India Smart City Micro Accelerator Program - UC Berkeley

Brief Report About the Program

Day 1 (25.02.2019)

The workshop started with Inauguration, welcome speech and introduction. They did

program orientation and motivating students towards benefits and enrolment of program.

They gave us information about UC Berkeley and discussed about innovations Students were

divided in a team of 3-6 team members based on their interest areas and industry they

selected to work on. Based on our interest they asked us to choose one out of eight fields. All

similar minded people did groups of 5 members each. Five member groups are framed

according to their wish. After analysing and reading case studies student identified list of

challenges in respective industry. A series of activities were conducted to finally pick a single

challenge. Pain storming session helped them to understand user perspective and finally they

declared a defined problem statement.

. The next task was to introduce ourselves among the group and be familiar with each

other. They asked us to list maximum number of problems in our chosen field. Next session

was introduction about IDEATE. Next students choosed the buddy teams of different field

and discussed about our problems and tried to increase the number of problems. Among

different problem selected top 10 problems. Then again students analyzed and selected the

top most problem. One example of the problem statement is “How can we help computer

science engineering students to solve the problem of unawareness about current market

trends?”

Day 2 (26.02.2019)

Session started with recap IDEATE. They gave introduction about Business

Model Innovation (BMI). We started listing out the solutions to our problem. Since students

didn’t find enough solutions, they came up with an idea to change the problem statement

itself. Students started the day by listing down the solutions they believe will help to solve

the problem identified. Then a brainstorming a sorting session was conducted which helped

them to pick up a single solution. Business model canvas session was conducted to make

them understand how to start building their business model. Students also conducted 5

customer interviews. The new problem statement was “How can we help the labour class

children to afford education?”

Page 10: New Doc 2019-03-01 09.26...20. 1RR16CS182 Dhiraj S Suthar 21. 1RR15CS088 Rajeev KL 22. 1RR15CS111 Thejas E 23. 1RR16CS141 Sheldon Lobo 24. 1RR16CS166 Thejaswini D 25. 1RR16CS169 UtpalPati

Students started listing maximum number of solutions to our new problem

statement. At least students came up with one solution. The solution is to create a website

wherein students can update the information of labour class people who are not being able to

afford education, so that the donors, universities or any companies can fund them to get

education. Next we were asked to interview few customers. Then a session conducted about

case study, product market fit and market validation.

Day 3 (27.02.2019)

The day started with mentoring market validation. Then we were asked to fill

Business Model Canvas (BMC). The BMC contains the whole description about the project.

Business Model Canvas session continued and student designed BMC for their proposed

solution. A session was conducted to make them understand importance of customer

development and how to conduct customer interview. Students were given a task of

conducting 20 customer interviews. A mock session was conducted where each team

presented their BMC and shared experience of customer interviews. Next there was a demo

of market validation. The next task was customer interview session-2. Students did interview

for 15 customers. Students participants were made to present our customers problems in front

of our mentors. We have included some suggestions from mentors and buddies.

Day 4 (28.02.2019)

Students understood the importance of updating BMC based on customer

interviews. Real world example was demonstrated to students to make them understand

outcome of their journey. Students interviewed 25+ customers to validate their ideas. Pitching

session preparation started and student worked on BMC and customer interview template.

Students were asked to create questionnaires about our customer interview. The next task was

to interview for minimum 25 customers out of campus. Students were divided ourself into

two groups and went to two schools as well as two different areas to interview. Students have

updated the BMC based on the customer interview. The updation was in the value

proposition i.e, encouraging the girl power and improves the government schools. The day

ended with preparation of final presentation and demo.

Day 5 (01.03.2019)

There was a pitching session from all the teams about their projects. Based on

team performance the judges selected top four teams out of fifteen teams. Students are happy

to mention that the program was highly good and useful. The day ended with award

distribution Valedictory and photo session.
