GETTING UP THERE

- A LAMENT -

We don’t feel old at all,

Maybe an odd ache or twinge.

Certainly not like those old

characters across the street,

staggering around who don’t

resemble us in any way!

Are we some odd beings beset by loneli-

ness, who still have desire to hold someone

in their arms, a kiss, an embrace,

no more than that,

that special connection which contains the

hopes and dreams that we should still be

allowed to share.

Why do the others not understand the

process of living, which doesn’t collapse or

fail because a number is reached?

So why can’t our younger ones ‘get it’ and

realize that they, one day, someday, will

become exactly like us!

Surely then, as a token of our love, we can

allow them their time of innocence.

Just as we were allowed in our time.

Sunday, July 17th, 2016 was a

special day for Wayne Buholzer,

daughter Dar and granddaugh-

ter Maddy when they took it up-

on themselves to climb Mount

Albert Edward, the sixth highest

mountain on Vancouver Island

at an elevation of 2,093 metres.

It was a spectacular feat for the

three generations who thor-

oughly enjoyed themselves and

awed by the fabulous, out-of-

this world view!

As they had such a great time,

they are already discussing their

next challenge! from Lisa

with their U.K. passport. However, start-ing September 30, 2016 Canadian citi-zens including dual citizens, will need to show proof they are Canadian to board their flight to Canada.

This means that they must travel on a valid Canadian passport, as it is the only reliable and universally accepted travel document that proves they are a citizen of Canada. You can find our more information about how to apply for or renew a Cana-dian passport at Canada.ca/passport. If you have friends of family who are not citizens of Canada and are planning to visit Canada from a visa-exempt country, please advise them to apply for an eTA prior to their travels.

Passport Warning for British Ex-Pats Dual Canadian citizens: Make sure you fly to Canada with a valid Canadian Passport

British Ex-Pats are being warned of new rules that may prevent them from flying back to Canada. From the end of September, all Canadian Citizens will be required to show a Canadian passport before flying to Canada. So, you won’t be able to use your British passport, or any other passport – even if you are a dual citizen. The eTA is a new entry requirement for visa-exempt foreign nationals travelling to Canada by air, and it allows Canada to screen travellers prior to their arrival. Canadian citizens, including Canadian dual citizens, cannot apply for an eTA as this requirement was set up to screen foreigners for admissibility to enter Cana-da temporarily. So, if a Canadian has citizenship from a country such as the United Kingdom, they may be used to flying to Canada

Remember going to the store and shopping casually, and when you

went to pay for it you used your own money? Nothing that you had to swipe or punch in some amount,

and remember when the cashier person had to really count? The milkman used to go from door to door, and it was just a few cents

more than going to the store. There was a time when mailed let-

ters came right to your door, Without a lot of junk mail ads, sent out by every store. The mailman knew each house by name and

knew where it was sent.

One time the music that you played whenever you would jive, was from

a vinyl, big-holed record called a forty-five.

Oh sure, we had our problems then, just like we do today, and

always we were striving, trying for a better way. Oh, the simple life we lived still seems like so much fun, how can you explain a game, just

kick the can and run? And why would the kids put base-ball cards between bicycle spokes and for a nickel, red machines had

little bottled Cokes? This life seemed so much easier, slower in some ways. I love the

new technology, but I sure do miss those days.

So time moves on and so do we, nothing stays the same. But I sure love to reminisce and walk down

memory lane. With all today’s technology, we

grant that it’s a plus! But it’s fun to

look away back and say, HEY LOOK, GUYS, THAT WAS US!

“ Good friends are like quilts—-they age with you, yet never lose their warmth.”

A little house with three bed-rooms, one bathroom and one

car on the street. A mower that you had to push to

make the grass look neat. In the kitchen on the wall, we only had one phone, and no need for

recordings, someone was always home.

We only had a living room where

we would congregate, unless at mealtime in the kitchen where we

ate. We had no need for family rooms or extra rooms to dine.

When meeting as a family those two rooms worked out fine.

We only had one TV set and chan-nels maybe two, but always there was one of them with something

worth the view. For snacks we had potato chips that tasted like a chip.

And if you wanted flavour, there was Lipton’s onion dip!

Store-bought snacks were rare because my mother liked to cook.

And nothing can compare to snacks in Betty Crocker’s book.

Weekends were for family trips, or staying home to play. We all did

things together … even go to church to pray. When we did our weekend trips, depending on the weather, no one stayed at home because we liked to be together. Sometimes we would separate to

do things on our own, but we knew where the others were without our

own cell phone.

Then there were the movies with your favourite movie star, and

nothing can compare to watching movies in your car.

Then there were the picnics at the peak of summer season, pack a lunch and find some trees and

never need a reason. Get a baseball game together with all the friends you know, have real action playing ball … and no game

video. store.

Remember when the doctor used to be the family friend, and didn’t need

insurance or a lawyer to defend. The way that he took care of you or what he had to do, because he took

an oath and strived to do the best for you.

In just over a month the nomination board will be placed in the

Centre. I hope by now you have had time to give thought to be-

coming a mem- ber of the board.

Without the support of the

members, it will be very difficult to

keep the Centre running at the ex-

cellent pace if has enjoyed over

the years. Please help the board by either nominating someone

(with their permission) or better still, volunteering yourself1 We

need one vice-president and five directors this year.

THINK ABOUT

IT!

As we grow older, and hence wiser, we slowly realize that wearing a $300 or a $30 watch...they both tell the same time.

Whether we carry a $300 or a $30 wallet/handbag...the amount of money inside is the same..

Whether the house we live in is 300 or 3000 sq. ft … loneli-ness is the same.
