This spring’s issue is packed full of interesting features, includinga special feature on New and Emerging Drugs (NEDs).

New Emerging Drugs(NEDs) are substanceswhich produce the sameeffects as other drugs butare not controlled underthe Misuse of Drugs Act.

The term NEDs covers a variety of herbaland plant products, synthetic chemicalcompounds and even gases such asNitrous Oxide (laughing gas). They aretaken to get high and may produce thesame or similar effects to illegal drugsbut may not be controlled under theMisuse of Drugs Act, 1971. If not bannedsubstances, they are however,considered illegal under currentmedicines legislation (The Medical Act,

Legal highs, is a term coined bythe media and used to describeNew Emerging Drugs, which arealso known as New PsychoactiveSubstances (NPS).

People should beunder no illusion, thesesubstances marketed asso-called ‘legal highs’ cancause serious damage toyour health and in somecases, even death.Professor Les Iversen, Chairman of theAdvisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs.

This lethal psychedelic drugshould be controlled as a Class Asubstance, according to theAdvisory Council on the Misuse ofDrugs (ACMD).

AMT acts in a similar way to LSD. It isfound along with other deadlysubstances in a group of chemicalsknown as Tryptamines, which alsoincludes 5-MeO-DALT, known as“Rockstar” or “GreenBeans.”

The ACMD proposesexpanding the currentdescription of theTryptamine family ofcompounds under theAct to ensure thatnewly created drugsare also banned.

About Tryptamines

Designed to mimic the effects ofLSD which is a class A drug.

They make users feel upbeat, fullof energy and friendly to thosearound them.

Effects may last from 3-14 hours,depending on dosage.

They cause hallucinations whichcan be a frightening experience.Users may feel anxious andpanicky.

AMT is very active in small doseswhich mean it’s easy to take toomuch and overdose.

Since Wednesday 7th of January,2015, Tryptamines became ClassA dugs, controlled by the DrugsAct, 1971.

New from WEDINOS!

Update by WEDINOS...WEDINOS, is a harm reductionproject in Wales funded by PublicHealth Wales. It offers drugtesting and advice, publishingquarterly trends in substanceuse.

WEDINOS has reported amongstother things the trend of polydruguse. This occurs when two ormore drugs are used at the sametime, often with the intention ofenhancing or countering thenegative effects of another drug.

WEDINOS has reported that 77%of all branded psychoactiveproducts analysed in the last fewmonths were found to contain atleast two substances. Anexample of this is the whitepowder known as “Dizzle Dust”,which was found to contain sixdifferent substances.

Dizzle Dust contains potentstimulants along with Caffeineand Lidocaine as bulking agents.

It is unknown how thesesubstances will react in the bodyin the short, medium and longterm.

Poly SubstanceAbuseMixing depressants such as Alcohol and Tranquillisers, whichslow down the body, can cause unconsciousness and death bysuppressing the functioning of the heart and lungs.

ABCIn Class Act, pupils at KS4, increase theirknowledge of the consequences and lawsgoverning substance misuse. This lesson alsoincludes important information about New andEmerging Drugs (NEDs) or New PsychoactiveSubstances (NPS).

NEW EMERGING DRUGS(NEDs) ASSEMBLY

Mixing Alcohol and the stimulant Cocaine, sometimes referred to as ‘drinkingwith Charlie’, results in the creation of a third drug within the body calledCocaethylene. Cocaethylene affects the brain for longer and is more toxicthan either drug alone. It takes twice as long to be processed by the bodythan Alcohol and raises the risks associated with both drugs. Little is knownon how Alcohol reacts in the body with the presence of the many unknownstimulants currently available. Choosing to use multiple substances isextremely dangerous. This includes prescription drugs.

Drugs in the spotlightKetamine is an anaesthetic drugwhich has been used for operationson humans and animals.

It is a very powerful and complex drug,an anaesthetic with analgesic, stimulantand psychedelic properties. Ketamine isa dissociative anaesthetic. Users feeldetached and remote from theirimmediate environment. They say thatunder its influence, they assume adifferent point of view, outside of bodyand self.

It is usually a grainy white powder whichcan be snorted but may also beobtained in tablet form or can be injectedas a liquid. Ketamine is a prescriptiononly drug. It has emerged as amainstream club drug since the early1990s.

Kicks in after 15-30minutes (immediate if injected) and last for up to 3hours

Kills pain and alters perception Makes users feel detached from

Creates ‘out of body’ andhallucinatory experiences followedby numbness and strange musclemovements

The Risks! Blurred vision and difficulty in moving and speaking

creating significant vulnerability in the user Risk of injury as users don’t feel any pain Large doses can lead to breathingdifficulties an even heart failure

Causes panic attacks and depression and in largerdoses it can exaggerate pre-existing mental health problems

Tablets are sometimes passed off as Ecstasy – real risks not clear touser

Bladder problems can develop which irreversibly damage thelining of the bladder resulting in bladder removal even amongstyoung people

Death – very often as a result of loss of coordination or control e.g.jumping from heights, road traffic accidents and drowning

This drug is even more dangerous when mixed with other drugs oralcohol.

Throughout the 2014 summer holidays, year 8 pupilswere selected from schools across Wales, toparticipate in a week long, challenging inclusive,educational programme. The project was led byexperienced School Community Police Officers inpartnership with the Youth Offending Teams (YOT)Youth Service and Fire Service.

In our brand new sexting lesson, pupilsare introduced to the characters Erinand Owen in a film called Risky Pics.Erin is coerced by her boyfriend Owen tosend a naked photo of herself. Havingtaken the picture she is faced with thedilemma of whether or not to send it toOwen. The film then follows the outcomesof two different decisions, one in whichErin deletes the image and the otherwhere she sends it.
