DETER JONES (NRM) last week waswrong about "Play It Cool". After

seeing a special pre-release of Billy Fury'sfirst starring film I am convinced that thefilm should prove a great success bothcommercially and artistically for Billy.

He has the natural ability to com-municate with his audience and this isessential for any aspiring actor. He alsohas personal magnetism much the sameas Elvis Presley. In fact films could welldo for Billy what they have done forElvis.

The story line does not demand anygreat acting feats but Billy seems quiteat home in front of the cameras and ifaudience reaction is anything to go byhe should be feeling very pleased withhimself.

SINCEMark's "Image of a Girl" came

out, my daughter had been collect-ing photos of him, seeing him in variousshows and had got Isis autograph, andI must say I thought he was a far cryfrom the usual pop singers of this dayand age -a very refreshing change.

Then last summer, while on holidaywith my daughter on the south coast Imet him for the first time. We werecoming back from the beach looking likescarecrows, covered in sun -tan oil andwith our hair all over the place afterswimming, and I saw this boy on theother side of the street looking our way.His face was very familiar to me and Ithought that he must be Mark's double,as Mark was meant to be in Londonworking.

A couple of minutes later, my daughterwas tapped on the shoulder and someonesaid: "What do you think you're doingwalking past me without saying hello ?"Well from the look on her face - Ithought she was going to pass out. Itwas amazing -he had remembered herface and name after having been intro-duced to probably thousands of peoplesince he had met her. I was introducedto him and we all chatted for some timeas if we had known each other for years.

Now I can safely say that Markdefinitely has two staunch fans in ourhouse. READERA. L. Warren comments that

songwriters should stop poachingmaterial. I agree - and would gofurther and ask how do the so-calledsongwriters even attain publication oftheir work?

In an investigation by myself over thepast three years, I have found that 95per cent of the songs published fall in agroup called "Who You Know". Thatgroup includes A and R managers, song-writers with their own publishing com-panies, members of the backing groupon the discs, personal managers -andfriends and relations of stars andrecording and publishing companies.

So how does anyone else get a numberpublished? It seems to me a sheer wasteof time and energy for an amateur tobother. I have heard, and written, farsuperior songs than have been in theTop Ten in the last few years.

It's not only on the writing side that"Who You Know" applies. Seventy percent of all artists rely in the first instanceon who they knew for the- big break.People say no one writes good songsthese days. Rubbish! And that there is

plenty of room at the top for talent.Rubbish.

EMIhave just released a batch of

recorded tapes to enliven a smallmarket in the new idea. Mr. Acker andthe boys repeat their Trad success fromthe old Columbia LP (33SX.1248) withall the usual brashness and spirit. Theband is in the same danger of monotonyof style as Barber, Ball and company,but at least has the one virtue of healthybonhomie. All good vintage jazz hadthe same ingredient . . . which is oneup for Acker.

Despite the colourful case and therecording quality, I am not convincedthat tape will succeed over disc. It is stillmuch easier to put a record on a turn-table, even with the nuisance of thechanger gadgetry, than to wind and re-wind a commercial tape. Or maybe thisis just another case of my approachingyears and increasing laziness.

JELLY ROLL MORTON'S IndianSummer came towards the end of

the thirties with some varied recordingsfor Commodore (which included a batchof brilliant and moving piano solos), amarathon session with Alan Lomax forthe Library of Congress and one lastdate for RCA -Victor which some criticsare inclined to dismiss as slanted towardsa New Orleans revival rather thantowards Morton as a band leader.

These examples from the Victor sessionreveal, however, yet another fine batchof sides which are clearly inspired bythe leader. Morton repeats his pianosolo and vocal COmmodore Blues,"Don't You Leave Me Here" with anincreased impact, while the familiar"Climax Rag" and "West End Blues"are classic jazz recordings by the NewOrleans Jazzmen.

"Bailin' the Jack", brought to the HitParade by Danny Kaye, has a swingingvocal by Mr. Jelly Lord. This is aglorious EP which reminds us once againof the genius of the paranoiac Jelly Roll.

counter -rumour, denial, counter -denial . . . and finally the bouncyyoung man, who just can't helpbeing controversial every time heopens his mouth, made up hismind.

Just when everybody said hewas certain to join Frank Sinatraat Reprise.

At 24, Darin was worth all thechat. Not only is he the hardest -working young man in the business-but he is, potentially, the mosttalented.

Capitol, whooping with joy, said:"Bobby is the kind of recordingartist we like best. He is far morethan a young singer who has hadseveral hits. His recording careerwill be advanced far beyond hisaccomplishments of the past fewyears by his great versatility andwide range of talents.

BOONE CHANGES STYLE AGAINIT took a bit of the old rock 'n'

roll, a screaming female, and avoice that takes you back to thesordid cartoon theatres to put PatBoone just where he is in thecharts.

"I'm lust a rock 'n' roll singer", hesaid in 1956. That was before any-one had heard of Presley - whenBoone's "Ain't That A Shame" wasriding high, and when his careerwas on the uprade.

That was six years ago. Pat is still on

the upgrade but only just. In themeanwhile his name has been spokenof in the same breath as Bill Haleyand Little Richard, So called "has-beens".

After long dreary, spells of flop recordsand puritan meanderings Pat sold amilli° ncopies of a disc called"Moody River".

The theme of the dist was basicallydeath by drowning. Part had brokenhis "keep out sin and death" routineand had found it worthwhile.

To the tune of making the name of"Boone" mean something once more.Not just some silver lettering on ablack label on a four-year old disc."We told you so" everyone said. "Wetold you that you should havebranched out." Pat answered themby bringing out three good whole-some discs, all of which sold well.They were "Big Cold Wind","Johnny Will", and "1'11 See You InMy Dreams".

TAPEREDBut the sales tapered off somewhat. So

Pat's recording managers had to lookfor something new, They found it inthe shape of a mouse, a few incheshigh who wears a sombrero andmoves faster than Elvis Presleyrecords.

They also found someone who has beenentertaining kiddies for countlessyears under almost every name buthis own.

His name was Mel Blanc but he is bet-ter known as Bugs Bunny, TweetyPie, Sylvester, and of course SpeedyGonzales.

He sang somewrote in foralso the crymaiden.

Song originally came from the Philip-pines and in an abbreviated form wasa hit for a gent called David Dante.

Without Mel Blanc. of course. Melhimself has been in the charts with"Woody Woodpecker" and "I Tawt ITaw A Puddy Tat". That makes twodisc stars on "Speedy Gonzales" forthe price of one, or if you count theMexican maiden, three.

So now Pat has another big hit on hishands. To get it, he has had to changehis style once more. Back in fact tohis old rock style, Whether or notPat will keep to it we don't know.We doubt it.

For suddenly the most stick-in-the-mudperformer has become the mostchangeable.

FABIAN GETSEXPERIENCE

FABIAN is currently gaining "valuableacting experience" in summer stock

in America, on a six -week tour in "JohnLoves Mary", in which he takes a leadingrole.

And he has been set to co-star with"veteran" James Stewart in 20th Century -Fox's "Take Her She's Mine", whichis based on the Broadway show of thesame name.

This will be Fabian's first picture sincesigning his new bigger -terms, bigger -guarantee contract with 20th Century.

Straight from that, he goes on totwo albums for autumn release. ByAugust 2, he will be at the Flamingo,Las Vegas, where they are alreadyrepainting the "Standing Room Only"notices.

It certainly looks as if he won'tbe visiting Britain again for a long,long time.

TOUGHDarin had a tough childhood. He

packed more living into his firsttwenty years than most folk do in alife -time. He is blatantly ruthless,basically self-confident, and happy inproving to those who so violentlyattacked him early on that he is (a)making a fortune and (b) carving anunviolable place for himself at thetop.

All we can add is this: Slow down,Bobby Darin. Don't knock yourself.You've proved your point in justabout every field of the business.

FIRST TIME FOR

FRANKIEFRANKIE VAUGHAN begins his first

season in West End cabaret at "TalkOf The Town" next Monday, replacingLisa Kirk, American songstress, in theBernard Delfont production.

Though this is a "first time" forFrankie in Britain, he has tackledseveral top cabaret spots in Americawith great success. He is the only Britishperformer to top the bill at New York's"Copacabana"-and his "Dunes", LasVegas, season was so successful that hewas booked for each of the two followingyears.

On his recent provincial tour, Frankieused a special instrumental group-andthey will be with him at "Talk Of TheTown". Musical director Basil Tait"hand-picked" the line-up of trombone,trumpet, baritone saxophone, drums, bassand guitar, with Basil on piano.

Frank will open his cabaret act witha new number specially written for himby Bryan Blackburn, but will later in-clude many of his best-known has.

a likely hit record had to stay putin Britain in order to get the maxi-mum plugs on television. No singer,no plugs-that was the general rule.

Nowadays, a singer can be off film-ing on the Continent, as is JOHNLEYTON, and still get his visual and.audial " exposure " on television.

Before B.V.? Before Visimotion.This is the exciting new cartoon pro-

cess worked on by Robert StigwoodAssociates - Mr. Stigwood is John'smanager.

To do a cartoon on the style of WaltDisney costs something like £.1,000 a

minute, and takes umpteen differentdrawings for every five seconds. Visi-motion gives all the impression of ani-mated movement at a fraction of thecost.

Say something like £300 to produce acartoon of John Leyton singing his latestsingle release, "Down the River Nile,"which is out on the HMV label thisweek.

I watched a test run-through of theprocess-the process which will be usedto plug the disc on shows like ThankYour Lucky Stars," etc. John's voicecomes through loud and strong and, onscreen, is an often amusing, always in-teresting portrayal in line pictures of thescene about which he sings.

The principle basically is using modelfigures with a magnetic device behindthese " props " which creates themovements. At present, the magnets areused manually, but eventually they willbe developed electronically.

Visimotion was originally announceda few months ago-and claimed then asbeing a way of boosting a song -star inhis absence.

Since then, the possibilities have grownenormously. It can add a new interestto diagrams, maps, weather charts andso on for television. For educationalprogrammes, too.- Even a sales con-ference can be enlivened by use of theprocess. And it can be used in blackand white or colour.

The immediate step. though, will befor John Leyton and his " Down theRiver Nile."

'GOSPEL IS VERY BIG BUSINESS'MOST people in Britain think of

DELLA REESE as a Gospel singer.But the truth is that she'll sing ANY-THING, working on the theory: "If Ising all sorts, there's just got to be some-thing that everybody will dig".

Dellareese Taliaferro, born in Detroit,stands out as one of the most importantAmerican stars most consistently over-looked by British audiences. A dynamicsort of girl, tall and statuesque, withpeculiarly expressive eyes, she fair bel-lows her way into the American HitParade but remains on the outskirts inBritain.

first love. She sang in churches at the ageof five and listeners at that time bearwitness to her explosive vocal talents.

Mahalia Jackson "discovered" her andshe sang with the Jackson troupe for fiveyears. At college, Della formed her owngroup, the Meditation Singers-and tothis day, when big -sellers are her habit,she still hies herself off for a Gospeltour with the group . . . "whenever Iget lonesome for the church music".

And, in any case, Gospel music, sungin night-clubs, is extremely big businessin the States right now.

TELERECORDING

Della flew into London last week tofilm a TV show called "West End"-andit was recorded on July 25 and likely tobe screened during October or Novem-ber. And right from that stint, Della flewback to Las Vegas to star in cabaret atthe Flamingo.

Lee Magid, her manager, came withher-and he also manages Al Hibbler.For a time, Della sang with ErskineHawkins' band and her first disc hitwas "And That Reminds Me".

It was around the summer of 1959 that

Della signed a long-term contract withHugo and Luigi, of RCA -Victor. Thefirst release was "Don't You Know",based on Musetta's waltz in Puccini's"La Boheme" It topped the AmericanHit Parade.

But we didn't hear it here, for copy-right reasons. There's a chance, saidDella, that the British public might hearit in 25 years' time.

Hugo and Luigi double -talked thequote: "Della uses words in the sameway as a musician uses an instrument.She blends, bites and projects the lyricsof a song in a way no other artist cand o " .

Della has had a tough sort of life. Herfather died, then her mother died andshe just had to earn as much money aspossible. For a time, she was a taxi-driver but all the time she sang. MostlyGospel singing....

"I've known the pangs of realhunger", she said. "I've known all aboutsleeping rough. But I've worked on mycareer. Every step has been a forwardone. Honestly, I put so much into itthat I knew I had to get somewhere. Abattering ram, that's me".

Right now, Della is one of the busiest

cabaret artists in America. Four or fivetimes a year she goes to the Flamingo,Las Vegas, and she has had four seasonsat the Copacabana, in New York. Plustrips to the Cocoan:t Grove in Holly-wood.

Not so long ago, she completed a tourof the States in "),, Portrait of DellaReese-From the Gospel to the Blues".The Meditation Singers were with her.

Why has she not really registered onsingle releases here? I'd say because shehas that "quality" tag. There's somethingabout that "quality" tag that takes abit of living down in the British record-ing scene. Getting from the "minority"to the "majority" is a long, long job.

There's a stack of Reese material ondisc for those who'd like to startdigging her. And coming up in Novem-ber is a new album called "Della OnStage", which was recorded before aspecially invited audience in New York'sWebster Hall.

For me, Della Reese is a fabulous,exciting, warm, expressive, dynamic, ex-plosive, brilliant, versatile, delightful,marvellous singer. Or, shortly: I digDella.

MR. BAMONG the record releases this week

appears one by Mr. Billy Eckstine.If you have just this week begun col-lecting records then you will, in all prob-ability, not have heard of the gentleman.

But "Mr. B." as his friends call him,won't mind in the slightest the fact thatyou don't know him. You see he is oneof those fortunate artists who are alreadywell established-established in fact be-fore the Rock set in.

Oh he's for the old folks you mightsay-not so, not so. Billy Eckstine hasa habit of appearing in the best sellingcharts every so often . . . and usuallywith a mighty big hit.

He is not a singer who will rush into arecording studio at every opportunity sothat he can have a constant stream ofrecords available to the public. He turnsout the occasional LP, when the time isripe and the idea interesting, and evenmore occasionally he waxes a single-when the material is right.

This week's release couldn't be a moreright title to my way of thinking. It's anoldie titled "Guilty" and it must surelybe Billy's best record since his last smashhit "Gigi".

The coupling presents Mr. Eckstine,composer, with a song he calls "I WantTo Talk About You". This could provepopular too.

By now you may have guessed that Iam in favour of Mr. Billy Eckstine as anartist. Well, to tell the truth I'm evenmore in favour of him as a person.

He's not an easy person to know as afriend. He doesn't believe in friendshipat first sight-he much prefers to get toknow a person first. Then, should friend -

PROFESSIONALship develop, you won't find a truerfriend on earth.

I count myself extremely fortunate inbeing on personal terms of friendshipwith this warm and most talented per-sonality.

It is therefore natural that I shouldtend to favour his every record-but Iwouldn't pass on my feelings to myreaders unless I felt certain the productwas worthy of their attention.

And this is in fact most worthy. It isa record which could easily enter the

One point which is outstanding aboutany Eckstine performance is the sheerprofessionalism of the whole thing-butit is not a cold, clinical professionalism,rather it is a warm intimate knowledgeof music springing from B's jazz back-ground.

Yes, having a background of jazzmusician and singer does tend to helpone turn in a good job with a song.More especially if the song is of topquality. And when confronted with justsuch a song Mr. Eckstine rises mag-nificently to the occasion and you cansense his voice revelling in the melody.

The career of this artist began some

twenty years back when Ole was a teen-ager vocalist with the top band led bypianist Earl Hines. A few years there and"B" went solo for a time before he wasurged to form his own band-remem-ber this was in the heyday of the bigband era and music callej Swing.

He did indeed form this band and itis still talked about reverently bymusicians today. Girl vocalist was SarahVaughan and the list of instrumentalistsreads like a who's who in modern jazz-Charlie Parker, Dizzys Gillespie, ArtBlakey, Miles Davis, Lucky Thompson,Fats Navarro and O. naRe Ammons werebut a few. 4

Then it was back to solo stardom anda succession of hits which rocketedBilly to international stardom anda full date book of stage, cabaret, tele-vision and radio bookings throughoutthe world.

Billy is still sought after for similarbookings but nowadays he tells hismanager-"leave me some time forgolf!"

Yes, in common with many of the topstars "B" is a golf addict-and, this Iknow to my cost on several occasions, heplays to professional standards too.

But golf or not music is still his firstlove and whenever we meet the con-versation inevitably turns to music andour mutual likes, dislikes and acquain-tances and friends within that sphere....

Just like when people are discussingtop performers they inevitably get aroundto mentioning the name of Billy Eckstine. . . a truly outstanding singer of goodsongs with an appeal which encompassesthe very young right through every agegroup to the grandest or grandinornersand fathers.

Help Nat?HOW come NAT COLE'S "Let There

Be Love" was issued here as asingle when it was only on LP inAmerica? Answer: Because someoneon the German end of "Two WayFamily Favourites" wanted it played.The American LP was rushed to theBBC from the Capitol office in Lon-don, the disc was played over theair . . . and the requests for releasepoured in.

Now the disc has bounded up toNo. 25 in the Top Fifty. The LP willbe released in October.

Why, has Nat King Cole, a singerwho has observed the revolu-tion, weathered the storm of therock and roll age, suddenly startedmaking records that get into thecharts?

Comeback is perhaps too silly aword to use about Nat whose aver-age disc sales clock up to over sevenmillion a year, but no doubt aboutit, "Let There Be Love" has boundedup the charts.

Part of the reason may lie in the suc-oess of ... Danny Wiffiams:

Danny is now accepted by the recordbuying, concert visiting public of thiscountry as a major artist. And rightlyso.

I believe that the Nat Cole voice andthe Williams voice - and the Mathisvoice-are all remarkably similar. 1

don't mean they are all from the samemould, but they are all from the samefactory.

Nat must feel at home on his currenthit- his last one was "Let True LoveBegin"-because a sizeable amount ofthe disc is taken up with George Shear-ing's sparkling piano work. (Shearingof late has been used more and morefor backing singers-last year he turnedin a swinging set of tunes with PeggyLee) and obviously it pays off.

sionally feels the urge to get back againbehind a keyboard.

It was in fact, back in the late thirtieswhen Nat was playing piano in a NewYork club, that he became, accidentally,a singer.

Previously Nat was known only as anoccasional member of Lionel Hamp-ton's Quintet. Booked into the club, hedecided that to break the monotony ofpiano, piano, piano all night long, hemight as well try a song or two. Hedid.

Nat played the first half and in theinterval the manager came and handedhim his notice, "We don't want singers-especially bad ones," was his remarkfor posterity.

But Nat persevered and became quitefamous in a small way as jazz pianistand singer of jazzy songs that fitted hisriffy style.

Ballads he had never attempted untilhe recorded in June 1940 a tune called"Sweet Lorraine" which was prettydefinitely a ballad. This paved the wayfor Nat with disc jockeys and the publicas a ballad singer and he looked set fora hit disc.

However it didn't happen-but thewar did, and the record companies hadto cut down in production. This meantthat they concentrated on the very bignames. And in those days they includedBing Crosby, the Andrews Sisters,Woody Herman and Guy Lombardo.Not Mr. Cole.

It wasn't until the war ended hechanged companies, that he had his firstbig hit, "Nature Boy", That started theclimb. Nat became a member of the topbrass of ballad singers. Nat earnsaround 10,000 dollars a week and runsa corporation with singer Harry Bela-fonte to produce material for Negroartists.

ALL ALONE ACKERINTO the Top Fifty this week comes "Gotta See Baby Tonight", a shuffle

rhythm item by Mr. Acker Bilk. Meanwhile his "Stranger On TheShore" celebrates its 38th week in the Top 20 by moving up one place.

And over in America, "Above The Stars", Acker's with -strings -attachedfollow up to "Stranger" makes its appearance in the American Top Fifty.

Over in the LP charts Acker's also away-" Stranger On The Shore " atNo. 8. In the best selling EPs "Four Hits And A Mr." is at No. 5.

It's the American success that isimpressing the men behind Acker Bilk.They expect it to go higher as the film"The Wonderful World Of The BroilersGrimm" goes round the American cir-cuits because the tune comes from thefilm.

Manager David Bilk told me that plansare going ahead to send Acker toAmerica in September this year. But hewon't be travelling with his ParamountJazzmen. They will stay behind whileAcker does solo television and personala ppearances.

RUMOUR"But there is no truth in the rumour

that Acker will be giving up the bandto go completely solo," added David."That would be ridiculous.

"Possibly Leon Young, the man whodirected the string section, will go toAmerica with him but that hasn't beensettled.

"We've been building up the image ofAcker on his own for some time now.He has done appearances on the variousBBC shows-'Go Man Go', 'Juke BoxJury', `Billy Cotton Band Show', etc.-just by himself and we think this is agood thing. But Acker will always havea band with him and a jazz band, nota string ensemble."

America, amazed at the success ofAcker with strings, have lost no time injumping in with other artists based onfamiliar lines. Perhaps the strangest isthe release of a clarinet with strings discby Archie Semple, who plays with theAlex Welsh jazz band.

But despite the competition front fiveversions of "Stranger" in America-allvocal ones-and two other versions of"Above The Stars" by Don Costa andCaesar Giovanni, it's Mr. Bilk who isthe top coin puller.

Atco in America has just released hissecond LP to tie in with "Above TheStars". Again it is with the Leon YoungString Chorale and titled "Above TheStars and other Romantic Fancies ".Included in the set are "MoonlightBecomes You", "Soft Sands" and"When You Smile".

It's already become a Cashbox PopularPick Of The Week.

But plans are afoot to release someearly Acker Bilk sides on Frank Sinatra'slabel, Reprise.

Tentative title is-"Stranger NoMore" which just about sums up Ackerin America.

BRITISH TEAMTHE British team for this year's

European Song Contest at theCasino Knokke Le Zoute, Belgium,very nearly had the opportunity of alifetime - an hour long televisionshow beamed out on the Eurovisionnetwork.

It happened when Holland withdrewfrom the contest in protest against thewide margin of over 80 points betweenthe Dutch and the Belgium teams afterSaturday's heat.

The following day Holland were dueto meet England.

All through the morning, the Dutchteam manager, Lou Van Rees, tried toget the judges to reconsider theirdecision.

The judges refused and the Britishteam were asked to start hurriedrehearsals to add an extra half hour totheir scheduled appearance.

However at the last moment Hollandagreed to appear but not to competeagainst Britain. They also insisted thatthe 15 strong judging panel leave thehall while they appeared.

The Dutch team said they would notappear next year and the Contestorganisers said there would be no changein the rules.

The British team this year - last year'steam won the competition - were 23points ahead of the other competingcountries, France, Belgium, Germany andItaly at press time but with two moreheats to go won't know if they arc inthe finals until later.

They beat Belgium on Friday by anarrow margin, 14 points, and theirappearance on Sunday night showedthat they had conquered the slight ner-vousness that marred their first appear-ance.

Colin Day and David MacBeth alter-nate in opening and closing the team'sprogramme with Anita Harris, ChristineCampbell and Noel Harrison. This year'squintet is more of a team and all received

strong applause for their numbers -mainly standards and quality songs.

If they win they all share in the £1,420first prize.

VINCE TAYLOR - once theAngry Young Man of Britain's

beat singers, now a £450 a night suc-cess in Europe-may be in line for afilm part . . . the lead in "The ElvisPresley Story", Vince as Elvis.

He told me this last week whenappearing at the Casino here, one ofEurope's top cabaret spots andgambling haunts.

And he also told the strange storyof his climb to fame on the Con-tinent, using as props all-over blackleather, black gloves, a gold medal-lion and an act that features muchanatomical shaking, using the micro-phone as a sparring partner and theoccasional rioting teenagers.

All very familiar?It should be. It is raw vintage rock

and roll that died out in this countryabout three years ago.

But it has taken hold very firmly withthe French teenagers and in just over ayear Vince Taylor, a singer who meantvirtually nothing in England, has beenpromoted to the hierarchy of the return -to -the -rock -age.

thing from between three to sixthousand. Why, man, I've even playedto a packed bullring in Spain.

"But the big thing in the future will bea couple of films. One is certain-I'llappear with George Chakaris, the star of'West Side Story' later this year, prob-

"At first the film company weregoing to use either Rick Nelson orFabian in the part but decidedagainst it. They figured that peoplewouldn't accept them in the part-they'd just think of them as Fabianor Rick, not Elvis.

"So they decided to use someonemore or less unknown-which is mein America. There are lots of peoplewho can sing like Elvis but theydon't know how to do the move-ments.

"I'm known for my movementsbecause I saw.Elvis right back in theearly days."

He wants to return but not for abouttwo years and preferably with either arecord or a film to bolster his case.

His memories of England are tingedwith bitterness: "The kids liked it but Icouldn't get across to the damn agents.They didn't like me."

CONTEMPORARY blues singing stillexists in the States, particularly in

the Southern rural areas-and in citieslike Chicago where the large Negropopulation still demands their own kindof music despite the inroads that Rock,modern jazz and the electric organ havemade on their affections.

Armand "Jump" Jackson, whorecorded this modern blues session forEsquire, is the uncrowned chief of bluesalong the South Side and when I wasstaying in Chicago I was told that, if Iwanted to find blues along 63rd Street

1 would have to ring Jump. This is justthe kind of music many rural and urban-ised American Negros prefer in 1962. Ithasn't the real folky fire and force ofthe oldtimers like Blind Lemmon Jeffer-son, Sonny Terry or Barbecue Bob, butone has to remember that tastes changeand the performances of really authenticblues artists must echo the contemporaryscene and the demands of their ownparticular audiences.

This recording does that-and who arewe to carp ? It belongs to the MuddyWaters, Howling Wolf, Chuck Berry,Jimmy Reed school, and there is a lot tobe said for the last of the blues singers.Given another 20 years and we may behunting up THEIR discs for fancy pricestoo.

There are certain areas on the con-tinent-mainly in France-where Vincecannot visit because of the effect thatcombined microphone twirling, rubber -leg shaking, pelvic wriggles, shruggingshoulders, padded knees, echo chambercontrolled voice, blue red lighting, overamplified sound, thudding beat, andplain elemental raw rock singing produceon the flower like minds of the Con-tinental teenagers.

The first time Vince appeared inFrance, in Paris at the Olympia MusicHall there was a riot. The appearancewas accidental-"I went along with mygroup, the Playboys, more or less forthe ride. Wee Willie Harris was on a bigbill of British rock stars and the pro-moter just asked me to go on. I think Isang for round about ten quid but Iclosed the bill.

"The next thing that happened was theriot. They went berserk."

This accidental appearance started thetrail for Vince. He was signed up andmade 13 songs at one go for a Frenchdisc company, Barclay Records.

"People had read about me, but hadn'theard me. The thing was to get the discsout as fast as possible. They wereterrible. I don't think the French canreally make this kind of disc yet, notgood commercial rock discs. It's likeEngland was four or five years ago. NowEngland makes fabulous discs....

The Casino where Vince and his Play-boys appeared - s a m ple numbers:"Trouble" (Elvis number), "TwentyFlight Rock" (Eddie Cochran), "What'dI Say" (Ray Charles)-has previouslyfeatured artists like Juliette Greco, PetulaClark, Charles Trenet. I report theaudience liked Vince although as he saidthey weren't his usual type of audience.

The Playboys, Bobby Clark (drums, exMarty Wilde), Tony Harvey (lead guitar,ex Nero and the Gladiators), BobSteel (rhythm guitar) and Johnny Vance(bass guitar), all playd with a detachedattitude and at times seemed to be play-ing for their own pure and simplepleasure.

Vince's skull ring glistened in the spot-light. "You've got to have somethingthere to make the hands stand out. Mostimportant."

When he finished it was another £470in his pocket. The Playboys get astraight scale of £50 a week, with extrafor television, radio and records.

Which is more than he used to get inthe Soho joints and scout halls in thedepths of Cornwall back in the old days,when the knife was in his back.

Note: Vince's microphone undergoesgreat strain as it's whirled and thrownTherefore it's protected-k also has anecho chamber attached.

The Belgian engineers at Knokkelooked most hurt when their micro-phones were rejected by Vince. Thesemicrophones were used to beam out thesound all over Europe.

But they weren't good enough forVince Taylor. "Useless-they'd crack upin two minutes."

FUNNY, PECULIAR AND

NON -COMIC COMEDYLOVE they say makes the world go

round. Laughter it seems doesn'teven go around the world.

Especially when it comes to so-calledcomedy records. A less internationalthing you could hardly find. But surelyyou argue, comedy spans all barriers.Well here's news . . it doesn't.

Only two British discs have been hitsin the States which can be called"funny".. They were Charlie Drake's"Boomerang" and Lonnie's "ChewingGum". Mike Sarne's "Come Outside"isn't even starting to move over thereyet. Despite the ads and plugs that ithas had. In fact it could even repeat thefailure of Lonnie's "My Old Man's ADustman" which was a famous flopStateside.

Over there though they seem to gomore for a different type of humour.More mickey-taking like.

Apart from "Speedy Gonzalves" whichis little more than a gimmicky Rock 'n'Roll disc, there are precious few comedydiscs in the U.S. top 150.

Things like " Little Red RentedRowboat " by Joe Dowell, and " Mary'sLittle Lamb" by James Darren aren'treally selling on their comedy value, buton their musical value.

Others include two send-ups of theBen Casey hit. They are "Dr. BenBasey" by Mickey Shorr and The Cutups,and "Ben Crazy" by Dicky Goodmanand Dr. I. M. III.

There's not much chance of either ofthese two being released - let alonemaking the charts.

Then there's "My Daddy Is President"by Little Jo -Ann which has been bannedin several States.

But the other disc which does standa chance of making the grade is called"Ahab The Arab" by Ray Stevens, andit is at No. 4 in "Cashbox" this week.A cover version of the number has beenwaxed by dee-jay Jimmy Saville forDecca and both versions are expected to

be released soon. You might rememberRay for his previous effort, the mammothtitled "Jeremiah Peabody's Poly Unsatu-rated Quick Dissolving Fast ActingPleasant Tasting Green And PurplePills".

Believe it or not, there have beendiscs which have had longer titles thanthis.

And to torment all readers here's oneof them, "Green With Envy, PurpleWith Passion, White With Anger, ScarletWith Fever, What Were You Doin' toHis Arms Last Night Blues". Julie Raynedared to sing and record it, and it soldquite well. But the lyric wasn't funny,only the title . .. And it's the lyric thatdecides whether a disc is a comedyrecord or not.

Many records are funny unintention-ally ... And we don't call these comedyrecords.

Straight comedy discs don't usuallymake the charts. "Lizzie Borden" by theChad Mitchell trio and "The Astronaut"by Joze Jiminez are examples of two ofthese. Yet both reached the U.S. topthirty.

But Bernard Cribbins comes prettynear straight comedy discs with hisefforts to date. He doesn't use nearly somany gin ks as many of the comedyhit -makers of late-i.e. Charlie Drake,Lonnie Donegan, or maybe AnthonyNewley.

Even U.S. gimmick discs don't alwaysmake our charts. Larry Verne floppedtwice with his "Mr. Custer" and "Mr.Livingstone", while the Chipmunkshaven't been in the charts for years.

You can't give formulae For thesuccess of comedy discs in this countryor the States. There aren't any, Every-thing rests on the fickleness of the public,Really humourous discs can be flops-corny ones may be hits.

KEEP IT SIMPLE, SAYS"THE secret? Keep it simple, man.

And keep it swinging", said AntoineDomino, whose figure explained his nick-name, "Fats".

He was just about to go onstage atthe Antibes Jazz Festival, in Juan LesPins, South of France, last week.

But despite his impressive record ofhits, Fats Domino was more than a littleapprehensive about facing a Europeanaudience for the first time.

STOMPINGHowever, after the first concert, lasting

around 11 hours, he professed himselfmore than satisfied. It was an hour anda half of good humoured stompingrhythm and Blues, a bit of comedy,posing for photographers and generallybehaving like a man having a 'good time.

The audience responded too althoughit was rather quiet for a French audience.No jiving at all in the aisles. However itwas obvious that Fats was a success ifonly by the applause that greeted the firstfew bars of "Blueberry Hill".

FATS DOMINOThe Domino orchestra is three saxo-

phones and two trumpets plus the usualrhythm section. Fats never leaves thepiano at all-not even when the rest ofthem paraded, circus band fashion, inand out of the audience playing "WhenThe Saints Go Marching In".

The sound is close to the sound wehear on disc and the repertoire consistedof most of his old hits-most of themGold Disc winners. Fats comes third inthe total of artists who have won GoldDiscs with Crosby and Presley in frontof him.

Fats professed great admiration forElvis to everybody.

About England, he said: "Of courseI'd like to play in England. I heard alot about British audiences from myfriends who have toured there and theysound different to most other audiences.Things that are successful before one

audience don't appear to be so inBritain.

"But I'd sure like to play that country.However I'd have to have my band withme-or Dizzy's."

Dizzy was jazzman Dizzy Gillespiewho had brought a special big band withhim to headline the Festival with Fats.Fats said that Dizzy's band was the besthe'd heard.

CONFINESPerhaps Fats and his kind of music

doesn't fit into the strict confines of ajazz festival-containing as it does, atenor saxist whose big moment was whenhe squealed like a cow in pain-butthankfully the French are broaderminded.

And in this instance several thousandFrenchmen weren't wrong . . . in theirapplause.

with herself pays tribute to thepower of televised scalpel. Her idea of acomplete cure is to get in Dr Kildare andDr Casey for consultation. A novel ideagiven a subdued treatment by Smitty.Tune isn't all that hot. Diagnosis:hardly chart material. Perhaps it coulddo with a bit of treatment from Dr.Feelgood and the Internes.

"Norman" came in for a beating justrecently and the flip should do the samefor Seymour. Smitty sings in her breath-less panting style and there's somethingfunny going on with Seymour towardsthe end.

TI1E ISLEY BROTHERS TwistAnd Shout; THE 1.B. SPECIAL IN-STRUMENTAL Spanish Twist(Stateside SS 112)QOME YEARS AGO the Isley Brothers" had some big hits in the States. Oneof them was "Shout" and this is in muchthe same vein. Medium tempo franticblues number that's high up in theStates. Twist beat for the number withthe Bros. going really mad and in theend sounding rather like something froma zoo. This is good nevertheless.

A different team on the flip, play"Spanish Twist" with a peculiar twangingsound. But it's the top side that'll snatchthe plays.

day means strings, whoo-whooingchorus tumpty-tump rhythm single noteson a squeeze box and French horns dis-appearing over the horizon. In fact thecomplete Western soundtrack belovedby Hollywood since Al Jolson firstspoke. Very evocative but hardlydistinctive.

Flipside also comes from the film,"Guns In The Afternoon" and for afleeting second you might think it waspart of the top side. The chorus stilljogalong with us, the rhythm is almostthe same and the squeeze box gentlemanhasn't learnt many new notes.

tries his hand at the type of pseudocountry and western music that has sentJoe Brown to the top. The lyric featuresMr. Harvey doing the right and noblething about not telling his best buddyJoe that his (Joe's) girl has fallen inlove with him (Peter). Rather than writeto an advice column, Peter sings aboutit. And rather well too.

The tempo remains about the same-jogalong style-for the flip. Peter's huskyvoice grows on you.

hit is given an instrumental perform-ance by the team of Santo and Johnny.They inject the song with a lot of feelingthat it's not usually possible to put intoa record like this.

The playing is excellent but the songis better with a lyric. Better luck nexttime for the boys who had the big"Sleepwalk" bit.

Western type feel on the flip, "StageTo Cimarron". More echo than the topside makes this a more saleable productwe think. Good playing.

THREE SFREDDY STAFF ORCHESTRAJitterbug Waltz; Amore (Oriole CB1745)"LITTERBUG" WAS one of the firstJ jazz waltzes, composed by Thomas

Fats Waller, and Freddie Staff allowshis alto saxist (who sounds like afugitive from the Bruheck Quartet) fullrein on its melodic content which ispretty high. Good professional recordwith mild chart appeal.

Back in 1%2 with the flipside, atwangy guitar plus Latin rhythm treat-ment of an old standard.

Mr. Staff throws in some weighty brassoccasionally but most of the work iscarried by guitar. The rhythm is a Latinstyled twist-don't knock it.

Nick Villard with his western "TheDay Of The Gun". A Frankie Lainekind of song with plenty of gory detailsto please the listeners.

Nick's big voice is very capable onthis type of song, and he'll soon be inthe charts. Whether or not with this one,we don't know. But it's good, all thesame.

Slower stuff on the flip with Nickgiving a good performance on this com-mercial side. Sad voiced Nick doesn'tneed much backing on this earthynumber It's good.

WE REMEMBERED with a littlenostalgia Hutch's version of "Sweet

Georgia Brown" some years back. Thisis in a rather different vein, and itappears to be the backing of the recent"Frogman" Henry hit "But I Do" withpiano substituted for the voice.

There's still some originality leftthough, and the record is quite enter-taining. Not hit potential though.

"Time Was" starts with some ratherbluesy piano stuff and continues in muchthe same vein. There's some interestingsounds on this somewhat off -beat side,but again, not much commercially.

CHUBBY CHECKER Dancin'Party; Gotta Get Myself Together(Columbia DB 4876)

FROMTHE TWISTER himself

comes "Dancin' Party" currentlyhigh in the U.S. charts. And we betto be high in ours. It's a frantic -typetwist number with a variety of dancesin the lyric. Repetitive but good withsome noisy backing from the sax, etc.

Should be a big hit.Slower stuff on the flip, with

Chubby getting a Fats Domino typebacking from the boys. It's a lovesong more or less and it makes achange for Chubby. But it's not slowenough to be deadly and the wholething swings along nicely.

TOP 20 TIPBRIAN HYLAND Sealed With AKiss; Summer Job (HMV 1051)

BRIAN'SBEEN in the twenty for

a long time with his "GinnyCome Lately". In the States, this isan even bigger hit, and when we hearit we know why.

Emotion packed performance onthe slowie with several gimmicks thatwill go down well. Brian talks of thelong lonely summer. On this softharmonica backed performance heputs that over perfectly.

"Summer Job" is a gayer but lesserperformance. It's a merry song witha merry backing, and some goodlyrics. But it doesn't mean too much.If it had been slightly better wewould have given the disc a higherrating.

TOP 20 TIPJOHN LEYTON Down The RiverNile; I Think I'm Falling In Love(HMV POP 1054)LONELY. no more. John Leyton

takes the Terry Gilkyson song"Down The River Nile" and gives ita special treatment. Eastern -typesounds galore with John's firm vocal-ising dominating the song.

This is so different from anythingelse John has done, that it will provehis efforts as an entertainer ratherthan solely a pop singer, if he canget away with it. But mind you it'sgood. and should be a hit.

Guitar and drums open the flip, "IThink I'm Falling in Love". Nicelittle song, with plenty of tune,melody and good vocal work fromJohn. A good flip.

LEROY VAN DYKE 1 Sat BackAnd Let It Happen; A BrokenPromise (Mercury AMT 1183)THE "WALK ON BY" king hasA decided to stop perambulating andjust let things happen. Fast Countrystyle, with a touch of the croak on the"Let it happen" bit. Bit rock 'n' roily,as well. Not as good as "Walk On By"and we have considerable doubts aboutits future in the Top Twenty. Point isthat it is a very well -made record butlacks the catchiness on first hearing thatusually marks out the sheep from thegoats.

Also it is a little bit busy, whichmeans the slender - enough themeobscured still further.

Same tempo for the flip and much thesame criticisms apply. But there are morefireworks from Le Roy . . . as if he isletting his emotions run away with him.Funny old-time piano fills in the gapsand the over-all picture is that he canhardly get the words out quickly enough.

ANDY STEWART The Lads 0'Bonnie Scotland; Sandy's Holiday(HMV., POP 1048)

AFTERA BRIEF excursion into the

blue grass of Kentucky with his lastdisc, Andy Stewart takes us right backto the green hills of Scotland with aprofessional piece of nationalism aboutScotsmen who always yearn for the

country of their birth and cry at thesight of a damp sponge. (Why do theyever leave anyway?)

The drums beat behind Andy inmaterial vein, the chorus stirs the bloodand all in all it's Stewart at his mostserious . . . and his best! Should selland sell over the border from glen toglen.

The Sandy in the title is the kind ofScotsman who thinks London is coveredwith undergrowth and peopled bysavages. He comes bouncing down from'hame' for a holiday, gets involved witha bird in Trafalgar Square and loses hiswatch. All done very comically, in theWill Fyfe fashion.

FOUR SSSSBILLY ECKSTINE Guilty; 1 WantTo Talk About You (Mercury AMT1182)INSTANT RECOGNITION with the

first phrase of this warm slow balladbecause Mr. B has one of the mostdistinctive voices on the scene. As usualwe checked to see if the record wasbeing played at a slower speed thannormal but that's part of his charm.

The song? A reasonably adult piece ofwriting from some years back. Mr. Bdidn't have to blow much dust off it toget it back into circulation.

The flip is written by Dilly himself andagain Bobby Tucker's string filledorchestra underline the mood. Again it'sslow and dreamy and suited to the deepdown tones of Billy. Music for going tosleep with-as opposed to sending youto sleep.

THREE SW%AL MARTINO Because You'reMine; Make Me Believe (Capitol CL15260)CARUSO IS DEAD; Lanza is dead,

now Al Martino tries the big soundwith the pipes. After the film -creditintroduction, his voice is surprisingly(and happily so) small in comparisonwith Lanza. A welcome change, though.It's just a short step to Covent Gardenfor AI and this type of disc. Let's seemore of this sort in the charts.

Monty Kelly conducts the orchestraagain in a Roger Williams manner forAl to warble a tune that is somewhatsimilar to the top side. But Al, as usual,performs well.

A fully qualified bricklayer, we believe,Al drops none here.

She's been so long without a hit thatwe can't give it a Top Twenty Tip. It'snot really up to the standard of someof her past beat numbers. But we'd liketo see it up there all the same.

Tom-toms open "It's Gonna Take MeSome Time" a very commercial sound-ing number with plenty of twangyguitar in the background. This side willbe a Juke Box Favourite. Actually it'sbetter than the top side.

AFTER his successful outing with"Rag Trade Rag" Gordon Franks

comes up with another theme. All themessell well, and this will be no exception,but it won't make the charts.

Very pleasant and well -performed withsome good sounds from the boys, thepiece is played with a much smallergroup it seems than their last. There'snone of that big band sound on this one.But it's quite good, nevertheless.

Flip is a Hawaiian sounding piece withappropriate instruments to carry off theeffect. "Johnny's Tune" is a somewhatrepetitive little number without thecommercial appeal of the top side.

S. FEMME vocal team, the AngelsU handle the standard very capably.They've a very pleasant sound, on theirharmonious work, and solo parts.

Funny thing about this team-they'vehad two huge Stateside hits with " 'Til"and "Cry Baby Cry" which didn't getreleased over here. Now this third efforthasn't made it in the States, but it hasbeen released here Strange are the waysof the world

Flip side is "Blow Joe" and there's abit more background work on this one.Good vocalising, but not too commercial.Fast-ish without too much of a tune,and plenty of interesting work on thegirls' solo efforts. And a good organsolo in the middle.

THE BARONETS vocal team make asmooth and polished job of "Scot-

land The Brave". Folksy -type groupwith soft and pleasant voices and mildaccents. The backing on the song is verysubdued making a pleasant change frommany discs of late.

Half way through they start singing"Auld Lang Syne". The trouble was wethought it was "I Understand" by theG -Clefs. Such is pop pollution.

Autumny sounds herald the beginningof "Autumn Leaves" which is given apleasant going over by the boys. If youlike this standard this treatment willappeal to you-it's very good of its kind.should sell well beyond the Roman wall.Not too commercial for the Englishmarket though.

LITTLE JOEY AND THE FLIPSBongo Stomp; Lost Love (Pye Int.25152)

AS YOU could probably guess fromthe title and group name this is one

of those discs that could only have beenproduced in the States.

Similar in a way to "Bristol Stomp"it has more of a bluesy feel, with a tunethat has keen used in the basic form onmany great Rock hits, mainly severalyears back. There's an insistent beat,with plenty of falsetto from Little Joey,while the Flips provide him aptly with agood choral background. Bags of atmos-phere on this spontaneous - soundingdance -type disc.

Slower noises on the flip from theFlips. Also quite a bit of falsetto. AndLittle Joey singing the melody on abouttwo notes. Not the side you would play.

JACK SCOTT I Can't Hold YourLetters; Sad Story (Capitol CL15261)

ON THE COUNTRY kick, Mr. Scottnow turns to John D. Loudermilk

for his top side. Lots of guitar stringingalong behind him, he sings how mereletters don't mean much to him - notcompared with holding the girl in hisarms. It jogs along, typically pseudo -Country style, but it has the sort ofatmosphere that we'd like to see disturbedby an explosion.

Jack has done much better than this.It's not that it's so bad it's just thatit's not good.

Jack Scott turns to Jack Scott for the`B' side. Again, guitar hammers awayearly on and Mr. Scott has invested him-self with commercially livelier lyrics andmelody. Even so, we doubt if it willmake much impression on the salescharts.

BUDDY KNOX She's Gone; NowThere's Only Me (Liberty LIB 55473)

SLOW opening for the Dion -like treat-ment of "She's Gone" a frantic

beater with plenty of gimmicks from allconcerned on the disc. This isn't the bestthat Buddy Knox has done, in fact it'snearly the worst.

Not such a bad string solo in themiddle. Typical stuff throughout - thewhole thing sounds slightly speeded up.

Slower on the flip, a sad-ish story oftwo tickets for the show, one of whichis useless now. In fact Buddy continuesto telt how he's bought two of every-thing but now his girl's gone.

Much better than the top side-there's a tinge of C & W about it.

Song is good and has a strong lyricwith Lena extracting just about every-thing from it.

A record worth buying.On the second 'A' side some

cascading strings open the deck. Not ascommercial as the other side, probablybecause this type of song and lyric is abit on the hackneyed side.

Nevertheless we aren't criticising thedisc-just it's potential. The other sidewill probably grab the sales.

conies the belated offering fromU.S. Bonds. called "Seven Day Week-end".

Typical Bonds delivery on this onewith plenty of atmosphere and echo.Fast-ish twist number with interestingsax solo mid -way.

Much the same as all his others-wedon't really think it will make the charts.

Some "Quarter To Three' sounds open"Gettin' A Grove' on the flip. Again it'stypical Bonds stuff with plenty of every-thing except originality. We think thatGary should get out of his rut quick.

THREE %SSMARK DWAYNE Little Bitty Heart;Today's Teardrops (Oriole CB 1744)WE'RE SURE THERE was another

"Little Bitty Heart", from theBrook Brothers. Another country -styleopus from Mr. Dwayne, who obviouslyshares the theory that this is the nextsort of craze -music. This is a harmlesssort of song but it hardly raises the pulse -rate. It twangs along in an eminentlypeaceable sort of way with the usual glutof guitar sounds in the background.

Much faster, the flip was a hit for Roy

GARY U.S. BONDS:Is he in a rut?

Orbison and Mark Dwayne gives it a

thorough work -over. If he has a fault,it is that he rarely varies his tonalqualities and just plods, all speedy -like,through the lot. If he has an asset, it ishis enthusiasm and fire. We rate this verymuch stronger than the top side . . .

but commercially there is the fact thatMr. Orbison has had his share of theroyalties already.

AFTER his mildly successful "C'est SiBon" Dean entertains us with another

cosmopolitan offering, sung partly inEnglish, partly in French.

Soft and stylish with good work fromthe backing and chorus, which occasion-ally chants the chorus solo.

This should be more popular with theolde- folk than with the kids. It'll sell,nevertheless.

Vibes open "Baby -O", which movesat a softly swinging pace. Not particu-lar:), distinctive, ban very pleasant. Thefaster tempo than the top side makesthis a good double -Sider.

DEFINITELY FOR THOSE Northof the border is this one. Dennis

sings with a pleasant Scotch accent.Medium tempo number dealing with afootball match at Hampden Park.Accordion backed, the song has afolksy flavour.

As we said before, definitely for thoseNorth of the border.

Faster tempo on the flip, which webelieve did quite well for another Scottishteam, Hall and McGregor. This thoughis more authentic. For those who don'tspeak the language, the title, roughlytranslated, means " Football Crazy "-

My first reaction was disappointment.When he sings his own music, then RayCharles has few, if any, equals. Butwhen he is singing this type of song Ifind that he cones off second best tothe artists in that field.

But it looks like I'm very wrong again.The public seem to be liking it, andafter all they are the folks who compilethe best-selling .lists . . . not me.

Although this album could hardly becalled "folky" in the sense this columnapplies the description, it has the virtueof using good material, and, again forthe most part, treating it kindly.

Otherwise the blatant Francis voice anddelivery, and the commercially slantedapproach of Cliff Parman and theJordanaires, all combine to make anotherof these American pop -folk sets whichare flooding the market these days.

Coloured blues and spirituals areseldom without some degree of merit andthis album is one of the better ones. Ido wish, however, that British recordcompanies would vet the sleeves ofAmerican items before blindly reprintingall the embarrassing and tasteless guffaccompanying the original print. A writercalled Dzondria Lalsac finds a new lowwith some badly written blurb whichtells us nothing at all about theGospelaires. I quote without comment," . . . the Gospelaires are more thanjust singers . . . noted merely for theirwarmth and excellence of style andpresentation!!! BERT WEEDON may cancel his pro-posed one -day trip for cabaret in

Spain on either August 5 or 12 infavour of a week's stay there later in theyear.*Meanwhile, he has been commissioned

to write the music for an upcomingBritish dramatic film. The score, whichhe will also play, will be on modernjazz lines.

On September 7, he is in cabaret fora week at the Liverpool Cabaret Cluband on August 23, he broadcasts in"Workers' Playtime".

Footnote : On Sunday next, Bert hasone of his most unusual engagementsever. At Skegness, where he has aSunday concert at the Big Top, he willofficially christen two baby elephantswith bottles of milk.

JET'S FIRST

SOLO TVJET HARRIS makes his first solo ap-

pearance on television on August 10-and he has formed a new group oftop -class instrumentalists, to be knownas the "Jetblacks" to accompany him.

There will be five in the outfit-allhand-picked by Jet after lengthyauditions.

On August 19, Jet makes his first per-sonal appearance as a "single"-at thePrincess Theatre, Torquay, where he willtop the bill, along with the Jetblacks.

And, in other directions, his careerbuilds. Awaiting signature and full agree-ment is a contract which will make himco-star with two internationally -knownAmerican pop stars. The arrangement isfor a long series of one-night standscovering most of Britain.

Jet is also under consideration for asecond film role, the main part in a newversion of "Tom Sawyer", the MarkTwain classic. It is as an adventure -seeking boy who lived an exciting lifewith his pal, "Huckleberry Finn", alongthe banks of the Mississippi.

Said Jet this week: "Things really lookpretty good".

'THAT YODELLING BIT'FRANK IFIELD, 24 -year -old

Coventry -born singer who startedhis professional career in Australiaat the age of ten, sits comfortablyin Number One spot in the TopTwenty this week.

His staggeringly successful "I Re-member You" had sold half -a -million copies by Tuesday and hewas presented with an award forreaching the quarter -million markon EMI's "Monday Spectacular"by Norrie Paramor, who handledthe original session.

And, on the same evening, Frankmade his London cabaret debut atthe West End's "Jack 0' Clubs"where he scored a resoundinghit . .

The Ifield single is NOT the fastest-seling single but it is remarkable,nevertheless, because disc sales arenever as high in the summer as inthe winter.

It had nothing like the advance ordersthat, say, a Cliff Richard disc has-and has built-since June 29 when itwas released, purely on the air andTV plays.

This week, Frank is busy working withNorrie Paramor on his first -ever albumat EMI's North London studios. Thefirst four numbers cut were standards,dressed up in a folksey, country-and-western style. Possibly a single willemerge from the sessions, which areto be continued next month and inSeptember, but the main idea is tocomplete a varied album,Norrie Paramor has said : "The hit

single has not the full C and Wsound but it has the right flavour.It is a British sort of sound andI feel that not only will it staya popular sound but that Frankwill be the leading singer in thisfield in the country.

"In a sense, it is the first time thatFrank has been able to sing the typeof number he really likes."

Norrie added that everybody was de-lighted that success had come toFrank for he was regarded as one ofthe most likeable and charmingsingers in the business. Certainly the"Juke Box Jury" panellists agreedwith this in voting the disc a unani-mous hit-for they vied with eachother in singing the Ifield off-stagepraises.

Recently, Frank told the NRM: "Theimportant thing about getting a num-ber one hit is that you can cope withthe increased billing and prestige onstage. I've worked for years, gettingto know audiences and studying howto switch moods and the result is

that I feel confident."Only one thing worries me. And that

is being typed. I'd hate to spend therest of my life feeling that I just hadto do the yodelling bit, for instance.I think a singer has to keep ringingthe changes."

In terms of immediate appearances,Frank's mammoth success makes littledifference because he was alreadyfully -booked BEFORE his three-weekrise to the top.

But financially he is very happy becausehe wrote the flip, " I Listen To MyHeart" himself and will get a largeshare of the royalties.

This was described by the staid"Guardian" this week as "cuttingyourself a nice slice of the action".

A new job for Frank, to be recordedthis week, is two appearances on RussConway's upcoming Light Programmeradio series, scheduled to start inSeptember.

TEN GOLD DISCSMITCH MILLER, of " Sing Along "

fame, was awarded TEN Gold Discsat a sales convention organized last weekin Miami Beach by Columbia Records.

Four of the gold discs were for LPswhich have sold over a million copies-" Sing Along With Mitch," " More SingAlong,' " Still More Sing Along " and" Christmas Sing Along." And six werefor LPs whose sales have exceeded halfa million : " Party Sing Along," " Satur-day Night Sing Along," "SentimentalSing Along,' " Memories Sing Along,"" Happy Times Sing Along " and " Holi-day Sing Along."

It was said that this was the largestcollection of gold discs ever awarded toa performer for album sales.

Mitch has made 16 "Sing Along" LPs-and there are others which are fastapproaching the Gold Disc standard.

CONNIE FRANCIS

WRITERCONNIE FRANCIS has turned author.

She has completed her first book,called "For Every Young Heart", and itwill be published first in America onOctober 25. Connie put the finishingtouches to it while completing filming in"Follow The Boys".

Connie admits to finding writingsomething of a problem, particularlybecause her vocal career continues toflourish. But she had dedicated the bookto all her fans and she has aimed atmaking it part -biographical and part -advice.

The song -star is starting a four -weekengagement at the Sahara Hotel in LasVegas soon-and is having big successboth sides of the Atlantic with her latestsingle, "Vacation".

JUKEBOX RICKY"D"'T Play Number Nine-(On The

Juke Box)" is Ricky Valance'slatest single release. And this week Rickyhas talked to juke -box owners with theresult that his disc will be played onmany thousand machines - at NumberNine!

On August 7, Ricky stars in a newScottish Television programme, "StudioDownbeat", a variety show.

Tuesday this week, he appeared at theHope public -house, Wandsworth Com-mon-and dismantled a pile of penniescollected for charity.

A new Star ballroom policy brings inJohnny Keating and the Z -men, theKestrels vocal group and rock organistAlan Haven from September 15-and thetrad series continues every Sunday, withthe: Mike Cotton outfit on July 29.

Tavern OpensBBC Light Programme's very successful

" Trad Tavern " makes a one-shotreappearance for the August Bank Holi-day listening public-August 6.

It takes the name "Trad-upon-Thames"and comes as an outside broadcast fromBishop's Park Stadium, Fulham.

The show is produced by Bobby Jayeand features Mr. Acker Bilk and theParamount Jazz Band. Alex Welsh andhis band, singer Jeannie Lamb, and thewhole affair will be compered by DizDisley.

This programme is to be pre-recordedon August I, from 7.30-8.30-so if youwould like to be there, the BBC LightProgramme welcomes you.

cessful show at the Opera House.Though I wasn't in town myself I

didn't have to go far on my returnto hear praise being heaped on hisperformance ... also heard that mymates the Shadows did a capacityshow at the Queen's when I wasagain an absentee they'll soon becalling me AWOL Weedon if I don'twatch it.

* * *Top comedian Ted Ray had an

audience backstage as well as frontwhen I worked with him on a"Blackpool Nights" broadcast in theweek. He had the entire cast and thetechnicians in stitches throughout re-hearsals and the show. He just neverstops cracking gags.

* *Had lunch with Sheila Southern-

looking lovely as usual and deeplysuntanned too-who tells me she isvery happy indeed starring withDonald Peers this season ... alsohappy was Nicholas Parsons whodropped in to see me during one ofaur matinees. Nick is, of course,corking alongside his old mate inthe Arthur Haynes Show.

Still on the social whirl Ted Hock -ridge threw a party for all of us inthe show last week and introducedus to a "special Canadian" punch

it packed such a wallop it hadus all really reeling I can tell you.

* * *We are all pretty amazed at the

stamina shown by jazz star KennyBall these days. Kenny has becomefirmly addicted to tennis and you willfind him on the courts at everyavailable opportunity. He has playedso much that he is virtually sufferingfrom that old familiar "tennis elbow"ailment. He's so sore and stiff (nonot from Ted's punch!) that it's awonder he can hold his trumpet tohis lips. Should have a bit of theCharles Atlas about him with all thatexercise.
