New Beginnings

Happy New Year! I hope that you all had a joyful and restful holiday with friends and family. As we move into 2017, I would like to welcome all the new members of our learning community, including Ms. Edwards our special needs teaching assistant who joined us in mid December and Ms. Kahnert our new ISSP teacher. At the beginning of each new year, many of us are prompted to make

a list of resolutions for the new year to change our behaviour, increase our personal success or improve some aspect of our daily life. Here at Meadowvale Village, we continue to embrace and implement learning opportunities for our students that help them become passionate, critical thinkers. We will be furthering our understanding of numeracy instruction, involving some staff working with Cathy Marks Krpan from the Ontario Institute of Studies in Education. As always, we appreciate your continued support and participation in your child's education which is of prime importance. One of Meadowvale Village Public School’s goals is to teach our students the importance of punctuality. When students

are late for school, they miss the introductory instructions for the day and interrupt lessons that are already in progress for

the children in the class. We are asking all parents for their cooperation in assisting their children to arrive at

school on time. The outside doors are locked at 9:10 a.m. Students arriving after this time are late and must enter the

school by the front door. The students are encouraged to be aware of the time that they must leave home in order to

arrive at school on time.

Safety is a top priority at our school so please remember to respect traffic signs and road markings around the school,

drive slowly and with caution on and near school property, use the Kiss'n'Ride area when dropping your child off at the

school (this is a supervised area that is designed to keep students safe), do not double park or do anything else to block

traffic or draw your child off the curb and into traffic.

Starting in January, Meadowvale Village will be participating in the Forest of Reading®, Canada's largest recreational reading program. This special reading program helps celebrate Canadian books, authors and illustrators. Students in kindergarten to grade 2 will be participating in the Blue Spruce program. They will be visiting the Library on a weekly basis in order to listen to and discuss the nominated Canadian picture books. Approximately 80 students, in grades 3 to 5 will be part of the Silver Birch Fiction or Silver Birch Express reading clubs. Students who have joined one of these clubs will have an opportunity to read a variety of Canadian fiction and non-fiction. In the spring students who have participated in these reading programs will have an opportunity to vote for their favourite books, as will students across the province. The winning authors will then receive a prestigious Forest of Reading award, bestowed upon them by the Ontario Library Association. The Forest of reading program is a wonderful way of promoting reading for enjoyment.

The grade 4's have been hitting the ice as part of the MVPS Legacy of Sports program. Through the TML Fundamentals program offered by the City of Mississauga, the grade 4 students are able to skate at Paul Coffey Arena in Malton with free skate and helmet rental as well as instruction. Each class will have 3 - hour long sessions on the ice which will surely lead to some new enthusiastic skaters. In continuing with the MVPS Legacy of Sports program, the grade five classes will once again be going skiing. The grade five classes are eagerly awaiting their trips to Horseshoe Resort outside of Barrie on January 31 and February 14. All students will receive professional ski lessons and enjoy a wide variety of terrain at their ability level.

We would like to publicly applaud all of the students who participated in the school choirs and

performed on the December 15th Holiday Concert here at Meadowvale Village. It was a cold and

blustery night, but our teachers and students presented a fantastic combination of music for

everyone to enjoy. Thank you so much for all of your hard work and dedication. We are all very

proud of the final product that took so much time and hard work to put together.
