A community foundation faces many of the same challenges as a community. In order to retain its distinct identity, it must preserve the traditions and culture that defi ne its character. Yet in order to remain vital and relevant, it must embrace change and seek new directions and new horizons in which to grow and fl ourish. The Saskatoon Community Foundation (SCF) is the conduit between donors and charities. Donors make gifts to the Foundation to support our charities’ good work, and charities honour those gifts by being good stewards of the funds received. All gifts to our endowed funds continue to benefi t the community forever.

In 2012, thanks to the gifts of many donors, we granted an unprecedented 2.28 million dollars to our community, raising our total grants since 1970 to over 12 million dollars! This is a new milestone for the Saskatoon Community Foundation, and we look forward to surpassing it in the future! The new record for grants in a single year was accompanied by a very successful year in terms of donations, with contributions of just under four million dollars. Each gift is important and appreciated, and I would like to thank all those who contributed to SCF, either by building permanent endowed funds or by directing their gifts this year to the charities of their choice.

SCF’s activities took several new directions in 2012. We launched Parties for Good, a social media driven donation portal that enables users to plan parties to raise funds for their charities of choice. Parties for Good is the inspiration of local businesswoman Paula Ghiglione. Our Youth Advisory Council found a very positive new direction by renaming its fund Youth Endowment Saskatoon and creating the YES! grants program. We also created a new event called Salute! to celebrate our Quality of Life Grants, which featured donors of unrestricted funds, grant recipients and other community stakeholders.

As our community continues to grow and change, so does SCF. In 2012, we said goodbye to longtime board members Scott Cherry, Bart Hunter and Jan Thomson, all of whom served their full term of eight years on our board in many roles including Chair. We also bid farewell to Joanne Wurmlinger, who served as Grants Committee Chair in 2010 and 2011. I’d like to thank all of our retiring Board members for their hard work and dedication to our community. We welcomed new members Tom Kishchuk and John Williams to our Board, and we look forward to their contributions in the coming years. We also welcomed our new Donor Services Manager Kristy Rempel, who joined us in the fall.

The PotashCorp Mayor’s Cultural Gala continues to perform in a stellar fashion, not only showcasing the fi nest in Saskatchewan’s culture but also raising over $370,000 at its sixth annual event.

New donors, charities and programs create further opportunities for our vibrant and growing city, and we look forward with anticipation to 2013!

At the Saskatoon Community Foundation, our staff team must be ready to adapt to changing circumstances and conditions, ready for the next opportunity, the next idea, and the next donor who wishes to transform our community. We must be fl exible, responsive and focused on the needs of our donors.

Our job is to help our donors and charities fi nd their way to each other, and to connect donors who care to the causes that matter the most to them. Each of us has taken a diff erent path to fi nd ourselves at the Saskatoon Community Foundation, coming from the private sector, entrepreneurialism, academia and, of course, the charitable sector. The diversity of our backgrounds means that we also bring a wide variety of skills and experiences into play in order to do our jobs. One thing we all share in common is a passion for making Saskatoon the best community in which to live.

Through working with donors and charities, and participating in community committees and organizations as individuals and as members of a team, we strive each day to take one or two new steps down the path toward a better future for Saskatoon’s philanthropic community. We are proud to have the opportunity to assist the people who care most about our community in fi nding the best avenues for creating permanent legacies of their generosity, passion and commitment to Saskatoon. Just as Saskatoon was once known as the Hub City, the Saskatoon Community Foundation is the hub for many connections between donors and charities, passions and programs, caring and real impact.

If you are seeking a way to make a lasting impact on the quality of life in our community, we hope you will fi nd your way to us. We can help you to ensure that your charitable legacy to our community is directed to the causes that mean the most to you.

SIGNATURE GRANT

A NEW KITCHEN FOR EGADZ’ NEW HOME

Charitable organizations must be ready to respond to change. In 2012, Egadz (Saskatoon Downtown Youth Centre Inc.) had to move from its longtime location at the corner of 1st Avenue and 24th Street. While this move certainly created challenges for Egadz, the organization was able to turn this into a positive new direction by purchasing a permanent home a few blocks north.

An important part of the services off ered by Egadz is providing healthy nutritious meals and snacks for the youth who come to the centre. Good food is not only a necessity to help youth overcome challenges in their lives and take positive steps, but it can also help in establishing trust and building relationships with youth that can lead to positive changes later on.

The Saskatoon Community Foundation awarded its 2012 Signature Grant of $50,000 to Egadz to assist in the creation of its new kitchen in the new facility. Along with a matching grant from PotashCorp, the grant has enabled Egadz to create a kitchen facility that will serve the organization now and in the future.

The Association of Saskatchewan REALTORS® (ASR) Quality of Life Legacy was created to support the ASR Board of Directors’ abiding belief in corporate social responsibility. It was, and remains, their opinion that the establishment of a charitable foundation would not only support the fi ve core principles of the Quality of Life program, but also drive future research and fund innovative regional proposals.

Joanne Kerr, Chairperson of the Quality of Life Committee, fi rst brought the idea of a charitable foundation to the directors’ table in 2011. The directors were of the opinion that the idea held great merit and after further investigation, unanimously approved the establishment of the ASR Quality of Life Legacy. The Board of Directors voted to fund the $100,000 endowment as well as a $30,000 start-up contribution in the fall 2012; the program will make its fi rst call for grant applications early in 2013.

The endowment falls under the umbrella of the Quality of Life Committee, the Mission of which is “To demonstrate and promote REALTOR® care and commitment to all communities in Saskatchewan.” The endowment will fund initiatives throughout the province by providing grants on an annual basis to deserving local agencies. These grants will be comprised of moneys collected from fundraising activities as well as from interest earned on the initial endowment. Through an application process, all members will be encouraged to apply with new project proposals and ideas that will enhance the Quality of Life in their local area.

Ultimately, the legacy was created to support the principles of Quality of Life in Saskatchewan. Charitable organizations in any area of the province may apply for a grant as long as they: support shelter-related services in our communities; enhance environmental sustainability, protection and/or conservation of our natural areas; support public education on the importance of private property rights; promote safer neighbourhoods and/or improved community services; and enhance and promote community development and better opportunities for “at risk” populations and/or disadvantaged citizens.

CHRIS MACAULAY FUND

DR. HUGH AND SHERYL MCKEE FUND

Hugh was born and raised in Saskatoon and after attending Aden Bowman Collegiate received his medical degree from the University of Saskatchewan College of Medicine (1971). He has been in active family practice since 1972. Sheryl attended Nutana Collegiate in Saskatoon and later received her degree with a major in Philosophy from the University of Saskatchewan in 2004. She is presently a board member of the Gustin/Trounce Heritage Committee Inc., an organization that plans musical and cultural events for Gustin House as well as major music recitals at larger local venues. Hugh and Sheryl recently celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary. They have one son and four grandchildren.

Hugh and Sheryl were both strongly infl uenced by the values of their parents, various friends and teachers over the years and have a desire to give back to the community from which they have received so much. They have appreciated the philanthropy of a number of friends and in particular the fi ne example set by Kay and Dora Nasser. They both feel that Saskatoon has been a

wonderful place to live, raise their son and obtain their education. They have received so much from living here and they now have the opportunity and feel an obligation to support, in a charitable way, the various organizations that benefi t Saskatoon.

Hugh and Sheryl were introduced to the Saskatoon Community Foundation by friends. Upon reviewing the philosophy, goals, and high level of accountability of the foundation, they felt it would be an excellent vehicle for the long-term support of several charitable organizations. Initial plans are for an unrestricted fund that will move towards a donor advised fund as it expands in the future.

Chris MacAulay was born Christine Ann Mills in 1957. She was a third generation Saskatonian – the daughter of businessman Denis Mills and the granddaughter of former city mayor J.S. Mills and Ethel Mills. Her mother Carolyn moved to Saskatoon from Nova Scotia after World War II. Chris was married to Gord MacAulay, a fellow native Saskatonian. An earlier marriage to Glenn Milligan ended in divorce.

All her life, Chris was happiest surrounded by family, friends and children. She was a young mother to Denis, Krystle and Rachel, and later on a step mom to Janice and Shannon, and still later a grandmother to Aiden and Ethan. For many years she worked in the family business founded by her father – MPS Photographics – a downtown retail storefront for all things relevant to photography. At various times she worked alongside her mother, her brother Blake, her uncle Brian and her cousin Ron. She was an enthusiastic self-taught photographer and one of her favourite subjects was Saskatoon. She photographed the city in all seasons throughout her life.

Chris was also a long time participant in the Saskatoon music world. As a child, she and her sister Susan sang in the choir at St. James

Church and studied piano with choirmaster Lil Thompson. Chris attended Albert School. Wayne Kyle, the school’s principal, was a Saskatoon Summer Players member who provided an opportunity for her to join a Melodica band, sing at school assemblies and take part in several Gilbert and Sullivan operettas.

As an adult, music continued to be an important part of her life. At the time she passed away, at age 54, Chris was an active member of the Saskatoon Blues Society where she was known in particular for photographing live blues performances. She played keyboards with SoundWave, a band that performed regularly at public and private gatherings in the city, often on a volunteer basis.

The Chris MacAulay Fund was established by the Mills, Milligan and MacAulay families to honour her life and the wide range of her interests. Chris lived all of her life in Saskatoon and this fund will help Saskatoon continue to be the vibrant and beautiful city she knew and loved.

JIM AND PHYLLIS SPEERS FUND

B’NAI BRITH 2012 OREST CHORNEYKO FUNDWe’re proud of you!

Phyllis Amy Speers was born and raised in Saskatoon. Her mother, Ada (Taylor) Dawson arrived in Saskatoon from England in 1905. The following year her father, Cornelius Dawson, having been raised on a farm in Manitoba, arrived in Saskatoon with electrical engineering qualifi cations from Des Moines, Iowa. Ada and Con raised 10 children of whom Phyllis was the second.

Phyllis earned a BA and Bachelor’s of Education from the University of Saskatchewan. She was employed by the Saskatoon Public School Board for over 35 years as a teacher and a reading consultant in the guidance department.

In 1960, Phyllis married Robert James Duke Speers (born 1905), whose family farm was two miles west of Battleford between the Battle and North Saskatchewan Rivers. The farm was homesteaded in 1902 by Jim’s family. Phyllis eventually donated a portion of these lands to the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation in memory of Jim

and his parents, and a stone monument was erected on the bank of the North Saskatchewan commemorating this legacy.

The Speers retired in 1970, continuing to spend summers at the farm while wintering in Saskatoon, Hawaii and Arizona. Jim introduced Phyllis to the joy of travelling and together they travelled extensively. Jim died in December of 1988 at the age of 83. Although they had no children of their own, they had numerous nieces and nephews with whom Phyllis kept in close contact. Phyllis was a woman of unwavering faith in God and trust in Jesus. She was a very interesting, caring and generous person and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Phyllis passed away in December of 2012, leaving the proceeds of a life insurance policy to create the Jim and Phyllis Speers Fund, a designated fund at the Saskatoon Community Foundation. Grants from the fund will support the Saskatoon Community Clinic.

A belief in Saskatchewan spirit and community values inspired Orest Chorneyko to become a forerunner in volunteerism in Saskatoon.

Since he moved to Saskatoon in 1995, he has been involved in dozens of organizations including being on the executive of six national events. These include a role as Chair for the 2004 Nokia Brier, VP Marketing and Public Relations for the 2000 Labatt Brier, VP Sponsorship for the 2008 Can-Am Police-Fire Games, VP Special Events for the 2007 Junos, VP Pre Tournament Games for the 2010 World Junior Hockey Championships, VP Ticketing/Sponsorship for the 1999 Canadian Seniors Curling Championship, and Board Chair of Credit Union Centre 2005/2006. Away from volunteering, Orest is director of sales for SaskTel.

For his leadership eff orts, exemplary service and caring attitude, Orest was honoured at the 58th B’nai Brith silver plate dinner with the “We’re Proud of You” award held November 7, 2012. Orest was humbled by the award. He says, “volunteering has brought rich rewards. It has allowed me to create new friendships, get a better understanding of the community, use my skills outside the

workplace and bring benefi ts to both me and the company I work for, SaskTel, through many relationships.”

Orest says he feels fortunate to have been involved in so many events in Saskatoon. Volunteerism is something that’s second nature to Orest. “It goes way back to living in Montmartre when my mom, Mary, became a role model for me. I watched my mom get involved in her community. She devoted over 60 years to diff erent organizations and events in Montmartre, never easing up until she moved into a care home in Indian Head. My dad John was also involved in many organizations. Thankfully, what they did rubbed off on me.”

The B’nai Brith 2012 Orest Chorneyko Fund, an endowment established jointly by the Saskatoon Community Foundation and the Saskatoon B’nai Brith chapter, was created to celebrate the commitment and achievements of Orest.

At the request of Orest and his wife Jane, the income from the fund will support the RUH Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in memory of their daughter, Allison, who died at seven months of age in 1983.

SCOTIAMCLEOD ASSOCIATION FUND

JACK AND BEV SHIFFMAN FUND

The Jack and Bev Shiff man Fund was created by the family in celebration of Jack and Bev’s 60th wedding anniversary. Both Jack and Bev were born in Manitoba—Bev in Winnipeg, and Jack in Selkirk. They began their married life in Toronto, where Bev was in charge of the Cobalt 60 Unit for Cancer Treatment at Toronto General Hospital, and Jack completed his degree in dental surgery. After practicing for nine years in Flin Flon, Manitoba, Jack went back to school to become an oral surgeon, and in 1969 the family moved to Saskatoon where Jack established his practice. Today they still call Saskatoon their home.

Jack and Bev have four children (Howie (Deborah), Carol (Peter), Ken (Wendy), and Harold (Lisa), 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild (so far).

They have both been active in the Saskatoon community, and in local service organizations throughout their married lives. Bev has been very active in the Order of the Eastern Star, and has given countless volunteer hours to the Shriners, Agudas Israel synagogue, and the Jewish Pavilion for FolkFest. Jack is a long-time member of the Shriners and Nutana Rotary. He is also a passionate golfer, and has been a long-time member of Riverside Golf and Country Club. He is an equally dedicated musician, and continues to play trumpet for the Saskatoon Concert Band and Zmarim, the Saskatoon Klezmer Band.

Jack and Bev have raised their family to value service to community and synagogue, education, hard work, independent thought, humour and, above all, compassion for others in need. Their strong values, generosity of spirit, and lack of pretension have shaped their lives and those of their children.

Jack and Bev’s children wanted to establish a fund that would directly benefi t the community that continues to be the centre of the Shiff man family.

ScotiaMcLeod – Saskatoon and North Saskatchewan is proud to have the opportunity to live and work in the friendly and family oriented environment of Saskatchewan.

ScotiaMcLeod believes in supporting organizations that improve the communities and strengthen the social fabric of our beautiful province. The ScotiaMcLeod Association Fund was formed in 2012 in support of charitable organizations that contribute to the well-being of children, youth and families. ScotiaMcLeod believes that the benefi ts of having its own fund within the Saskatoon Community Foundation are the fl exibility to combine the money raised within the branch for a charity of choice as well as the ability of any employee within our branch to provide a charitable donation to the Foundation. The concept of perpetuity added appeal for

ScotiaMcLeod, knowing that donating these funds today would help to support Saskatoon well into the future.

The consolidation of eff orts and funds into the ScotiaMcLeod Association Fund also allows the advisors the ability to be strategic in their annual granting and support of various causes, more so than they were able to do before. ScotiaMcLeod would like to thank its advisors for their collective contributions of their time and resources to this fund.

Lena (Kendell) and Bill Schutz were both born and raised on east-central Saskatchewan farms, children of German-speaking immigrant families from war-ravaged eastern Europe who had immigrated to Western Canada in the late 1800s.Bill was a country schoolteacher in the local area after attending Normal School in Saskatoon, receiving his teacher’s certifi cate in 1935. Following their marriage in 1943, they moved to a farm they had purchased in the rural district of Rothbury, north of Churchbridge. When Bill retired from teaching in 1949 and in the same year was elected as the area delegate to Saskatchewan Wheat Pool, farming became their main livelihood for more than 40 years.

Lena, like many farm wives at the time, was busy with her home while raising two sons, and accomplishing more than her share of the work in the fi elds. In addition to being actively involved in the community and serving on the executive of the local church women’s group, her interests included a love of music from a young age.

As their farm operations grew, Bill continued with Saskatchewan Wheat Pool until his retirement in 1980, serving the fi nal eight years on the Board of Directors. His public service also included chairman of the local school board, director of the Churchbridge Co-operative Association, and in several capacities on their local church councils.

Elder son Dennis and his family took over the expanding farm business, which allowed Lena and Bill some time for travel and relaxation in their retirement years. They enjoyed living in their condominium in Yorkton; however, failing health for both of them required a relocation in 2008 to the Langenburg Centennial Special Care Home, where they resided until their deaths – Lena in 2011 and Bill in 2012.

To know and be grateful that they were blessed to live long and active lives was extremely important to them. As a special request to her surviving family, Lena asked that a donation be made to an organization that carries out programs of benefi t to seniors (or anyone else for that matter) who may be having problems with loss of vision. Since this was such a debilitating issue for them both throughout their later years, she wanted to ensure that some assistance would be made available to others in Saskatchewan coping with similar disabilities.

The Schutz family decided to invest the “seed money” with the Saskatoon Community Foundation in 2012, to establish the Caroline and William Schutz endowment fund. The initial contribution is expected to grow and perpetually support those in need, as a continuing testament of their commitment to others.

MEEWASIN VALLEY AUTHORITY FUND – SUSAN LAMB

As a tribute to Susan Lamb on the occasion of her retirement from the position of CEO at Meewasin, the Meewasin Board established the “Susan Lamb Endowment Fund” in 2012. The fund will be managed by the Saskatoon Community Foundation for the benefi t of Meewasin. Meewasin’s education programs have always been particularly important to Susan; to honour that importance, the Board decided that the annual earnings from the new $10,000 fund will be dedicated to support education and conservation work in the northeast swale in perpetuity. Contributions to the new fund will be accepted from all interested persons.

During her tenure, Meewasin was named one of the top four river basin agencies in the world in 2004 and again in 2006 by the Riverfoundation in Brisbane, Australia in a prize competition that has been compared to the Nobel Prize for rivers. Ingrained in the community, Susan was named YWCA Woman of Distinction in 1995 for her business and community work and received a Saskatchewan Centennial Medal in 2006.

Susan has always kept the long-view of Meewasin in mind, and the “Susan Lamb Endowment Fund” is a fi tting tribute to her service and part of her legacy at Meewasin. It will continue for as long as the river runs.

In 2012, its sixth year, the PotashCorp Mayor’s Cultural Gala continued to dazzle our community with the best in cultural entertainment and local talent. The 6th Annual PotashCorp Mayor’s Cultural Gala was presented at TCU Place on September 22, 2012, to an enthusiastic crowd of over 600 supporters. The event was a resounding success once again, raising over $370,000 thanks to the support of sponsors, attendees, auction donors, entertainers, and a huge amount of work done behind the scenes by the volunteer committee.

The entertainment was exceptional this year, featuring local stars such as Sean Brandt, Carrie Catherine and Chinese Dragon Dancers, as well as three-time Juno Award winner and Order of Canada recipient Susan Aglukark performing special versions of her songs with local dancers. As always, a stellar meal, a wide range of live and silent auction items, and dance music from Sneaky Pete made the sixth Gala an event not to be missed!

Amid all the glamour and high spirits, there was another huge announcement made. Wayne Brownlee, Vice-President of PotashCorp, announced that PotashCorp will be continuing its title sponsorship of the Gala with a further $300,000 for 2013, 2014 and 2015. The $300,000 covers not only the cost of the sponsorship, but also ensures that the PotashCorp Partnership grants program will continue at SCF for another three years. On behalf of the many charities that will benefi t from these grants, we would like to thank PotashCorp for its generous support of our community, and of the Saskatoon Community Foundation, your centre for community philanthropy!

To all those who attended, to those who bought or donated an auction item, and to all of our sponsors including our title sponsor PotashCorp, on behalf of the Saskatoon Community Foundation and our great community of Saskatoon, we would like to off er our heartfelt thanks. Your support shows that Saskatoon does indeed shine, through our generosity and sense of community!

The 2013 PotashCorp Mayor’s Cultural Gala will be held at TCU Place on September 21st, 2013.

Laurie O’Connor is the Executive Director at the Saskatoon Food Bank and Learning Centre. During her teen years, Laurie’s volunteer work with a small town food bank in Ontario strongly shaped her values and beliefs, inspiring her to devote her career to making a diff erence in people’s lives. Well known for her commitment and passion to poverty reduction, Laurie believes the creation of healthier communities is a shared responsibility. Past co-chair of the Anti-Poverty Coalition, she is also involved with the Leadership Group for the Poverty Reduction Strategy Partnership and serves on the board of Food Banks of Saskatchewan.

Laurie believes that community development must be driven by the hopes and dreams of those whose voices are most often silenced. She is humbled and inspired by the hidden leaders she meets every day, and hopes to bring their voices to conversations that matter.

The Saskatoon Community Foundation is proud to support Laurie in her participation in Leadership Saskatoon, and looks forward to her contributions to leadership and community development in Saskatoon in the years to come!

The Saskatoon Community Foundation’s Strategic Alliance Award honours a local business for a longstanding mutually benefi cial partnership with a local charity. The award was created to increase awareness of strategic partnerships in our community, and to recognize the commitment of both businesses and charities to improving our community. The business partner wins the award, while the charity partner receives a $5,000 unrestricted grant from the Saskatoon Community Foundation.

In 2012, On Purpose Leadership Inc (OPLI) was the recipient of the Strategic Alliance Award for its ongoing partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Saskatoon and Area. According to OPLI CEO and recipient Nowshad Ali, “When you consider that mentored youth graduate from high school at a rate 20% higher than the national average, that little brothers and little sisters in comparison to the rest of the population skipped half as many school days, were 46% less likely to initiate drug use and are 34% less likely to allow themselves to be victimized or bullied, you see why it is so easy for us to get involved with this organization. Our collaboration has involved special events, fundraising, planning, organization development and more. The Big Brothers and Big Sisters staff are true professionals and their volunteers nothing short of stellar. We at On Purpose Leadership have been very privileged. The award is icing on the cake, and the grant to Big Brothers and Big Sisters will go a very long way to improving the life for Saskatoon youth.”

Congratulations to both On Purpose Leadership Inc. and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Saskatoon and Area!

QUALITY OF LIFE GRANTS

OVER TWO MILLION DOLLARS IN GRANTS!

Since 2000, we have granted over 10 million dollars, over 80% of out total grants since 1970.

Over 2.28 million dollars were granted in 2012 to local charities. After we fi rst granted over one million dollars in a single year in 2010, we have now reached an even greater milestone! This demonstrates the power of the community foundation model. We started slowly in 1970. We made our fi rst grant in 1973, donating $600 to the Council for Crippled Children and Adults (now known as the Saskatchewan Abilities Council.) Each year, we receive more gifts from donors, always protecting the original contribution forever, so the amount we can grant also continues to grow.

AIDS PWAS TEAM — A NEW SELF-IMAGE FOR TRUSTED VOLUNTEERS

The PWAS (People Who Access Services) Leadership Team builds self-esteem and community buy-in through teaching basic work skills. PWAS are mentored in leadership and employability skills, so they can share their knowledge and experiences with others. The PWAS Advisory Committee ensures that programming is responsive and relevant by expanding the role of people who access services in planning and delivering programming in the 601 Outreach Centre. Volunteers who choose to participate in the PWAS Leadership Team will train with Outreach Centre staff . They will act as a fi rst contact in the 601 Outreach Centre, responsible for taking basic statistics and primary maintenance. This includes daily tasks like preparing coff ee and breakfast foods, cleaning and organizing the space, greeting newcomers and answering their questions about services, helping individuals use the computers and free laundry, reminding visitors of the 601’s community rules, and keeping track of demographics. People sign up for shifts two weeks in advance; more experienced workers have been called on to help staff orient new team members. AIDS Saskatoon helps people see that safer, healthier choices around drug use, sex and other everyday activities really are within reach. When people believe that change is possible, incrementally, people begin to make safer choices for themselves, their families and their world.

CNIB TECH LAB — NEW TECHNOLOGY OPENS NEW HORIZONS

Technology changes so rapidly, and all of us must continue learning to keep up with the changes it brings. People with vision loss can benefi t greatly from new assistive technologies, improving their ability to access information, gain or maintain independence, seek new opportunities and live well. The Saskatoon Community Foundation granted funds to CNIB to purchase computer screen readers, screen magnifi ers, braille displays, and voice input software that operate in conjunction with graphical desktop browsers and other programs, as well as video magnifi ers (CCTVs) that magnify printed material and may reverse text and background colours for greater ease of reading. The Technology Lab has the potential to benefi t over 5,000 people, helping each client to be able to do the same daily activities as sighted people, and increasing CNIB’s ability to help people develop new life skills as they learn to cope with their condition.

BEAVER CREEK INTERPRETIVE SKI PROGRAM (MVA) — MOVING WITH NATURE

The Beaver Creek Conservation Area is accessible year-round to schools, special interest groups and the general public. The area is a naturalized site with nature trails that are challenging to navigate during the winter months. With a grant from the Saskatoon Community Foundation, the Meewasin Valley Authority purchased 50 sets of skis, boots and poles, housing them in the ski chalet that has been recently installed at the Beaver Creek Conservation Area. This building site is adjacent to the Beaver Creek Interpretive Centre, and has access to power/ heat and a deck in the front area. Future plans include installation of solar power. This new ski program gives interpreters at Beaver Creek a new opportunity for programming in the winter season. Interpreters lead students, teachers and others to interact with nature on cross country skis. People can get closer to fl ora and fauna without disturbing their natural habitat.

USE PARTIES FOR GOOD TO RAISE FUNDS FOR YOUR CHARITY!

Early in 2012, the Saskatoon Community Foundation launched “Parties for Good,” a new website and online donation portal that helps people use the occasions in their lives to do some good in our community.

Founded by Paula Ghiglione, Parties For Good works on the principle that many of us already have what we need in our lives, and could be just as happy to give to charities as to receive gifts. When we celebrate a birthday, anniversary or other special occasion with friends and family, it is customary that our guests bring some sort of a gift. This can range from inexpensive (and easily broken) children’s toys to host gifts, like fl owers or bottles of wine for grown-up gatherings. Either way, in many cases, we really don’t need these items, and might feel just as well if the thoughtfulness of our guests could be focused to meet vital needs in the community.

Parties for Good is an online, social media friendly portal to organize parties. Individuals are able to log in, create their custom party page, invite guests to donate and then track their party attendees. Donations of $20 and over are eligible for instant email charitable receipts. Event donations are collected and fl owed through to registered charities in Saskatoon. All charities have donors and supporters, and any one of them could use Parties for Good to raise funds for their cause!

The Saskatoon Community Foundation does not expect to benefi t from Parties for Good (unless our supporters hold parties on our behalf ). The fees associated with Parties for Good simply cover our costs in providing the service. SCF believes that we should all work together to grow the community’s awareness of the work of charitable organizations. For more information on Parties for Good, contact Donor Services Manager Kristy Rempel at (306) 665-1756 or [email protected]

The Saskatoon Community Foundation is proud to support a great idea that can assist charities in developing new networks of support and sustainability that will make our community a better place!

Trevor Forrest, Executive Director of SCF, with SaskEnergy representative Leslie Gosselin.

Saskatoon Community Foundation was proud to partner with Synergy 8 Community Builders on its 2012 fundraising eff orts to upgrade facilities at Saskatoon Crisis Nursery. The exterior and playground area of the facility, as well as the laundry facilities, have been renovated bringing the Nursery up to modern standards and replacing equipment that has served well, but needed updating.

Synergy 8 Community Builders is committed to collaborating with local community groups and organizations to provide leadership in community engagement and innovative strategies for community development. Its previous projects include support for a new health bus for the City of Saskatoon, an ultrasound unit for Pediatrics and Fetal Assessment, and a Pediatric Ambulance.

In October 2012, Synergy 8 hosted Fred Couples at Prairieland Park in support of Saskatoon Crisis Nursery. This event along with other fundraising eff orts, both cash and in-kind, raised over $400,000, all to help kids and families in crisis!

The Saskatoon Community Foundation’s core unrestricted granting program is Quality of Life grants. This program grants more funds to Saskatoon charities than any other granting program at SCF. Our unrestricted funds come from gifts from literally thousands of donors over the years, all of whom made the decision to allow SCF discretion to grant the funds where they can make the greatest impact on our city’s quality of life.

Each year, our Grants Committee, made up of members of our Board of Directors and other knowledgeable and engaged people from our community, reviews as many as 100 LOIs (Letters of Intent to Apply) in our six focus areas: Arts and Culture, Education, Health, Social Development, Environment and Capacity Building. From this large set of LOIs, the Grants Committee selects projects it would like to consider funding and requests full applications. The applications are then reviewed and granting decisions are made and approved by our Board of Directors.

In 2012, SCF created a new event, Salute!, to pay tribute to both the charities and their staff and volunteers who work so diligently to make our community a better place and the many donors and supporters who give so that SCF will have funds to grant to accomplish these great works in our community. We invited a donor to our unrestricted funds, former Board Chair Scott Cherry, to speak about the importance of giving to unrestricted funds. We also invited three speakers from this year’s grant recipients to speak about the impact of the grants on their agencies and the people they serve. These included Nicole White from AIDS Saskatoon, Mark Von Eschen from Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan and Kevin Rosales from CLASSIC (Community Legal Assistance Services Saskatoon Inner City).

Thanks to the very generous sponsorship of SaskEnergy, Salute 2012! was held on May 10, 2012 at Prairieland Park.

YOUTH ADVISORY COUNCILOur Youth Advisory Council members, who are sometimes known as YACs, are the dedicated young men and women between the ages of 14 and 19 who help to determine which youth programs will be supported by the Saskatoon Community Foundation each year. YACs attend regular meetings to learn about community charities and decide on the types of projects that will be supported each year, based on the most important needs for youth in our community. They work together to plan fundraising and awareness events, and fi nally, they decide which community charities will receive grants! It’s a big responsibility, but it’s also a lot of fun!

Youth Endowment Saskatoon (YES!)In 2012, our Youth Advisory Council decided that the original name given to our youth fund, The Batting 1000 Endowment for Children and Youth, no longer resonated with them. Over a number of meetings, the group collaboratively decided that the fund should be renamed Youth Endowment Saskatoon. While of course the name is very straightforward, it also creates the anagram YES! The Youth Advisory Council wanted its fund and grants to have this very positive connotation, implying not only that youth are positive about making our community a better place, but also that requests for funding will be reviewed with this positive attitude. After all, the favourite activity of anyone who reviews grant applications is to say “YES!” Beginning in 2013, the Youth Advisory Council will no longer make “Batting 1000” grants, but instead, will from now on make YES! grants.

YEAR IN REVIEW2012 was a record year for the Saskatoon Community Foundation with over $2,280,000 in grants. In the last 10 years, the total grants awarded are over $9,200,000, bringing the total grants since inception to $12,498,000.

Almost $4,000,000 was donated to SCF in 2012. Since 2001, the total assets of SCF have grown over 620% to a total of $47,090,928.

Net operating expenditures, after grants for administration and fee for service contracts off ered by the Foundation, totaled $437,722. This represents over a 7% decrease compared to 2011, and allowed the Foundation to maintain its administration fees at a near historic low of 1.5%. The operation of the Foundation involves not only building endowments, but comprehensive activities related to strategic grant making and community leadership. These activities are not necessarily related to the donations received in any one year, and endowment building methodology used by the Foundation creates normal gift delays, which may result in costs preceding the receipt of the gifts by several years. In the view of management, the ratio of operating expenses to total endowment should be used to evaluate the operational costs. Ratios may fall within a range depending on the size and stage of development of a community foundation. Management considers the ration of 1.5% to be within an acceptable range compared with benchmarks established in the community foundation movement, and continues to monitor both the actual results and the benchmarks on an ongoing basis. Community leadership represents the work of the Foundation to provide technical assistance to other philanthropic organizations and projects, as well as fostering the growth of community leadership.

STEWARDING YOUR INVESTMENTOur responsibility as the manager of many diff erent donor funds is something we take very seriously. We recognize that each donation, no matter the size, refl ects trust in our ability to invest wisely and use the investment earnings in accordance with our donors’ wishes.

Responsibility of managing our investment portfolio rests with the Board of Directors with the guidance and oversight of the Investment Committee. The Committee works closely with the professionals of Greystone Managed Investments to set policy, establish performance benchmarks and monitor the performance of our portfolio.

Our investment philosophy refl ects the following objectives:

• Protect the capital of the fund

• Maintain a reserve for future declines in the market

• Achieve the granting objectives of the Foundation

• Recover the costs of managing and administering funds and providing donors with a wide array of philanthropic services

• Use an investment style that focuses on the long term

The SCF strives to maintain its diligent investment policy and has consistently exceeded market average. Our investments provided a 6.48% return for 2012, and brings our 10-year average to 7.3% per year. We are proud of the fact that among the approximately 185 community foundations in Canada, your local foundation has provided nearly the highest return over the past decade.

In fulfi lling our fi duciary responsibilities, our goal is to obtain competitive total returns over the long term. This is accomplished through a strategic allocation of fi xed assets among equities and fi xed income securities.

Types of FundsUNRESTRICTED FUNDS provide the Foundation with the most fl exibility in responding to grant applications. This type of fund is not tied to any specifi c agency or fi eld of interest, which allows the Foundation to address pressing, changing needs of the community.

FIELD OF INTEREST FUNDS are established by donors who wish to support a specifi c charitable fi eld of interest, such as arts, education, health, family and community, or the environment. Based on the donor’s fi eld of interest, the Foundation selects appropriate projects to support.

DONOR DESIGNATED FUNDS are established by donors to support one or more specifi c charitable organizations in perpetuity.

DONOR ADVISED FUNDS enable donors to be actively involved each year in recommending recipient charities.

STUDENT AWARDS are established in the name of a donor, or in honour of someone else, to help individuals receive education or training they might not otherwise be able to access.

ADMINISTRATIVE ENDOWMENT Saskatoon Community Foundation is a charity itself with ongoing expenses. Contributors to the Administrative Endowment recognize the importance of building the Foundation’s capacity to lead and serve the community.

AGENCY ENDOWMENTS are funds established by charities to generate annual income for their use.

MANAGED FUNDS are also established by charities, but are not endowed. The funds can be withdrawn at any time, but benefi t from being part of the larger pool of investments.

Please contact the Foundation’s Donor Services Manager at (306) 665-1756 or visit www.saskatooncommunityfoundation for more details on how to set up a fund.

Community BuildersCommunity Builders are donors who make deferred gifts—a life insurance policy, a charitable trust, or a bequest by will. Although the gift is deferred, tax benefi ts can be immediate.

Flow Through FundsFlow through funds are not endowed. Donors may fl ow funds through the Foundation to the cause of their choice following Canada Revenue Agency regulations. We award fl ow through grants on behalf of individuals, families, or businesses.

The Saskatoon FundThe Saskatoon Fund, home to our memorial, tribute and Century Club donations, is one of the many funds that make up our Unrestricted Fund. Memorial and tribute gifts allow friends and family to donate in memory or in honour of a loved one. Century Club is the club for “everyday philanthropists.” Launched by Ross Pinder in 1982 to recognize Saskatoon’s 100th

birthday, Century Club members commit to donate at least $100 a year.

WHAT’S YOUR DIRECTION?We can help you achieve your charitable goalsWhen you decide to establish an endowment fund with the Saskatoon Community Foundation, you are making a lasting commitment to the community. You can make gifts of cash, a designation in your will, a life insurance policy, real estate, or a gift of appreciated publicly traded securities. These gifts to the Foundation are invested in perpetuity with the income granted to charitable organizations. This means your original gift will make an impact in the community today, tomorrow, and forever.

POTASHCORP CHILDREN’S FESTIVAL OF SASKATCHEWAN — A NEW GENERATION DREAMS BIG

Curiosity, collaboration and compassion are qualities to be fostered in every child. With a grant from the Saskatoon Community Foundation, The PotashCorp Children’s Festival of Saskatchewan invited Artist in Residence Monique Martin to bring visual arts experience to life under the theme “DREAM BIG.” Using the symbol of a nest to illustrate that theme, big and small nests were created on site out of recycled materials. A painter and printmaker, Ms. Martin used a restored antique press to teach kids about the woodcut or lino print process, and children then made their own prints using the press. The Rouge Gallery, an off -site community partner, hosted a show of Ms. Martin’s large-scale nest paintings, and invited children to visit and add their own festival-created prints to an interactive installation. It was a dynamic and constantly evolving project broad enough to include everyone who visited the festival. The PotashCorp Children’s Festival of Saskatchewan celebrates its 25th birthday in 2013!
