Intermountain’s recently announced new President and

CEO, A. Marc Harrison, MD, will join Intermountain Aug. 1

to begin transioning to his new role. Intermountain’s

current President and CEO, Charles W. Sorenson, MD, will

connue to lead the organizaon unl he reres Oct. 15.

Our Board of Trustees unanimously selected Dr. Harrison as

the new Intermountain leader. He has had a disnguished

career in pediatric crical care, and he most recently held

posions as Chief of Internaonal Business Development

for Cleveland Clinic, headquartered in Ohio, and CEO of

Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, which is a mul‐specialty hospital and part of Mubadala

Healthcare’s network of healthcare facilies. He previously served as Chief Medical

Operaons Officer for Cleveland Clinic, where he was responsible for a broad range of

clinical operaons worldwide, and as Chairman of Pediatric Crical Care.

“Dr. Harrison has impressive experience and a proven track record of leading health

organizaons and is immensely qualified to build on our legacy and oversee

Intermountain as we connue the work of transforming healthcare to meet the

challenges ahead,” Dr. Sorenson said. “I have tremendous confidence in his abilies.

Dr. Harrison will be an excellent fit for Intermountain. He embodies our Values, and is

enthusiasc about our Mission of helping people live the healthiest lives possible® and

our Vision to be a model healthcare system.”

A naonal search was conducted, and there was a high level of interest in this posion

from talented leaders within Intermountain and around the country. “The naonal

interest in this posion is a tribute to Dr. Sorenson’s exceponal leadership,” said Sco

Anderson, Chair of Intermountain’s Board of Trustees. “He’s built upon the legacy of

the leaders who came before him and established a growing local, naonal, and

internaonal reputaon for Intermountain as an industry leader and model for

evidence‐based medicine that provides high‐quality healthcare at sustainable costs.”

Dr. Harrison earned an undergraduate degree at Haverford College and a medical

degree at Dartmouth Medical School. He completed a residency and an internship in

pediatric crical care through the University of Utah School of Medicine, working

primarily in the crical care units of Intermountain’s Primary Children’s Hospital. His

wife, Dr. Mary Carole Harrison, served as the chief resident in the same program. Dr.

Marc Harrison later received a Masters of Medical Management from Carnegie Mellon

University and completed addional study in management at Harvard Business School.

Dr. Sorenson will remain with Intermountain as Founding Director of the

Intermountain Healthcare Leadership Instute, which is expected to open in 2018.

“I cannot adequately express the gratude I have for my experience at Intermountain

Healthcare,” Dr. Sorenson said. “From my first days washing dishes at LDS Hospital as a

teenager to my pracce as a surgeon and my administrave roles, I have loved my

work. Most parcularly I have valued the opportunies it has given me to work with

people of such tremendous talent and character, who have dedicated themselves to

making a difference in the lives of all they encounter.”

Data‐sharing consorum to accelerate cancerprecision medicine development

Intermountain Healthcare has joined a new consorum to advance cancer care

through data sharing and to increase paent access to clinical trials. The new

consorum, the Oncology Precision Network (OPN), was recently announced by

Intermountain, Stanford Cancer Instute, Providence Health & Services, and Syapse (a

soware company). Responding to U.S. Vice President Joe Biden’s Cancer Moonshot

Iniave, the OPN consorum will share, as appropriate, aggregated cancer genomics

data through an advanced soware plaorm, rapidly bringing the most promising

treatment insights to cancer paents and physicians.

This unprecedented collaboraon between two of the naon’s largest not‐for‐profit

health systems, one of the country’s premier academic research centers, and a leading

precision medicine soware company, aims to find breakthroughs in cancer care by

leveraging previously untapped real‐world cancer genomics data while preserving

privacy, security, and data rights.

The vast majority of cancer paents are not treated by major cancer centers and don’t

benefit from high‐volume‐based analycs. The OPN consorum will open access to

precision medicine and clinical trials to previously underserved cancer paents and

Opioid overdoses have reached epidemic levels in the naon and in Utah. To help

prevent overdose deaths, Intermountain now offers Naloxone—a lifesaving medicaon

that reverses the effects of opioids—at pharmacies in our hospitals and clinics

throughout Utah. Anyone can purchase Naloxone at our clinics without a doctor’s

prescripon.

In Utah, deaths from prescripon medicaons increased nearly 400 percent from 2000

to 2014, according to a recent report by the Centers for Disease Control and

Prevenon. Opioids include prescripon pain medicaons and heroin, and their use is

so prevalent that earlier this year, Governor Gary Herbert and the Utah Legislature

declared drug overdose deaths a public health emergency.

Offering Naloxone is part of a statewide mul‐faceted approach Intermountain is

supporng along with other health partners. More informaon is available here.

In another effort, Intermountain is partnering in a behavioral health pilot program

with the Utah Department of Health and health agencies in Davis and Weber Counes

to idenfy and help paents at risk for abusing opiates.

Intermountain Healthcare President and CEO Charles Sorenson, MD, shared opmism

with University of Utah School of Medicine graduates as he delivered their

commencement address on May 20.

During his speech—tled “It’s the Best of Times. Period!”—Dr. Sorenson menoned

three reasons he is opmisc about the future of healthcare: 1) rapidly expanding

medical knowledge will get to the front line of care much more quickly; 2) innovaons

will vastly increase our capabilies; and 3) team‐based care is coming of age.

In a recent blog, the school’s Dean, Vivian S. Lee, MD, reflected on Dr. Sorenson’s

influence on healthcare and why he was chosen to address the U’s graduates. “Dr.

Sorenson is the kind of healthcare leader we hope our students will one day emulate.”

Inside our Annual Report: Recently expanded trauma services at Intermountain’s Dixie

Regional Medical Center meant lifesaving treatment was close to home for St. George

realtor John Ames when he broke his pelvis aer falling 38 feet into a ravine last year.

A Washington County search‐and‐rescue team carefully navigated the difficult terrain

where John fell, strapped him to a body board, and lowered him 195 feet to where

Intermountain’s Life Flight helicopter had flown from its base at Dixie Regional. “Once

they got me to the ground, I was on the helicopter and to the hospital in less than 10

minutes,” Ames said.

Orthopedic trauma surgeon Warren Buerfield, MD, sees great benefits for paents

who are able to remain close to home for treatment and recovery. “When paents are

injured, they’re under a lot of physical and emoonal stress. Their family, friends, and

social support become very important to their recovery,” he said.

At Dixie Regional, Dr. Buerfield repaired serious breaks in Ames’s pelvis and lower

back. Prior to Dr. Buerfield’s arrival, paents with pelvic fractures were sent to

another trauma center. Ames is now back to working full‐me and is living an acve

life. “I will be forever grateful to Intermountain Healthcare, Dixie Regional Medical

Center, and gracious donaons from the community for providing these services here,”

he said.

A video and more informaon about Ames’s experience are available online. Other

stories and key informaon are available in Intermountain’s complete interacve

online Annual Report.
