Academy Of DanceRecital Set At SAC

Yankton’s Academy of Dance willpresent the dance recital “Heart andSoul” at the YHS/Summit ActivitiesCenter theatre May 25-26. Showtimesare 7 p.m. May 25 and 2 p.m. and 7p.m. May 26.

The performances include ballet,pointe, tap, lyrical, modern and char-acter dances, as well as athletic skillsand dance team routines

From theatrical scenes to classicalballet, this year’s production featuresnew choreographies and productionnumbers involving several classes andages. The Academy of Dance studentswill present a unique mixture of ex-treme contrasts in dance and musicstyles which will entertain and inspireaudiences of all ages. The perform-ances will showcase boys and girlsranging in age from three yearsthrough college from Yankton and thesurrounding area.

The Academy of Dance director isDorota Dannenbring.

The performances will feature sen-iors Courtney Clark, Nicole Doerr,Lindsay Ferris, Morgan Frick, DanielleGill, Megan Hiltunen, Lindsey Lien,Carrie Pospishil, Meghan Stefani andHeidi Steffen.

Dance WorkshopsSlated For Next Week

Guest dance instructors TimeraCunningham and Rob Massey will behosting a fun and exciting workshopfor dancers ages 7-adult on May 30-31at Judi’s Dance Studio, Yankton.

Students will receive professionalinstruction in ballet, jazz, lyrical, musi-cal theater and even an Adult Boot-camp.

Ms. Cunningham began her dancetraining at Beverly Rogers’ Academy ofDance in Kentucky. She went on tofurther her dance education at Okla-homa City University where she re-ceived her BFA in Dance Performance.She began working for RoyalCaribbean Cruise Lines after gradua-tion where she completed 8 contractsand toured more than 50 countries.She has also worked for Six Flags andhas been a part of the American SpiritTouring Company.

Mr. Massey was born in Sheffield,England and at age 16 was given a fullscholarship to attend the Northern Bal-let School in Manchester, England. Hereceived his NBS diploma after com-pleting a 3-year classical dancecourse. He performed with the Man-chester City Ballet and JazzgaloreDance Company before accepting ajob with Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines.

June 2 Museum EventLooking For Volunteers

The “Riverboats, Roads, and Rails”event at the Dakota Territorial Museumin Yankton is on June 2. The museumis looking for people to monitor and sitin some of the buildings during the dayso that kids can go past the barricadesand experience history.

They are looking for the followingassistance:

• Concession Stand (outsidestand): 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. (2 people)and 12:30 to 2 p.m. (2 people)

• Schoolhouse Monitor: 10 a.m.-noon, noon-2 p.m. and 2-4 p.m.

• Hovden Family Log Cabin: 10a.m.-noon, noon-2 p.m. and 2-4 p.m.

• Burlington Northern Railroad Ca-boose: 10 a.m.-noon, noon-2 p.m. and2-4 p.m.

Interested volunteers can contactthe museum at (605) 665-3898. Theywould really like to see people havefun with this and are welcome to dressin historic garb if they want, but it is notrequired. They will provide them withbasic information on the different loca-tions so prior knowledge is not re-quired.

Fr. Lange To PerformIn Yankton June 3

Fr. Tim Lange, a retired priest fromthe Archdiocese of Omaha who lives inYankton, will present two piano con-certs in Yankton on June 3. The 3 p.m.concert will be at Sacred Heart Churchand the 7 p.m. concert will be at St.Benedict Church. Mary Ann Wortmannwill be guest violinist.

Piano selections will include worksby Schubert, Liszt, Chopin, Debussyas well as semi-classical and contem-porary jazz compositions.

Donations will be accepted for thebenefit of the churches’ building fund.

There are days when you wish you were amagician.

If you were, all problems would be fixedwith a click of your fingers. No more thornypredicaments. No more half-baked ideas. Nomore unfinished business. One finger-pop andyou’d solve everything, quick and painless.

But Abracadabra is never that simple — oris it? In the new book “Snap: Seizing Your Aha!Moments” by Katherine Ramsland, you’ll seethat you shouldn’t worry about your fingers.It’s your mind that should be snapping.

You know how it goes: you spot a problemthat stymies you. Frustrated, you head forbed and sleep ... until your subconscious getsdone chewing on the problem and the solu-tion smacks you awake. Problem solved.

But is it really that easy?Ramsland says that it is, but it requires

some preparation and the implementation of

three basic steps: scanning, sifting, and solv-ing. Overall, it’s not what you think about theproblem, but how you think.

Scanning seems to involve an immersionin the issue itself, and a certain “bliss” or“flow” with the situation as a whole. You’re in-terested in the product or end result —maybe even passionate about it — so findinga solution becomes imperative. You feel likeyou’ve “slipped into the most comfortableclothes ... ever owned,” and you simply knoweverything is right. A certain amount of syn-chronicity even comes into play; you’re beingaligned for where you need to be to achieve apositive end result.

The best way to sift is to know as muchabout the issue as you can, and try to see itfrom new angles. Your “cognitive map” mayget in the way here, so move past habits andold paradigms. Look at the problem fromother angles. Keep your mind flexible. Har-ness your flow. Focus, but don’t despair ifyour mind wanders.
