Historical note

New England Deaconess Hospital (NEDH) opened in 1896, rooted in the Methodist deaconessmovement in Germany. Deaconesses are ordained religious women who participate in missionary workand care for the sick. The New England Home and Training School for deaconesses had opened inBoston in 1889, and the first superintendent, Mary E. Lunn, led the drive for an associated hospitalthat would allow for hospital-trained nurses to instruct students. The hospital opened in a convertedbrownstone, a comfortable, homelike environment intended to complement the deaconesses' role inpatient care. In 1898, the first class of three graduated from New England Deaconess Hospital's nursingschool. In 1899, non-deaconesses were allowed to attend, and by 1904 the course had increased to threeyears, including a probationary period.

In 1913 the NEDH School of Nursing (NEDH SON) became associated with Simmons College, whichallowed nursing students to take science courses in addition to their hospital training. By 1922, thetraining school for deaconesses had merged with the Department of Religious Education at BostonUniversity, leaving their facilities to the sole use of the expanding School of Nursing. Increasedsecularization, professionalization, and specialization in the medical field meant more women werebecoming nurses rather than deaconesses, and NEDH began attracting specialists like Dr. Elliot P. Joslin,an authority on diabetes and one of the first to use insulin treatment. Despite the institution's gradualmove away from an overtly religious mission, non-Protestants were not widely admitted to the School ofNursing until 1951.

Nursing education shifted from diploma schools like the NEDH School of Nursing to college programsin the 1960s. In 1963, the School of Nursing ended its association with Simmons College and becameaffiliated with Northeastern University, providing students an opportunity to also receive bachelor'sdegrees. It also became more common for students to attend Boston University. The federal NurseTraining Act of 1964 meant that diploma and collegiate schools of nursing were eligible for federalgrants and student loans. Ellen D. Howland, director of the School of Nursing from 1956-1985, becamean assistant director of NEDH in 1967, long before her peers in nursing were similarly valued.

Although the School of Nursing scored in the top rankings of diploma schools throughout the 1970sand early 1980s, the strong trend towards collegiate degrees in nursing education, combined with thehospital's need for space, resulted in the decision in 1986 to close the School of Nursing. The last classentered in September 1986 and graduated in May 1989, after which the School of Nursing was officiallyclosed.

Scope and Contents

The New England Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing (NEDH SON) records consist of administrativeand student materials that document the school's trajectory from its opening in 1896 to its shutteringin 1989, nearly 100 years later. Many diverse material types record this history: in addition toadministrative records, the collection includes audiovisual materials such as audiocassettes, reel-to-reel,and VHS tapes; a large number of photographs and prints; institutional and personal scrapbooks withphotographs and clippings; and artifacts such as uniform items and medical instruments. The bulk ofthe NEDH SON materials were created by administrative offices under the school's authority. Student-created materials and artifacts from a variety of sources are also well-represented.

Records includesummary results for the NCLEX (National Council Licensure Examinations), specialized exam results, guidelines,worksheets, supporting documentation for accreditation, certificates, and nursing registration records. Scope and Contents

The coordinating agency records contain materials related to NEDH SON's official collaboration with othergreater Boston-area and Massachusetts hospitals, clinics, dispensaries, nursing homes, professional healtheducation programs, city and state health departments and boards, colleges, and universities. NEDH SON'spartnerships with these agencies allowed nursing students to gain practical, clinical experience in a variety of

Scope and Contents

Correspondence and subject files were compiled mainly by Ellen Howland, director of NEDH SON from1956-1985, and Barbara Hooker, director from 1985-1989. Correspondence consists of internal administrativecorrespondence and memos as well as external correspondence with alumni, state and federal agencies, hospitals,and businesses. Subject files contain administrative memos and records, as well as research files and older recordsdocumenting the school's origins and history. Cadet Nurse Corps records in the subject files date from 1943-1946and detail the accelerated training given to nurses during WWII as part of a government-sponsored program thatsubsidized tuition in exchange for a pledge of service during wartime. Also of interest is a notebook that appears

Subseries I: Special events, 1909-1989

Scope and Contents

Special events materials are arranged in three subseries: 1. Anniversaries and reunions; 2. Candelightingceremonies; and 3. Graduation. The anniversaries and reunions subseries contains celebration planning materialfrom NEDH SON founding anniversaries, as well as reunion material organized by class. Items from Christmascelebrations and staff coffee hours are also included in this subseries. Materials include reunion booklets,photographs, catering menus, and correspondence.

The candelighting ceremonies subseries contains information regarding the event at which graduating studentnurses received their NEDH pins. Materials include programs, speeches, and ceremony instructions. This seriesalso contains information on the capping ceremony, which marked the end of the probationary first year of nursingeducation. Information on the history and symbolism of nurse's pins and caps are also included.

The graduation subseries contains programs, invitations, copies of speeches, and ceremony instructions, as wellas student poems and songs celebrating the culmination of their education at NEDH SON. A large amount of

Series III: Artifacts and memorabilia, circa 1896-1980s

Scope and Contents

The artifacts and memorabilia series contains textiles, clothing, medical instruments, lab equipment, and a largecandle used for candelighting ceremonies. Textiles and clothing include a nurse's uniform and associated buttons,pins, hat studs, stockings, boots, and ties; several examples of nurses' caps; a surgical face mask; and a WorldWar I service banner hung by NEDH in honor of community members serving in the Army Nurse Corps. Medicalinstruments include surgical tools, a Miller-Abbott duodenal tube, a ceramic bed pan, and syringes. One syringe iscommemorative, presented in 1973 by the Eli Lilly Company to 1923 graduate Evelyn Peterson Simonds in honorof her administering the first dose of insulin in New England at NEDH, a practice pioneered by Dr. Elliott Joslin. Ahandkerchief of Dr. Joslin is also in this series. Lab equipment includes a number of glass test tube thyroid clips anda balance with weights.

Scope and Contents

This series contains the audiovisual department files as well as audiocassettes, reel-to-reel tapes, film, andVHS tapes. It has five subseries: A. Department materials; B. Audiocassettes; C. Department files contain correspondence, funding requests, pamphlets, materials related tothe department's relationship with the Helene Fuld Health Foundation, and records regarding the production ofinformational films on healthcare topics. Series VI: Course materials, circa 1881-1989

Scope and Contents

Course materials are arranged in six subseries: 1. Clinical course materials; 2. Course evaluations; 3. Course outlinesand study guides; 4. Examinations; 5. Lectures and student notes; 6. Program evaluations. Materials all subseriesare arranged in chronologically, except for lecture notes, which is arranged alphabetically. Course materials fromNEDH SON are frequently identified by course title or the students' class year. Clinical course materials consistof procedure manuals, course outlines, and other instructional booklets, such as precedent books, for studentsregarding the hands-on skills they needed to acquire. A representative sample of clinical rotation schedules andcorrelation charts are also included. Course evaluations include summaries of student survey responses about coursecontent and instructors. Course outlines and study guides are frequently found together; some lecture notes andbibliographies may also be included in the course packets. Lecture and student notes contain a set of notes attributedto Claire G. Elliott, class of 1922, whose scrapbook is included in the scrapbooks series. Also in the lecture andstudent notes subseries is a notebook that belonged to Elizabeth H. Winslow, dated around the turn of the twentiethcentury, which includes recipes for nurses in addition to notes on medical diagnoses and treatments. Programevaluation records contain assessments of various areas of the School of Nursing, such as curriculum evaluation,recruitment, faculty development and continuing education, rules and regulations, and organization plans. The final

Series IX: Photographs and prints, circa 1890-1989

Scope and Contents

The photographs and prints series contains official portraits of students, graduating classes, and nursing andmedical staff, as well as candid photographs of ceremonies, dances, and other aspects of student life. Scenes ofthe working life of nursing students, staff nurses, and physicians at the various Deaconess Hospitals and Homes,including photographs of surgical procedures, are well represented in this series. Many candid photographs wereoriginally taken for use in the NEDH SON yearbook. A number of portraits in this collection were taken by theprominent Bachrach photography studios. Images of Deaconess buildings feature the New England DeaconessHospital at Longwood, the original Deaconess Home in Boston's South End, the Deaconess Hospital in Concord,Massachusetts, and the Fresh Air Home in Haverhill, Massachusetts.

This series also includes original oversize photographic prints used in promotional pamphlets for the hospital,such as "The Sixth Decade," "Tomorrow the Impossible," and "Miracles by Gaslight," copies of which are inthe publications series. Pages from a disassembled photograph album that belonged to Claire Elliott, class of1922, relate to a scrapbook she compiled which is in the scrapbooks series. Some modern negatives of historicalphotographs were produced for use in publications about NEDH SON and are stored with their original print. Inaddition, the series contains several art prints depicting Florence Nightingale, a poster book depicting famousnurses, and an engraving of an unidentified minister.

Photographs and prints are arranged alphabetically by title or subject. Dates often correspond to the graduating classyear, rather than to the actual date of an event.

Series XI: Scrapbooks, circa 1890-1972

Scope and Contents

The scrapbook series includes fifteen scrapbooks created by students and staff of NEHD SON and its affiliatedhospitals. These scrapbooks contain a large number of photographs and clippings, as well as pamphlets, mailings,promotional materials, letters, class schedules, invitations, greeting cards, and souvenir objects. Only two of thescrapbooks have identified creators: the Claire G. Elliott NEDH scrapbook and the Warren F. Cook NEDH andPalmer Memorial Hospital scrapbook. Claire G. Elliott, who graduated from NEDH SON in 1922, began compilingher scrapbook as a probationer in 1918 and completed it in 1940. Dr. Warren F. Cook, a Methodist minister witha doctorate in Divinity, served as superintendent of NEDH from 1929 to 1954. One scrapbook, "Science andChristianity at Work in the New Palmer Memorial Hospital," appears to have been a lending publication intendedfor use in fundraising lectures. The majority of the later scrapbooks, especially those dating from the 1950s and1960s, are collections of newspaper clippings regarding NEDH and its students. Many of the scrapbooks are fragileand should be handled with care.

Series XII: Student records, 1897-1989

Scope and Contents

The student records series is arranged in five subseries: A. Diplomas; B. Grades, evaluations, and student papers;C. Graduate records; D. Roll books; and E. Student activities and ephemera. The diplomas subseries containsadministrator and student diplomas and academic credentials. The grades, evaluations, and student papers subseriescontains credential and progress reports, cumulative achievement profiles, student reflections, and grade books.The oldest grade book in this series dates from 1897-1908, and contains a record of each student's yearly exams,nursing duties undertaken, absences, and transfers. The graduate records subseries contains individual studentrecords for the graduating classes between the years 1898 and 1945; records may contain applications, grade reports,correspondence, marriage information, photographs, and medical information. Records in this subseries are arrangedchronologically. The roll books subseries also contains individual student grades and attendance between 1909 and
