Over the past two years, The Middlesex Corporation of Littleton, Mass., has been awarded $350 million in contracts for three major jobs in Massachusetts and Connecticut alone. The Route 9 Kenneth F. Burns bridge over Lake Quinsigamond spanning Shrewsbury, Mass., to Worcester, Mass.; the New Britain Bus Way covering 5.8 mi. (9.3 km) from Newington, Conn., to Hartford, Conn.; and most recently the I-95 bridge from New Haven, Conn., to West Haven, Conn., carrying traffic over the West River. On the site of the I-95 bridge project in West Haven, Middlesex currently has a fleet of approximately 20 pieces of equipment at work, made up of primarily Caterpillar, Komatsu and John Deere machines. The lift- ing equipment fleet at this site consists of Link-Belt cranes, including two Link-Belt 298HSL 250-ton (227 t) lattice crawler cranes and a Link- Belt RTC8080 Series II rough-terrain crane. In fact, most of Middlesex’s crane fleet consists of Link-Belt, which are serviced and maintained by Woods CRW, North Oxford, Mass. Link-Belt machines, but even more importantly, thepeople, service and support we receive from WoodsCRW. “When I call Joe Bacarri, the service manager at

Woods CRW, I usually don’t even need to have theparts book and manual in front of me because heknows the Link-Belt machines inside and out. Theyalways have standard items in stock. If I need non-inventory parts, which is unusual, we receive themvery promptly. As an example, we recently identifiedthe need for some special crane cable and I was notable to notify Woods CRW until Saturday afternoon.By 9:30 a.m. on Monday the cable was in andWoods people were on our site assisting with instal-lation.Not long ago, Middlesex ran into a problem while

working on a project on Martha’s Vineyard withanother one of its Link-Belt 298HSL cranes. Despitethe fact that this crane had not been purchased from WoodsCRW, the company took parts and pieces off of a Link-Belt298HSL that was in its inventory and brought them toMartha’s Vineyard to keep Middlesex operating, accordingto Shattuck.“On this particular job we are really appreciating our new

Link-Belt 298HSL crawler crane,” said Shattuck. “The oper-ators are very comfortable with the cab; the machine hasbeen a workhorse that gives us little or no downtime; andextremely important in this type of job, the visibility from thecab is very good. Right now the crane is making piling picks

that weigh about 80,000 pounds, effortlessly. The pilings arebeing driven in a timely manner.”

Building BridgesThe $130 million I-95 bridge project began on Feb. 18,

2014, and is scheduled for completion in November 2018.The bridge itself is 1,200 ft. (366 m) long and 98 ft. (30 m)wide, plus the construction of entrances and exit ramps to thebridge. The project includes the creation of extensive drainage

systems 100 ft. (30.5 m) below the project. A bypass systemhad to be created for a sewage system, which was handling30 million gallons of sewage a day. Old ramps and infra-structure from the old bridge system also have to beremoved; 73,000 sq. ft. (6,782 sq m) of trestle is being han-dled, each 24-in. (61 cm) in diameter and 100-ft. (30.5 m)long; 1,000 prestressed concrete piles in excess of 90-ft. (27m) in length and 16-in. square (103 sq cm) are being driven,each pick with the weight of the hammer and lead is inexcess of 125,000 lbs. (56,700 kg). Four steel sheeting cofferdams are being created; 13,079

cu. yds. (10,000 cu m) of material is being clamshell exca-vated, all of which must be removed from the site and betested for contamination before it can be brought back to thesite for re-use. All water that is being pumped out from thesite must be pumped into a settlement tank and then hauled

Link-Belt RTC8080 Serves as SupportCrane on Site for 1-95 Bridge Projectto East Haven, where it istreated and then pumped intothe New Haven sewagetreatment plant. It is antici-pated that 6.4 million gallonsof water will be treated inthis manner. The new bridge also must

be constructed in a way thatno lane is ever lost in eitherdirection. Constructionworkers are on site 24-hoursa day.Tom Wood, the project

manager said, “It is in stress-ful environments like thisthat the Link-Belt cranesshine. They are moredependable and require less maintenance than other cranes.The cranes offer a tremendous ease of movement. Theircharts are good and our operators like them. Before makingthe purchase, we met with Woods CRW and discussed ourspecs and their support. It is important to us to be reassuredthat the manufacturer of a crane is on board in supporting usand comfortable with the demands that we are specking the

crane for.”Also on the site is a

recently purchased Link-Belt RTC8080 Series IIrough-terrain crane. This 80-ton (72.5 t) crane serves as asupport crane and servicesthe ironworkers on site. Itsmaneuverability on wheelsallows it to be easily movedfrom one end of the bridge tothe other. To move it toanother job site is easy aswell in just two loads; justdrop the counterweight slabson the deck and then load outon trailer. The crane has 127-ft. (39

m) of full power boom and ispilot operated with hydraulic

controls. It has 18,500 lb. (8,391 kg) max winch line pull,and a 230-ft. (70 m) maximum tip height, with optional jiband extensions.The 250-ton (227 t) Link-Belt 298HSL features the HSL

F&W Celebrates 75 Years of Serving Connecticut IndustryF&W Equipment Corp., a family-owned business,

has served the Connecticut construction market since1939. For three generations, F&W has been commit-ted to delivering the best in equipment sales, rentals,parts and service. This year, the company is celebrat-ing its 75th anniversary.Founder Harold O. Funk originally opened the

business as F&W Welding Service in WoosterSquare, New Haven. He saw demand increase dur-ing World War II, when iron and steel were neededfor multiple military and stateside projects. Duringthe war, Funk worked hard, collaborating with icon-ic Electric Boat to create innovative, life-saving sub-marine technology. After the war, F&W changedgears and began to provide equipment and equip-ment service for the surge in post-war construction inaddition to the repair work the company was alreadyknown for.In 1955, F&W Equipment Corp. moved from its

historic New Haven location to a new home inOrange, Conn. The firm moved again in July of1965, to its current site at 164 Boston Post Road.Funk’s son, Roger, joined the business in 1963

with a degree in metallurgical engineering. In addi-tion to giving oversight to the metal fabrication endof the business, he was eager to create and imple-ment the changes necessary for F & W to grow as a con-struction equipment dealership. For more than 50 years, Roger has been active in industry

associations such as Associated Equipment Distributors(AED), Northeast Equipment Dealers Association (NEDA),National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), andConnecticut Business and Industry Association (CBIA).During his tenure, Roger also has earned many awards forhis performance from Case, Kubota, Samsung and Indeco.He has been recognized locally for his leadership and volun-teer work in the community, including numerous distinctionsfrom the Orange Chamber of Commerce, West HavenRotary and the Orange Economic DevelopmentCorporation.“We’re proud of our history and proud of the part we’ve

played in helping to build Connecticut,” said Roger Funk,who has been at the helm for more than 50 years.

Changing the Local IndustryF&W founder Harold Funk was an inno-

vator. In the mid-1950s, he recognized theneed construction contractors and farmershad for more effective equipment.Combining his welding experience, creativi-ty and vision, Funk began to install loadersand backhoe attachments onto Porsche trac-tors in an era prior to the widespread avail-ability of the loader backhoe. His businesscontinued to grow as he demonstrated tolocal contractors that using the right tool forthe job increased their effectiveness and setthem up for success. Word spread that he hadthe desire and the knowledge to give con-struction contractors the right tool for the job,no matter their needs.

After more than 10 years in New Haven, F&W alsobecame an Allis Chalmers dealer and Funk’s reputationexpanded from being a metal fabricator to a constructionequipment dealer. He began to sell and service loader back-hoes, articulated wheel loaders, dozers and crawler loaders,quickly developing a reputation for service throughoutsouthern Connecticut.In 1973, F&W became a Case construction equipment

dealer. “Our Allis Chalmers customers soon began to recognize

the quality, reliability and breadth of the Case brand,” saidRoger Funk. “Customers began buying the Case 580 loaderbackhoe and quickly found that it was the Swiss army knifethat they had been missing. This was the one machine thatthey needed to do a wide range of jobs in a variety of condi-tions.”

Adapting With the TimesFor more than 75 years, Connecticut contractors such as

road builders, demolition contractors, environmental con-tractors, homebuilders, commercial site developers, munici-palities, large and small utilities, landscapers, snow removalworkers and many others, have relied on the equipment andservices provided by the F&W team.To better serve the construction industry, F&W

Equipment Corp. became a dealer of Case, Doosan andTerex construction equipment, Kubota tractors and construc-tion equipment, Eager Beaver trailers, Samsung constructionequipment, Indeco demolition attachments and Geith buck-ets and attachments.“While representing these manufacturers, we work very

closely with financing sources to help our customers affordthe machine they need. We also have a large and diverse fleetof rental equipment,” said Funk. “This fleet includes the

largest to the smallest tracked and wheeledexcavators, articulated haul trucks, wheelloaders of all sizes, dozers, loader backhoes,wheeled and tracked skid steers, and a verywide variety of attachments for specificapplications. “We provide servicing of all types of con-

struction equipment from electrical repairs toengine and transmission repair,” said Funk.“We are able to modify equipment in manyways to make it more suitable for individualneeds.”

Working With the LocalsFour decades after opening its doors,

F&W Equipment Corp. served a huge vari-ety of local businesses from Connecticut’s

F&W has been servicing the Connecticutmarket since 1939. It was founded byH.O. Funk as a welding service.

The post war era created another gear change in the industry and for F&W.

In 1955, F&W moved from WoosterSquare, New Haven to the PostRoad in Orange and have beenthere ever since.

F&W Adapts to Changing Market by Expanding Services

small mom and pop family landscapers to all types of resi-dential developers, utility contractors, municipalities, roadinfrastructure contractors, environmental remediation, scrap,recycling and commercial and industrial developers. Thecompany worked with customers to help them grow theirbusiness. F&W shifted into high gear in 1979, when The Southern

Connecticut Gas Company purchased a fleet of 580C loaderbackhoes. Now merged with Connecticut Natural Gas, SCGmaintains the natural gas infrastructure in Connecticut, 24hours a day, seven days a week, with F&W providing thenecessary service.“They have to have their fleet ready to go,” said Funk.

“Since then, they have updated their fleet many times over. “For decades, we have been supplying R.D. Scinto, a well

know developer based in Shelton. I first met Bob Scinto, ofRD Scinto Inc in 1976 and sold him his first Case 580B in1977.” Decades and many machines later, that day-to-day rela-

tionship started by Bob Scinto and Roger Funk continuewith their sons Rob, Andy, Jim and Steve.“Joe Palmieri from Connecticut Tank Removal has grown

with F&W, with his early start on his family farm/nursery inFairfield, to working his way to become one of the largestand respected environmental remediation companies in thestate,” said Funk.“We also have long term relationships with other con-

struction companies like A.J. Penna Construction, BrennanConstruction and Muratori Builders, which have all playedbig roles in many projects in southern Connecticut using awide variety of excavators, wheel loaders, skid steers anddemolition equipment.”

Service — F&W’s ‘Secret Weapon’Jim Funk, service manager, one of the third generation

Funks at F & W, credits his hard-working employees forhelping to create F&W’s solid reputation over the last 75years. “The service team is constantly exceeding our customers’

expectations with its ability to diagnose and repair equip-

ment with all sorts of issues,” said Funk. “We have a secretweapon in the field: his name is Adam and he is a legend inthe business of getting machines back to work.“Another of our notable service heroes is Charlie. He

began operating equipment in the 1950s with cable-poweredmachines. He has been at F&W since 1992 and has rebuiltmany older machines with his vast history and technical wiz-ardry,” said Funk.

The New Normal“We have seen lots of changes since 1939, and, recently

we have made many adjustments to our business plan,” saidRoger Funk. “One of the most recent was to introduce abrand makeover that included a new logo, Web site andrefined marketing strategy that focuses our efforts on cus-tomer satisfaction and the new generation of contractors whoneed the right tools for the current market conditions.”Just like F&W grew its original small welding company

to include heavy iron sales and service, as it modified trac-tors for efficiency, changed brands and headquarters andlogos, the company has continued to adapt in the new elec-tronic age.“We have launched our ‘Fun at Work’ channel on

YouTube [www.youtube.com/user/FWequip] so our futurecustomers can see how the latest machines better serve theirneeds,” Funk said. “This also works with our Facebook page[www.facebook.com/FWEquipment) and our Twitter feed(twitter.com/fwequipment.] Our social media component isdesigned to cultivate interest in our products among futurecustomers who are active in online environments when theyare off their machines.”F&W Equipment Corp. is Connecticut’s largest Kubota

dealer in construction equipment and the largest compactdealer in western Connecticut. Most machines also are avail-able for rental. This has become a popular first step for mostnew customers.
