New Funding Opportunities

Sustaining Support for Armed Forces Communities (UK)

In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust has launched a new £6 million programme to provide short-term support for existing charitable projects supporting Armed Forces communities in the UK.

The Sustaining Support to Armed Forces Communities programme will award grants of up to £100,000 to Armed Forces charities and charities with an existing track record of supporting Armed Forces communities.

Two funding tracks are available:

Project Funding Track

Grants of up to £50,000 or up to £100,000 For existing projects only that are well used by people from Armed Forces communities. Will fund up to 2 Full Time Equivalent staff to deliver your project or activity for a year; plus

other reasonable costs.

Core Funding Track

For Armed Forces Charities only Grants of up to £50,000 or up to £100,000 Will fund up to two Full Time Equivalent core staff where that enables your organisation to

keep delivering services. Can also apply for help for transformational costs to help your charity be in a stronger position

to deliver services and support in future.

The deadline for applications is midday on the 4th June 2021.

The Austin and Hope Pilkington Trust awards grants to charitable organisations for projects which support those in society who face the greatest challenges and whose opportunities are most limited. Each year the Trust awards grants to UK registered charities or organisations that are exempt from registration for projects under different specific award categories.

The current grants round is funding projects that support people who are homeless, a group which has been disproportionately affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. UK registered charities with an income and expenditure of £1,000,000 and over are able to apply for grants of £5,000 to continue their much-needed support.

Priority will be given to applications that help Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities.

The deadline for applications is the 30th April 2021.

Sky Media Announces £2 Million Sky Zero Footprint Fund

As part of its campaign to be a net-zero carbon business by 2030, Sky Media has announced a new competition to help firms in the media sector reduce their impact on the climate.

The Sky Zero Footprint Fund is available to media agencies, creative agencies and brands to support businesses to accelerate their own sustainability initiatives and engage audiences with environmental issues through the power of TV and advertising. Five winning advertisements will be selected based on their commitment to a carbon zero future by a panel of judges with strong views on advertising, creativity, and sustainability.

The most impactful and creative idea will secure £1 million in advertising support with four runner-up prizes of £250,000 each.

Applications can be made between the 6th April and the 14th May 2021

Applications (UK)

Public Sector organisations can apply for funding of up to £5 million through the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme. A total of £75 million has been made available through the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy with a focus on heat decarbonisation that reduce that reduce non-traded emissions.

The following organisations are eligible to apply:

Central government departments and their arm’s length bodies (set out in Public Bodies as published by the Cabinet Office, see here)

For central government departments where their roles are reserved (i.e., not devolved Governments of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland), funding may be used for estates located anywhere within the UK

Emergency services Institutions of further and higher education Local authorities Maintained schools within the state education system, including academies, Multi-Academy

Trusts and free schools Nursery schools maintained by a local authority NHS Trusts and Foundation Trusts

The funding can be used to install low carbon heating systems to replace a fossil-fueled heating system that are coming to the end of its useful life. A list of eligible technologies can be found here.

Applicants can also use their own funds to top up a project which they wish to complete.

There is no application deadline, however, all projects that receive funding must be fully installed and completed before 31st March 2022.

The National Lottery Community Fund is offering grants of up to £300,000 for community-led projects that brings communities across the UK together.

The Bringing People Together programme will support projects run by charities, voluntary and community organisations, CICs, CIOs and statutory bodies that build stronger connections across communities and improve the infrastructure and conditions that are needed to strengthen these connections.

This is funding is from the National Lottery Community Fund UK Portfolio. The UK Portfolio is where the National Lottery Community Fund explores new approaches, experiments with how to do things differently, and look to fund work that is more future focussed. 

The Fund expects to make up to twenty awards over the next twelve months to enable organisations to deliver collaborative projects across at least two countries in the UK that focus on equality, diversity and inclusion, particularly amongst communities disproportionality affected by the pandemic such as people of colour, disabled people, LGBTQ+ people, and asylum seekers or refugees.

Applications can be made at any time.

Funding to Improve Educational Outcomes for Young Carers (UK)

In response to the impact that the Covid-19 crisis has had on the education of young carers and young adult carers in the UK, the Triangle Trust 1949 has opened a new funding round to address learning gaps linked to the pandemic.

Registered charities, not-for-profit social enterprises and community interest companies can apply for grants of up to £30,000 for up to two years (£60,000 in total) to expand on existing projects that aim to raise educational outcomes for young carers up to the age of 25.

Applications are particularly welcome from organisations working in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

The deadline for applications is 12 noon on the 11th May 2021.

Funding Available to Organisations Tackling Racial Inequality and Deprivation (UK)

Organisations working with deprived communities within the UK experiencing racial inequality can apply for grants of up to £10,000 to meet their core costs.

To be eligible applicant organisations need to be a UK Registered Charity or Community Interest Company (CIC) with an income of below £500,000 per year.

In addition to tackling racial inequality, organisations must also be working to address one of the following themes:

Health including mental health Vulnerable people Food poverty Domestic abuse Education Poverty Supporting refugee and asylum-seeker communities

The funding is being made available through the Global Majority Fund which was launched by Comic Relief in early 2021 and is managed by the Muslim Charities Forum.

The closing date for applications is 5pm on the 30th April 2021.

Funding for Projects that Tackle the Root Causes of Social Inequity (UK)

The next closing date for grant application to the Scurrah Wainright Charity is the 14th May 2021.

The Charity supports a wide range of charitable projects with an emphasis on social reform and tackling the root causes of social inequity. The charity favours causes that are outside the mainstream, and unlikely to be funded by other charities. Typically, grants are between £1,000 and £5,000.

The charity runs three funding programmes:

Yorkshire. Trustees give priority to applicants working in the Yorkshire region. Your organisation needs not be based in the region but the project itself must directly benefit the Yorkshire community. We fund national charitable organisations ONLY if the project is specifically working in the Yorkshire region, with clear evidence of local control and access to the grant.

Southern Africa, particularly Zimbabwe. Projects that have applied to the Andrew Wainwright Reform Trust because they meet the

AWRT's broad objectives to work for a just and democratic society and to redress political and social injustices, but have not been able to proceed with an application to that Trust because they are eligible for charitable funding.

Previous organisations supported include:

The Boaz Trust a Christian organisation serving destitute asylum seekers in Greater Manchester which received a grant of £2,000.

The Grandparents Association in Leeds which received a grant of £4,800.

Organisations applying do not have to be a charity, but its work must satisfy the Charity Commission's definition of charitable purposes and public benefit.

There is a two-stage application process and applicants asked to complete and submit the preliminary registration form

Grants of up to £15,000 available to Social Entrepreneurs (UK)

Grants plus business support are available to social entrepreneurs that are looking to start or grow an existing social venture. The funding is being made available through the UnLtd the leading provider of support to social entrepreneurs in and around the UK.

The grants are being made available through two funding streams:

Grants of up to £15,000 to grow an existing social enterprise Grants of up to £5,000 to start a new social enterprise.

UnLtd are committed to providing 50% of their awards to Black, Asian and minority ethnic social entrepreneurs, and/or disabled social entrepreneurs.

To be eligible applicants need to be:

Aged 16 and over Living in the United Kingdom Willing to participate in a learning experience Working to benefit people living in the United Kingdom Have a real social impact Fulfil a clear need and demand Have clear outputs and goals

The closing date for this funding round is the 30th June 2021.

Transformational Grants for Small Charities and Not for Profit Organisations (UK)

On the 12th April 2021, the Fore will be re-opening its grants programme. The Fore will be making grants of up to £30,000 to support small organisations working with marginalised groups and led by people in the community that may have found it hard to access trust and foundation funding in the past.

The Fore makes unrestricted grants for up to three years that have the potential to have a transformational impact on an organisation. Transformational impact includes helping an organisations become more sustainable, more efficient, to grow significantly or enabling an organisation to take a major step forward of some kind.

Any registered charity, CIC, CIO or Community Benefit Society with turnover of under £500,000 in the last financial year is eligible to apply.

To apply for funding, organisations must first register some basic contact details at the start of each funding round. The number of registrations accepted for each round is capped and registrations are run on a first-come, first-served basis. Once the cap is reached, the round is closed, so please register early (Registrations open at 10am).

In previous years the cap has been reached within 24 hours of the funding round opening for applications.

Grants to Promote and Secure Better and Safer Roads (UK)

Grants and bursaries of between £5,000 - £25,000 are available for research, education and community projects with the aim of promoting and securing better and safer roads in terms of design, engineering and aesthetics including enhancements of the experience of road users. Funded activity includes courses leading to qualifications related to traffic engineering and transport planning, research projects and programmes or schemes to improve the highway network and the roadside environment, for example roadside parks and open spaces.

The Rees Jeffries Road Fund Grants awards grants that:

Contribute to the cost of lectures, studies and scholarship calculated to foster the improvement of design and layout of public highways and adjoining land

Promote schemes for the provision of roadside parks and open spaces Encourage the improvement of existing and provision of additional public highways, bridges,

tunnels, footpaths, verges, and cycleways.... to secure the maximum of safety and beauty.

Priority is given to projects which lie outside the scope of other funders such as government agencies and research councils. The Fund also welcomes applications that include contributions from other funders.

Eligible applicants include educational institutions, charities and social enterprises. There is no upper or lower limit for grant applications although grants most commonly fall in the range £5,000 - £25,000.

Anyone considering applying to the Fund must, in the first instance, contact the Secretary at [email protected] with a short outline of their proposal including the level of funding being sought to register their interest and obtain an application form.

The next closing date for applications is the 4th June 2021.

Grants awarded previously include:

CIHT: £10,000 towards an exhibition to promote Women in Transport SATRO: £2,500 to support work to help young people to be inspired and enthusiastic about

their education and their future careers especially in the area of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM)

Plantlife: £18,233 to develop a new national ‘best practice’ standard for the management of roadside verges.

Science and Chemistry Equipment Grants for Schools (UK)

Teachers at primary or secondary schools can apply for a grant of up to £1,000 towards the purchase of equipment to support the delivery of Primary Science or Chemistry lessons. Bids are invited for the purchase of items of equipment that cannot be purchased through a school’s mainstream teaching budget and which would enrich the learning experience of students.

The Royal Society of Chemistry aims to support schools in presenting Chemistry lessons that enrich the learning experience of students in either primary (science) or secondary (chemistry) studies. The Biological and Medicinal Chemistry Sector (BMCS) of the Society awards Enhanced Equipment grants towards the purchase of equipment that supports delivery of the practical aspect of chemistry education. Applications will be enhanced by a demonstration of the diversity of application of the equipment within and between student cohorts.

A teacher at a primary or secondary school should make the application.

The funding is being made available through the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Enhanced Equipment grant scheme and the next deadline for applications is 15th May 2021.

Funding for Links with Japan (UK)

Grants of £2,000 - £7,000 are available to promote and support interaction between the two countries. Daiwa Foundation Small Grants can cover all fields of activity, including educational and other projects and events. New initiatives are especially encouraged.

Projects that have received funding in the past include:

Beckfoot School (Bingley) which received a grant of £3,000 to support a two-week curriculum-based school exchange visit by ten students and two teachers to Hiroshima Kokusai High School;

Dene Magna School which received a grant of £4,000 to support a school exchange visit by three teachers and nine pupils to enhance links established in 2002 with two partner schools in Okinawa and to consolidate Japanese as part of its curriculum.

The next closing date for applications is the 30th September 2021.

Funding for Cultural and Educational Links with Japan (UK)

The Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation has announced that the next application deadline for its grants making programme is the 15th September 2021.

The Foundation seeks to promote mutual understanding and cooperation through financial support for activities in the following fields:

Arts and Culture Humanities and Social Issues Japanese Language Medicine and Health Science, Technology and Environment Sport Youth and Education

The Foundation's grants average £1,500 to £2,000 and do not normally exceed £5,000 for larger-scale projects.

The Foundation’s awards are intended to provide “pump-priming” and not core funding of projects, but even small grants have enabled a wide range of projects to reach fruition, such as:

Visits between the UK and Japan by academics, professionals, creative artists, teachers, young people, journalists and representatives of civic and non-governmental organisations. (Due to the ongoing pandemic and current travel restrictions, the Foundation aims to be flexible regarding project schedules and support for activity taking place remotely).

Research and collaborative studies, seminars, workshops, lectures and publications in academic and specialist fields

Teaching and development of Japanese language and cultural studies in schools, Further Education colleges and universities

Exhibitions, performances and creative productions by artists, musicians, film-makers, writers and theatre groups

Organisations that have successfully applied to the Foundation include:

Hessle High School and Sixth Form College which received a grant of £3,000 to visit to Japan to create curriculum on Japan in Key Stage 3 Geography lessons.

Truro College which received a grant of £2,000 for a football exchange programme with Tokai Daigo High School in Japan.

The Boston & Hakusan City Exchange Programme received a grant of £3,500 for an exchange programme between school children from Boston and Hakusan City.

Campion School received a grant of £2,000 to support a school trip to Tokyo for students of Japanese.

Escomb Primary School received a grant of £3,000 for an exchange visit with Ogawara Minami Elementary School.

Harold Hyam Wingate Foundation (UK)

The Wingate Foundation has announced that the next deadline to apply is the 9th June 2021.

The Foundation supports projects, institutions and activities in the following areas:

Jewish Life and Learning Performing Arts (excluding music) Music Medical Research Travel grants

Applications are invited from smaller charitable organisations only; the Trustees will not consider approaches from large charities who are well represented on the High Street or their local branch offices.

Previous projects supported include:

£5,000 per year for 3 years to Little Angel Theatre as support for Little Angel Studios, a new building dedicated to education, community and outreach work.

£3,250 to The Voices Foundation for 1-Year Foundation Programme in a cluster of five schools in Essex to ensure that every child irrespective of ability, means or background has access to high quality music education through singing and the use of equipment

£6,000 a year for three years to Anne Frank Trust UK to fund educational work in three schools.

Applicants need to detail how the funding they are seeking can be used under the constraints of the current HM Govt Coronavirus (COVID-19) guidance for the sector.

Leeds Building Society Charitable Foundation Grant (UK)

UK registered charities working to help those at disadvantage in society can apply to the Leeds Building Society Charitable Foundation for support. Grants of between £250 - £1,000 are available to cover the costs involved directly supporting those in need including those with disabilities, affected by homelessness, or with serious health issues.

Previous grants have gone to organisations supporting young people in applying for jobs and towards the purchase of a portable multi-sensory environment, that will turn any room into a sensory room.

Donations usually fund items of "capital expenditure" i.e. items must directly help those in need, rather than contributing to the charity's running costs.

The Foundation accepts applications from UK registered charities with a turnover of less than £1 million per year.

Applications are reviewed every quarter. The next deadline for applications is the 3rd May 2021.

Projects previously funded include:

SASH, an organisation that provides guidance on creating CVs and applying for jobs to aid homeless 16 to 25-year olds, received £985.

Byker Community Association received £500 to buy new books and build an interactive story hub designed by the children of Byker themselves.

Hellenic Society Hardship Grants (UK)

The Hellenic Society makes grants of various kinds to schools, universities and other institutions, undergraduates, graduate students and young researchers which are engaged in Hellenic Studies at all levels. In response to the coronavirus, the Society is temporarily offering small hardship grants to those who have been affected by the crisis.

Funding of up to £200 will be made to:

those who have held a temporary post in a UK Higher Education Institutions in the last twelve months and whose employment has come to an end during 2020;

self-funded Post Graduate Researchers, especially those in their third or fourth year; and self-funded MA/MPhil/MSt students.

Applications should be received by the last day of every month. They will be dealt with as soon as possible in the month after they are received and monies disbursed by the 15th day of that month.

Applicants should email [email protected] with the following details: a brief account of the personal circumstances necessitating the grant, the purpose for which the money is to be used, and the precise sum needed (not more than 300 words in total). They should also include the name of their previous line manager or thesis supervisor as appropriate and ask them to email the same address separately to confirm their personal circumstances in broad terms.

New £20 Million Fund to Divert Young People from Violence (England and Wales)

A new £20 million fund has been launched to evaluate different diversion approaches that work best at preventing 10 to 17-year-olds in England and Wales from becoming involved in violence.

The funding is being made available through the Youth Endowment Fund’s - Another chance - Diversion from the criminal justice system – themed funding round. Diversion approaches could include mental health support, whole family interventions or mentoring (for example).

The Youth Endowment Fund is aiming to identify around 10-20 programmes that are ready for robust impact evaluation or could be supported to reach this point within two years.

The funding is available to any organisation – including charities, public services or the private sector – that receive referrals from a relevant statutory service (for example, the police, schools, local youth offending team or social care).

The fund will be open for applications between the 19th April and 14th May 2021.

£200 Million Summer School Fund (England)

To support young people in England who have suffered the most disruption to their education as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, the UK Government is providing £200 million in summer school funding.

State-funded secondary and special schools, non- maintained special schools and pupil referral units will receive from £59.70 per place per day to deliver a one- or two-week programme offering a blend of educational, sport, enrichment and wellbeing activities, with a focus on pupils making the transition into year 7.

Funding should be used to cover all costs associated with running the activities, including additional staff costs, free meals for eligible children and transport.

Schools will be asked to sign up to run summer schools by the end of April, and confirm their plans in June. They will have the flexibility to target the funding to whoever they think could benefit most.

Funding Available to Celebrate the Windrush Generation (England)

Community groups, charities and grass root organisations across the UK can apply for funding to raise awareness of the Windrush Scheme, the Windrush Compensation Scheme or both.

The Home Office is making a total of £500,000 in funding available for phase two of the Windrush Community Fund. The fund is administered by Voice4Change England.

The funding is available to charities, community and grassroots organisations. Several organisations can work together on a project and apply as a consortium. There is no limit on the number of organisations that can be involved in a group bid. The maximum award for each application is £25,000.

Eligible organisations can apply for activities including:

holding events producing and distributing marketing materials accessing and using communication channels securing support from partners

The closing date for applications is 11.59pm on the 30th June 2021.

Zoo Animals Fund (England)

The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs has announced that zoos and aquariums which need additional support in caring for their animals and essential maintenance following a drop in income caused by the coronavirus pandemic can apply for grants of up to £730,000 through the Zoo Support Fund.

Grants will be awarded on the basis of need where zoos face a shortfall despite doing everything they can to reduce their costs and raise income. This will include money to pay for veterinary care, medicines and animal feed as well as paying for staffing costs for those directly providing animal care.

The fund also offers grants to support rehoming costs in the event that zoos need to downsize or potentially close, and is open to those zoos which have already received support through the £14 million Zoo Support Fund.

The Zoo Animals Fund will remain open for applications until the 28th May 2021.

Taking Teaching Further Programme Re-opens for Applications (England)

The Education and Training Foundation has announced that round 4 of the Taking Teaching Further programme is now open for applications. The Taking Teaching Further programme is a national initiative to attract experienced industry professionals with expert technical knowledge and skills to work in Further Education (FE). The focus will be across any of the 15 technical teaching routes.

Round 4 will run from April 2021 until July 2023.

The programme’s long-term aims are to:

raise the profile and prestige of skilled FE teaching, particularly among industry professionals; and

increase the overall number of skilled technical teaching roles by helping providers to support experienced industry professionals with the training that they require to become FE teachers.

Taking Teaching Further Round 4 funding is available for all FE providers with two routes to access the programme depending on provider type.

Route 1

Route 1 of the programme is open to all FFE Colleges, Sixth Form Colleges, and Specialist Designated Institutions in England. Places will be made available to all colleges on a draw-down basis.

Route 2

Route 2 of the programme is open to all independent training providers, employer led providers, third sector training providers, local authority providers, and adult and community learning providers. These places will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis and it is strongly advised that providers register early for places.

Funding for Music Making Projects For Young People in Challenging Circumstances (England)

Schools, as well as other not-for-profit organisations, can apply for grants to fund developmental music-making projects for disadvantaged young people as well as for projects that support the development of the workforce, organisations and the wider music making sector. The funding is being made available through Youth Music, England's largest children's music charity, which provides funding for music-making projects.

Youth Making's funding programme is made up of several separate funds. These are:

Fund A which offers small grants (£2,000 to £30,000) for high quality music-making projects that will help to achieve a musically inclusive England.;

Fund B offers medium-sized grants (30,001 - £150,000 per year for up to two years) to support music-making and music-making related activities for children and young people (aged 0-25) facing barriers; and workforce and organisational development projects to promote a relevant, diverse, and inclusive music offer for all children and young people.

Fund C awards larger grants of up to £160,000 per year for projects with a dual role of delivery and strategic work; expanding and embedding high quality, inclusive music-making. This is currently closed and is expected to open for applications later in 2021.

Music Education Hub Development Fund which offers grants of up to £50,000 and are available to partnerships of at least three Music Education Hub lead organisations. This is currently closed to applications

Incubator Fund which offers grants of £5,000 to £30,000 and are available to businesses, collectives, and not-for-profits working in the music industries. The fund is designed to help open up access to sustainable careers in music for people aged 18-25, particularly those who are underrepresented; and to support creative employers to innovate and incubate new and diverse talent. The Fund is currently closed.

In applying for funding schools will have to justify how the activities to be funded do not duplicate Department of Education funding.

The next closing date for applications to Fund A is the 30th July 2021.

The deadline for submitting an Expression of Interest to Fund B is the 7th May 2021. For applications successful at this stage the deadline for submiting full a application will be the 9th July.

Disabled applicants that need further support to make an application to Youth Music, can apply to the Access Fund. This provides funding to cover any additional access costs that might be required to make an application to one of Youth Music’s main grant funds. There are no deadlines for this fund as they would coincide with any open funding rounds.

Return to Play: Community Asset Fund (England)

Sports clubs, charities and not for organisations can apply for grants of between £10,001 and £50,000 to help clubs and community groups through the ongoing coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic to return to play.

The Return to Play: Community Asset Fund provides capital funding, to help local sports clubs and organisations to adapt and open important places and spaces so people within their community can return to play and physical activity, safely. The focus is on responding to the immediate challenges of sports and physical activity returning to play.

Priority will be given to:

Projects located in areas of high deprivation Organisations working with Black, Asian and minority ethnic communities, people on lower

incomes, disabled people, people with long-term health conditions and people experiencing a greater burden of care because of coronavirus.

Organisations that don't have a significant level of reserve funding available to utilise.

Funding Reminders Cure Parkinson's Trust Grant (UK)

Commercial organisations, appropriately qualified scientists or clinicians based in an accredited university or hospital in any country worldwide can now apply for funding for laboratory or clinical research projects. Projects should have the potential to advance knowledge that might lead to a cure for Parkinson’s disease or that represent a substantial advance in treatment.

The Cure Parkinson’s Trust has a particular interest in projects that show the potential to delay, slow, stop reverse or prevent the progression of Parkinson’s disease. There are no specific limits to the amount of funding available but previous awards have been between £50,000 and £250,000 with a duration of 1-3 years.

Applications are considered four times a year, the next deadline for applications is the 4th June 2021.

Funding to Pilot New Ideas in the Teaching of Mathematics (UK)

Individuals working in secondary schools, colleges of further education and higher education institutions (including PhD students) can apply for grants of £600 towards the costs of running an educational activity relating to mathematics.

The funding is being made available through the Institute of Mathematics Education Grants Scheme. The aim of the scheme is to enable organisations to pilot new ideas, approaches and practices or undertake collaborative activities that would not be possible under existing funding schemes.

Applications are also welcomed from primary schools but need to involve collaboration with a secondary school, FE college or HEI.

Applications from other organisations whose work will offer benefits to schools, FE colleges or HEIs are also encouraged and will be judged on their merits.

Funding for Projects That Contribute to the Ongoing Transformation of the Northern Ireland Conflict (UK)

Registered, excepted or exempt charities based within any of the four jurisdictions of the UK can apply for programme or project funding or for unrestricted or core support for work which will contribute to the ongoing transformation of the Northern Ireland conflict.

The Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust (JRCT) aims to fund work delivered by organisations, individuals and charities and grants range from a few hundred pounds to £100,000+ and may be single payments or spread over up to three years.

JRCT is interested in funding work which:

addresses the root causes of violence and injustice, rather than alleviating symptoms cannot be funded from other sources is likely to make a long-term, strategic difference addresses injustices around the intersections of gender, ethnicity, and class

Funded projects will address the following priority areas:

Strengthening human rights and equality Supporting inclusive, non-sectarian and participatory politics Supporting processes of demilitarisation Dealing with the past i.e. work that promotes a shared understanding of the root causes of

past violence, or which encourages government to implement initiatives to address the legacy of violence at a societal level.

Responding to the dual harms of Covid-19 and systemic racism

The Trust is particularly interested in receiving applications related to women’s participation in all of these areas.

In addition to applications from Northern Ireland, it is open to receiving applications from Britain and the Republic of Ireland for work related to the above areas, and for work with an all-Ireland focus. Registered, excepted or exempt charities based within any of the four jurisdictions of the UK can apply for programme or project funding or for unrestricted or core support. Local work will be supported only where it is likely to have a wider impact, for example, if it is testing a model which can then be replicated or is addressing a local issue that has wider social or political implications.

Biffa Award has launched a new funding round through its Biffa Award Partnership Grants scheme. Grants of between £250,000 and £750,000 are available for:

Built Environment projects that transform cultural, heritage or visitor centres. They should inspire and promote learning, creativity and participation on a grand scale. Previous projects funded under this theme include the redevelopment of a spectacular science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) experience at Winchester Science Museum.

Natural Environment projects that restore or improve the environment and the natural systems or habitats that support it. Previous projects funded under this theme include reintroducing Beavers to Knapdale Forest in Scotland, restoring 100 hectares of peatlands in the North Pennines and creating hundreds of acres of rich pollinator habitat and wildflower meadows across England and Wales.

Preference will be given to projects in which Biffa Award is the majority funder; which work in partnership with other organisations; and which engage with people through improving their knowledge of the asset.

To be eligible for funding the applicant organisation and project must be eligible for enrolment and registration with the scheme regulator, ENTRUST. This will be a condition of any grant approved. Each project site must be within 15 miles of a significant Biffa operation or active Biffa landfill site. A postcode checker is on the Biffa Award website.

The closing date for submitting an online Expressions of Interest is the 1st June 2021.
