Last November, nearly one hundred Shuai Chiao competitors from a dozen different countries converged on the Chinese city of Taizhou, south of Shanghai. The Taizhou 2007 International Invitational Shuai Jiao Tournament ran from November 20th to November 26th, and all participants enjoyed the modern facilities and pro-fessional, well-run, event. Many European countries sent competitors, but were hard-pressed to fill all of their team positions. The European Championships held just the month before in Spain had depleted the energy and funds of several teams. The USA Team was also short of competitors and only fielded players in six of the ten weight classes in the men’s division, and in only three on the women’s team. However, despite the lack of full teams, the USA finished a strong fourth place, the highest placing of any non-Chinese team. The Chinese had two full teams in addition to a team from Mongolia.

The USA team’s main advantage was the presence of several seasoned com-petitors and previous USA National champions: Daniel Cliff, James Van Doran, Nick Masi, Charles Lin, and Christina Roman had all competed be-fore at the international level. CARDIO TAI CHI SEMINARS PRESENTED IN CHINA

Dr.Weng presents materials to College Dean Tung Zhao-gang

On the opening day of the Taizhou event Dr. Weng was giving a Cardio Tai-chi lecture at Yangzhou University which is about one hour away from Taizhou. Invited by the Dean of College of Physical Education, Pro-fessor Tung Zhao-gang, Dr. Weng went back to this university in Yang-zhou City, home of former Chinese President Jiang Tsemin, to conduct another seminar the next day. The Coach of the Sanshou and Tai-chi Team of the university, Dr. Tian Jinlong, also invited Dr. Weng to meet his athletes and presented some training routines to Dr. Weng and Coach Jan-min Wu from Central Police University of Taiwan who had also as-sisted Dr. Weng in the earlier seminars. Dr. Weng then traveled on to Shenzhen to meet Li Jei,Vice President of Shenzhen Wushu Association, and Professor Chen, Director of the Wushu Center Shenzhen Polytechnic College for promotion of Cardio Tai-chi in that area.

Dr. Weng later went to Guangdong and Hong Kong to teach Cardio Tai-chi seminars at Qangan Lion Dancing Association and Jingwoo Association of Physical Education respectively for a few days. Before returning to the US he spent two days with Jan-yu Weng in Hong Kong, meeting with the officers of the Hong Kong Cardio Tai-chi Association which was just recently estab-lished and led by Guangdong Provincial Assembly Member He Zhonghao.

The University of East-West Medicine in Sunnyvale, California, is the first higher education institution in the United States to offer a graduate degree in Tai-chi stud-ies. The Master of Tai-chi degree recently received final approval from the national Traditional Chinese Medicine board, the Accreditation Commission of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, and the State of California. To be awarded by the UEWM College of Tai Chi, headed by Dean Chi-hsiu Daniel Weng, the degree will provide an in-depth expertise in the eastern philosophy, history, practice, and scientific the-ory behind the practice and application of Tai-chi. In addition, graduates will master the administrative and instructional skills needed to pass on this knowledge to the larger community.

Ch’ang Style Weekend in San Francisco: August 2, 3rd Back by popular demand, the Cupertino Kung-fu Club, USSA, and Dr. Weng’s Kung-fu School will be hosting our weekend of Kung-fu in sunny California. The event starts Saturday, August 2nd, at 10:00 am with a small friendly tournament for Shuai-chiao, Chang Style Tai-chi, and Chiao Chuan #1. Incorporated in the tournament fee will be a learning sparring session on Sunday with some of the local black belts where students can get feedback on their tournament performance. The tournament will cost $60 a person which includes the workout session the next day. We will also have additional seminars available to all:

MiniCamp at Ohio State University Prepared USA Team Members for China

Columbus, Ohio— The Shuai Chiao Kungfu Club at the Ohio State University hosted a full-day “Mini-Camp” tournament train-ing session and seminar on Saturday, October 27th, 2007. Led by Dr. Chi-hsiu Daniel Weng and his son, current USSA Presi-dent, Jan-yu Weng, the event brought together Shuai Chiao fighters and instructors from all over Ohio. Five competed in China.

Beginning with a comprehensive aerobic warm-up with special balance and coordination drills, the focus quickly moved to tournament strategy and specifics. Dr. Weng demon-strated the agile footwork he is famous for, and showed how to combine it with the decep-tively simple hand and arm control techniques that allow him to handle even a large oppo-nent. The afternoon was spent on applications, including a couple hours of light sparring.
