewski, Judy Lukowski, Irene & Richard Domagala, Francis Rash, Dorothy Miniri, Mary Gallo, Jeff Faatz, Arlene Passalugo, Phyllis Newton, John DiBartolomeo, Linda Farruggio, and all those who are ailing, home-bound or in nursing homes.

Respect Life Pope Francis has expressed his public support for the 40 Days for Life ministry that promotes respect for the lives of all unborn children, and says he greatly appreciates the dedicated work that they do in a “Culture of Waste”.

“I affirm and encourage all pro-life efforts that attempt to reach the ultimate goal of eliminating abortion in order to build a culture of life using peaceful, prayerful, and charitable approaches, including the 40 Days for Life Campaign as they collaboratively work with our office at the Diocese of Buffalo.” (A quote from Bishop Richard Malone).

Curé of Ars Christ the King Seminary will host its annual Curé of Ars awards dinner on Thursday, October 2 at the Hyatt Regency Buffalo. The Dinner will honor Rev. Robert M. Yetter, pastor of St. Mary’s Church in Swormville, and Mr. & Mrs. Francis E. Zagrobelny, dedicated Seminary advocates and volunteers. The award is presented each year to those whose lives reflect the qualities of Christian dedication and service that marked the life of St. John Vianney. If you wish to attend, or would like more information, please contact Laura DeMizio at 716-847-8373 or [email protected].

Social Club Let’s kick off the new year with a tail-gate get-together. The Social Club will meet on September 20th at 6:00 PM in the Aud. on Laverack Avenue.

We’ll roast up some hot dogs, play some games and start off the year with some fun and hopefully some new ideas, too.

To round out the menu for this evening, if your name starts with A-G, please bring a tailgate side dish, H-M, a dessert, and N-Z, a snack.

If you plan to attend, please call Nancy & Bill at 684-5167 or Norm at 685-2985 by September 17 so that we will have enough ‘dogs’ and beverages to go around. See you there!

Holy Humor A priest waited in line to have his car filled with gas just before a long holiday weekend. The attendant worked quickly, but there were many cars ahead of him. Finally, the attendant motioned him toward a vacant pump. “Father,” said the young man, “I’m so sorry about the delay. It seems as if everyone waits until the last minute to get ready for a long trip.” The priest chuckled, “I know what you mean. It’s the same in my business.”

    Faith Moment Reflection

for Today’s Readings What are you willing to give up for someone else? Today’s gospel reading gets right to the heart of what Christians believe - Jesus Christ was willing to give up his life for us so that we may experience new life in heaven. There is no greater love than that. Take a few minutes to ponder a love so incredible, so sacrificial, and let the power of that love guide your actions this week. Give up that coveted parking space near the door to someone who may have trouble walking. Give up your seat in the waiting room to the elderly patient. Give up the habit of judging and criticizing others. Realize that God loves every one of us so much, it is beyond our comprehension. When we give up something for others, no matter how small it may seem, we build a better understanding of just how great a gift Jesus gives us.
