I hope everyone had a delightful, professionally fulfilling time at our recent chapter meeting m Toledo, Ohio. I h o w I did. Many people put m extraordinary effort to make that meeting a suc cess, but none more so than Born Boettcher. (Bonna, you1 receive your reward m the next life.) The other members of the Pmpam Com- mittee-Stacey Pearson, Mark Scharff, and Lynne Weber-helped as well, g m d y accept- ing my attempts to delegate virtually every one of my Program duties.

Our next meeting will be in South Bend, Indi- ana, 30 October through 1 November 1996. This will be the first meeting held on Halloween since I've been in the chapter, though I exped there have been others. I'mnot sure what sort of Hal- loween-based activities Rick Jones and Leslie Troutman have planned for us, but I intend to recommendmandatorycostumes. Ah,let'snot forget that this meeting will include our fifty- fifth anniversary celebration! Jean Geil, chair of the Ad Hoc Annivermv Steerine Committee.

Although adding or changing a standing committee is a lengthy, bylaws-mten- sive process, there's no reason why we cannot purme this idea on an informal or ad hoc basis to see what happens. Let me know if you're ~IP terested, and watch this space for further devel- opments.

faculty. She therefore applied for and received an ex- Session 4: change grant in 1995 that enabled her to spend a week interacting with the public services staff in the ~~~i~ ~ i - "Ownership vs. Access: Issues in Coopera- bray at Northwestei university. She reported that she found it useful to "shadow" staff members on reference desk duty, as well as to interview them individually. As a result of her experience she has become more active and involved with the music faculty at her own instiiu- tion.

Allie Goudy (Western Illinois University) reported on her exchange visit to St. Olaf College in March 1995 to learn about &th Christensen's pro@am of course-integrated bibliographic instruction, and to consider collection d e velop&ent issues. In April, Beth repaid AUie's visit by traveling on an exchange grant to Western Illinois. Like Allie, she famed on bibliographic instruction and col- lectiondevelopment AUie stated that she came backfrom St. Olaf full of ideas about developing her own compre hensive, courseintegrated bibliograpkc instructionid information literacy program. (Beth was not able to at- , * " tend the owli in^ ree en meet& and report firsthand on her exchange.)

Laura Gayle Green (University of Missouri at Kansas City) went to the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign in April 1994 to work with Internet guru Leslie Troutman. Her goals were to educate herself about Internet resources and to learn strategies for teaching the Internet to music faculty and students. Issues Leslie and Laura discussed included making specialized databases available on the Internet, copyright, and critical think- ing. Laura reported that she now devotes more of her bibliographic instruction program to the Internet. Leslie stated that the exchange benefited her as well, giving her the opportunity to become familiar with an array of the latest technological devices.

Following the presentations of Exchange Program par- ticipants there was a brief open discussion of the pro- gram and its value to the chapter. The collective opinion expressed was that the program has been worthwhile up to this point, and that it should continue so that other Midwest Chapter librarians may benefit from it in the future..

University of Kentucky During the first session of the morning, "Ownership vs. Ac- cess: Issues in Cooperative Collection Management," Ruth Inman (University of Illinois at Chicago) gave a brief history of the ARL libraries' cooperative collection development efforts that began in the mid-1WI)s. She noted that most attempts cen- tered m m d the cooperative collecting of expensive research materials. In recent years, declining budgets have sparked a renewed interst in cooperative collection development.

Don Roberts (Northwestern University) described cooperative efforts made by the Committee on Institutional Cooperation. Library directors and officers from collection development, automation, public services, and ILL make up the repmta- tives to CIC. The liiraries of CIC, collectively, own 58 million volumes and 650,000 journals.

CIC has received a grant to establish a virtual electronic library Goals of this grant are: (1) to provide amss to all CIC collec- tions through one d m catalog; (2) to use PACLOAN to provide patron initiated ILL quests; and (3) to use PACLINK for mounted electronic indexes and full-text databases.

CIC has identified six areas of cooperative colledion develop ment. (Unforhmtel~ music is not one of them.) These areas are: (1) African studies; (2) gay and lesbian studies; (3) l i n p tics; (4) pharmacology; (5) physics; and (6) SouthAsianstudies.

J o d are a concern of all CIC members. Electronic access may be more expensive, but users then have round-theclock amss. A number of goals have been set in this area. For ex- ample, for items costing more than $5,000, CIC librarians will confer with each other to avoid duplication. A pilot project
