Congratulations! You are now the recipient of three new waste collection carts. Please give them

a good home. These carts are part of Peel’s new waste collection program. They are the best, most

efficient way for you to bring your waste to the curb. The carts have wheels that make it easier to

get your waste to the curb and the lids prevent windblown litter. The organics cart also features a

unique gravity lock that keeps out pests like raccoons and squirrels.

BEGINNING IN JANUARY 2016, THERE WILL BE SEVERAL THINGS YOU’LL NEED TO KEEP IN MIND:

• Your new recycling cart will replace your blue/grey boxes. Your new garbage cart will replace your cans/bags. Yournew organics cart will replace your old green bin.

• Your organics cart will be collected every week.• Garbage and recycling will be collected on alternating weeks.• As a result, garbage and organics will be collected one week and recycling and organics will be collected the next week.• Your collection day may be changing in 2016. You can check your collection day and schedule online

at peelregion.ca/waste• We’ll take back your old blue/grey boxes and green bins in early 2016.

HOW TO SET OUT YOUR NEW CARTS ON COLLECTION DAY

The new carts work with the new automated collection vehicles. For your carts to be collected they will need to be setout properly. Here’s what you need to do to ensure your waste is collected:

PLACE IT:• On your collection day, place your waste at the curb by 7 a.m.• Place your carts as close to the road as possible without blocking the road or sidewalk.• Make sure carts are clear from trees or other overhead obstructions.• Ensure carts are accessible to collection trucks and avoid having cars parked too close to carts. • During the winter months, please do not place carts on top of or behind snow banks.• Please do not use any items to keep the cart lids closed (e.g. bungee cords).• Please ensure material is not wedged into your carts or overflowing. The organics lid should be locked

for collection.

FACE IT:• Place carts so that the front of the cart is facing straight toward the street, with the handles facing the house.

SPACE IT:• For safe and efficient collection, ensure there is an arm’s length of space on both sides of your carts to allow

for automated cart collection.• Extra material must also be placed out on the correct day, at an arm’s length distance from your carts.

Extra material may include:• Tagged garbage• Recycling (in clear or transparent blue bags only)• Bulky items (e.g. furniture)• Yard waste• Large metal appliances and fixtures (by appointment only).

ERASE IT:• Please remove your carts and any uncollected material from the curb by 8 p.m. on your collection day.

THE RECYCLING CART (BLUE LID)

Everything you previously put in your blue/grey box now goes in the recycling cart. You simply empty and rinse recyclable items and place them directly in the recycling cart. Do not put recyclable items inside plastic or grocery bags as this makes them harder to sort.

You may be surprised by some of the things that can and cannot be recycled, so this is a good opportunity to brush up on your recycling knowledge. Our website peelregion.ca/waste has a handy tool to help you determine what goes in your recycling cart.

Here are a few items that CAN go in your recycling cart:• Most paper, plastic, glass and metal containers and packaging• Plastic and glass bottles • Milk and juice cartons• Juice boxes• Plastic cups (straws are garbage)• Paper, magazines, newspapers, construction paper and cardboard cartons (but no small scraps)• Empty plastic grocery or shopping bags. Please put them all together in a tied plastic bag before placing in the recycling cart.

Here are a few items that CANNOT go in your recycling cart:• Household hazardous waste • Coffee and tea pods• Home health care waste, including sharps (needles, syringes or lancets)

• Steel, plastic or ceramic dishes, cookware (pots and pans) and utensils• Household electronics, including VHS and cassette tapes• Automotive parts and motor oil containers• Propane tanks and fire extinguishers• Kitchen/food waste• Construction, demolition and renovation materials

SOME ADDITIONAL TIPS:

• If your recycling cart is full, place extra recyclable items in a clear or transparent blue plastic recycling bag at an arm’s length distance from your cart. Blue boxes will no longer be collected.

• Cardboard boxes must be flattened and placed in your recycling cart.• Excess cardboard must be bundled and placed an arm’s length distance from your carts.• The lid of your recycling cart must be closed for collection.
