As the President of the Scandinavian Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine (SSAI) it is my pleasure to welcome you all to our 31.Biennial Congress, this time in beautiful Bergen.

This SSAI Congress is a joint venture with the Norwegian Society of Anaesthesiology (NAF). I am very happy to see that the co-operation between SSAI and the National Society has worked as good here as it did in Odense in 2009 and Gothenburg in 2007. Only together will we get better and bigger and be able to compete on the international congress market. But, on the other side we do not want to become too big. The Scandinavian Congresses have always had a certain flavour that we would like to nourish and develop further. The “Bergen Crew” chaired by Professor Hans Flaatten has worked hard to secure this through a fantastic scientific and social program.

For now please enjoy the scientific and social program, including the already famous “Moon-walk”. Please note that this Congress includes a much higher level of interactivity between you as a participant and the Faculty compared to other congresses. Make use of it.

Our main sponsors and exhibitors make our biennial congresses doable. We have a big and very interesting Exhibition area for you to visit. The SSAI Congress is an excellent meeting point for you and your colleagues from all over Scandinavia and elsewhere. Feel home, and please help us make sure everyone else feels at home and included too!

Eldar SøreidePresident SSAI

On behalf of Bergen city, Haukeland University Hospital, the Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care and University of Bergen; we are honored and proud to host the 31st SSAI congress.

Preparation of the congress has been an on-going process since the previous congress in Odense in 2009. At an early stage it was decided to do something ”radical” with the content of the congress. In spite of all recent knowledge about learning and education, most congresses still devote most of the time to catheter-based lectures. We hence had as a goal to have half of the congress time devoted to interactivity. As a result, three out of 7-8 parallel sessions are simulation sessions, not as an add-on with ”extra-cost”, but integrated as part of the whole congress. This idea has become a reality thanks to a number of enthusiastic co-workers and a supportive industry! We have, as you will experience, also said farewell to traditional poster presentation and oral poster sessions, and have merged the two into “electronic poster presentation”. The format is the traditional poster, with standing audience around the presenter, but content and form is more from the oral session. We hope your will enjoy it. You can also find the electronic posters on the congress USB stick!

We will of course have a number of more traditional lectures, and also interactive sessions on Friday.

Do not forget to experience some of Bergen when you are here. Take a stroll in the characteristic wooden house area in Fjellsiden (“mountain side”), and start your walking at the lower station of the funicular Fløybanen. You may also continue up to Fløyen (altitude 320 m/1h walk) where we will have the congress dinner on Friday evening. Our congress providers will also help you with more suggestions for exploring Bergen and its surroundings.

A lot of people have been working to get this congress up and running, in particular the congress committee and the simula-tion faculty! Thanks also to the Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care at Haukeland University Hospital for access to its man/woman power. The SSAI board has also been sup-portive of the new concepts, for which we are grateful. I am also happy to recognize the continuing support from the industry to the SSAI congress; obviously they also find it of importance.ENJOY!

Thursday June 16 | 20:00 – >

Full-moon walk across “Vidden” The announced “Full moon walk across Vidden” was over-booked due to a much larger interest in this event than anticipated.

For safety reasons, we had to limit the number of participants.

If the weather outlook is reasonable we will have a fresh “on site” registration in the form of sale of a lim-ited number of tickets for the Ulriken cable car (NOK 100) starting at the registration desk in Grieghallen Wednesday June 15 from 15.00h.

Please, observe:• The ”Full-moon walk across Vidden” is a fairly demanding,

12-14 km walk along the mountain ridge from Ulriken to Fløien (total ascent: 250m, total descent: 800 m.) suitable for the more fit congress participant.

• This mountain walk will only be implemented if weather conditions are reasonable

Wednesday June 15 | 18:30 – 20:00

Reception, GrieghallenAfter the end of the first congress day there will be an informal Opening Reception hosted by the City of Bergen in the exhibition area in Grieghallen. Admission: Free (for participants that have registered for this Reception at their registration). After the reception an out-door concert is scheduled on the square outside Grieghallen: the world farewell tour for the heavy metal band Judas Priest. (Concert admission is not included in your registration)

• Most of the walk will be on uneven paths in a mountain-ous terrain, some areas may be wet. Participants should have sturdy shoes.

• Participants are advised to bring their own backpack for extra clothing (wind-/ waterproof jacket, a pullover, a cap, and possibly also gloves, their camera, and some food (a baguette, some chocolate, and a bottle of water to drink)).

• Even if we are close to Mid-summer, the evening tempera-ture may drop below 10°C.

• As most of the tour is above the three line, a wind may also have a quite chilling effect.

• Meeting point will probably be the lower station of the Ulriksbanen cable car at 20.00h.

• After arriving at the top station (607 m) you will need 3,5–4 hours to walk across “Vidden” to Fløien and then down to the city centre and your hotel.

• If weather conditions are favourable you will experience a memorable walk with the full moon rising in the east, towards the sunset in north-west at around 23.05 h.

• Local colleagues will act as tour guides.

Friday June 17 | 19:00–23:30

Conference Dinner, Fløien FolkerestaurantThe Congress Dinner will mark the end of the 31st SSAI congress.

We will meet at Fløibanen from 18.45h for a funicu-lar ride to Fløien (320

m). There you will have spectacular views of Bergen, its harbour, and the archipelago in the west towards the North Sea, before a memorable congress dinner at Fløien Folkerestaurant.

Dress: informal. Limited participation.

If you did not register for this event when you registered for the congress, inquire at the Registration desk.

Participate in a short interview, win an iPad,!

How do you rate the simulation session? How do you like the exhibition?

This and other aspects of the congress are important for us to know, and as a part of the congress we have a small project to evaluate various aspects of the simulation sessions in particular, but also the congress in general. Hence we want to interview a number of congress participants, both from those of you who have experience from our simulation ses-sions, and those who have not. The interview will take 5-7 minutes, and will be performed directly on an Ipad. We have two interviewers Thursday and Friday, one going around, and another at a dedicated booth (look for the Win-an-Ipad-sign!).

Those participating will take part in a draw after the congress, and both Ipads will then be given to two lucky winners.

PulmoVista 500 – New insights into the lung

The PulmoVista 500 shows up to 50 images of lung ventilation per second. It is the world‘s first EIT (electrical impedance tomography) device intended for everyday clinical use, which depicts the regional distribution of the ventilation volume in the lung continuously right at the patient‘s bedside. This makes it possible for the physician track the impact of ventilation therapy in real time. PulmoVista 500 is ready for use within minutes and works without radiation.

Product characteristics and advantages- Continuous information about the regional distribution of ventilation, represented as dynamic images, curves and parameters- Trend mapping of changes in end-expiratory lung volume - Mechanical ventilation may lead to lung damage and even sepsis if incorrectly applied. Information about the regional ventilation distribution is thus of vital importance for the therapy of mechanically ventilated patients.- Monitoring with PulmoVista 500 is non-invasive and does not require radiation in contrast to chest X-rays and CT (Computed Tomography) scans.
