Founded in 1837 by Deming Jarves, andlocated in the Mt. Washington area of BostonMassachusetts, the Mt. Washington GlassWorks produced mostly utilitarianglassware until 1869, when, after purchasingthe New Bedford Glass Company, factoryowner William Libbey relocated thebusiness to New Bedford Massachusetts. Here the Mount Washington Glass Workswould operate from 1870 until 1894producing, some of the most beautiful anddiverse American art glass of the Victorianera.
Brilliant cut glass was one of the first itemsproduced at the new factory. From 1871through the late 1890’s, pitchers, vases, plates, goblets, teapots and other shapeswere cut from high quality blanks. With theintroduction of White Lusterless, Lava, andIris Iridescent glass, the company was on itsway to being America’s art glass master.
In 1874, Englishman Frederick S. Shirleywould become affiliated with, and later, chief designer for what in 1876, wouldbecome the Mt. Washington Glass Company,America’s largest producer of Victorian artglass. It was during Shirley’s tenure at MtWashington, that he would patent many ofthe art glass lines for which the companywas famous, including Amberina, Burmese,Peachblow and Crown Milano. The 1880sbrought the introduction of numerous artglass wares including Rose Amber, Burmese,Peachblow, Pearl Satin, Albertine, Cameo,Crown Milano, Royal Flemish, Neapolitan,Verona, Colonial Ware, and numerousdecorated wares. Smith Brothers, Alfredand Harry came to Mt. Washington in 1871from the Boston and Sandwich GlassCompany, and established the decoratingdepartment at Mt. Washington. In 1874,during company reorganization, theybought the decorating department and
leased the space from the factorysupervising all the decoration at Mt.Washington until leaving in 1885.
From 1880 until 1894, Mount Washingtonsupplied glass to the PairpointManufacturing Corporation to be used withthe silver plate which they produced. Theyproduced glass for many items includingcondiment sets, brides bowl holders, epergnes, and pickle castors. These twocompanies worked cooperatively until 1894when Pairpoint purchased the MountWashington Glass Works. After the merger,Mount Washington operated as a divisionof Pairpoint and produced glass, includingthe glass used for Pairpoint reverse paintedand puffy lamp shades, until at least 1915.

WALTER LARSEN’S FALL
ANTIQUES SHOW & SALE
During October, Antiques Show promoter Walter Larsen, of Alameda, California was in the Salt Lake Valley, with the latest installment of Utah’s longest running antiques show & sale. Walter’s Fall show, held at the South Towne Expo Center on October 8th, 9th & 10th, as usual, attracted a fine crowd of collectors. With antiques dealers from through-out the Western United States. The Larsen shows, which have become synonymous with quality, also feature some of Utah's finest, most respected antiques dealers, many of which can trace their participation to Walters earliest years. Larsen, who has been promoting antiques shows for 4 decades, has been bringing his show to the Salt Lake area For more than 30 years. Locating first at the Salt Palace, and ExpoMart in downtown Salt Lake City, in recent years the South Towne Expo Center in Sandy has become home to the show. Since moving his show from down-town, to the South end of the valley, the event seems to draw a somewhat different, more diverse crowd, and, the merchandise mix has changed to include more collectibles, along with the current Shabby Chic trend, and decorative and designer objects. Whatever your collecting interest, you can’t go wrong at one of Walters shows. But don’t forget, that the many local dealers who show their wares at these shows, can be found every day, in their shops, with the same high quality, interesting objects that draw many people to the shows. If you’re not visiting your local antiques shops on a regular basis, there’s a good chance that you’ll miss out on that piece you’ve been look-ing for. Get out and look around, it’s sitting right there on the shelf!

When long established Moriarty’s Antiques, one of Salt Lake City’s most prominent antique shopping destinations, came available, new owner Monica Zoltanski, who started her antiques career with a booth the shop, grabbed the chance to bring her kind of antiquing to the city. When you walk into Capital City Antiques Mall (formerly Moriarty’s), it doesn’t take long to realize that there’s a new sheriff in town. Monica Zoltanski, former proprie-tor of Sisters Home, has brought that same patented sense of style & design to her latest venture in the antiques industry.

ANTIQUES COLLECTORS DICTIONARY
Have you ever wondered just what the heck your antiques dealer was talking about? Well, thisdictionary of antiques terms will help you turn that gibberish into useful information. We startedright where you would guess, with A, and each issue we will go on to the next letter. ARE YOU HAVINGA GOOD TIME?
It’s really quite simple, a collection is agroup of things gathered or collected, and aperson is a collector when they bring itemstogether into a group. But, for most of us,collecting is about more than just things thatwe can identify, categorize, organize anddisplay. While People collect for manydifferent reasons, we all share one commonthread. The truth is, most people collect, because it is just plain fun!
Regardless of what you collect, how youcollect can dictate the pleasure you get fromthe experience. The trend in recent years,of shopping for antiques and collectibles onthe internet, seems to have sucked much ofthe joy out of the hobby. For me, and manycollectors, the pleasure is really found in thehunt. Rambling from antiques shop toantiques shop, savoring the ambience, conversation and especially that heartstopping jolt, when you encounter that item, that you simply have to own.
Contrasted with the mundane experience ofscouring web pages and lists, one wondersif this is really the same hobby at all. In thisnew “information age”, we have alldiscovered that things that at one timeseemed scarce, are in fact quite plentifulwhen aggregated into a nationalmarketplace. Anything you want can quiteeasily be found. However, when theexperience of collecting is stripped ofpersonal contact, and the sheer pleasuregenerated by the hunt, it becomes more akinto ordering shirts from a JC Penny catalogue, than “antiquing”. It’s just one more thingto stick on your shelf. If this is what it hascome to, I’d just as soon have that new shirt.
The good news is that it’s not too late torecapture that fun and excitement that madeus love collecting. Utah has over 60 antiquesshops, all staffed with owners patientlywaiting at their sales counter, wantingnothing more than to show us a good time.
So, lets all try to put a little life back intothis hobby that we so much love. Turn offthat computer, and visit one of the manyinteresting antiques & collectible shopsscattered throughout the state. You neverknow what you’ll find. But, I guarantee thatwhen you encounter a trinket that causesthat little twitter in your stomach, you’llknow that you’ve found the reason youstarted to collect to begin with.
See you out there!
