Dear Flicks Supporter,During this glorious summer we at the Flicks office and our lovely promoters in the communities we serve, have been working hard to organise over 250 autumn season screenings in venues local to you. We have a huge range of films to suit all tastes and we hope that there are a few you would like to go and see.

Promoters and their communities choose which films they wish to screen in their venues, which is what gives Flicks its distinctive programming style. So this season you can still watch Captain Phillips, Sunshine on Leith and The Butler, or see some new ones such as Belle, Calvary and Before the Winter Chill, or even catch a classic such as All Quiet on the Western Front and Oh! What a Lovely War.

We have also been fortunate to receive some extra funding from the BFI, to help us screen more World Cinema and Best of British Films. So watch out for; The Selfish Giant, Twenty Feet From Stardom and Bright Days Ahead to name a few. These films are of a high standard but may not have had the big marketing budget of the Hollywood films.

Don’t want to miss a film? Need a reminder? As well as keeping this brochure to hand, you can sign up for a weekly email alert, which you’ll be sent once a week with details of films in your area. Sign up on our website: www.artsalive.co.uk – don’t worry, we DO NOT pass your email on to ANYONE ELSE!

Finally, we are grateful to our parent organisation Arts Alive, the rural touring scheme for Shropshire and Herefordshire. As I am sure you are aware, the cuts in government funding have been hitting arts and community organisations up and down the country. I am pleased to report that Arts Alive is still in existence despite these cuts and we are both working hard to ensure that we become resilient to future cuts – but this does mean we will become more reliant on individual donations and corporate donations. If you can help, please do – there is more information on the centre page of this brochure and on our website.

Thank you for supporting the Flicks in the Sticks network, we really appreciate it.

Best Wishes from Ian Kerry (Director) and Terri Jones – The Flicks Team

BelleDirector: Amma AsanteBritish Drama 104 mins, Cert 12aEmily Watson, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Matthew Goode, Miranda Richardson, Penelope Wilton

Belle is inspired by the true story of Dido Elizabeth Belle, the illegitimate mixed race daughter of a Royal Navy Admiral. Raised by her aristocratic great-uncle Lord Mansfield and his wife, Belle's lineage affords her certain privileges, yet the colour of her skin prevents her from fully participating in the traditions of her social standing. Left to wonder if she will ever find love, Belle falls for an idealistic young vicar's son bent on change who, with her help, shapes Lord Mansfield's role as Lord Chief Justice to end slavery in England.

Lad: a Yorkshire StoryDirector: Dan Hartley British Drama 96 mins, Cert 12aLiam Thomas, Bretten Lord, Nancy Clarkson, Richard Sails

When Tom Proctor's dad dies his world falls apart; his brother joins the army, his mum is threatened with eviction and Tom gets into trouble with the police. Tom's life is turned around however when he's paired up with park ranger Al Thorpe in this enchanting coming-of-age story set in the stunning Yorkshire Dales. This film was rated the highest by audiences at a recent festival.

TracksDirector: John Curran Australian Adventure/Biography/Drama 112 mins, Cert 12aMia Wasikowska, Adam Driver, Emma Booth

The spectacular, inhospitable Australian outback is the real star of this epic adventure which re-enacts Robyn Davidson’s 1500 mile solo trek from Ayers Rock to the Indian Ocean. With only her camels and faithful dog for company, cash-strapped Robyn begrudgingly agrees to have the journey documented and so becomes a global phenomenon thanks to National Geographic. A story of extraordinary determination and endlessly changing desert landscapes, like Lawrence of Arabia this is the sort of film that simply has to be seen on a big screen.

Please help us to keep entertaining you!

Last year in Shropshire and Herefordshire there were over 48,000 ‘bums on seats’ at over 900 Arts Alive performances, Flicks in the Sticks films or live satellite screenings.

We programme work for all ages, giving whole communities a chance to come together for social and cultural activity. Every event is subsidised. Volunteer promoters give over 5,000 hours of their time to make these events happen.

You told us:“It is wonderful to see such quality work on our rural doorstep and I am grateful to Arts Alive for continuing to offer such incredible work in such difficult arts funding times” Audience member

“A brilliant social service especially for people living in remote areas. It provides an opportunity for people to meet and something to look forward to” Audience member

“It would be very hard for a venue of our size to afford this without Arts Alive’s financial support” Promoter, Leintwardine

Please help us continue to bring top class performers and big screen films right to your doorstep. By giving as little as £3 per month, you can help us keep this service available to our small towns, villages and hamlets in Herefordshire and Shropshire.

Our new direct debit service is quick and easy: you can go to our website at artsalive.co.uk and click on the left menu item DONATE? use the QR code below or if it is easier, give us a ring on 01588 620883 (option 4).

THANK YOU!

Arts Alive is a registered charity number 1075794; if you are a UK tax payer your donation can be increased via gift aid.

Jersey BoysDirector: Clint EastwoodBiography/Drama/Musical 134 mins, Cert 15John Lloyd Young, Erich Bergen, Michael Lomenda, Vincent Piazza, Christopher Walken

Jersey Boys is a musical biography of the Four Seasons – the rise, the tough times and personal clashes, and the ultimate triumph of a group of friends whose music became symbolic of a generation. Far from a mere tribute concert (though it does include numbers from the popular Four Seasons songbook), Jersey Boys gets to the heart of the relationships at the center of the group-with a special focus on frontman Frankie Valli, the small kid with the big falsetto. Jersey Boys is a glimpse of the people behind a sound that has managed to endure for over four decades in the hearts of the public.

The LunchboxDirector: Ritesh BatraDrama/Romance in Hindi/English 104 mins, PGIrrfan Khan, Nimrat Kaur, Nawazuddin Siddiqui

A firm favourite at Borderlines Film Festival, this is a deftly paced comic romance that anyone can enjoy. Lonely young wife Ila is dissatisfied with her daily lot. Every day she prepares lunch for her neglectful husband to be delivered by the legendary Mumbai Lunchbox wallahs who deliver a million similar lunches to desks all over the city. Grouchy widowed accountant Sajaan is unsure what his imminent retirement will bring. But when Ila’s lunchbox goes astray, they build a gentle rapport via the notes they exchange. The humorous script reveals a wonderfully observed range of subtle emotions as their friendship blossoms.

Grow Your OwnDirector: Richard LaxtonBritish Comedy 96 mins, Cert PGBenedict Wong, Eddie Marsan, Philip Jackson, Omid Djalili, Diveen Henry

Grow Your Own is a gentle sweet-smelling comedy that is blessed with plenty of British charm. Set in the North of England, a bunch of grumpy old men spend their days nurturing their beloved allotments, while passing comment on their neighbours' vegetables. They're less than happy when a family of asylum seekers move in on their precious patch.

Flicks in the Sticks

AUTUMN 14Dear Flicks Supporter,During this glorious summer we at the Flicks office and our lovely promoters in the communities we serve, have been working hard to organise over 250 autumn season screenings in venues local to you.
