Thank you for volunteering to fill this important position on your service unit team. This course will prepare you for your role as Service Unit Recognitions Chair. In 1987, Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) implemented a nationwide system of recognitions for adults in Girl Scouting. This system includes both recognition for outstanding service and recognitions that are earned by meeting established criteria. This supplement is designed to give service units information and forms for the GSUSA recognition system and Girl Scouts San Diego. Information pertaining to awards can be found in this supplement. There is one copy of each of the council-level recognitions forms in this supplement. Additional forms may be obtained via the website www.sdgirlscouts.org/recognitions. There are two levels of recognitions for volunteers, year-end service unit awards, and council/GSUSA awards:

Year-end service unit recognitions events are planned by the service units and held at the final service unit meeting of the year or as a separate event. This is a chance to distribute formal and informal recognitions and to reward volunteers for their achievements during the current membership year.

Council/GSUSA recognitions are awarded to those volunteers who have contributed significantly to the well-being of the council. These volunteers are nominated by their peers for their achievements and awarded their recognition at the Volunteer Conference and Celebration.

Be able to create a recognitions plan for your service unit.

Be able to use Adult Recognitions in Girl Scouting, the overviews of adult recognitions and the other information in this course as references for awards and recognitions.

Understand the criteria for approval for awards and recognitions.

Be able to prepare nomination forms and endorsements for council-level recognitions.

This training is designed to be completed at your own pace. The training package is yours to keep and you are encouraged to use it as a reference. You will be considered to have completed this course when the evaluation/registration page and the self-assurance questionnaire are received by the volunteer services team at the Girl Scout office. You may mail or deliver the completed registration information page to the Girl Scout office at: Attn: Volunteer Services Girl Scouts San Diego 1231 Upas Street San Diego, CA 92103

You can also email your completed registration information page to [email protected].

Everyone likes to feel appreciated for a job well done. Whether in the form of a simple thank you note for a small job or a formal commendation for years of faithful service, any acknowledgment is a signal to the recipient that she or he is noticed and appreciated – that she or he is RECOGNIZED. The GSUSA Adult Recognition program is not only about being a terrific person and doing a good job, but also about significant accomplishment. GSUSA Adult Awards should be given for truly significant service in Girl Scouting. Taken from Adult Awards in Girl Scouting (GSUSA)

Part of your responsibility as Service Unit Recognitions Chair is to educate and inform the volunteers in your service unit about the recognitions that are available. We like to think of this as building an “Attitude of Gratitude” within your service unit. Check with your Service Unit Manager to schedule brief informational presentations at each service unit meeting. These presentations will allow you to:

Educate service unit members about recognitions at the council and service unit levels

Keep them informed about key deadlines

Remind them about information you need to collect (such as nomination forms)

Let them know where to acquire recognitions forms

Progression is an important part of the Girl Scout philosophy. Recognitions should be awarded at appropriate times throughout the life of an adult Girl Scout. It will be your responsibility to ensure recipients have met the criteria for an award and that volunteers who have gone above-and-beyond get nominated for additional recognition. As Recognitions Chair, your enthusiasm for recognizing volunteers will carry over to the rest of the service unit team and soon everyone will be thinking about new, creative ways to say thank you!

Being aware of the extra effort put forth by an individual

Taking the time to mention a person's service at a service unit meeting or in private to thank them

Helping people to attain a higher level of achievement

Recommending a person for special training or participation noted at all levels

Developing a climate wherein work is sincerely noticed and noted at all levels

Asking an outstanding volunteer to represent Girl Scouts at a community event

Encouraging a volunteer to get involved on the next level (service unit, council, national) The way Girl Scout’s recognizes people helps to define accountability for initiation, promotion, and retention, and provides for follow-through at every level of the Girl Scout operation.

Anyone in an adult volunteer position

Individuals and organizations in the community who provide invaluable support to Girl Scouting

Families in Girl Scouting NOTE: staff can be informally recognized at your service unit level but are not eligible for council/GSUSA-level awards.

Recognitions can be done at several venues on special Girl Scout holidays, at Girl Scout meetings, at a special recognition event, immediately following service rendered, at community recognition events, etc.

A display of photos in the community honoring individuals who have given outstanding service

A framed photograph of the Girl Scouts who participated in a particular project or event (can be a blown-up snapshot)

A statement published in a Girl Scout publication or community paper, or broadcast on radio or television

Birthday or holiday greetings made by the girls

A mention at an appropriate Girl Scout meeting

A mention in the service unit newsletter

Send a press release or photo to your community newspaper detailing the volunteer’s service

A mention using council publications and social media such as Facebook

Volunteer Appreciation Week—the third week in April—is set aside especially for you. Girl Scouts pay tribute to the volunteers who help girls make the world a better place. The week centers on the long-standing National Girl Scout Leaders’ Day (April 22), but expands the definition of volunteers beyond troop leaders to include all the volunteers who work on behalf of girls in Girl Scouting.

Council-level awards: Overview

Council awards show recipients that they are noticed and appreciated at higher level than the service unit. You can participate

in thanking and recognizing those adults who make a difference in the lives of girls by nominating someone you know for a

council award.

Council awards are presented at council’s recognitions event, Volunteer Conference and Celebration. These awards require a

nomination and two endorsements.

Complete packets are due into the council office by April 30. Please check the website for updates.

Council-level award descriptions:

Appreciation Pin- recognizes adults who have delivered outstanding service to one or more service unit areas.

Cookie Award – recognizes service unit cookie team members (e.g. cookie coordinators, booth coordinators, and

rewards coordinators), cookie cupboard volunteers and volunteer regional managers who surpassed their position duties

by increasing sales and/or providing extraordinary service to girls and/or volunteers.

Family Award – recognizes service benefiting the entire council, beyond the troop and service unit level, over a period

of time, by more than one member of a family.

Friendship Award – recognizes individuals, groups, organizations or businesses outside of Girl Scouts that have

supported the mission of Girl Scouts San Diego by providing superior service and/or assistance to the entire council.

Honor Pin – is presented for outstanding service to two or more service unit areas or program delivery audiences.

President’s Award – recognizes the efforts demonstrated by an entire service unit to enhance Girl Scouting in its

community during a membership year.

SHARE Award- recognizes adults who have built awareness and support for the Share Her Annual Real Expense

program, which helps keep Girl Scouting available and affordable for all.

Thanks Badge – recognizes adult members whose truly outstanding performance has benefited the entire council. The

Thanks Badge recognizes members whose ongoing commitment, leadership and service have had an exceptional,

measurable impact on meeting the mission-delivery goals and priorities of the entire council or the entire Girl Scout

Movement.

Thanks Badge II – recognizes adult members who have already received the Thanks Badge and have continued to

contribute in extraordinary ways that benefit the entire council. The Thanks Badge II recognizes a previous Thanks Badge

recipient who has continued to provide exemplary service in a leadership role which resulted in a measurable impact

benefitting the entire Girl Scout Movement.

Volunteer of Excellence Award - recognizes volunteers who have contributed outstanding service while partnering

directly with girls to implement the Girl Scout leadership experience through use of the national program portfolio, or

who have contributed outstanding service in support of the council’s mission delivery to girl and adult members.

Membership Numeral Guards and Years of Service Recognitions- recognize registered adult members for years

of active volunteer service at five-year intervals, starting at five years. Members can purchase pins at council stores. For

years 15 and above, council provides pins free of charge. Members simply need to fill out the form.

All council-level awards require nominations and endorsements. Nominations are not required for Membership Numeral Guards 15 and more and Service 15 Years and more, but specific forms must be submitted to council. For all council-level awards, the deadline for submission of the nomination and all required accompanying endorsements is April 30. The Recognitions Task Group reviews and approves or denies council awards.

1. Read through the Awards Summary and to select the appropriate award for the individual. 2. Read the criteria for the award thoroughly. Be sure this award is the best award for the candidate. If

an individual is nominated for the wrong award, the Recognitions Task Group will not necessarily change the nomination to the more appropriate award.

3. Address all criteria completely and provide detailed information. It is the responsibility of the nominator to make sure all documentation is included with the nomination.

4. Provide a copy of the requirements for the award to the people writing the endorsements in support of the nominee. The person submitting the nomination form may not write a letter of endorsement.

5. The nominator is responsible for collecting and reviewing all information to ensure that the endorsement meets the award criteria.

6. A complete nomination packet includes:

a. One nomination (from one person) b. Two or more endorsements (from at least two additional people)

Keep a copy of the nomination and all endorsements before sending them in!

7. Submit forms online to [email protected] . Forms and overviews are available on the council

website at www.sdgirlscouts.org/recognitions-awards. Samples of nomination forms can be found in this supplement. Deadlines for submittal of council forms (applications, nominations and endorsements) are critical. Forms are date-stamped when received to ensure timeliness. Applications received after the deadline will not be considered for recognition. For more information, contact Volunteer Services at [email protected].

The volunteer Recognitions Task Group is responsible for reviewing and making recommendations for approval or denial of the council-level recognitions. The nominations and endorsements are reviewed and carefully considered individually by each task group member. The Recognitions Task Group convenes, discusses each nomination and votes on approval or denial based on whether or not the nominee has met the criteria and carefully considers any extenuating circumstances. The Recognitions Task Group consists of 4-6 registered volunteers. They may be former Recognitions Chairs, Service Unit Managers, leaders and representatives from the alumnae group. The Recognitions Task Group members should reflect the geographic, racial/ethnic and socio-economic composition of the council.

Throughout the year, you will want to recognize the efforts of volunteers at service unit meetings. In addition to monthly recognition, you can give service unit awards. Service unit awards are a way to recognize leaders and community partners in your service unit. They are presented at the service unit’s end-of-year recognitions event.
