BTEC Qualifications
Formal measures of competence are increasingly being demanded and the following two BTEC Certificates have proved popular since their inception in 1997.
The BTEC Certificates are nationally recognised qualifications in steam systems. They offer a broader base than the well established City & Guilds course (see M2, page 8) and are a combination of home study and Cheltenham based courses. No prior qualifications are necessary before working towards these certificates and students will be evaluated throughout by a variety of assessment methods.
A BTEC Certificate is awarded on successful completion of Units 1 and 2. Unit certificates can be offered if appropriate. In addition to Cheltenham based course fees, a single charge of £75 will be made for each certificate.

Automatic Controls – An Introduction 1
This course aims to give a basic introduction to automatic controls, with specific emphasis on temperature control. It is useful to engineers who are involved with control systems and also for mechanical or electrical engineers who need a general appreciation of controls.
Hot Water Heating
This course focuses on one small, but important part of the building services package – the hot water heating system.
It broadly covers some aspects of the design function. It is beneficial to anyone whose work brings them into contact with hot water heating systems, providing basic knowledge for those who have not specifically trained as a heating engineer, such as works engineers, plant managers and hospital engineers.
Steam and Condensate Loop book The most comprehensive practical guide to steam systems in recent times has arrived with the publication of The Steam and Condensate Loop book.
The Steam and Condensate Loop book explains the principles underpinning steam engineering and heat transfer. It covers all aspects of steam and condensate systems, from the boiler house, through the steam distribution system to the point of use, and recovering and returning condensate back to the boiler.

Steam Utilisation 1
This is the most comprehensive course on steam utilisation available.
All users need to be aware of the properties of steam so that they can benefit from it fully.
System designers need to be using the most modern steam systems available to maximise plant efficiency and operation.
Those responsible for installing systems must be sure specifications are understood and those maintaining them need to be able to diagnose and rectify faults.

Boiler operation accreditation scheme (Boas)
D6A
What is BOAS?
The Boiler Operation Accreditation Scheme (BOAS) provides national accreditation for industrial boiler operators and boiler plant managers. Spirax Sarco is a licensed and approved BOAS training provider. The D6A course provides training to the BOAS syllabus and includes the written examination1. Candidates are also interviewed by a Gastec assessor during the course 2.
Successful candidates may use the designatory letters “Cert IBO” (Certified Industrial Boiler Operator) or “Dip BOM” (Diploma in Boiler Plant Operation Management). Candidates from both award categories take the same course and written papers. Interviews are specific to each award. The awards are valid for five years, after which a refresher course becomes necessary 4.

Introduction
This course is a refresher course for boiler operators and managers/supervisors who are already accredited within the Boiler Operation Accreditation Scheme. The refresher course should be taken on the 5th anniversary of gaining the BOAS award and 5 yearly thereafter.

A course registration form is printed on page 17 of this brochure. Please photocopy and complete the form in order to book your course. A course registration form can also be found at: www.SpiraxSarco.com/uk/training. Please note that prices are per person.

BTECCandidates wishing to take a BTEC qualification (see page 2) should initially complete the BTEC information request form on page 18. Candidates must complete the steam correspondence course prior to attending the M1 or D1 course. Similarly, they must complete the controls correspondence course prior to attending the D2 course. The D6 course also forms part of BTEC.
BOAS (D6A and D6AR Refresher course)An additional registration form must be completed. Please ask for further details. There are also additional assessment fees.
Accommodation
A list of local hotels and guest houses is sent with confirmation of booking.
Cancellation Cancellation will be allowed up to two weeks prior to a course, after which a 50% cancellation fee will be payable. Booked candidates who do not show will be charged a 100% cancellation fee. However, substitutions areallowed at any time.
