14th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Native Evangelizers

In today’s gospel, Jesus returned to his home town of Nazareth. He had moved to Capernaum, but he came back

“to his native place.” He was the guest preacher at the synagogue service, and people were astonished at his wisdom.

Yet they did not accept him and took offense because he was one of their own, a local boy. They didn’t take him seri-

ously because they knew his family, and he was from the working class. Jesus said that a prophet is not without honor

except in his native place and among his own people. He could not perform any mighty deeds there because of their lack

of faith.

We might have the same experience as Jesus when we try to spread the faith. People might not take us seriously,

or they may not accept what we say because they know who we are and where we come from. Sometimes family mem-

bers and close friends and neighbors are the hardest people to evangelize. Nonetheless, we are called to do what we can

to spread the gospel. When Jesus was not successful in his hometown, he went to the neighboring villages instead. He

then summoned his apostles and sent them out, two by two, to evangelize.

Evangelization continues to be a central task of every disciple of Christ. Pope Francis’ first Apostolic Exhorta-

tion, Evangelii Gaudium – “The Joy of the Gospel,” emphasizes the centrality of evangelization in the life of a Christian.

The Pope taught that our efforts to evangelize must begin with a personal encounter with Jesus Christ:

“I invite all Christians, everywhere, at this very moment, to a renewed personal encounter with Jesus Christ, or

at least an openness to letting him encounter them; I ask all of you to do this unfailingly each day. No one should think

that this invitation is not meant for him or her, since no one is excluded from the joy brought by the Lord.”

This Saturday (July 14) the Church honors Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, a powerful example of a joyful evangelizer

from North America. Saint Kateri was born near the town of Auriesville, New York, in 1656, the daughter of a Christian

Algonquin mother and a non-Christian Mohawk Chief. She was four years old when her parents died of smallpox. The

disease also attacked Kateri and left her face disfigured. She was adopted by her two aunts and an uncle. Kateri convert-

ed to the Catholic faith as a teenager. She was baptized at the age of twenty and incurred the great hostility of her tribe.

Although she had to suffer greatly for her faith, she remained firm and joyful in it. Kateri lived a life dedicated to pray-

er, penitential practices, and care for the sick and aged. Every morning, even in bitterest winter, she would walk to

Mass. She was devoted to the Eucharist and to Jesus Crucified. Despite much suffering and persecution, she was a joyful

evangelizer. She died at the age of twenty-four and is known as the

“Lily of the Mohawks.”

Saint Kateri is a powerful example of discipleship for teenagers

and young adults. Though only a teenager herself, she went against the

customs of her society and embraced a life of virtue as taught by Jesus

Christ and his Church. Her life was centered on Jesus, whom she met

daily in the Eucharist, and in the persons of the sick and aged. She

evangelized others by the witness of her life and her fearless testimony

to Christian truth. St. Kateri Tekakwitha is the first Native American

to be canonized. As we celebrate her memorial this week, let us ask for

her intercession, that we too might be faithful and joyful evangelizers,

right where we are, in our native place.

FROM THE OFFICE OF DISCIPLESHIP AND MISSION

Men’s Fellowship - Thursday Morning 6:30-8:00am - Now – July 12, 2018. DAVID the KING. DVD Presentation by Bishop Robert Barron. Adam was the first king and steward of the rightly ordered Garden of Eden. He was called to govern the Garden, but by allowing negative influences to wreak havoc on Eden, he did not fulfill his kingly responsi-bility. Long after Adam, David emerged as the definitive king who would restore order in the Garden and bring the world under the lordship of God. But like Adam, David fell, and his reign ushered in a succession of compromised kings and rejected prophets. In DAVID the KING, Bishop Barron helps us to understand this pivotal figure in light of the first king and the King of kings. Come for the donuts, stay for the truth!! Participants for the Scripture study of the Gospel of John: The Gospel of John reflects the tensions, pressures and influences of the time and place in which it was written. John has a very black-white view of the world; good and evil, light and darkness, spirit and flesh. The writer may have known the Synoptic writers and drew on their traditions. There are also several other sources that might have influenced the writing, such as; a collection of the miracles(signs), a collection of Jesus’ sayings and an earlier account of Jesus’ passion, the empty tomb and the resurrection appearances of Jesus. Classes will start September 5/6

What is Sunday Morning Scripture with Sister Clarinda? This is frequently on the lips of people that I meet in the parish. This Scripture offers us a time to reflect on the coming Sunday Readings. Often, we come to Mass following the busyness of the morning preparations and have not had time to really focus on what is being read. We need to hear what God is saying to us in the readings. Every Tuesday morning after the 8:30am Mass we gather in Room 204 to spend some time listening to the coming Sunday readings and studying what the Spirit is saying to us. After the discussion we spend a few moments of quiet reflection. Our session lasts about an hour and ends with song and pray-er. Everyone is invited to come as often as they can. Sunday Morning Scripture begins Tuesday, September 18.

The Gloria seems so long….what is its purpose? This ancient hymn is sung or said on Sundays, unless it is during the Season of Advent or Lent. Here we have the song of the angels at Christmas, the

declaration of John the Baptist, the cry of mercy from those sitting in darkness, the recalling of the resurrec-tion of Christ and our share in it, the song of the Blessed in Heaven, and the declaration that God is God. The prayer is the whole story of salvation wrapped up in the praise of the Triune God. Excerpts from A Pocket Guide to The Mass, Michael
