A father’s legacy For Joseph Dodson, the pressures and responsibilities of parenthood felt compounded when he and his wife adopted a son. Dodson, a Bible professor, wonders if Jesus’ earthly father also struggled with doubts and fears. and fears. Scripture doesn’t say much about Joseph, but he clearly left Jesus “a significant legacy,” Dodson writes in Bible Study Magazine. Joseph obeyed God — despite the risk to his reputation — by marrying a pregnant woman. Joseph, a son of David, raised the Son of David as his very own. To protect his family he fled to Egypt, foreshadowing the “new exodus” of Jesus’ saving ministry. And Joseph heard neighbors mock Jesus as “the carpenter’s son.” “Joseph taught Jesus much more than woodworking,” Dodson writes. “He modeled for his adopted son how, for God’s glory, he must drink the Father’s
cup no matter the cost.”
Do you remember that beach music hit, “Summertime’s
Calling Me?” Is it really the summertime calling or is God
calling you this summer to be a good neighbor? Who is
your neighbor?
Luke 10: 25-37 Jesus replied and said, “A man was going
down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among robbers,
and they stripped him and beat him, and went away
leaving him half dead. And by chance a priest was going
down on that road, and when he saw him, he passed by
on the other side. Likewise, a Levite also, when he came
to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.
But a Samaritan, who was on a journey, came upon him;
and when he saw him, he felt compassion, and came to
him and bandaged up his wounds, pouring oil and wine
on them; and he put him on his own beast, and brought
him to an inn and took care of him. On the next day he
took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper and
said, Take care of him; and whatever more you spend,
when I return, I will repay you. Which of these three do
you think proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell
into the robbers’ hands?” And he said, “The one who
showed mercy toward him.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go
and do the same.”
I would suggest to you that for those of us who profess
to be followers of Christ and call the Outer Banks home
our neighbors include the thousands of vacationers that
come to spend a little time with us each summer.
I know the traffic can be crazy, we wait in line to check
out, and are delayed doing the things we take for
granted in the winter. But, we enjoy many services in
Dare County that simply would not be here and available
to us if it were not for these folks that wish they could be
here year round.
Many of us work directly in the tourist industry some of
us work in jobs that support the industry, and all of us
benefit from the taxes they pay that off-set what it
would cost us to live in what colonist, Ralph Lane called,
“The Goodliest Land Under the Cope of Heaven.”
The question is, do we sometimes act less than heavenly
when it is quite apparent the driver from Ohio does not
know where he or she is going? What about when they
slow down to take a long look at Jockey’s Ridge because
they have never seen anything like it, and we just need
to get to work? How Christ like are we when their
vehicle breaks down and they need help, when they take
our favorite spot on the beach, when the air conditioning
won’t keep up on a rainy day, or when their patience
runs short in the checkout line?
Churches in America send missionaries all over the world
to work in the field and share the Gospel of Jesus Christ,
while here on the Outer Banks, the harvest comes to us.
Millions of people come to our paradise on earth every
summer. Just think of the impact it would have on the
Kingdom of God if we made a habit of acting like Jesus
when we are around our guests. What would happen if
more of our vacationers heard about God’s grace and
the paradise He has prepared for us? Can you imagine
what it would be like if they took this Good News back to
Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Virginia,
Canada, Japan, and all of the places in the world our
visitors call home?
This summer don’t look at those who come to vacation
on the Outer Banks as an inconvenience or a nuisance.
Look at them as an opportunity to introduce God’s love
to someone who may need Jesus badly. They might, in
turn, take Him back home to others who are waiting to
hear the stories about who they met while on vacation in
paradise. Remember God does not take a vacation.
“Summertime’s Calling Me” or is that God’s voice I hear?

From the Church Historians
By Wayne and Nancy Gray
Early summer is the traditional time for weddings. The
Friday, June 25, 1954 edition of The Coastland Times ran
this announcement:
LINDA GASKILL TO WED ORMAN MANN
The engagement and approaching marriage of Miss
Linda Gaskill of Wanchese to Orman Mann of Manns
Harbor and Elizabeth City has been announced by her
parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Gaskill of Wanchese. The
wedding will take place at four o’clock Sunday
afternoon, July 4, in the Wanchese Methodist Church.
No invitations are being mailed, but all friends of the
couple are expected to attend.
Miss Gaskill was a member of the 1954 graduating
class of Manteo High School. Mr. Mann is the son of
Mr. and Mrs. Huff Mann of Manns Harbor. He is a
member of the U.S. Coast Guard and is stationed in
Elizabeth City.
Two years later, the August 24, 1956 edition had this
article:
MAVROMMATIS—TILLETT WEDDING LAST SUNDAY
The Wanchese Methodist Church was the scene
Sunday, August 19, at noon, immediately following
church services, of the wedding of Miss Esther Jewel
Tillett and Panayotis Demetrios Mavrommatis, the
congregation remaining to attend the ceremony.
The vows were spoken to Rev. C.L. Warren, pastor of
the church, of which the bride is a member. She was
given in marriage by Rev. C.W. Guthrie, a former pastor
of the church. White gladioli were used as decoration
before the altar.
The bride wore a street length blue dress with
matching accessories and a shoulder corsage of white
carnations. Her only attendant was Miss Sarah Alford of
Manteo, who wore a beige dress of eyelet linen with
matching accessories and a shoulder corsage of pink
carnations. Allen Lee Mann of Manteo was best man,
and Victor Daniels, Jr., was usher. The bride’s mother
wore an aqua dress with shoulder corsage of white
carnations.
Mrs. Mavrommatis is the daughter of Mrs. Carrie
Tillett and the late Guy Tillett of Wanchese. She
received her education in Manteo High School and East
Carolina College, Greenville. Mr. Mavrommatis is the
son of Demetrios and Assemina Mavrommatis of
Athens, Greece. He came to America as an exchange
student, first attending Presbyterian Junior College in
Maxton, and later graduating from N.C. State College in
Raleigh with a B.S. Degree. He taught one term at State
College and has been head of the mathematics
department in Manteo High Scholl for three years. The
couple will make their home in Wanchese.
Malachi 3:10 “ Bring the whole tithe into the
storehouse, so that there may be food in My house,
and test Me now in this,” says the Lord of hosts, “if
I will not open for you the windows of heaven and
pour out for you a blessing until it overflows.”
May was the month in which the windows of
heaven were opened and meat rained down! As
you may expect, meat is the most expensive and
coveted component to our meals. Jerry Stratton
started the flow of meat when he donated seven
quality hams. Jerry has taken up Lish’s mantle and
has made this ministry a priority. (Of course, he is
always giving to everyone. Have you ever left his
house empty-handed?)
Before May’s meal was ever cooked, we received
two more cases of rotisserie chicken from WalMart
through the Source Church Food Pantry. Then, I
got a text from Elisabeth at Beach Food Pantry.
Could we use over fifty pounds of beef? Could
we!? I feel like a meat hoarder.
Back to the ham…we paired it with vegetable
fried rice, using many bags of rice that had been
given to us. A plain yellow cake was served with a
gorgeous fruit salad that was primarily made of
North Carolina strawberries. Some pita chips from
Trio Restaurant in Kitty Hawk provided some
crunch.
The dynamo delivery team of Kiana and Bonny
had a nice experience when one of their recipients
wanted both of them to come into the house so
that she could thank them and tell them that she
was married in our church and felt connected to us.
Our delivery list, like life, is ever changing. Please
do not hesitate to suggest to us a person on
Roanoke Island that may benefit from a meal
prepared and delivered with the love of Jesus
Christ.
Pastor Ken’s idea of sending along our church
newsletter was right on target. We’ve heard a lot
of positive feedback on that.
We served 193 meals at $.76 per person with 9
children and 16 adult volunteers.
Warmer weather is
here and His KREW
is so excited! We
have had nights full
of fun, fellowship,
and Jesus! We had a “wheels night” on one of the
first nice nights of the month. Each child brought a
bike, a scooter, or some other rideable toy. They
love wheels’
nights! And it’s
so great to
hear all the
people of
Wanchese
honk and wave
at them when
they see them
all together in
the front
parking lot. We
live in such a wonderful community!
Ginger Shackelford came out one Friday night and talked to the children about community and church family. Her story is such a powerful testimony of
perseverance, strength, and, most of all, faith. We were so happy and thankful that she was able to spend some time with our youth.
On Mother’s Day the kids passed out beautiful carnations to all the women of our church. We are so thankful for our mothers, aunts, church moms, and ALL the women who take part in our lives daily!
The older kids have begun taking a confirmation class with Pastor Ken and Mrs. Paula during His KREW on Friday night. We’ve had a few extra ladies volunteer to be there as well. I can’t wait to see them begin their lives as active Christians and members of our church.
Thank you to all the wonderful people who give their time to the kids of our church and community. We appreciate everything you do for them!
HAITI MISSION The last trip to Haiti was November 2018. We finished up building the extra pews for
the church in Gue-don, and now we've been asked to build some for a church in the mountains who use make-shift benches. BUT! We're going to need help and this is where YOU come in. We need people and money to build these pews. If you or someone you know would like to go, please contact me. If you can't go and would still like to be a part of this project, you can help with a donation made out to Bethany UMC. In the memo write "Haiti Pews.” If you've ever wanted to be part of a mission trip, to help God's people, now is your chance! You can't even imagine just how Blessed you'll feel once you return home from a trip like this. This is what keeps me going back. The Haitian people take really good care of us, feed us well, and our safety is their number one concern. We worship in a Haitian church on Sunday, and usually use one day to go somewhere to see other places. This invitation is open to male and female, young and old. For more information, contact Craig Parker @ [email protected] or call me @ 252 423 0384. The trip will be October 29- November 6, 2019.
The Pre-Schoolers have been learning how to
spell and write their first and last names. They have
been doing a very good job.
The Preschoolers who will be going to Kindergarten this fall went to Manteo Elementary School on Tuesday, April 23rd. The parents went with the children. Callan Rhoads, Gabe
Scarborough, Macon Pearce, and Pierce Boyd will be going to Kindergarten this fall. Callan Rhoads will be going to the Kitty Hawk Elementary School. Gabe Scarborough, Macon Pearce, and Pierce Boyd will be going to Manteo Elementary School. Amanda Songer took the Preschoolers to look at the school. She took them to her office first. Next, she took the Preschoolers to the lunch room.
She showed them how they would get lunch and where their tables would be. After seeing the lunch
room, Amanda Songer let the Preschoolers go to the Kindergarten teacher, Michelle Albright. The Preschoolers sat on the floor with the kindergarteners. The teacher showed the
Preschoolers what they will do next year. The kindergarten children were very good to the Preschoolers. The Preschoolers went to the playground. They played on the slides, the swings, and other toys. Amanda took the Preschoolers to
the gym and then to the
library. She told the Preschoolers what they would do next year in the library. Amanda took the Preschoolers to the music room. The children in the music room sang a special song to the Preschoolers. Amanda said the Preschoolers were very good. The Preschoolers went to the Point Harbor Strawberry patch on Tuesday, May 7th. Eleven of the Preschoolers with their parents and grandparents picked the strawberries. Everyone enjoyed picking the strawberries. The Preschoolers were great. James and Lydia enjoyed having the Preschoolers pick the strawberries.
