Publisher’s NoteThe one thing I find brides are looking for the most when planning their wedding is new ideas. Fresh concepts in color themes, favors and entertainment, anything to create a distinctive event.

With that in mind, we have redoubled our efforts to bring you

the latest wedding trends. Pick and choose what works for you and customize to suit your own style. This issue of New Hampshire Wedding Magazine, www.nhweddingmagazine.com and our bridal shows* highlight modern themes in bridal fashion, photography, catering and more. There is no better way to create a unique wedding than by combining traditional and contemporary on your big day. For example, your wedding may take place at a historical inn, but your color theme is a bold pink and orange! See page 6 for current wedding tips.

We continue to celebrate New Hampshire as an ideal wedding location. Showcased are three different regions of NH and wedding professional’s products and services from those areas. The Monadnock, White Mountains and Seacoast region are highlighted on page 36. Looking for a chic wedding venue? Photographer and writer, Jennifer Belkus Goolkasian of Aphrodite Wedding Photography, writes about unique places to hold your wedding reception in NH on page 44 .

I continue to be amazed at the weddings we have the honor of featuring, which you will see throughout the issue. One thing they all have in common, besides lots of love, is how the couples manage to create a day reflecting their personality and style. Everything from small details to the wedding location itself echo where the couple has been and where they are headed. Oh, and they are always pleasantly surprised at how perfectly the day comes together. .

Congratulations and thank you for being a part of New Hampshire Wedding Magazine | Website | Bridal Shows.

WeddingTrendsUntraditional Cake Toppers Forget a figurine of the bride and groom on top of the cake. These days, some of the hottest toppers are fresh flowers or a monogram.

Videography On what other day in your life will you be as radiant and happy? Capture it to relive the moments that were a blur.

Colored Gems Diamonds are still a girls best friend but how nice will a ruby, sapphire or emer-ald look sitting next to it? Very!

Chocolate is the New Vanilla Wedding cakes are getting dark and rich. Vanilla cakes are traditional, but you can indulge your passion for choco-late in everything from your cake to cookies to candy.

Brown and Blue This color combo is soft and pretty, yet rich and dramatic. Most importantly accessible! Find it in bridesmaid dresses, to linens, to invitations.

Hire a band or DJ? Can’t decide-how about both? Many couples hire live entertainment and a DJ for the best of both worlds.

Dessert Stations You don’t have to just serve cake at your reception. Fruit, pastries, cookies, and candies will let you and your guest indulge.

Small Wedding Guests lists are getting smaller and smaller these days, typically less than 125 people. You get to spend time with everyone, and guests get don’t feel overwhelmed.

Light Shows If you want to create a memorable event, consider using lighting to accent walls in your signature color or project your names on the dance floor.

Change of Dress Wear the formal gown for your ceremo-ny and photos, and a flirty and fun dress for dancing at your reception.

Signature Drinks Create a cocktail to call your own based on your wedding colors or honeymoon location.

Monochromatic Colors If a color combo is not you, showcase a single color like yellow. Simple, but dramatic.

Heidi had always dreamed of getting married at her parent’s home in Fitzwilliam, NH. The land had been in her family for many generations, and the scenery of water, trees and mountains made a beautiful backdrop for Heidi and Rob’s big day. The couple live nearby and have been building a native plant nursery for the past couple years.

The day was relaxed and reflected the comfort of the couple’s lifestyle. There was a mix of out-of-town and local guests who helped celebrate with Heidi and Rob. Heidi admits that there was concern expressed about having the wedding outdoors since it had been a rainy summer. The couple held out hope for sunny skies, knowing they would make the best of it either way. Ultimately, the day turned out in their favor. Someone wrote in their guest book, “Mother nature takes care of those who take care of her.” Maybe it was karma!

What advice do you have for newly married couples?Enjoy the honeymoon pha se because i t won’t l a st . Nouri sh your re lat ionship and f ind t ime to ge t away together. Communicat ion i s key. If that ’s not working don’t be a f ra id to cons ider a marr iage counse lor. I t ake part in a community marr iage in i t iat ive, which i s a fa i th ba sed prog ram counse l ing en-gaged couples to prepare them for mar-r iage. We he lp couples t ackle problems they weren’t aware of that can of ten spoi l a marr iage. It ’s a l so an opportunity for couples to sort out the i r d i f fe r-ences . Although some d i f ferences aren’t resolved , they come to an ag reement in the end . I w i sh my husband and I had th i s prog ram before we got marr ied , but I ge t so much out of i t e ven now.

What were some of your responsibilities as Mrs. New Hampshire? It ’s important to se t an objec t ive for the year, to know what you want to ge t out of the exper ience. I took advantage of my t i t le to work in the com-munity, and attend d i f ferent funct ions and char i -t ie s . My pa ss ion i s speak ing to women. I spoke at a Mother and Daughter Tea , and my ow n Mother and Daughter attended , a s we l l . I ’ve worked w ith numerous char i t ie s l ike Walk for Hunger and the Foster-Adoptive Community. Whi le i t ’s not mandatory a s Mrs . Ne w Hampshire to do th i s , a f ter a l l most of the women enter ing the pageant have fami l ie s and careers , I thought i t wa s impor-tant to use the opportunity to he lp. People are inspi red by persona l test imonies . If I can speak about overcoming my ow n cha l lenges , maybe i t can he lp others to overcome the i rs .

What does Mrs. New Hampshire represent?Judges look for someone to represent marr ied women of NH. Inter v ie ws are 50% of what you are judged on , so they look for a woman who i s ar t icu late, sp i r i ted , br ight , and conf ident . I d id w in the f i tness port ion of the pageant , which I had se t out to w in . I wa s proud to accompl i sh that goa l .

I s trongly encourage any woman i f they ’ve e ver thought of enter ing a pageant to do i t . Although there are preconce ived not ions about pageants , I had noth-ing but pos i t ive exper iences w ith the pageant and be ing Mrs . Ne w Hampshire. Mrs . 2007 wa s 50 years old ; you can be marr ied for 3 months or 30 years , t a l l or short , i t doesn’t matter. It ’s a l l about ce lebrat ing women and the i r persona l and profess iona l accompl i shments .

As a bride, look for vendors who can compliment your needs with your ceremony and reception locations. You want a consistent style and flow throughout your wedding day. From your updo to the final dance and everything in between, a successful wedding depends on the vendors you hire.

Looking for a memorable honeymoon location? You don’t have to go far when you consider the options NH has to offer. Choose from quiet or bustling towns, mountains or sandy beaches, nature or culture, or experience all! The Granite State is filled with ways to enjoy the start of your life together as a married couple.

The photos are shot at venues depictive of their region. The Old Meetinghouse of Francestown is nestled in between trees on a quintessential country road in the Monadnock hills while the Mount Washington Resort impressively stands out among the majestic White Mountains. Located in the center of an historic Seacoast town, The Exeter Inn welcomes guests with charm and a comfortable elegance. Whether you are from NH or coming from out of state to have your wedding here, the natural landscape of your preferred location will undoubtedly set the backdrop for your special day. Also in the photos, we used the services of wedding professionals experienced in their field and knowledgeable about the towns in which they work.

The Monadnock, Seacoast and Mt. Washington regions have a unique feel and style reflective of each area, but all share a common beauty

which makes New Hampshire a perfect place for a wedding. The following photos celebrate these three regions and the wedding professionals who work and live in them.

We love the churches, country clubs, castles, inns, resorts, and sparkling waterfronts of picturesque New Hampshire. We don’t want to sway

you from what’s right for you. You can personalize your location, however, with the same creativity that you apply to your colors and accessories. Non-traditional options offer novelty and meaning.

Does the venue tie into your passions? Does it tell a story? Have you forged memories there? We’ve collected a few inspirational stories from couples who took the leap, for one reason or another, and landed their wedding in extraordinary settings.

Sarah launchbury and monte bohanan ceremony: the muSic hall, portSmouth/ reception: the roSa reStaurant, portSmouth

“The theater is really where I get that sense of community and exaltation that many associate with church,” said Monte. He and Sarah value the history of this designated “American Treasure.” The 900-seat theatre is the oldest in New Hampshire, erected by shipbuilders over 130 years ago. Monte works for the non-profit performance art center. As he and Sarah attended the showing of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon there for their first date, the couple share a personal history with the space. Where once they watched the silver screen, under the fanciful proscenium arch, they later stepped into their first dance as husband and wife.

When she got the call that plummeted her wedding into Plan B, Heather had been readying at the salon, a glass of Champagne in hand. Inclement weather soaked her tent by the seaside. Before long, a table holding its side busted in two. With the doppelganger still building momentum, the event for more than 200 guests swiftly relocated into the center’s museum. The staff as well as friends and family reconfigured, moved furniture, and folded napkins. The result? “It brought a lot of character to the wedding,” says Heather, whose first dance found its way to the exhibit halls by glowing wildlife tanks. Guests mingled by a tide pool touch tank, or under the full-scale Humpback whale skeleton suspended in the foyer. When speaking about atmosphere, Heather asserts: “You can’t pay [enough] for a seascape or landscape; you can’t put a price on the sun setting.”

A sizzling-red, flat roofed barbecue house departs from the norm when visualizing the typical New England wedding. It also provides a killer backdrop for a bride and her mermaid gown silouetting a cherry Mustang. Pamela and Steven had their sights on a destination wedding in Las Vegas, but the logistics involving four dogs and accommodating two families became too much. Immediately they gravitated toward their favorite restaurant as their caterer. They wanted soul food, which translated into good eating and comfort. “Essentially, my wedding was planned around

the reception,” says Pamela. When other venues refused an outside caterer, Famous Dave’s offered to host the party. In the end, the decision helped immensely with logistics and costs. Tables, linens, flatware and head cover were readily available, as opposed to renting a tent to follow their public park ceremony. The restaurant’s signature ambience also provided decor, from vintage-styled signs and drop-ceiling lighting to its natural wood hues.

KriStie clarK and matt hunt ceremony and reception: hicKory hill Farm, dover aphrodite photography

When his bride proceeded to the ceremonial arbor in a white gown and weathered galoshes, how could Matt be anything but impressed? “Now that’s the kind of wife who’ll be feeding the pigs tonight,” Kristie teased afterward, who counted on white sandals but rain and mud had something else in store. Planning their wedding on Matt’s parent’s working farm made the day comfortable, memory-rich and genuinely beautiful. Farm artifacts integrated into several details. Fresh cut flowers ornamented Mason jar centerpieces, while more blossoms adorned the ceremonial arbor, each hand-placed by a guest. The shortcake, which served in place of a layered wedding cake, was made from the farm’s strawberries. Dinner boasted barbeque seared to perfection by a local restaurant, Muddy River Smokehouse, and featured—you guessed it—pork ribs from the couple’s very own pigs. Acknowledging, “food is a mainstay for most people’s celebrations,” Matt affirms “the whole idea of raising some of the food ties right back into being a working farm.”

Consider booking an event or day-of-coordinator for your unique venue. Some outfits, such as Everyday Details, www.everydaydetails.com, offer à la carte services. Here are a few things that you will want to ask yourself or your planner:

1. Is an insurance rider required? 2. Is open flame permissible? 3. Is alcohol allowed? 4. Are tables, chairs, linens and flatware included? 5. Is tent rental recommended? 6. Is parking available? 7. Is the area accessible to all populations? 8. Are restrooms available on site?

What to Know about Wedding Limousines

Availability: Reserve 3-6 months in advance or more if your wedding is in the Spring or Summer because of high demand during prom and wedding seasons.

Styles: Most companies offer black and white stretch limos. Some will even have more unique vehicles like stretch Hummers or Lincoln Navigators to accommodate the wedding party.

Drivers: Provide the company with a list of instructions prior to the event. Ask to go over the timeline with the driver the day before and allow the driver to ask any clarifying questions. Budget: Most transportation companies offer wedding packages. Make sure to ask about over time fees and gratuities, and get everything in writing.

August 8, 2009 The Wentworth by the Sea Hotel in New Castle, NH had been a place where Nina and her family celebrated many special occasions. Nina and Matt had gone on dates to the hotel restaurant, too. With the high level of service, exceptional grounds, and wonderful food selections, the couple knew it was the perfect place to celebrate their wedding. Matt is fond of certain New England traditions like cider donuts and whoopie pies. The couple wanted to treat their out of town guests to something special from New England. They incorporated fresh, bite-size whoopie pies tied with a blue satin ribbon to match the color theme of the wedding. Nina was surprised at how she fell in love with her dress. It suited the

surroundings of the big day perfectly. The rose in the back, where a sash gathered, was reminiscent of the gardens in which the ceremony took place. The streamers on the sash were reminiscent of the sailboats in the marina, and there was something slightly Victorian and yet slightly modern to the style, just like the Wentworth. The details came together more perfectly than the couple could have imagined. But, most of all, the best surprise was how well all of the guests mixed and mingled and the love they shared.

Heather’s parents home in Wolfeboro, NH was the perfect spot for Heather & Chris’s summer wedding. The couple did not want to be under time constraints during the event. It also held special memories for Heather. The hill where the couple exchanged vows was the same hill Heather used to sled down as a child.

Chris was raised as a Quaker, and the couple had a Quaker ceremony. The couple and guests all came together in a silent meeting, and friends and families all served as witnesses to the marriage. There was no officiant; only occasional words from loved ones when they felt moved to speak. Chris’s mother opened the meeting with an explanation of the Quaker tradition, and Heather’s father closed it by reading the marriage certificate, which everyone then signed.

ChrisFor favors, the couple cut up two children’s books from the 1940s and made 2-4 line poems out of them. Many of Heather and Chris’s friends are writers, so they set up a typewriter outside the tent with a long scroll of fax paper and invited everyone to leave some kind of a message.

Heather and Chris felt lucky to have many talented friends and family help with their wedding day. They helped prepare the food, arrange flowers, take the photographs, play the ceremony and reception music, and decorate the garden and tents.
