Today’s event provides a huge variety of possibilities to someone making the transition from Military to Civilian life. These include employment, training, networking and support opportunities for Armed Forces personnel during all stages of their resettlement and beyond.

If you’re not sure where you want to work or what you want to do when leaving the forces, a careers fair can introduce you to a range of possibilities. Just don’t engage exhibitors in conversation unless you have at least some idea of what they do. Keep a copy of this magazine with you for reference and chat to someone on the BFRS stand if you need a bit more guidance.

Richard could you tell us as bit about your time in the Armed Forces?

I served in Northern Ireland extensively, I served in the First Gulf War and the Balkans and in Afghanistan..

You joined the Army at a young age, what inspired you to join?

I left school one day and joined the Army the next day, but I was always going to do so, there was never really a question in my mind about doing anything else, from my earliest memories I was going to be a soldier.

What is your most memorable time from your days in the Army?

Good question. I’ve got very many, the

highlights of my career were commanding infantry soldiers on operations and that ranged from commanding an infantry platoon when I was 19 years old through to commanding the British Forces in Afghanistan back in 2003 and all of those occasions were the high points of my career, commanding troops and doing so on operations.

How did you find your transition?

Very straight forward. I spent the last 5 years of my military career mostly working in the cabinet office in London. I was working for the joint intelligence committee and I was virtually the only military person there, so I was in an organisation that was effectively staffed

by civilian civil servants and so on, so that was in some ways a kind of a transition from what I had been used to my whole life of military service to the civilian world, so I found it quite easy when I did leave and went into corporate.

Do you think the government are doing enough to support the Armed Forces Community and do you think a lot of the companies signing the Armed Forces Covenant are just doing it for a PR exercise?

You do get some companies that are very, very good, the company that I worked for which was called Canary Wharf group were extremely good at supporting the military covenant in many ways, for example in employing ex-soldiers in large numbers and also very helpful and constructive when some went on to join the reserves and were serving on operations. You do get many good companies but many do it simply because it’s a box ticked, a PR exercise.

I think it’s quite hard for the government to enforce, or to force companies to be more pro-active, to be more positive towards forces leavers, but I do think that the government needs to do more to make life easier in the transition, this is not about jobs so much but it can, compel councils, hospitals, schools and the vital services soldiers and their families need when they leave and to compel them

to make life easier for soldiers when they are

leaving, often when they leave they are coming into the unknown and they don’t know the system and the system is not sympathetic towards them and quite often they will be dumped at the bottom of a housing list. I think in those areas the government can do a lot more directly, but in terms of employment I don’t think that the government can force companies to act in a certain way, what it can do, maybe they should consider such things as giving preference to people leaving the armed forces in public employment, service leavers are not like anyone else leaving any other form of employment even government employment because soldiers are sent around the world without any choice in where they are going to go, at short notice for long periods of time, they are living a very disruptive life, no other employee is in that position, not just soldiers but all members of the forces and also when they are doing their job in many cases they are putting their life on the line. They’ve gone

A soldier leaving the forces does need to have a point of contact who can advise on which charitable organisation he needs to contact if necessary and on how to tackle the system of living outside. That needs to be a supervised system, both in terms of preparing soldiers to leave, and also helping them when they are out. The worrying thing is there are a very large number of unemployed ex-soldiers who done a good job in the Army and somehow can’t do a good job outside, and also a lot of homeless and a lot in prison. The government has a responsibility to cut down on those numbers

because in many cases, not all cases, people end up homeless, unemployed or in prison because of their experience in the forces, they often go through so much trauma, so much experience not just negative but positive, but experience that affects their lives and the institutional nature of the forces particular with people who have served for a long time make it hard to move into Civvy street.

After the attacks in Paris you stated we needed boots on the ground in Syria, do we have the capacity for this anymore and what do you think of the defence cuts?

I think the government deliberately cut the armed forces to such an extent that it cannot operate effectively on any large scale at all but particularly in a combat situation. It hasn’t happened by accident it’s deliberately cut defences so that it cannot deploy forces because the government wants the excuse when the pressure comes from our allies like

further than anyone else is expected to do, so there should be some kind of compensation for that. There should be allowances made, there should be preferential treatment given and I particularly think that if anything the greatest possible preferential treatment should be given to soldiers who are wounded in action, and their families with regards to housing & medical treatment, and in employment the government should certainly go out of its way to ensure that wounded soldiers get good employment when they leave.

There are so many individual organisations supporting the AFC, do you think there should be more cohesion?

It’s a complicated issue, the Army have set up centres around the country in garrison towns where they can go for help, which is a step in the right direction but that has problems as it only really covers limited geographical areas.

America or from the public to take action. The government wants to be able to say we can’t do it because we don’t have the resources. But of course anything like that can be reversed if the government is serious about trying to destroy the Islamic State, which it needs to be, it can put the extra resources in and build up the armed forces to a necessary degree and destroy the Islamic State. This is not something that has never been done before, in 1939 we had a very small Army and nevertheless we put up a very effective fight against the Germans building our army up over a number of years.

You don’t have to assume that because the armed forces have been cut to an absurd level, which they have, that they can’t be changed, which they can be. They should be.

The government were hoping to bolster our Armed Forces with 30,000 reservists but they are having trouble getting them signed up, why do you think this is?

They will struggle with the numbers because the whole concept of expanding reservists at this particular time is deeply flawed. The package available for reservists is not adequate to attract people nor does the law allow as it does in the US, the government to compel employers to release reservists and to continue to hold their job open. There is not the long term tradition of operational deployment of the reservists in the UK as there is in the US, they based it on the US system but in completely different circumstances. I knew from the very beginning when I first heard of

the hair brain scheme, I knew it wouldn’t work and it’s been shown not to work and I am not the only one, many people knew it wouldn’t work. Also the Army is having difficulty recruiting soldiers for the regular Army not because there aren’t plenty of people out there who are willing to join, it’s because the recruiting organisation is incompetent.

You’ve been very outspoken about women in combat roles, why is this?

It is completely flawed, it is not just a matter of opinion it’s a matter of absolute common

sense and fact. It is wrong to want to put women in the infantry, my point on that has been brought out as being confirmed by the fact that I have had many debates in the media, on the radio on the television on the internet and face to face with a range of people who have a different view to me, that ranges from Admirals, Generals, female senior officers, male senior officers civilians even my own kids, who are both daughters by the way. And not one of them has given me any sensible argument as to why this should happen except for equal opportunities, I agree that equal opportunities are important and applies in the vast majority of cases, but when you’re talking about the defence of the country and people’s lives being at stake, then equal opportunities does not come before combat effectiveness. Combat effectiveness must dominate and I’m afraid that by introducing women into the infantry which they will do that will reduce combat effectiveness. Of course there are

I would very strongly encourage anyone leaving the armed forces at any rank to take part in the events

a very few women who will 1. Be capable of doing an infantryman’s job and 2. Who will want to do it? So there will be a very small number who are capable and want to, and to achieve that, because when you tell the army to do something they do it, whatever it is you tell them to attack the Germans in France or you tell them to go and kick the Taliban out of Afghanistan they go and do it. They might get it right or wrong but they will do it. They will also bring women into the infantry and to do that they will reduce standards, so the overall standard of the infantry will come down, they won’t say that, they won’t declare it, but that’s exactly what will happen.

Do you think this is a box ticking exercise?

I think there is an element of people wanting to press this kind of agenda, I don’t mean everyone here, but some people want to press this kind of agenda in order to undermine the armed forces, and they might portray it for equal opportunities but actually it’s because they want to undermine the armed forces and that is a widespread left wing agenda which we’ve seen in recent days, we’ve seen that coming out in the horrific number of criminal cases being brought against members of the armed forces for their actions in Iraq. It’s driven by left wing activists.

Going back to the women, one thing that I think is a useful comparison, if we can have women in the front line, why can’t we have women in the front row of the England rugby team, why aren’t they in the men’s team why are the teams not mixed, for obvious reasons same as premiership football, same with boxing same with most sports because we’re different. Women are better than men but they’re different to men. Women are not physically stronger than men but they’re better I accept they’re better, of course they are better. I used to be married my wife told me she was better than me.

I’m not in any way questioning the bravery of many women and those women who serve in the armed forces in my experience do a great job and I’ve known many of them and worked with many of them, they do a fantastic job and they do it well and they often do it bravely and some of them have received gallantry awards for doing it. I’m not in any way questioning or criticising them. I just think that there are some things that they should not be doing and the infantry is one of them, but certainly I’ve no doubt you will get some that join that are very brave but it will still undermine our effectiveness. And it will happen, no one’s going to listen to me or the other few people that argue this, it’s going to happen.

What do you think of recent events concerning the criminal cases being brought to light?

I think the government are throwing these soldiers to the wolves, they need to defend them from these kind of actions. We are talking about 1250 litigation cases against the Army for its actions in Iraq against soldiers in the Army. There is absolutely no possibility that the vast majority of those cases are genuine. If you had that number, then it would mean 1 of 2 things. 1. It would mean that there was orders given by the prime minister of this country to the Army to act in a criminal way in Iraq, that’s one option, the second option is that the British Army has suffered the greatest breakdown of discipline, leadership and moral in its history because those things wouldn’t have happened unless there was a breakdown of leadership now neither of those situations apply. The government did not order criminal activity and order has not broken down, what’s happened is that left wing lawyers in the UK have gone out to Iraq and have deliberately solicited complainants to bring legal action against British soldiers, it’s for greed and political purposes, it’s very easy to go to a country like Iraq and persuade somebody to make a complaint, what’s the problem for them. It costs them nothing, they get paid by the British government so that’s the reason, now having said that I don’t argue that there will be

some of these claims that will be genuine, there will have been illegal or improper activity carried out in Iraq during that time, some but a few isolated few, most of them due to the stresses of battle and those few are always going to be there. No one’s perfect, no organisation is perfect, war is a horrific situation, and you will always get things happening. I don’t deny that but the number, the volume is just ridiculous. The government should be stopping it. There’s only one reason it’s happening and that’s because the government is paying for it.

Why is the government doing this?

Successive governments have done this and the reason is they are bound into the human rights act, because they have lamely accepted the European human rights legislation, which really forces them to do it and they haven’t got the guts to stand up and do what the French have done and the Spanish and some other governments have done and said, we are not applying human rights law to the battlefield we are using the laws of armed conflict. That is what they should do, they should stand up and reject it and that is the only reason it is happening and one of the problems with the Conservative government, is that they are so eager to show off their liberal and left wing credentials to their critics to try and expand their attractiveness across the electorate.

Back to transition, what unique skillset to you think service leavers have to offer employers?

Obviously some of them have specific skills that they’ve gained in terms of arms and technical trades and so on in the Army so those sort of skills speak for themselves but in general terms, virtually everyone leaving the services will come out with a very, very good work ethic so an employer is taking on somebody who is going to be working hard, who is going to be dedicated, is going to do their job and is going to be reliable and dependable. They are taking on somebody who has been working in a disciplined organisation, who is disciplined, who gets up on time, who gets to work on time, who is not sick unless they are genuinely sick and therefore they are taking on reliable, dependable, well-disciplined individuals. They will normally be loyal, because loyalty has

been bred into them, as it is essential in the forces, so they will be loyal employees who will support their employers and any company they work for. They will generally be physically fit and if you are physically fit whatever job you are doing even if it is a sedentary job you do it better if you are physically fit. And they will have unrivalled experience of life which again depends what the job is, but if you’ve had a broad experience of some extreme situations in some very dangerous situations, it makes you more resourceful, it makes you perhaps more persistent in what you’re doing even when things get difficult you somehow push on. Those are the main things. In my civilian capacity I have employed many ex-soldiers and they have all made a remarkable contribution to the company that I employed them for, they’ve never let me down. They’ve done a great job and I would strongly recommend a service leaver to any employer, they would be a valued member of the workforce pretty much in every single case, very rare you would find someone who wasn’t.

What advice would you give to a service leaver making that transition into Civvy street?

The important things are to be able to sell yourself to the employer. And to do that you’ve got to have a good effective CV, which should explain how your military experience converts into the kind of job you are looking for, and there are many skills which are comparative, but they have to be spelt out really because you wouldn’t expect an employer to necessarily understand. So a good CV which is adapted for every job you apply for. It’s no good sending out a blanket CV. Secondly, part of selling yourself is interview, and again soldiers don’t really do interviews, once you’ve been through the selection process to get into the Army that’s probably the last interview you’ve done. Practice at interviews is very important, and understanding what an employer is looking for during an interview. Most employers are probably not looking for somebody who comes across as a good soldier, because they won’t really understand how it translates. They shouldn’t pretend to be someone they are not but they should really be thinking more in the terms of how you deal with a civilian role rather

than a soldier, treating an interviewer in the same way you would treat a senior officer in the army is probably not the right approach. Careful research, and practice your interview technique. I think the other thing is soldiers should not under sell themselves, there is a tendency to undersell and that is another area the government, the Army or the MOD should help them with.

I’ve worked with some pretty senior employers in civilian companies and many soldiers who were comparatively junior in rank in the army could do their job standing on their head. Because of the pretty lengthy rank structure in the armed forces, so many different ranks, that soldiers, unless they’re leaving at a pretty senior level in the forces, they will think that they need a junior position in the civilian world but that’s not necessarily the case. Let’s say a good experienced Corporal from the Army could easily be able to do many middle management positions in a civilian company and wouldn’t have to start at the bottom That’s easier said than done but I think they should set their sights higher than perhaps they normally would but in order to achieve what they want to achieve then they have to do a lot of work to prepare for it. As I said they’ve got to have a good way of selling themselves and above all I think a way of equating their military skills to the civilian job they are trying to achieve.

A lot of service leavers don’t actually realise the skillset they have and the hardest part is conveying those skills to the employers.

Exactly, and the other thing I would say and it probably even applies more to people who left the Army after quite a long time is, I’ve heard people leaving the forces say “these civvies’ in this company don’t know how to do things properly, they have to do it the army way” and that’s a natural thing to think but it’s not the right way to think because the Army way isn’t the right way for the civilians, yes a lot of stuff is transferrable and you can use a lot of your skills and experience but you’ve got to adapt it to the civilian world and you cannot expect everyone to change for you. You’re not going to change anything, you’ve got to adapt to the civilian ways whether you like it or not, and if they go in with that attitude they won’t do very well.

You’re now a prolific journalist and a motivational speaker, you do a lot of media interviews, and how did the Army prepare you for this?

In terms of public speaking as an Army officer, even as a junior and it’s not just officers its other ranks as well, anyone who is a commander in the army at any level needs to be able to stand up and speak to people confidently, to inspire them, and to motivate them, and to get them to follow it and if you can’t do that, then you can’t be a leader and I had 30 years’ experience of doing that and yes that’s extremely beneficial to my work I do in public speaking. As I said in relation to jobs you have got to adapt it to different circumstances, but the basic experience is important. The other areas, things like media interviews etc. again those I think being a commander in the Army gives you experience and self- confidence, I didn’t do much media training when I was in the Army as we don’t do many interviews, but another thing that helped during my military career was writing. As an Army officer you do a lot of writing, and I did more than most because that last 5 years I mentioned I was working in the cabinet office. My job was writing, I was writing intelligence assessments, that time in particular was very beneficial. In the military you have to write concisely, accurately and clearly. Although the style of writing obviously between the forces for example and writing a book or an article for a magazine or a newspaper is different, but it goes back to the point I made several times if you’ve got the basic skills and the basic experience and you can adapt

it to different circumstances then that’s extremely helpful.

You yourself attended a BFRS event in Aldershot a few years ago, do you think it’s important that service leavers do attend an event like the BFRS?

Yes. I think anything that gives them the opportunity to network which might lead directly to a job or to get an understanding of what the employers are looking for, that is very important. Networking is the best way to get a job rather than going through a selection process which involves someone on some computer probably scanning thousands of CV’s. It’s much better to do it on a personal level and also at the events they give you advice on how to approach employers, on interviews and CV’s, that is very important I would very strongly encourage anyone leaving the armed forces at any rank to take part in the events.

Tell us something about Richard Kemp that most people wouldn’t know?

After a lot of prodding Richard admitted to being a fully signed up feminist thanks to his daughters, with a love of Beethoven.

My daughter has a very strong character and I am incapable of resisting it. I’ve been in the infantry most of my life, I’ve fought terrorists, I’ve been on operations many times been in dangerous situations and I would like to think I can withstand virtually any enemy, any pressure, but one thing I cannot withstand is my daughters. I am completely under their command.

the right training course to enable you to

achieve your future career goals. It is good to

understand that there is no one road to take,

as each person’s career situation is unique.

Nonetheless, training for any career path is

always important.

The training you choose is not an end in itself but part of the route along your resettlement transition. It requires careful planning and consideration before committing any time and funding to it. You should do your own research but also use the knowledge and expertise of your peers, ex-colleagues, Resettlement Officer, the Career Transition Partnership (CTP) and others in your network.

Anything you can do to leave a mark, highlight yourself apart from the crowd or better direct your career path is worthwhile. When you are thinking about your next career you might as well put the best foot forward and add something helpful to your CV and also to your own knowledge.

The question is whether you should learn new skills in your current area, move in a totally different direction and learn something entirely new, or focus on, business, people, financial or non-labour skills.

How do I decide what training to undertake?There are many training organisations in the UK, offering a wide range of courses. These may be advertised in newspapers, on various websites, and in a range of other places. When you enrol on a course, you are usually investing a lot of time and money, so it is important that you make the best decision.

Initially, you need to identify the qualifications and training organisations are looking

for, as the learning you undertake has to be appropriate to the sector you are aiming to work in. This information can be easily obtained by looking at employment vacancies on the internet and seeing what the required qualifications and training are.

You will already have valuable soft skills from your military career that will be transferable to a new employer. These include, leadership, teamwork, reliability and time management.

Whilst employers greatly value these ‘soft skills’, they need supporting by vocational training to prove that you also have practical or commercial knowledge.

If you’re looking to continue in a similar field to your job in the military, concentrate on the vocational accreditation that proves your existing knowledge and skills, and that can be applied in a commercial environment. For example, if you are aiming to work in Project Management and have a military background in that area, then you will need the commercial vocabulary and a recognised qualification, such as the APMG PRINCE2 Project Management qualification.

It is important to consider whether a course has formal accreditation. If a course is accredited it will be recognised by government, training organisations and industry. Formal recognition is very important if you are completing a course in the hope of gaining employment in a particular industry. If you do a course which is not recognised it may not be accepted by employers.

General considerationsSome other points to consider when deciding on a training provider.

• Shop around to see if the course represents value for money. As well as fees, does the training provider offer value add services such as careers advice?

• Find out about their policies for refunds, or appealing if you disagree with an assessment decision.

So, you enthusiastically embarked on your job search and your PC has been on fire over the last few months, sending out hundreds of copies of your CV to recruiters, companies, job boards and CV databases.

You thought you’d have had at least some response by now, but oh no, not one reply to acknowledge your email has popped into your inbox. No calls from enthusiastic recruiters wanting to snap you up - let alone any invitations to interview – leaving you feeling down and disappointed and wondering if you’ll ever get a job at this rate!

The first 30 seconds of a job interview are the most important – so if you want to be a cut above the rest you need to be on the ball. Rob Yeung, a business psychologist, maintains that an interview is all about the three Ps. “You need to prepare, you need to practise, and then, on the day, you need to perform.

Why do you never hear back?The other day I had an email from someone I don’t know copying me in on their CV. Well that’s not unusual seeing as I receive lots of CVs every week to review. But this was different. They weren’t asking for a CV Review, but must have thought I was a recruiter as the email had been sent to a number of recruiters and HR Managers within the Oil and Gas Industry. Yep, you guessed it – the email was blank, no words of introduction or why they were sending their CV! It had been emailed to about 30 people, all of whom would probably have wondered, like me, what on earth they were meant to do with it except to press the DELETE button. After all, the CV itself needed a great deal of work too!

If you are going to send your CV out to into the big wide world, put some effort in!• Don’t throw mud at the wall and send out your CV to lots of people at the same

time. It’s not a numbers game! Think Quality not Quantity! Make the reader feel as if you’ve properly researched their company or vacancies, done your homework and put some effort into your job search and contact them individually.

• Write a compelling Cover Letter to entice the recipient into reading your CV and copy/paste this to the body of the email so they see it as soon as the email hits their inbox. Give them a reason to bother to open your CV and read it.

• Make sure your CV is absolutely top notch so that it quickly and clearly tells the reader why they should interview YOU above other candidates. If you’re struggling to do this yourself, don’t take any chances, waste your time or miss out on opportunities by submitting something which isn’t right, get help from a professional (see below).

Can you imagine how many CVs and Applications recruiters/hiring managers receive every day? Do you really, honestly think they have time to reply to them all individually? Sorry, but it’s just not going to happen! A few years ago in another role, I was recruiting to fill a part time vacancy with the company I managed. I received more than 150 CVs! I barely had time to read them all, so if they didn’t make an early impression they landed in the shredder anyway, but I would never have had time to reply to all of them. If I allowed just 5 minutes for each one, typing an email or calling them up, it would have taken me over 12 hours work!

Be Realistic If the CV and Cover Letter had made the right impression and demonstrated that you were a strong fit for the job with the right skills and qualifications, you’d have been short-listed for interview and you’d know about it. If you don’t hear from someone, they’re not being rude or ignorant, they just don’t have enough hours in the day. Either call them up and ask for feedback or get over it, move on and think about what you’ve learned. Maybe your CV needs work or maybe you just weren’t qualified for the job. Most job specs are written with very specific requirements. If the job advert specified you needed 3 -5 years experience in that role and a Degree in Engineering you can’t expect to be short-listed if you haven’t got it. Move on, apply for the jobs you are qualified to do and make sure your CV sells your skills. Better luck next time!

Many people tell me they’ve applied online for a job weeks ago or registered their CV with lots of online databases but haven’t heard anything.

Optimise & Format• Keyword-optimise your CV or Job Application.

Job descriptions and Job Adverts are littered with keywords relevant to the particular skills, experience and qualifications the company requires. Analyse the Job Description and optimise both your CV and Cover Letter so that the system or recruiter picks them up. In other words, tell them what they want to know, not what you want to tell them.

• Be consistent in your formatting of the CV and help the system out. Distinctive formatting is so ‘80’s but automated programmes really don’t care if the CV is pretty with funky fonts and borders. Too much of this and the system may not be able to properly find and dissect your details for storage on the main database, meaning you’re unlikely to come up in any candidate searches. Keep it simple!

I’ve read and written thousands of CVs over the years and it never ceases to amaze me how a CV is substantially different to the candidate’s online profile on LinkedIn, for example.

Be Consistent• Social Media profiles can be very useful tools to get you noticed. Recruiters

are spending more and more time using these databases to identify suitable candidates and check them out, so be consistent and make sure they match your CV.

• Make sure you get noticed on social media for the right reasons. LinkedIn tends to be very business-focused, but Facebook tends to be more social. However, expect employers/recruiters to search the internet to review your foot-print. So, if you don’t want people to access your Facebook, make sure you set your privacy settings. Have a good profile picture which reflects well on you rather than one which could cause embarrassment down the line.

• Set up a professional email address ([email protected]) and avoid funny addresses such as the [email protected]!!

When jobs are advertised, the recruiter/employer will set out the process and what they want from you when you apply. They will expect your CV, Cover Letter or application form in the format they have specified. Anything else is likely to be thrown out! It’s not personal, just business. Following their instructions is the first test. Don’t blow it by rushing to get your CV/Application to them and missing out on some critical things.

Follow the InstructionsFollow the instructions for submitting your CV/Application. If they ask for your email to have “Application for PSD Team Leader 456” in the subject bar then put it in. If they ask for your Cover Letter to give examples of when you have delivered a project, include it. If you can’t follow instructions at this stage, it’s unlikely you’ll be able to if they employed you.

Tell us about your military experience?I spent 5 Years spent in the Royal Artillery from 1994 to 1999. I completed 3 Tours of Bosnia and left rank of Gunner after serving with 19 Regiment RA and 19.5 Battery RHA.

Tell us about your training experience with BMF?Whilst visiting a friend in Brighton in 2007 I tagged along to a British Military Fitness session as a trialists to see what it was all about.

There was nothing like this in Leeds (to the best of my knowledge back then). I really enjoyed the session and the concept so made contact with head office about getting things up and running in Leeds.

I then decided to approach BMF about becoming an Instructor. In 2008 I went to

Cardiff to partake in the BMF Academy fitness qualification so that I could start working for BMF as an Instructor.

Tell us what it’s like to work for BMF?I’m now a Full time member of staff managing my own 3 venues in Leeds and assisting 2 other local Park Managers in running their parks in South Leeds, Bradford and Harrogate.

I am given the autonomy to manage my work, parks and staff my own way with very little interference, but always know that help is only a phone call away if needed. The sessions are great fun to lead, they keep me fit and the exposure to so many very varied individuals ensures I am always learning. I’ve enjoyed the journey from fitness industry newbie to where I am now. It is the only job I have ever had that I am fully passionate about…even after 7 years!

Thousands of jobs are set to be created as work starts on London’s ‘super sewer’.

The 25km Thames Tideway Tunnel - the biggest infrastructure project ever under taken by the UK water industry - will make London’s sewerage network fit for the 22nd century and will help prevent the millions of tonnes of sewage pollution that currently discharge into the tidal River Thames every year.

The project will create more than 4,000 direct sustainable jobs at the peak of construction and another 5,000 jobs indirectly. It will be offering hundreds of apprenticeships and work placements, is committed to employing

local people, and will be creating a never-before seen surge in the river economy through marine employment opportunities.

In December, work began on building a new pier at Blackfriars to make way for construction of the Thames Tideway Tunnel. Main work is due to start in 2016.

Scott Young, Skills and Employment Manager at Tideway, said: “The main benefit of working on the Thames Tideway Tunnel is the opportunity to be part of this landmark project that will clean up the River Thames for future generations and reconnect Londoners with the river.

“Such a large-scale construction project will require thousands of workers across 223

different occupations. With skills gaps currently facing the construction industry

it’s vital we actively promote the huge range of jobs available on projects like ours to a wide audience, including those who are looking to retrain or might not have considered a career in construction.

“The project is committed to all staff on site being paid the London Living Wage and to training and upskilling our workforce. The project is also aiming to deliver transformational health safety and wellbeing performance which is a vital component of being a great place to work.”

Skills gaps have been identified in areas including underground workers, marine

logistics, construction trade supervisors, plant operatives and civil engineers.

Mr Young said: “In general these gaps identified could be addressed through short term training. The minimum standard required on-site is typically NVQ level 2 which can be completed in less than six months although it would take longer to develop more advanced skills.”

The majority of roles will be within the three main works contractor teams and their supply chain but all project roles will be advertised on a single jobs portal and promoted through local jobs brokerage organisations and job centre plus.

The Royal British Legion is the UK’s largest Armed Forces charity. We help members of the Royal Navy, British Army, Royal Air Force, Reservists, veterans and their families all year round. We also campaign to improve their lives, organise the Poppy Appeal and remember the fallen.

Leaving the Armed Forces is part of Service, but the Legion has many ways to make that transition easier. Civvy Street is a website that puts masses of information and resources for finding a job or changing your career at your fingertips. There is plenty of useful information that’s available to everyone, but if you register for free, you can get access to a collection of online training courses that you can personalise to fit your needs. There is also a CV builder, which is an easy way to create the best CV you possibly can - completely free.

Civvy Street lists up-to-date job vacancies that are easy to search, and you can even search for jobs specifically for ex-Service personnel. If you register with Civvy Street, the site can also match you with suitable employers. The website also lists vacancies for the partners and dependants of serving personnel – such as in or around Ministry of Defence locations.

The Royal British Legion Employment Support Grant Scheme is a welfare scheme funded

by the annual Poppy Appeal, specifically designed to help low skilled and unemployed Legion beneficiaries with assistance to achieve a sustainable employment outcome. For more information, visit the Funding Schemes section of the Legion website.

I have always been fanatical about learning real life skills in a way that you will remember ...

My 12 year relationship with Nuco Training began on my way to

the first week of University, where I made a detour en-route, missing

the beginning of fresher’s week, to attend one of Nuco Training’s

First Aid Instructor Courses. The course simplified and honed in on

what we are looking for from all first aid skills. I appreciated the

hands on practical approach to teaching and learning and the quality

of resources and support material. This qualification has enabled

me to continually gain

clients that renew

their training with me

throughout University

and until present day.

Nuco supported

me through my first

courses as an instructor

and gave me the

exposure to deliver

training to multinational

organisations; they boosted my confidence in the classroom by

sharing new teaching ideas. They ensure I always know the latest

industry news, with an experienced instructor training team on hand

to guide and support me.

Since moving to the South West I have gained considerable

experience in varied pre-hospital settings. I am into my 9th year as a

lifeboat crewman. I have also been fortunate enough to be invited to

many national events providing water safety or medical support

to participants.

I have spent five full summer seasons on North Cornwall

beaches Lifeguarding, seeing minor and major first aid incidents on

a daily basis, I took the decision to further my training in Cape Town,

South Africa, qualifying as an Institute of Health Care Development

Ambulance Technician.

This training made me reflect on my own and

others practices. One of the lasting memories is

not about the instructor’s experience and stories,

but the student’s ability to care for and manage

their patients. Since returning from South Africa

I have thought about providing best patient care

and resilience in pre-hospital settings. As such

I have started up Rescue Respect, identifying

needs and developing products for the pre-

hospital settings.

12 years on Nuco Training continues to

support me with their professional and forward thinking approach

to First Aid training, with continually updated resources, CPD and

continuous development.

I strongly recommend Nuco to anyone looking to be their own boss.

It is the sort of business you can grow while being employed. Equally

the instructor course does give you a lot to shout about on your CV,

Registering for ELCs You must complete and submit an application form either in your first twelve months from enlistment or between eight and eight and a half years from enlistment

If you’re unsure if you registered while you were serving, contact ELCAS.

You are not able to apply for ELCs after you have finished serving

Eligibility You are eligible for ELCs if:

• You have accumulated 4 years of service since 1 April 2000 (Lower Tier)

• You have accumulated 8 years of service since 1 April 2000 (Higher Tier)

• If you were Wounded, Injured or Sick (WIS) or Medical Discharged before reaching the four year eligible service then you may still be eligible to claim ELC

If you don’t qualify for ELCs, other organisations like the Royal British Legion can sometimes help fund retraining.

What you can use ELCs for• You can claim up to £1,000 (Lower Tier) or £2,000 (Higher Tier) per financial year

(31st March – 1st April) towards qualifying courses

• ELCs can be used for up to 80% of a course; you have to cover the remaining 20% yourself (you can use your Resettlement Grant for this)

• You can claim 3 times (as long as they are in separate financial years)

• You can use ELCs for up to 10 years from your last day of service

• ELCs can be used towards the costs of tuition fees including VAT

• ELCs cannot be used towards travel, subsistence, accommodation, meals, equipment or course materials where additional fees apply

• You can use one claim for multiple courses, as long as they are linked by a single career goal or industry, and are with the same provider

Qualifying CoursesFor you to be able to yours your ELCs on a course, it must:

• Be from an ELCAS accredited provider (Visit the ELCAS website for a full list)

• Be accredited by NQF or QCF (National Qualification Framework or Qualifications and Credit Framework)

• Result in a qualification which is Level 3 or higher

No rest for #RobOnTheRoad, 2015 has come to an end. However, there was enough working days left in December for me to squeeze in a visit to Aldershot to start promoting the BFRS Aldershot Career Event 2016.

I do like visiting the SHOT! Over the past couple of years I have made some great connections within the Units. The new Garrison Commander was more than welcoming, and was very keen to meet with me and discuss BFRS in more depth. It’s taken me 21 years to meet with a Colonel and actually be offered a brew. Lovely gesture, just no time to drink it.

A Bit about Me in AldershotIn my time in the Army I only ever went to Aldershot for Courses, or whilst on a Shooting team. For those amongst you that have been lucky enough to visit the SHOT for a course, you may have had the pleasure of been accommodated in Clayton Barracks. My memories of Clayton Barracks are very vague, as it was really just somewhere to sleep and wake up.

Something that has confused me over the years is running, running up Queens Avenue. It’s one of the longest roads I have come across in a town, and strange individuals like to run the length of it and turn round at the other end and run back again. There’s a perfectly good Sports Field that can be used to run around, surely that’s more interesting than a straight road?

My initial introduction to the glamorous Aldershot Night Life was interesting. The Pegasus Pub, not your normal squaddie pub, probably because those that drank in this fine establishment were not normal squaddies. After sampling a drop of their fine beer, I swiftly moved onto the Rose (Tiffany’s). This was the pub for those that were married or had serious girlfriends, but would not admit to visiting. As I was single, I thoroughly enjoyed my visit, and I’m sure I may have returned on a later date. I must mention the Rhythm Station, now this was the only Night Club in Aldershot. I will be honest, it was more like a PARA Fight Club and like the Pegasus, not somewhere you spent too long in.

To end this trip down memory lane I bring you to the Queens, situated on the edge of the town close to the Princes Hall. This was the pub you would start your night in and in many cases you would also end your night.

After a night in any town, not just Aldershot, food is always next on the agenda. In 1997 I was attending an Artisan Skills course, and was accommodated in the previously mentioned Clayton Barracks. With only a small NAAFI it was essential to buy some food before leaving town, at this point I had been in the Army 3 years and I had often heard the old and bold talk of the Compass Kebab. It was whilst attending this course I finally met this Compass. On this occasion, it was a Chicken Kebab loaded with unwanted salad. To this day I still have no idea how I walked up Hospital Hill, navigated across roads and at least two perimeter fences. All I can say is, trust the Kebab it will get you home.

On one of my visits to Aldershot whilst representing my units shooting team, I was fortunate enough to be invited into 27 Regiment RLC Officer’s Mess for a brew during NAAFI Break. Bearing in mind I was a Private Soldier at the time, I was a little concerned about the outcome if I had been caught impersonating an Officer. The Rank Slide was on my jacket (2 Pips), it was now time to try and not behave like a Private in Her Majesty’s Army, who had 2 custodial sentences under his belt, reduced in the ranks and lost his LS&GC within the first six months of service.

All was going well in the TV room, chatting away to other Officers including those that had invited me in and promoted me. After a while I sensed that the talk was getting a little out of my league, and I was beginning to make a fool of myself. Lucky for me the OC, who was responsible for my promotion to Lt had noticed the situation I had got myself into. Calmly and without any prior notice, he shouted across the room “Get them Pips off, You don’t deserve them, and get out of this

Mess”. A little annoyed with how he spoke to me and even more so in front of my new friends, I was grateful as it gave me an excuse to get out and get the car warmed up for our get away.

After a little insight into my previous visits to the SHOT, I am now here 18 years after my first visit. Many things have changed within the town, Pubs have gone, the Night Club has gone and the thing that stands out more than anything else, the PARA’s have gone.

at ICIT, with funding available for this year, it is a fantastic opportunity. SFC (Scottish Funding Council) scholarships are available, as well as Fred Olsen Scholarships which also welcome applications from international students.

ICIT boasts a positive relationship with industry, and its graduates have gone on to secure positions in the renewables industry. Aquatera, EMEC, Scotrenewables, European Wind Energy Association, Community Energy Scotland and Natural Power Consultants Ltd are a few of the companies that graduates have secured employment with.

Orcadian Danny Bain, a graduate of Marine Renewable Energy quotes: “Studying an MSc in Marine Renewable Energy in Orkney gave me great insight into the world emerging energy sectors. We were introduced to many industry professionals and organisations as well as receiving academic support throughout the course. After receiving a sponsorship placement for my dissertation with Scotrenewables Tidal Power, I was delighted to be given the opportunity to begin working as Project Co-ordinator for the construction of their SR2000 Device, which is set to be the world’s largest and most powerful tidal turbine”.

Although there are many benefits to learning on-campus the ability to learn in a more flexible way is often more appealing to those considering a career change or need to continue to work whilst studying.

ICIT currently has over 100 Distance Learning students from all over the world from a variety of different career backgrounds.

Saul Thackeray, a distance learning graduate from the MSc Renewable Energy Development programme, explains:

“I graduated in August 2015 with a Masters degree distinction in Renewable Energy Development from Heriot Watt University, through the ICIT Orkney Campus.

I joined the RAF in October 1986 and completed over 25 years, leaving in January 2012. I was primarily an aircrew surveillance sensors operator, flying in the Nimrod MR2 Maritime Patrol Aircraft, from Kinloss, an RAF base in the North East of Scotland. My career took me from operator to team manager, instructor, Squadron executive and finally chief instructor on the replacement MRA4 aircraft, which was unfortunately cancelled in the Strategic Defence and Security Review of 2010. After achieving all I could in the RAF I began looking outside the Service for a second career.

Hoping to remain living and working in Scotland I began to research developing sectors and very soon identified the enormous potential of renewables. My interest lay in the relative infancy of the sector, the obvious importance of its development and the great possibilities it could offer. Even prior to leaving the RAF, I was able to complete a PDA (Professional

I have enjoyed the study material immensely. It covers a wide variety of subjects from production of energy, economics, ecology, specific renewable technology, development appraisal and much more. Throughout the Course you are encouraged to conduct research and expand on the material provided which opened my eyes to the wealth of invention and success that has already been achieved across the globe.

In 2014 I attended the All Energy Conference, in Aberdeen and was excited to see the wealth of industry and research that is being conducted in pursuit of renewable energy development. It also spurned me on to identifying the potential roles I might wish to fill. As a non-engineer you may think that the ‘energy’ industry is out of reach but although the sector relies heavily on engineers there is a host of other essential roles for those with the soft skills military personnel take for granted. I hope to move into either, education, consultancy or an aspect of the project planning regime, where I can adapt my management and organisational abilities, developed in the RAF, to an emerging industry I believe I will find interesting, challenging and immensely rewarding”.

This gave me an appetite for more study and after talking to a number of individuals from within the industry, I decided that a suitable route into the renewables sector, without direct experience, was with a credible qualification. I applied to join the MSc RED programme with Heriot Watt University and the ICIT Orkney Campus, as a distant learner in October 2012.

The military provided me with a generous funding program (Enhanced Learning Credits) which paid up to £2000 per year for any 3 years study. After using 1 of these Credits to part fund the Prince 2 Project Managers qualification, I maximised the other 2 for this MSc.

Whilst applying for this Degree I managed to transition into a job that required many of the skills obtained in the RAF and specifically in the airborne surveillance role. I began working for a private company providing primarily airborne surveillance for the fisheries industry, flying in aircraft owned and controlled by the Scottish Government through Marine Scotland. Ideally I would have preferred a job within renewables to establish a foothold but the shift patterns were so time generous that I knew it would enable a fast track through the MSc.

Throughout my RAF career, like many in the military, I was constantly learning new skills and completing courses, so the return to academia and study was not such a shock. The nature of the work I do allows me time but the whole work, study, life balance is a challenge and luckily this MSc allows a very generous 7 years to complete. I found the exam diets provided specific time goals and encouraged me to set myself challenging study programmes but of course it will depend on individual’s personal circumstances.
